Review: Joe Babylon's cultured US label Roundabout Sounds has never rushed music out but when it does serve up new material it is always timeless and top quality. This latest EP is the first installment in the new All Hands series and it features some real house heavyweights. Frits Wentink kicks off with the mystic and lo-fi depths of 'Jellyfish, then DJ Aakmael layers up his soft edge chords and cuddly kicks drums with some muted horn motifs that bring the romance. The label head brings some upright drums and spoken word lyrics for a beautifully warm sound and last of all Detroit royalty Rick Wilhite links with Jon Easley for a final blissed-out and breezy deep house day dream.

Review: Burnt Friedman and Joao Pais Filipe's collaborative efforts began back in 2018. The former using synthesis and electronics to paint subtly but incredibly specific aural pictures, the latter focusing on the drum and rhythmic end of things. At times their music feels entirely designed for the dancefloors of underground electronic clubs, in other moments it's something very different indeed.
This latest EP lives up to those broad brushstrokes. '21-30' is a lush, almost tropical sounding workout that offers a complex percussive pattern, and combines these with gentle shades of melody, harmony, hook and distorted note. '22-105' brings elements of glitchiness and robotics into the mix. Meanwhile, '18-140' would work well as a brooding building tool (or section) of a 'proper techno' mix, with '23-130' bridging gaps between the lot.

Here it is 8Kays that makes a debut with Falling Down, a selection of superb collaborations including 'Matematica' with Glowal which is tense and electric tech with indie vocals and with Juan Hansen he cooks up the medically hopeful 'Falling Down' which then gets two remixes. This 85th outing is a hand-stamped, white label 12" in mad limited quantities from Alex Jann and it opens with a cosmic adventure in the form of 'Cold Light Wave'. Things get much darker on 'Collective Paranoia' with its menacing low ends and booming sub-bass, then 'Pass 3' takes on a creepy atmosphere with sequential synth bleeps and bumpy broken beats keeping you guessing. Last of all is a funky cyborg disco workout in the form of 'The Chamber'.

Review: A deliberate exercise in Y2K aesthetics and cyberpunk electrance comes in the creative output of DJ Natural Nate - his latest EP for Hoodwink Recordings, 'Notes To Jiggabot' - which consists of four tracks eulogizing his cybernetic partner-in-crime, Jiggabot (several releases from this pair have come out since mid 2018) and seemingly the object of his fantasmic affections. Whether the likes of new numbers 'Chasing The Rhythm', 'I Will Shine For You' or 'Far Away' originate from some angelic conceptual otherworld or this banal material one, it's hard not to love the signifiers poured into the EP: US freestyle jaunts, pure femme vocals doused in reverb-reverbs and melismatic hums; hyper-compressed, lightsabre-sculpted beats and visual cues reminiscent of childhoods spent lost in postmodern futuristic fantasies, such as those of Deus Ex or Blade Runner.

Review: An iconic soundtrack to a classic blaxploitation flick, JJ Johnson and Martha Reeves & The Sweet Things turned a collective head when they simultaneously composed their core themes for Willie Dynamite, directed by obscure director Gilbert Moses. This ineluctable screen treat stars Roscoe Orman and Diana Sands in a quintessential portrayal of early '70s New York pimping, with the central character's foibles giving rise to a latent conscience when he comes into contact with a young social worker. As is often the case with the blaxploitation genre, Willie Dynamite begins with the lead character cruising down the streets of New York in some kind of fancy car, and 'tracked by the central theme: the theme of Reeves' 'Willie D' is clear as day, lyrically portraying D's hustle as 'magic', "never treating two girls the same", "it's no different from any other industry". 'Keep On Movin' On' contrasts this with a note of modesty, signaling the movie's inevitable tonal shift; nor should you miss the B-side instrumentals 'Willie Chase' and 'Parade Strut'.

Review: Sanderson Dear's Stasis Recordings released the original Time Capsule compilation in 2020 - a 20-track exploration of ten different ambient techno artists exploring two ideas each in compact form for a box set of 7"s. Now the label has revisited some of the project's standout moments and offered a chance to enjoy extended versions gathered on a single 12". From Maps Of Hyperspace shaping out atmospheric halls of synth work on 'Beta' to Glo Phase offering some gorgeous, sparkling grooves on 'Fire Flies', there's plenty of ground covered on this release. Review: Jai Alai is only a relatively young label but its first 11 releases have all been of great quality. This new one features a pair of pearlers from Jaheim Hoagland, a US r&b singer with some 480 odd credits to his name dating from the year 2000 onwards and including several solid albums. 'Just In Case' has a classic soul sound with buttery smooth vocals and plenty of male yearning over sophisticated production. On the flipside is 'Diamond In Da Ruff' which rides a nice deep hip hop beat and has great interplay between vocalists as a tender flute adds further depth to a real smoocher of a song.

