Soundtracks
Main Titles (You've Been Called Back To Top Gun) (2:23)
Kenny Loggins - "Danger Zone" (3:34)
Darkstar (2:56)
Miles Teller - "Great Balls Of Fire" (live) (1:57)
You're Where You Belong/Give 'em Hell (5:26)
OneRepublic - "I Ain't Worried" (2:31)
Dagger One Is Hit/Time To Let Go (2:21)
Tally Two/What's The Plan/F-14 (3:50)
The Man, The Legend/Touchdown (7:13)
Penny Returns (interlude) (2:46)
Lady Gaga - "Hold My Hand" (3:48)
Top Gun Anthem (2:28)
Review: When they brought back Tom Cruise's macho fighter pilot for Top Gun: Maverick, they were making no bones about the nostalgia trip. The original remains an endearingly ludicrous slice of 80s action with all the brawn necessary to make it an enduring hit, and the soundtrack more than matches up to that, going nine times platinum, no less. That's a lot of success to match up to, so Maverick pulls out the big guns by tapping up Lady Gaga for the hit-making and Hans Zimmer for the epic Hollywood score. It's tonnes of fun, and it even features Kenny Loggins' classic 'Danger Zone' from the original.

Review: This is the third full-length album by veteran Swedish producer Ola Obergman who has been producing since the turn of the millennium on respected imprints such as Skam, Borft and Futhur Electronix. A heavy collection of 808-based fusion in classic Pariter style, Mirror Counterpart is a cohesive effort featuring some truly impressive productions; from the early proto-house sound of the title track, to the Detroit influenced hi-tech soul cuts on the second disc - 'Indeterminacy' and 'Stellar Triangulation' respectively - going into 4/4 robot funk on the second disc with 'Alice Matter' and 'Uncertiny Principle' being the highlights. Superb.

Review: They may have taken their insanely catchy punk rock to the top of the charts, but The Offspring started out in the underground like any other band. This collection of demos takes us right back to the beginning, when they were some snot-nosed SoCal thrashers with everything to prove. That's why you get treated to the likes of a cover of Sweet cover 'Ballroom Blitz', but even in their rawest state the band were no joke. The track 'Tehran' from 1988 is an interesting precursor to their subsequent 1991 single 'Baghdad', where the political climate clearly shifted from one Middle Eastern crisis to another. Balancing hardcore energy with their sharp melodic sensibility, this is a fascinating insight into the roots of Dexter, Noodles et al.

Review: The Gutifunk & Achilisound Discos label is based in Platja d'Aro on the Costa Brava in Spain. Its mission is to reissue rare and vintage records but they also deal in plenty of fresh new sounds. And that is where Dani Nino's Ogyun Afrobeat project comes in. It has put out two albums before now, one in 2013 and one in 2016, and this third one is the best yet. It is a glowing Afrobeat work doused in jazz and soul goodness with rousing horn work, plenty of busy percussive lines and lush chords. It has been made by a fine collective of artists on ass, keys, sax, flutes, piccolos and plenty more and is a truly life-affirming listen.

Review: One of the UK's most distinctive, consistent and authentic male soul voices returns with his eighth album in 27 years... And it's a serious piece of work. Rich in range, warmth, creativity and a keen eye on the dancefloor, everything about him feels refreshed and energised. Highlights include the Dilla-meets-Iz & Diz style "This Way That Way", the glistening Balearic charm of "Feeds My Mind", the syrupy organs and harmonies on "Insatiable". Winding down with the almost filmic narrative "Grey Clouds", it's one of those records that will have you leaping up, flipping to side A and starting all over again. Feel the love.

Review: Hard-working beat-maker Omas has been operative on the hip-hop underround for the best part of a decade, dividing his time between laying cuts and scratches for other artists, working with the National Curriculum crew and releasing occasional seven-inch singles on the My First Moth label. Plying Trade, his first full-length excursion, is undoubtedly his most sizable project to date. It's rather good, too, with Omas offering up a range of dusty, club-ready and blunted instrumentals that make great use of a wide range of samples while doffing a cap to boom-bap, golden-era beats and the stoned, head-nodding goodness that was once the backbone of Ninja Tune's release schedule.

Review: Joshua Smeltink is a pianist and producer who works under the On-Ly alias. Since around 2017 has he been playing local bars as well as being a part of a number of different bands. He is currently busy with his own On-Ly band which features Carl Lindeberg on bass, Henry Hicks strumming the guitar and Bryce Zelno from Astral Feld on drums. This heavyweight new album explores worldly rhythms with plenty of off-beat grooves, finger clicks, hulling great drum hits, dark synth sounds and expressive broken beats and jazz melodies to make for an album that is as primal sounding as it is beautiful.

