'Impact' makes just that with its crisp snare hats and thudding kicks all underpinned by a loopy bassline. Some trips out synths break out like fireworks at the midpoint before the tough, stiff, brilliant beats return. Review: Amsterdam's Makez bring their old school unfused house sounds to Adeen Records in collaboration with Balance Alliance on this fresh new 12" which also features a remix from UK mainstay Mr G. 'Do It' brings super smooth chords and a prickly deep house beat that will get any floor going. Then comes 'Close 2 Us' which is even better - lush and lazy chords are draped over pent-up deep house dynamics with gorgeous vocal coos and jazzy keys also bring extra heart and heat to the mix. 'Beat Of Life' is a more busy percussive sound and then comes 'Love You More' as remixed by the don Mr G who brings his signature smokiness and basement house vibes.

Review: Toolroom sits at the top of the tree when it comes to big room house music. Mark Knight's label has mastered the art of maximal sounds and this eighth volume of the Tooroom Sampler series is another one that will do plenty of damage. Essel's 'Sweat' is a rigid tech cut with stiff synths and libidinous vocals, then Shiba San and Ayarez get direct with shuffling tech house cut 'Twist It' complete with big skewed synths. Friend Within's 'Pilka' keeps the energy levels high with fizzing synth loops over textured drums and a fat bassline. Review: Last year's superb Pura Lempuyang album has been pulled apart and served up on a couple of separate 12"s and this is the second one. It comes on limited turquoise vinyl and offers four cuts of stylish deep dub and techno. Fletcher's 'It's A Virtue' goes first with taught, twanging bass and grubby basslines then Mike Schommer's 'Kingmaker' offers liquid dub funk with watery pads and hissing static. Nicolas Barnes picks it up a little with a darker but still warm dub techno roller in 'Sonic Dial' and Redrop's 'Genesis' is the more driving of the lot but again exists right on the ocean floor.

Review: Jason Garcia, A Garcia, and M Kretsch all get the nod on this new 'Family Values EP from the Cryovca label. The techno trip finds some superb common ground in uncommon sounds here with 'Stuck In Purgatory' kicking off in urgent fashion with bumping rubbery drums and eerie pads. 'Iichabod' then slips into deep and rolling dub techno territory and 'Rock The Dance Bah' brings some playful bass guitar loops to a snappy rhythm. 'Stillgar' shows yet another look - gritty, subterranean techno full of suspenseful pads. There is plenty of real innovation across these four fantastic cuts.

Review: Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana have been working together for what seems like ever, and each time they step out they manage to mine new deep house depths. This new one on We're Going Deep - which has a label sticker that reminds us of Chicago house classic 'Real For Love' - opens with the dubby house drive of 'Going Deep' before sinking into a more warm, humid and cavernous dub house groove on 'Dub Setting'. 'Chi-Town Love' has more upright drums and synths full of dusty soul and 'The Beginning' closes with booming kick drums and plenty of sunset chord warmth.

Review: Aterral Limited has taken things slowly to start with but that's fine because the quality of the label's first few releases has remained high. Carlo is behind this one and opens up the EP with 'Hungover', a tune that features Black Loops, who has previously released his own EP on the label. It's lithe, funky deep house with silky synth work and classic drums. 'Lelazo' (feat Emanuele Barilli) carries on down the same path but this time has a darker bassline and more garage tinged skip in the grooves. On the flip side things slow down to a sunset sound on 'Maison' (feat Hauke Freer) and 'Poops' Feat O is a tight, well swung bumper with jazzy keys. Robust and emotive house music from front to back, then.

She has a sound that is psychedelic and unrelenting and is perfect for energetic raves in insalubrious locations. This new outing is a strong statement: the Pleasure Phonetix EP offers five cuts that take in many different influences from the electronic spectrum from tough techno to stripped-back electro via stylish and classy psy-prog. Review: Damian Lazarus's Crosstown Rebels label has ridden out many different waves of popular sounds and always remained relevant. Right now it looks to Made By Pete for a new 12" that has a gritty, low slung and sleazy tech house vibe. 'Fires' has menacing basslines and steamy vocalisations that make for an unsettling mood. UK tech house titan Bushwacka! then remixes with his signature sense of drive thou with slithy more deep and pensive pads than usual. A dub mix is also included as is a rework from Victor Calderone & Mykol that is full of late night mischief.

Review: If you're reading this then you will know that Instinct is one of the UK's powerhouse garage labels. Run by Burnski aka James Burnham it deals in serious tackle for rude boys and nasty girls. The drums hit hard, the reversed bassline burn goose old school cool and there gun finger salutes come thick and fast throughout this EP from Mance. 'Checkpoint' opens with the dusty drum shuffles and bulbous bass, then 'The Going Is Rough' is a little more soulful and sweet with its rolling basslines and silky pads. 'Beat 93' closes down with a seriously OG garage sound that takes you back to the mid-90s.