Review: When it featured in its original mix form on Omar-S's Pain EP, 'I Love Your Girlfriend' was something of a blink-and-you-miss-it gem: a two-minute fusion of piano-powered balladry, seductive soul vocals (provided by guest singer John FM) and sparse, occasional house beats. It was crying out for an extended mix, and the Detroit legend has duly delivered. Now five minutes in length, with more prominent drums, extensive use of P-funk style synth squiggles and auto-tune effects, the mix effectively re-imagines the track as a fluid, soulful, piano solo-laden club track that's as classy as it is tasty.

Review: Second time round for Jensen Interceptor's Afrika Bambaata and Soulsonic Force-sampling electro monster, 'The Fontainebleau', which first appeared way back in 2016. This time round, the Aussie's original mix - a warped, tooled-up take on 'Planet Rock' with added insanity and bass so warped and heavy it may give you nightmares - comes accompanied by a quartet of fresh revisions. Exzakt BFX steps up first with a moody, clandestine-sounding version that wisely employs some different electro beats, before Salome successfully pitches up and beefs up Jensen Interceptor's original mix. The final two mixes come from some genuine legends of the scene, with the Advent's 808 cowbell-and-sub-bass-heavy take being followed by a funky, squelchy and genuinely mood-enhancing revision by DJ Godfather.

This is our first brush with this artist but a fine one it is too with classic techno melded with new school ideas to great effect. 'Quantum Infiltration' opens up with thumping kicks and busy synth lines burrowing deep into your brain then 'Ultra Rogue Mission' has a darker and harder vibe with moody pads and ice col hi-hats. There is a sublime deepness to the dubby 'Millenniaapi' and '2099' is like the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic disaster movie. 'Me Liga' is a mutant techno percolator for the heads.

The flip has three more tunes including the rave of 'Nairless' and blissed out, sun up cut 'Release It' by Last Magpie. Review: First released digitally last year, 'We Work Best' sees sometime Ron Trent protege Anthony Nicholson join forces with soul singer Jadeine Veda for some suitably grown-up, musically expansive deep house thrills. The two club-focused remixes come from Nicholson under his Miquifaye pseudonym - vocal and instrumental takes full of layered, Latin-influenced percussion, locked-in deep house beats, glassy-eyed chords, immersive pads and Spanish guitar flourishes. Of those two mixes, it's the A-side version that really impresses, thanks in no small part to Veda's fragile, emotive and intimate lead vocals. The man turns out a consistently excellent line in spaced out sounds that are masterful reduced to only their most core components. Here he steps up to work with John Howard on a pair of superb new tracks for Repeat. The opener, 'Shiva Needs Some Lovin,' is a mix of stiff drum work and coarse snares with more loose and fluid synths. The duality makes for an enticing groove that takes you off amongst the stars. Review: If you have had your ear to the Balearic underground over the summer you might well have heard some high-profile selectors dropping cuts off this latest missive from US label Just What The World Needs. It is another sublime three-tracker that kicks off with the string-laced and upbeat disco delights of the A1. Second up is a much more slow and sensuous sound that sinks you in deep to a beach lounger as the sun fades into the sea and the sky turns flame red and orange. Review: Digital Finesse makes its bow on vinyl with a new EP from Jimmy Batt that mixes up electro and techno from across the ages. 'The Enigma' is an adventures cut with lots going on - woozy sci-fi pads, dusty breakbeats, progressive techno melodies and electro rhythms that make for a superb cosmic trip. 'The Cloverleaf' is a squelching mix of chilly synths and drum machine loops and then the old school trance tinged techno thumper 'Problematic/The Gate' is awash with neon colour. Review: A Delusional Guide for the Disillusioned is an all new collaboration between Kemastry and Jazz T that takes in five seriously heavyweight cuts that skirt around the edges of hip-hop. This reissue of "Don" comes in 7" format, and its wonky, spaced-out horns and subtle electronics are every bit as strange and daring as they were back in 1970. "Jon", on the flipside, is just as twisted, and possibly even further out there into the ether. Bloody hell...1970! Highly recommended.

Review: As the months warm up we all tend to lean towards the warm and fleshy sounds of dub, which makes releases like this one on Newentun all the more crucial. 'Sugarman' is a classic bit of lovers rock with those earthy guitar plucks, big wood block hits and steel drum sounds. The vocal is silky smooth and full of yearning while heat damaged organs and lazy harmonica further flesh things out. The Ska version has a more clipped and swiping rhythm with a great height to it and then the Jonas Sanchez Trombone Version has big fat wind leads that scream summer.

Review: Eugene Lamont Johnson aka Lamont Johnson is known amongst those who now as the first man to ever become renowned internationally for playing freestyles R&B bass. What a lovely fact. The Michican born artist first came to note as a session musician with Gloster Williams &The King Vision and then went on to work with various other bands. Here we get presented with two of his previously unreleased dance tunes. They feature various different local Detroit musicians and vocalists with the a-side being a male vocal led feel good bunker and the flip driven by a synthesised baseline and big female vocal. Boogie-tastic.