Review: For his eighth studio album, rapper Open Mike Eagle rather heads down memory lane, after discovering some old mixtapes that ultimately inspired him to take that path. He calls upon the classic boom-bap sounds of the 90s that he grew up with and next to that nostalgia he brings his own witty and introspective lyrical charm. There is a bittersweet sense of humour to some of the tunes and some more smooth and sensitive 90s R&B style jams with plenty of very tight and solid raps along the way.

Review: Following on from last year's immense EP Til The Stream Runs Dry, Brighton based jazz/post-punk bastardisers Opus Kink make good on all of their absurd promise with the much anticipated debut full-length My Eyes, Brother! Sporting a dizzying concoction of caustic riffage, sardonic spoken word and flurries of jazz fusion bedlam whilst retaining an effortless display of controlled cohesion, the absurdist narratives are elevated by unhinged forays into funk-punk no wave noise-rock, and serves as yet another notch on the belt of Nice Swan's expansive and incomparable roster of cutting edge artists. For fans of Black Midi, Black Country, New Road and mercurial nonsense of the highest standard.

Review: Lore Of The Land is a debut release from Order of the 12 and it was recorded under the castle in Lewes in East Sussex. It features the legendary Richard Norris on keyboards, drums and production and drawing on all his considerable know-how next to Rachel Thomas on vocals and Stuart Carter on guitars. The record pulls from Sussex folk music as well as plenty of hints of a love and respect for psych-folk acts such as Trees or Mellow Candle. It's a beautiful 10-track body of work that sounds both steeped in ancient mystery and full of fresh modern invention.

Review: This second instalment of Jazz Room's Pure Latin re-releases comes in the form of Orquesta Mayombe's masterpiece, Con Ritmo Del Tambo. First emerging in 1980 and now considered to be a classic example of Nu Yorican El Barrio sound, this is an essential record for fans of Tata Vasquez. Featuring Afro-Cubano jazz heavyweights including Chocolate Armenteros, Jose Mangual, Mauricio Smith, and Orestes Vilato, as well as an astounding seven-person percussion section, it's safe to say this release packs a punch. Travelling through ten dazzling, floor-filling cuts of Afro-Cuban via New York Jazz age tracks, this is a must-have for fans of Latin jazz.

Hype and awe abound over this Orb side project, with Oss having been resurrected last year several decades on from its initial stint as a hybrid live / DJ project from Alex Paterson and his longtime collaborator Fil Le Gonidec. This new album is a mere 8 track weirdo's favourite, straight from the brains of this techno-toned, post-dub power duo, from the psytech clicks and claps of 'Wow Picasso' to the worse-for-wear machinations of 'No Speed Limit'. Grab this special coloured vinyl edition while you can.

Review: Originally released in 1979, 'Self Conscious Over You' still serves as a vital piece of Northern Irish punk more than four decades on. Following the success of their 'Just Another Teenage Rebel' single via Good Vibrations, and airplay attention from the one and only John Peel, The Outcasts delivered a staggering debut of frustration, vitality and youthful angst, with seminal cuts such as 'The Cops Are Comin' tackling more weighty anti-authoritarian vitriol, yet the bruised distracted heart of unrequited teenage affection and snot-nosed rebellion primarily teems through this essential Belfast punk classic. One for fans of the classics and newfound punk scholars wishing to expand their knowledge.

Review: Recorded in Montreal, Quebec in 1981 whilst touring his sophomore solo endeavour Diary Of A Madman, this live LP from the former/current/former (?) Black Sabbath frontman serves up an iconic slice of very-much-in-his-prime metallic rock mayhem. Featuring timeless staples such as 'I Don't Know', 'Crazy Train', 'Mr. Crowley', and even finishing with an electrifying cover of 'Paranoid' (greatly embellished by Ozzy's secret weapon throughout the 80s - guitar virtuoso Randy Rhodes), this LP serves as a high watermark live collection from the Prince of Darkness.

Review: Music from Memory have coaxed a special one off long player out of the trio of talents that is Belgian producer soFa, German musician Houschyar and the legendary Turkish drummer and percussionist Okay Temiz. Second Circle is made from studio session that started back in 2018 and makes use of a number of homemade instruments. Plenty of overdubbing techniques have been sued to achieve the richly layered sound and each piece is an intoxicating and meditative study in otherworldly electronics and earthy percussion. A gloriously unique and original listen.
