Cat: M 06/10861. Rel: 13 Mar 96
  1. Track 1

Review: 'M 6' consists of two heavy stomping dub house tracks that are dominated by a multiple modulated sequence that reaches from considerable depths to the heights of coloured noises. All is surrounded by a warm and organic sound sphere of the usual characteristics. A deep groove experience is guaranteed.

  1. Ploy (Strategic remix)
  2. Eleye
  3. Outerlude
  4. Ploy (UR mix)
Review: 'Ploy' is the imitating release by Basic Channel even before they had found their name under which they would create a complete outstanding release sequence. The vibe here is very infected by the early 90s Detroit techno movement. The B-side features an extended playing atmospheric remix by Detroit's major force Underground Resistance (2005 re-mastered re-issue!).

  4. Cut
Review: Mike & Dot, already well-known for their luscious debut on Substatic (#52), now burrow themselves even deeper into technoid funk and succeed to uncover the tight floor pleasers once more. Each bar of the Lego EP is causing content head banging at the Substatic headquarters, underlining the idea of boosting new and undiscovered talent. They've got loads of that, those two junior techno heads from Jerusalem: In their extensive deep dripping tribalisms and DBX like bleeps & clonks stand next to post minimal 12-tone-madness and rapid glitch anthems, for the invincible optimists of a wild tap-dancing crowd. Almost boldly sophisticated, they distort their references and dash around the beats, however always leaving enough space to read between the lines. An unpretentious firework of good taste in four acts.

Speaking of, Pheek contributes the awesome cut 'Previews' here alongside equally devastating jams from Dario Zenker 'New Kids On Weed', Seph's 'Phound' and Motio & E Contact with 'Do You See'.

Transit EP (12")
Cat: GPM 0696. Rel: 26 Apr 07
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Transit (original mix)
  2. Transit (King Britt Scuba mix)
Review: The Sebo K and Metro make a partnership debut on Get Physical with "Transit". These upcoming house producers are so hot that this EP almost melts the vinyl that it's pressed on! "Transit" looks to the past and the future at the same time: inspired by old school Chicago house but boasting a modern techno approach to arranging, the nagging bass riff at the heart of "Transit" builds and builds along with Sebo and Metro's evocative chords to create a track that will raise the roof on any club during the peak time. "Transit" never loses its raw, hypnotic groove either, and after it reaches a climax, the sparse, raw rhythm is still there, urging the dancers to keep moving. Philly producer King Britt dons his Scuba hat to provide the remix. It's more understated than the original version, based on an off-beat groove, but, like a thief slipping through an open door in the middle of the night, Britt's reshape gradually introduces the hypnotic chords. Before you know it, his remix will have seduced any crowd who love deep, electronic house music. Get a move on to pick up on this future house classic!

  1. Moritz Von Oswald Trio - "Restructure 2"
  2. Digital Mystikz - "Restructure 2 Rebuild"
Review: A taster for the trio's forthcoming third album, Horizontal Structure, this single sees Von Oswald and collaborators Max Loderbauer and Sasu Ripatti (aka Vladislav Delay) further explore the notion of merging dub techno with other, previously unconnected styles. "Restructure 2" is a swirling, atmospheric piece, its languid, low-tempo groove accompanied by some tastefully spacey guitar playing and mellow jazzy vibes. It's understated, studied and about as far removed from Maurizio's "Ploy" as one can get, but yet it still retains much of the same cavernous production sound. The choice of remixer, Mala, is also surprising as it eschews Von Oswald's techno habitat in favour of dubstep. That said, the Digital Mystikz producer has a credible string of releases for DMZ, Tectonic and Soul Jazz, and like the Basic Channel producer, fully understands the power of the bass. There is also some subtle referencing to the time that Van Oswald first rose to prominence through the use of 'Intelligent Techno'-era melodies and the ambient outro, but Mala's remix is all about the tumbling drums and tribal, swinging rhythms.

Blue (12")
Cat: HJP 073. Rel: 06 Sep 13
  1. Blue
  2. Blue (dub)
Review: Moritz von Oswald Trio catch up on the amount albums they've released for Honest Jon's by delivering a new and second EP for the label called Blue. It's a return to dub techno in its most purest form, which is, of course, the spacious minimalisms of mid-90s Basic Channel. Welcomingly, "Blue" is dryer than ever with a smooth groove that's peppered with caustic stabs of saw wave, while the B-side's dub version is slowed down to a 2013 synthesised version of something by dub reggae originators The Upsetters. TIP!

