Milky Globe/James Holden - "Sun Spots"
Milky Globe/Nathan Fake - "Lava Flow" (Dusty Cabinets mix)
Review: Minimal electronic house tour de force here as Border Com's James Holden teams up with the UK's Jon Tye (aka Milky Globe) here on the A-side, while on the flip Nathan Fake and Milky Globe join forces for the Dusty Cabinets mix of "Lava Flow". The "Sun Spots" cut is a deep slice of electronic dub combining Holden's ever-shifting palette of abstract tones and crisp percussion. "Lava Flow" takes Nathan Fake's signature keyboard work and stretches it out over a sweet low-end groove.

Meditation 6
Review: And so the Perlon Meditations continue... Late last year German producer Thomas Melchior made his first appearance on Perlon in some three years with the exquisite Meditations 1-3, which naturally channelled the iconic label's vibe perfectly. The first Perlon release of 2015 presents a further three Melchior produced Meditations, 4-6, with the opening track something of an understated epic. At 12 minutes long, "Meditation 4" demonstrates Melchior's craft for slowly building a groove, adding elements in a fashion that sounds subtle on headphones and deadly on a soundsystem. Face down, the 5th Meditation is an infectious little house groover, with hi hats and vocal samples jousting playfully whilst the closing track is a sub heavy number rich in vocal abstraction.

Breathe (Deepchord Ocean remix) (7:14)
Review: Deepchord label co-founder Mike Schommer is lesser known than his partner Rod Modell, but this new EP on Greyscale could well even things out a little. His third solo EP is a tender dub techno lullaby with distinctive vocals from Milly James. On "Come Home," the dubbed out chords ripple to infinity while James' angelic vocal lingers long in the air above, then "Breathe" slows things right down to a crawl for even deeper listening. "Cut You Down" is impressively cavernous then Deepchord remixes "Breathe" into a frosty and late night roller.

Magnus Asberg - "Do It (FilOu remix)" (6:48)
Review: After a turn from Ted Amber last year, Romana returns with a split release from FilOu and label mainstay Magnus Asberg. FilOu takes the lead on the A side with dark and seductive piece 'Avron', which Asberg then completely shakes up with a classically minimal remix populated by all kinds of wriggling blips and beeps. On the B side, Asberg's original 'Do It' continues the theme of playful micro elements bobbing around the mix. FilOu then hops back on for a remix, dutifully spacing out the original with some more immersive elements that sit around the steady, stripped-back beat

Memories Of Tomorrow (Topper remix) (7:28)
Belugian Dreams (7:27)
Review: Italo-Atlantian Tito Mazzetta is a dedicated micro house practitioner who brings plenty of interesting ideas to his sweet grooves. 'Memories Of Tomorrow' is a balmy cut with textbook tech house drums overlaid with lush pads and mending leads. 'Italolanta' is a decidedly Italo joint, with stiffer beats and arps making you jerk your body while Topper then steps up to remix 'Memories Of Tomorrow.' He does so with a more subdued and heady minimal style that is all alien details and intriguing atmosphere. 'Belugian Dreams' is the final piece of the puzzle, and again manages to pair tight rhythms with more loose and dreamy synth work.

The Rise Of The Machine (Villalobos Tommy's Boy Grew Old remix) (8:14)
The Rise Of The Machine (Villalobos Factory Closed remix) (12:08)
Review: Into The Wizard's Sleeve have decided to offer up a reissue of the classic Mr Barcode original 'The Rise Of The Machines' for their second wax. It's the sort of glitchy, abstract, twitchy acid and minimal techno that is perfect for those 5am slots in some twisted basement. As such who finer to remix than the king that milieu, Ricardo Villalobos. His first version is an empty, stripped back and full of sub bass and sine wave details, his second is a slightly fuller track with gorgeous hits and plenty of aliens living in the grooves. All in all a superb EP.