Review: Contemporary oddball dance pushers Exarde have been responsible for breaking many new artists of late, their latest being Mar.C, who professes a vampiric, gothic edge to his latest productions. Allegedly, Mar.C is part of a unique cabal of revellers who can see what others can't, with the liner notes of this EP mentioning "the dancing vampires you often see at parties"; of course, the artist is from Transylvania. Whether you hear vampirism in this collection of tracks or not, 'Tranceformative' is nonetheless a curious set of tunes, each of which get progressively weirder, culminating in the spine-tingling closing remix from P O.

Review: The Det 313 label is kicking off the new year with a bang and dropping a pair of brilliant new EPs on the same day in late January. This one is a reissue of the esteemed Gary Martin's 'Pimping People In High Places' on 10". It's the Woodword Ave alternative mix that kicks off and is a rough and ready percussive techno looper with hefty basslines underlapping and propping up the floor. 'The Medusa Touch' is a more wily and synth laced-late night jaunt with mystic energy and acid details that make it a deep and dramatic cut with real dynamism.

Review: House-master, Matthias, is the latest producer to debut on the iconic Scottish Minimal/Tech house imprint, Craigie Knowes. Delivering a class EP injected with originality and outright funk, this will be a no-brainer purchase for a long list of DJs and home listeners. On the A side, 'Tube Star' arrives with a throbbing bassline, honey-sweet synths and glinting percussion. For the A2, growling electric guitar melodies meet darkened synthlines and bludgeoning kicks to produce a powerful dancefloor-ready track. On the B-side, we have Ultra Bass on remix duties, offering a bass-stroke-acid-stroke-garage take on Matthais' signature sound - this is undoubtedly a peak time track for those out-of-control moments. Closing things up, 'Wires Around My Neck' slows to a patient pace - a duet of circling synth melodies and chugging drums give this track a delectably wonky, spaced-out vibe. A wonderfully varied release that is surely set to be a favourite for this year's circuit of festivals.

Review: It has been well over a year since we last heard from Mayurashka which is a shame because that last outing on Ladybug out of Japan was a fine deep house excursion full of fresh ideas. Animals Dancing is the label where we are now finally treated to more of that with the Guidance to The Sennou label. The title cut is full of gloopy synth lines and paddy drums ambient details and a warm neon glow. 'Percaholic' is darker and more physical, with train track grooves and warped bass melting the mind before 'Sashima' gets back to more clean synth loops and airy cosmic vibes. 'Upperhorse' shits down with Far Eastern melodies and bird calls over a downtempo drum line.

Review: Returning from a brief hiatus, Spin Desire launches its third release and it is one dedicated to spotlighting talented artists who are currently flying under the radar. This time, they present Mculo, a UK-born, Berlin-based artist known for his versatile production skills. Mculo's four-track EP offers a deeper journey than previous releases, showcasing peak-time house, UK-infused breaks, hazy after-hours vibes, and a captivating downtempo finale. Review: Mega eerie techno from Germany's own Michael Melchner, proving techno can indeed be done differently, not least when its groceries are in season. Active since 2008, springboarding his career with the label and masters of German uniformity and drab, Cargo Edition, Melchner has since flown the nest into further-afield aerations with Paragram, Bloop Recordings and now, Different Times. 'New World Supermarket' truly sounds to be a grim sort, with the title track, together with the ensuing 'The Voyeur', 'Anatomicouture', and 'Kolonne Null', painting a rather anxious, suspenseful and brutalist picture of future grocery shopping. The closing track is something of a cathartic let-up compared to the first three, its pace relatively downtempo and its choice of samples roomy and sci-fi, though the creep factor still ever-so-slightly remains.

Review: Having already served up plenty of (in his words), "heaters and panel beaters", Mella Dee delivers a four-track hit of bona-fide rug cutters. He first fuses sweat-soaked and stomping house beats, bassline house style organ bass and giddy female vocal samples on the energy-packed 'Cutting Snakes (Keep on Moving)', before reaching for fuzzy analogue bass, squelchy TB-303 motifs, breathless vocal snippets and more grade-A drums on 'Bumps (You Say)'. The South Yorkshire producer successfully breaks up the beats on the warehouse-ready excellence of 'Cutters (They Don't Get It)', while 'Pay No Mind (Who Am I)' is a bouncy, garage-influenced early morning workout full of deep sub bass, haunting male vocal samples and infectious organ stabs.

Review: Australian dance outfit Menage all go it alone for three thumping new cuts on Naarm, Melbourne-based label Merriware Records, while they also unite for a remix of the title cut. 'Lectroniq Love Affair' is dance floor bait - twisted bass and heavy drums with nice freaky hooks. Sam Brickel then taps into a cosmic tech house vibe with his future-facing and subtle acid-laced 'Vespene Dreams' while Eugene Pascal's 'Late Night' is a deeper and more downtempo exploration of dubby rhythm. Lastly, The Menage remix of 'Lectroniq Love Affair' is a slamming bit of machine-made house with skittish synths pinging about the mix. Lovely stuff.