Review: Carlton Jumel Smith earned himself the title Mr Soul, being one of NYC's foremost exponents of a faithful sound which keeps the Motown flame alive. Having released a couple of singles on Timmion last year as well as linking up with Dojo Cuts on Colemine, now Smith is stepping out on Mocambo with the riotous party starter 'Keep On Swinging', a heated affair with sassy brass, overdriven guitar licks and the man himself holding it down with a killer vocal turn. 'Hope' on the flip is a funkier number which calls to mind classic Curtis Mayfield, not least thanks to that sprightly percussion section. Great modern soul music which knows where it's coming from.

Review: Welcome to Nila's Quest, a brand new label that starts as all good day's should, with a healthy serving of breakfast. It's an Argentina Breakfast, to be precise, and the first of what we can only assume will be a series of releases under this title. Jovit is first out of the blocks with the cosmic and crunchy tech house of 'Gamma Goblin' while Ian Puchetti then gets all blissed out and beach with his Ibiza tinged deep house cut 'Dreams'. There is a charming sense of 80s synth nostalgia to the snappy beats of Bruno & TOBI's 'Te Quiero' then Dual Sense's 'Morning Driver' closes out with a perfect soundtrack to late night driving.

Review: For a couple of years a decade or so ago Visionquest was a DJ collective and label that ruled the world. In the time since it has sunk back to the shadows, regrouped and come back as another vital force in the underground. This EP brings together a wealth of real talents not least the one and only synth wizard Mathew Jonson who opens up with the artful sounds of 'These Tears.' Cesar Merveille's 'Decennium' then gets wonky with tightly coiled minimal drums overlaid with pensive chords. On the flipside 'Wonder Wheel' gets a little more eerie and trippy with hunting keys leading you down a late-night maze and 'Dirty Pathways' from Vinyl Speed Adjust layering up the deft synths and airy rhythms.

Review: Ewan Jansen is the man behind Red Ember Records and someone who has served up atmospheric and emotive deep house since as far back as the 90s. Last year he dropped a first album for 16 years, and he kicks off 2023 with what think might be his first EP since then. It's instantly appealing with the Detroit house soul of 'Solanoid' and bendy synth goofiness of 'Caravania' both setting a high standard on the a-side. 'Mistik' opens the b-side with more loose-limbed and cosmically inclined deep house elasticity and 'Gecko' rounds out with a cute melodic touch and playful rhythm.

Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra are an entirely unique phenomenon, a Japanese collective pushing forward Neo-Afrobeat with heavy influence of the classic Japanese jazz sound and the long tradition of covering iconic western soul/funk tracks. Aretha Franklin's 'Rock Steady' is a collaboration with fellow Japanese artist Tina (aka Luv Tina), a decorated vocal powerhouse in the early 2000s R&B landscape, culminating in a mind-boggling genre mashup that defies expectations. The J.A.A. chorus section matches Tina's power perfectly with the blaring jazz instrumental, with phenomenal sax and trumpets. Review: Almost 40 years after the acid sound was first accidentally stumbled across it is still providing artists with endless amounts of inspiration. This Dynamics of Acid label is another one dedicated to the cause and here Jonathan Hipgrave under his Jonny3snares alias explores six different and equally sublime sounds that will make your brain dance as much as your body. There is an inward sense of reflection to the opener 'Signal Drive', a deep melancholy to 'Recovery' then squelchy hyperactive rhythms define 'Scramble.' Three flipside cuts again pair meaningful synths with lithe drum programming to make for a fantastically futuristic EP.

Review: A genuine meeting of minds here, as rising star (and Real Gang Records founder) Danny Miller joins forces with long-serving deep, dubby and techy house maestro Jay Tripwire. What's on offer is undeniably alluring: a three-track salvo built around deep, hypnotic, sub-heavy grooves and wonderfully wayward and wonky electronics. The trippy and mind-altering nature of the duo's combined sound is best exemplified by A-side 'Cut001', where lo-fi bleeps, echoing analogue electronics and ghostly chords wrap around crunchy machine drums and deep sub-bass. They opt for an even more sparse, druggy and dubbed-out tech-house sound on 'Cut002', before joining the dots between bleep, Paul Woolford's 'Erotic Discourse' and Tripwire's dub-fired house sounds on 'Cut003'.

Review: Synkronized is just three releases deep now but is already an assured and reliable outlet for fresh house sounds. This latest offering takes the form of a various artists EP and opens with the brilliantly spaced out electronic house of'Lorenzo Chiabotti & Just_Me's 'Darko FM'. It's a silky one with balmy pads that encourage you to dive right in. Martin M's 'Pleasure Minds' then strips things backed to a nice and empty but rolling groove and on the flip Chad Andrew & Imbue get crunchy with their broken beats. That leaves just Den Haas with his mellifluous and pillow deep house cosmic delight, 'The Spot.'