Review: This week in minimal tech house we have some wicked underground material courtesy of new label Syntaxx out of Leeds. If the tracks on Syntaxx Waxx Vol 1 are anything to go by, this crew are on to big things in 2021 and beyond. Features Mehlor with the hypnotic swing of "Wurk" reminiscent of local hero Jack Wickham, AWSI goes into UKG territory on the woozy "SPD" while over on the flip Parsec delves into druggy microhouse realms on the afterhours paranoid shuffle of "Error" and Nate SU delivers the mandatory Rominimal style track on the lean groove of "Trip".

Review: Open Channel For Dreamers hist release number 10 with the fifth installment of their The Secret Sun series. Taking charge for the suitably noteworthy occasion is Miki "The Dolphin," an Italian progressive house pioneer alongside the likes of Francesco Farfa and Roby J back in the 90s. Many of his older tunes fetch high prices on secondhand markets and he continues to dazzle audiences with his DJ skills 30 years after starting out. This EP is culled from his personal DAT archives and features three signature sounds, two of which have never been released before, while 'Art Of Libido' you will know, but will struggle to find a copy of.

Review: It's time to get to know Club Magnus, a new label that launches with Moonlight 001, a various artist collection that brings together some fresh contemporary talents across three forward thinking cuts. Jay Tripwire opens up with his scintillating tech house sounds embellished with all the usual acid and after party freakiness. Teluric - "Composite" (7:34)
Review: We've become relentless pushers of (albeit, only the best) minimal and tech house as of late, and who better to celebrate of all that the kickless king of minimal himself, Ricardo Villalobos, remixing a sick classic from Matias Aguayo? The k-holed festival go-to here unveils a wonderful remix of Aguayo's 2013 track 'El Camaron', which also gets a 2022 rerub on the A. Originally forming one part of Aguayo's album 'The Visitor', the original is a tribal, moody unfurler that leans into chanted broken beat. In true Villalobos style, his version is the slowest of burns, straightening out the beat into a 4x4 progression set to subtly inflame dancefloors the world over this summer.

RELIKTWHITE 006 features Ross Kiser on the first side with the cavernous and glacial dub house of "Wiggle Room" in the vein of classic Cynosure, followed by J Pe Bruna & Mares' "Lovetory"with its captivating panpipe melody underpinned by a swing-fuelled rhythm. Mark De Clive-Lowe, Patrick Gibin & Tommaso Cappellato - "Apollo 3000" (MdCL Dreamscape Refix) (5:17)
Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. On the flip, Marc De Clive-Lowe remixes his own collaboration with Gibin and Tommasso Capelleto, 'Apollo', brilliantly joining the dots between spacey jazz-funk and ambient on a superb, beat-free 'Dreamscape' mix.

Mortalyf - "Triple" (7:33)
Review: Sonet's second Various Artists affair is another exploration of the deep and dark end of the minimal and tech house spectrum. Denis Andreev kicks off with a weird and wonderful exploration of hypnotic rhythms overlaid with detuned chamber music sounds and wonky strings. It's brilliantly creepy and perfect for the afters. Gruia's 'La Izvoare' then operate sin a more airy and heady space with deft synth modulations over slinky drums and snaking bass. Last of all comes the heaviest and most bumping cut of the lot from Mortalyf. 'Triple' has super smooth drum loops overlaid with futuristic drones and pepper with squelchy synth textures.

Review: Megaphonim are an Isreali 'supergroup' whose chosen mode of expression is the twin use of the megaphone and the balaclava. Laying somewhere between booty bass, dream pop funk and anarchic punk, all its vocals are quite literally phoned in via an amplified and re-recorded megaphone, while its beats sound nearly as industrial as something produced by Cabaret Voltaire in their heyday. Techno informs on this EP only in its deconstructed, intertextual moments, as on the breakdown before 'Mainstream'. An impressive and different EP from the German group.

Review: The second release from Prognose is packed to the brim with phoned-in samples, techy grooves and strangely salacious, synthy stabs. A standoff between contributing artists Mateo Dufour, Polar NL, Silat Beksi and Matpri, each track is a masterclass in the kind of black-cat slinkiness worthy of this brand of Dutch tech house, which requires subtlety to function effectively. Standouts include the rhodesy 'Yeah' (yeah, indeed) and 'Sviterok'.