  1. You Took Your Time (Kyle Hall remix)
  2. Made To Stray (DJ Koze remix)
  3. You Took Your Time (Lee Gamble remix)
Review: Off the back of their blossoming indie-electronica sophomore LP Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, the Mount Kimbie duo undergoes the remix treatment from three well-equipped and idiosyncratic artists. First up Kyle Hall brings the Detroit grit but balances it with his sensitivity towards UK concerns for an uptempo and undeniably version of "You Took Your Time". DJ Koze brings a more tender kind of 4/4 full of esoteric melodic flourishes and the stark original vocal on "Made To Stray", and Lee Gamble rips it all up with his own aquatic blur of "You Took Your Time" that lets the drums fall muddily and the synths strain against a wall of sonic fluff, with fantastic end results.

  1. The Man From Another Place (original mix)
  2. Arecibo
  3. The Man From Another Place (Timothy J Fairplay remix)
  4. The Man From Another Place (Cottam remix)
Review: Hailing from sunny Los Angeles, Plastic Love Records kicks off our first release with an EP from label co-boss Jimmy Maheras. Maheras made his debut in 2011 with his Space Jam EP on the Crosstown Rebels edit sub-label, Rebellion. Since then he's released remixes and singles on Strainjjur, Riff Raff, Supernature, and Left'd.

Maheras's two original tracks showcase his depth with The Man From Another Place being squarely aimed at the big room dance floor and the second track, Arecibo, bringing a little Kraftwerkesque funk. We've commissioned Timothy J Fairplay (Crimes Of The Future) and Cottam (Aus Music / Ruff Draft) for two very unique remixes. Fairplay crunches down the original melody and throws it over the famed amen break to give TMFAP a hands in air late night feel while Cottam's remix brings the dreamy melody closer to acid with storming late night kick ready to knock down a wall.

  1. Delta Ditch
  2. Under The Veil
Review: After two releases thus far from Martinez, Danish label Concealed Sounds reaches out to Michael Melchner who is fresh from appearances on Paragram and Do Easy amongst others. Minimal techno is the order of the day on this sturdy two tracker, with the A side given over to the stripped and punchy "Delta Ditch" which benefits from a prominent snare slap and some rumbling sub tones for its dancefloor dynamics. The B side "Under The Veil" is a more esoteric affair that worms wistful slithers of melody around a detailed and precisely crackling beat, before a surprise bonus jam brings some downtempo unease to proceedings for a different shade of Melchner's production style.

Review: Under the Melchior Productions name, German producer Thomas Melchior has committed some of his finest material to wax in the name of Zip and Markus Nikolai's seminal Perlon imprint. After an absence of some three years, Melchior's name is back on one of those distinctive Perlon 12"s with the first of two planned records under the Meditations banner. Don't get confused by the name though, the three "Meditations" are in no way meditative! Instead this is a record that finds Melchior fully channelling that classic Perlon vibe with the rowdy "Meditation 2" the pick of the bunch.

  4. Fahrenheit (5:48)
Review: UK bass-heavy deep tech? Outsider rave? Call it what you want, but XL's mission to reconnect with the UK underground is certainly putting in an effort, if recent releases by Zomby, Special Request and Powell are anything to go by. This time they tap Berlin's rising star Hugo Massien. First track "Kontrol" is main room house for mega raves with its massive, razor sharp bassline and repeated refrain of 'mind control!" certain to fuel dancefloor euphoria. "Better Let Her" rewinds back to the early evening, warming things up in nice style on this smooth deep house number. On the flip things fast forward to the peak time on the adrenalised "All Night" featuring 'that' Moodymann sample from RBMA; will it be another Oliver $ moment? Finally "Fahrenheit" is a dark tech house killer reminiscent of early Jamie Jones. The young producer has seemingly emerged out of nowhere, but already on to big things.

  1. Kota 1000 (8:48)
  2. Panamericana (Ben Buitendijk remix) (10:56)
Review: Having raised a few eyebrows by delivering one of Visionquest's more interesting releases of 2015, Moreon & Baffa proceeded to impress further with their first Panamericana EP for Subwax Bcn. Here they deliver the follow-up, once again hitting the spot. "Kota 1000" is something of a deep techno treat, with the duo lacing dubbed-out chords and deep space melodies over a fluid, undulating, bass-heavy groove. Mosaic, OGUN and Kering alumnus Ben Buitendijk handles remix duties, delivering a deep, dubby and hypnotic - if pleasingly stomping - rework of previous single "Panamerica". His use of delays and reverbs is particularly good, while the Rotterdam man's usual wall-of-sound production remains in tact.