Review: Big up the Hoarder label for arriving at a quarter of a century of relases and doing so with such a fine offering from Mennie. It's a potent sound explored from the off with 'Tuncha' landing on kicks so heavy they will rattle walls as wispy synths dart about and an old school bass sound throws it back. 'Want You Print' is another prog-laced 90s tinged and psychedelic sound then 'Noha' takes off on a wave of warm, heads up, blissed out chords accompanied by some classic finger clicks. 'The Lost Tape' is the top buzz of a closer with its full throttle drums and bass and soaring breaks.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Styrax has the rights to a great reissue of some long-lost but enduring classic cuts from Merv here. Written in 1995 and 1998 they are archetypal dub techno rollers that draw as much from the European school of Basic Channel as they do the lo-fi depths of Detroit. 'Dust' opens up with warm and humid chords over elegant and rolling beats that cannot fail to sweep you up, then 'Melted Vein' offers a more driving but no less hypnotic sound, this time with sleek tech pads peeling over the airy hi hats and bouncing kicks to take you up amongst the stars. Perfect for those zoned-out, low-lit basement moments at 5am. Quality tackle.

Review: As far as we can tell, Michael Dop is a new comer to the scene who shows he is well versed in dance effort dynamics with this new EP on Dutch label Heisenberg. His style on 'Makes Us - Us' is slippery and subversive - rhythms slip and slide under vocal apparitions and languid bass that keeps on pulling you in. 'FMME' then brings some prickly acid sounds to puncture a loopy and deep tech groove while the Nu Zau remix spins out more freely and fluidly. Last of all is a melodic delight in the form of the Wyro remix, which has shape shifting synth sequences always on the move.

Review: Minimal Man is the legendary studio partnership between Eon (aka Ian Loveday) and Baby Ford. They cooked up some of minimal's most essential tunes some 20-odd years ago and they have become expensive and highly sought after since. This EP is one of them and it features three killer cuts that will move a dancefloor as much today as ever. 'Make A Move' has a pent-up energy and forward drive that sweeps you up and keeps you locked amongst soft hi-hats and vamping chords. Part 2 is a little darker and more mysterious, with the drum loops a little edgier and the mood that bit more mischievous. 'Stay On' closes down with bubbling drum funk and swirling abstract synth world from deep inside some distant nebula in the sky.

MINIMAL X arrives with a second 12" this New Year and it comes from the eponymous producer. It's a wonky and afterparty-tinged minimal jaunt from him in solo mode to open up with as 'Zaha Zhivai' gets you locked into a slinky groove. Review: When it comes to blending deep house, tech-house and hazy minimalism, you can't beat the hybrid sounds emerging from Paris. While new artists are appearing all the time, Miroloja are old hands, having released their first EPs back in 2017. They're still masters of the sound too, as this four-tracker emphatically proves. They begin confidently via the spacey electronics, elastic synth-bass, hypnotic beats and intergalactic pads of 'Evoorg', before opting for a darker, chunkier and more percussive early morning sound on 'Percstherapy'. Pathagonia remixes that cut, giving it a bouncier and dreamier breakbeat house flex, before Miroloja plumb even deeper depths on the loved-up lusciousness of shuffling closing cut 'Conspiracy'.

Review: Keinemusik's Rampa & &ME put their spin on the third single from the most recent Moderat album, released not too long ago in 2022, MORE D4TA. 'More Love' was a star track and well represented the longtime Ninja Tune and now Monkeytown duo's contemporary sound; fusing popular indie-stadium motifs with vocoded electronics and elusively glossy vocal repetitions. This remix, however, hears a complete and utter tempo shift and ushers the track into far more treacherous territories, echoing the aesthetic of contemporaries such as DJ Koze in its stereo-panned percussive clanks, muted-distorted vocal processing and peculiar "womps".

Review: Progressive house was always huge across Eastern Europe and so it is that this lush new offering comes from Estonian label Gestalt. Modex is at the buttons and opens with the twisted synth lines and multi-layered rhythm of 'Isometra' which is bright and endlessly energising. 'Enagic' has a more undulating groove that never lets you settle but more colourful synth lines and then 'Nairoosh' strips things back a bit to a more serene sound that is always on the rise. It unearths producers who blend familiar sounds in unfamiliar ways and always bring some leftfield charm to their grooves. Enter Off & Train who here bring plenty of dreamy charm to their deep and scuffed up house opener 'Ewok'. 'Sunday' has lovely innocent melodies unfurling way up over some dusty drum breaks, 'Polestar 2' is a more chunky cut for sweatier moments but still retains a naive melodic air and closer 'Milpool' (Ode To Karl) brings squelchy space-jam vibes to a dreamy house music closer.

Review: Quid Pluris is a new label from long-time friends Ricky Montanari and Manuel De Lorenzi. For their first release they have decided to offer up a reissue of the former's Ricky Presents Dandi & Ugo single, 'Beat Conductor' on a fresh slab of wax. The original is a crisp bit of minimal and tech house with tinges of electro and dub and a great vocal. The rigid, slapping grooves make you move while the silky synths keep things on the move. After that Ricky Montanari & Edo LoZio main mix version comes a more paired back Manuel De Lorenzi Beat remix that is just as original and standout.