Hardcore diggers have been banging their beats for a while but they're not that easy to find so thankfully the Sounds label reissues this collection go thumpers from 1997. It is a hefty double back of raw but soulful beats with rough edges, sharp hits and brilliantly unpolished drums. 'Quadruple Take' is a real sweatathon, 'Carnivalesque' brings the fun with rolling boogie-woogie pianos and further highlights included the silky and spaced out tech of 'Beautiful Music'.

Review: Youandewan's Small Hours label is indeed small but beautifully formed so far. This fifth transmission is another doozy that collects four different artists who all operate on the spaced out end of the electronic house and minimal spectrum. The Former Landlords kick off with breezy and balmy 90s tech house style sounds on 'Council Pop' then Session 4000 go 'Off' with plenty of sci-fi pads and clipped, kinetic drum programming as well as some playful vocal samples. Mop Py' 'Beskar' is a more psychedelic late night wonder with gurgling bass and lovely neon synth trails. Jad & The complete this essential slab of wax.

Review: Weirdo minimal tech soul, anyone? Any takers should be directed towards this oddball release from Melchior Productions and Paul Walter. Two tracks of serious strangeness: timestretched vocals and repetitious yeahs blossom between the beat-thickets of Melchior's 'Yeah X 3', while many more percussive hits and cuts and clicks and pops and booms come courtesy of Walter's B-side, 'Xvive'. It's an impressive first foray for Maria Newyen's new imprint Scious; let's hope future 12"s stay just as weird.

Review: For a long time Gary Martin was referred to as an "unsung hero" of Detroit techno, but with the DET 313 label, run with Yossi Amoyal, he's finally cemented a fearsome reputation as one of the Motor City's finest. With such reputations come the exchange of the proverbial "silly money" for the more hard to find recordings, thus the existence of this double 12" which collects eight of Martin's efforts from the mid to late 90s into one package available for a slightly more sensible exchange of currency. Among the highlights are the Latin-enhanced beats of 'Manhattan', two mixes of the sublime 'In Rythem' complete with a gospel preacher in full flow and a seven minute extended remaster of 'I'll Be Back I Promise' from Yossi Amoyal. It's no surprise to see Martin's work picked up and played by the likes of Ben Klock, given his unique take on rhythm, but there's plenty of soulfulness going on here as well.

Maher Daniel - "Analogue Future" (12:06)
Review: Some two years after the first part of their collaborative EP series hit record stores, Ricardo Villalobos and Maher Daniel have finally delivered volume three. In keeping with their previous joint excursions, epic A-side 'Periodica' is gently dark, feverish and mind-altering, with deep and drowsy Rhodes chords, bleeping electronics and trippy noises clustering around a typically off-kilter, bass-heavy Villalobos style groove (for all his faults, the Chilean can programme drums better than almost anyone else). Also impressive is Maher's flipside solo cut 'Analogue Future', an arguably rhythmically straighter and tougher affair in which a mind-mangling groove comes laden with broken computer sounds, freaky electronic glitches, occasional guitar riffs and dubbed-out vocal snippets.

This latest drop veers away from the more traditional house it most often deals in to dip into sleek minimal territory. Giorgio Maulini is the man in control and 'Night Roads' is just like a nocturnal cruise down the motorway, with wispy neons flying past like headlights and a linear groove extending out below you like miles of tarmac. The rest of the EP remains just as heady and well-designed, with supple grooves and deft synths colouring in the small hours of the morning.

Review: Berlin by way of Los Angeles' Avenue 66 recently served up the latest album by enigmatic artist Moire who has appeared on esteemed imprints such as Hypercolour, Ghostly International, Werk Discs and Ninja Tune. The Circuitry LP was a diverse affair, and the array of remixers on this EP reflects its style of eclecticism. Whether it's the legendary Herbert's deep and melancholic dub of 'Circuit 15' or Tolouse Low Trax's woozy rendition of 'Circuit 07' on the first side, to the typically dusty twilight vibes of Lowtec's remix of 'Circuit 04' and Dial co-head Lawrence's understated late-night perspective of 'Circuit 18' - it certainly does make a complementary addendum to the album.

Review: Detroit-based label Choose Better Friends is a new outlet that is already mighty impressive after just three releases. This one lands quickly after the second from Jaco Matthews and it offers more traditionally included Motor City house sounds. Ryan McCray opens with weighty but dusty drums and grainy sustained chords that lock you into a trance straight off the bat, especially once the low-slung bass and steamy vocals arrive. From there, the wooden knocks and muffled kicks of 'What It Is' are paired with some nice dreamy chords and the flipside offers more zoned-out basement lushness with 'The Tide' and the heavier, more raw 'Rushin.' Essential.

Review: Paranoid London are named as such for a reason: the English megacity really does instill a low-level sense of paranoia and dread. So why the hell not lighten up now and again? That's just what this dubious duo have gone and done with 'Suck A Dick'; replacing their usual EP-cover representation of Big Ben with a giant phallus, Paranoid London have successfully drawn an astute analogy between masculine dominance and the totalitarian dominance of the state. Featuring the unmistakable vocals of regular collaborator Mutado Pintado, it's a guaranteed floor-filler, unusually humorous for the pair's austere, distorted repertoire.

After two head-turning tunes on Groove Access last May, he now makes a solo debut on the Midway Hustle label that confirmed what we already thought: he's got skill. These five tunes show his range with opener 'Everyday Of My Life' being an early evening deep house roller with soulful vocals dusty production. 'Rain Dance' is a more gritty wall-beater while 'Terror' brings late night acid jack that is primed and ready to destroy any warehouse. kings get deep on the flip with our favourite, the misty late night burner that is 'Those Eyes', then the booming kicks and smeared cosmic chords of 'Y'All Feel That'. Another great outing for this new school Chicagoan.

Review: Tunisian imprint Danzha made an impressive debut with the first volume of this series but then went rather quiet. Now, more than two years later, it is finally back with a second volume. Maieutics II is another various artists affair offering up plenty of new names. Denis Kaznacheev's 'The Banach Tarski Paradox' is a dubby minimal marcher with alien life forms weaving in and out in the dead of night. Matt Star's 'Elephant Chair' then gets more trippy with its wonky motifs and daubs of synth. On the flip, Root's 'Palomino' is deep, tight, clipped and frictionless tech and then the machines take over for the futuristic soundscape of Amin Ravelle's 'Vaila.' Plenty of occult musical personality makes this an EP well worth checking.

The Geordie powerhouse runs a couple of his own labels but here finds himself on Echocentric. From cosmic disco to dancefloor tech and plenty in between, Man Power has done it all yet he still manages to find new ground once again here with four cuts of brilliantly original deep house sounds that call on a whole new world of references, mostly from outer space and rave days gone by. 'Jigsaw Thinking' is bright in its melodic makeup, 'What A Puny Plan' has a far-sighted astral gaze and 'Big Sue Wonderland' is an electrifying mix of fizzing synths and singing leads that tingle every sense in your body.

Review: The Spanish Hypnotic Collective label attempts to capture its take on the Detroit Legacy with what looks like a new series of various artists' EP. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Mission accomplished and we're already looking forward to the next one.

My Yellow Coat (Levon Vincent remix) (8:39)
Review: Irish man Matador has become a new school minimal techno champion with his own label Rukus part of the vanguard. Here he makes a move across the street to Damian Lazarus's Crosstown Rebels. He kicks off with 'My Yellow Coat' which is a brilliantly atmospheric cut with rolling drums and indie vocals that come over like a confessional. It's intimate and tender and perfect for late nights in a back room. On the flip is a remix from New York's techno terminator Levon Vincent who flips it into something bulky and raw, with scratch claps and grainy kicks all powering through a late-night urban landscape.

Review: Back after a two year hiatus, French party promoters Pisica present the third release on their label arm, which has previously brought the likes of Cojoc, Timekeeper and Mihai Pol. The Highway features everyone's favourite duo Oden & Fatzo with the early Underground Resistance vibes of 'Queen Of The Highway' followed by the Saar & Mryn's hypnotic back room dub 'Since The Beginning' on side A. Turn over and you've got Thurman with the bumpin' retro techno energy of 'Ghetto Blaster' and similarly Francisco Tettamanti with the acid excursion 'Dancefloor Tales' taking you to a higher state of consciousness.

Review: Acid Cuts is a label based in Athens, Greece, that was founded in 2016 and has since released several records by Melatonin Man, Wata Igarashi, Kovyazin D, Drvg Cvltvre, and JTC among others. Its latest comes from Craig Stainton aka Mantra, who follows up his excellent Into Motion LP on the label with another swift release which features two strong tracks. On the first side, you've got the slinky and hypnotic late night 303 jack of 'First Born', while over on the flip 'Stand Together' is a good old fashioned acid house stomper that's perfect for those heads down moments.

Review: Enter a brand new whirling, cosmic four-tracker from Italian label Threads, and this time MPEG is the brains behind the imprint's seventh release. Opening with the high-energy groover, 'Bite The Bullet', a feel-good melody destined for outdoor play rolls into sharp-focused percussion and a masterful, atmospheric breakdown. Another stand out track, 'Whereabout', follows a light-footed acid line as it soars through the white-cloud blue-sky atmospheres that gradually seep into the track as it progresses. A beautiful release - perfect for daytime dancing and late night dreaming alike.

Review: Josh Wicks' Transient London Records returns with its sophomore release and it's another impressive various artists affair. Zlatnichi & Mila C kicks things off with the hypnotising 'Mengaelerai' on the A-side, followed by Romanian minimal hero Robert Apetrei (Dubsons) on the darkly sublime backroom dub of 'Porata Hill'. Over on the flip, Frenchman Lukea delivers some glacially-edged minimal house for the afterhours on 'Amethyst' and finally, boss man Wicks closes it out with the proper UK tech house style of 'Exotic'.

Review: Israeli music-maker, DJ and editor Lior Miller has been producing and remixing music for over 20 years, time which has evidently been poured into refining the clean, melodic, cathartic sound we hear here. This fresh new EP hears two remixes by Lior of tracks by friends Phototaxis and Kutiman, an electro-soul band from Tel Aviv and psychedelic funk/Afrobeat producer respectively. Lior's signature twists and grooves lend psychedelic depth and melodic, plucky, back-of-the-club flair to the originals - don't miss it.

Review: Minimal Man is the legendary studio partnership between Eon (aka Ian Loveday) and Baby Ford. They cooked up some of minimal's most essential tunes some 20-odd years ago and they have become expensive and highly sought after since. This EP is one of them and it features three killer cuts that will move a dancefloor as much today as ever. 'Make A Move' has a pent-up energy and forward drive that sweeps you up and keeps you locked amongst soft hi-hats and vamping chords. Part 2 is a little darker and more mysterious, with the drum loops a little edgier and the mood that bit more mischievous. 'Stay On' closes down with bubbling drum funk and swirling abstract synth world from deep inside some distant nebula in the sky.

Review: Aterral Limited has taken things slowly to start with but that's fine because the quality of the label's first few releases has remained high. Carlo is behind this one and opens up the EP with 'Hungover', a tune that features Black Loops, who has previously released his own EP on the label. It's lithe, funky deep house with silky synth work and classic drums. 'Lelazo' (feat Emanuele Barilli) carries on down the same path but this time has a darker bassline and more garage tinged skip in the grooves. On the flip side things slow down to a sunset sound on 'Maison' (feat Hauke Freer) and 'Poops' Feat O is a tight, well swung bumper with jazzy keys. Robust and emotive house music from front to back, then.

Review: This double 12" compilation between Brazilian duo Stekke and producer and DJ Max Underson is a perfect marriage between the emotional aesthetic background of Underson's previous works and the precise floor-filling formula that Stekke has devised. The minimal composition is at the crossroads between deep, acid and tech house, with the wet basslines of 'The Messenger' being paired with ritualistic sub-bass lines culminating in house heaven. A real highlight on this release is side 4's 'Guidance', a smooth, grooving track that goes to show that house tracks don't always have to be cramped to the brim. The negative space used in these tracks, and the way it's used, is an art. Not to turn a blind eye to the two unique remixes on the compilation either, which take tracks to new heights thanks to the abstract re-imaginings by XDB and Melchior Productions Ltd. Universal Law is a schooling in the ways of minimal house, take notes.

Review: Australian dance outfit Menage all go it alone for three thumping new cuts on Naarm, Melbourne-based label Merriware Records, while they also unite for a remix of the title cut. 'Lectroniq Love Affair' is dance floor bait - twisted bass and heavy drums with nice freaky hooks. Sam Brickel then taps into a cosmic tech house vibe with his future-facing and subtle acid-laced 'Vespene Dreams' while Eugene Pascal's 'Late Night' is a deeper and more downtempo exploration of dubby rhythm. Lastly, The Menage remix of 'Lectroniq Love Affair' is a slamming bit of machine-made house with skittish synths pinging about the mix. Lovely stuff.

Review: It has been well over a year since we last heard from Mayurashka which is a shame because that last outing on Ladybug out of Japan was a fine deep house excursion full of fresh ideas. Animals Dancing is the label where we are now finally treated to more of that with the Guidance to The Sennou label. The title cut is full of gloopy synth lines and paddy drums ambient details and a warm neon glow. 'Percaholic' is darker and more physical, with train track grooves and warped bass melting the mind before 'Sashima' gets back to more clean synth loops and airy cosmic vibes. 'Upperhorse' shits down with Far Eastern melodies and bird calls over a downtempo drum line.

Review: As far as we can tell, Michael Dop is a new comer to the scene who shows he is well versed in dance effort dynamics with this new EP on Dutch label Heisenberg. His style on 'Makes Us - Us' is slippery and subversive - rhythms slip and slide under vocal apparitions and languid bass that keeps on pulling you in. 'FMME' then brings some prickly acid sounds to puncture a loopy and deep tech groove while the Nu Zau remix spins out more freely and fluidly. Last of all is a melodic delight in the form of the Wyro remix, which has shape shifting synth sequences always on the move.

Famed for his raw, lo-fi approach to house, he messes with the rules and makes unpredictable, unforgettable sounds like few others. Here he arrives on London's Release Sustain with four cuts of relentless drum programming and acid melodies that traverse the line between house and techno. From the slow and wonky opener to the coruscated 'The Dark Hold of the Bold' via the distorted and deprived 'The Nu Glance Sound' this is a fine EP.

Review: Zach Murray is a fast-rising London producer who makes a great impression here with an ambitious and ultimately accomplished double pack on Oscuro. The title track 'Pieces Of The Puzzle' opens with sweeping ambient before 'Chill Pill' explores as glistening melodic world of futuristic tech and 'Can't Stop The Rain' has an old-school energy to its marching drums and rave stabs. There are also forays into acidic electro like on 'Keep Chasin'' and rugged breaks on 'Phase Me', elastic house sounds on 'Dubmotions' and cosmic turbulence in the trippy 'Dreams,' all of which show off this producer's versatility in style.

Modex is at the buttons and opens with the twisted synth lines and multi-layered rhythm of 'Isometra' which is bright and endlessly energising. 'Enagic' has a more undulating groove that never lets you settle but more colourful synth lines and then 'Nairoosh' strips things back a bit to a more serene sound that is always on the rise. IT kick off with a nice and bumping grover that's run through with melancholic pads and plenty of wispy little details that bring it to life. Review: Last year's superb Pura Lempuyang album has been pulled apart and served up on a couple of separate 12"s and this is the second one. It comes on limited turquoise vinyl and offers four cuts of stylish deep dub and techno. Fletcher's 'It's A Virtue' goes first with taught, twanging bass and grubby basslines then Mike Schommer's 'Kingmaker' offers liquid dub funk with watery pads and hissing static. Nicolas Barnes picks it up a little with a darker but still warm dub techno roller in 'Sonic Dial' and Redrop's 'Genesis' is the more driving of the lot but again exists right on the ocean floor.
