Review: While hardly a "Holy Grail"all bar a few people didn't know it existed until recently, D.J Never Sleep's sole single, the private press gem 'Teorema', can certainly be described as "buried treasure". It was reportedly the work of some experienced Italian producers, though its' sound is all Spanish guitar solos, early house-meets-Latin freestyle beats, joyous Piano riffs and evocative female vocals, it is pure formative Balearic house. This Thank You reissue not only showcases the original EP's two leading mixes (track two here, the more chugging and synth bass-sporting rework, is the pick), but also a never-released, effects-laden 'Never Sleepy Beats' drum took, plus versions in Spanish (B1) and French (B2).

Review: Demi Riquisimo's 'A Lifetime On The Hips' sublabel returns to make it a hat-trick of releases for 2023 with the impressive 'Body Move' V/A, featuring eclectic club cuts from Dreamrdreamr, SY, Papa Nugs, Elfenberg, Absolute. & Ysanne. Dreamdreamr's emotive 'Zone 4 Booty Call' kicks off the A-side; it's a track that effortlessly fuses elements of deep house, trance, and r&'b, setting the the tone perfectly for an EP not bound by the borders of any genre. The titular 'Body Move' by SY is up next; a no-nonsense house chugger with flourishes of Italian 90s progressive and acid - a perfect modern interpretation of a foundational strand of club music. The A-side wraps up with one of 2023's most exciting prospects Papa Nugs and the vocoder infused, percussive, twisted jam 'Loosey Goosey'. The flip picks up right where the A-side left off with Elfenberg's 'Solarplexus', a cosmic, evolving and psychedelic interpretation of house. Review: Harrison BDP is in playful form on his latest release, which sees the long-serving deep house producer don a new alias: Parrish Bond, a 'tache-sporting secret agent turned crate digger whose Hollywood-worthy missions leave him "no time to dig". Silly set-up aside, the music on show is top-drawer, particularly opener 'Always Take The Stairs', a kind of tribute to Guerilla-era British progressive house piled high with short, tight acid lines, deep organ bass, manipulated choral vocal samples. chunky beats and waves of electronic melodies. He reaches for the TB-303 once more on the more hypnotic and ghostly 'FickleB', before going all exotic, twisted and hazy on the undulating bass, bubbly acid motifs and interlocking melodies of 'I Prefer It May Way'. A subsequent two versions of the eponymous track, which flaunt the lilting vocals of the divine Diviniti, hear a driving yet heavenly song play out over two sides, with its echoic calls of "the sun will rise..." calling out over an impressive instrumental dawn chorus of bass and strings.

Review: Rebirth invites us to go back, way back, to the Italian underground techno scene of the 90s with this new selection of alternate versions, unheard gems and certified classics. Oneiric & Vortex open up with a tune that brings to mind the warmth of Motor City techno on 'Oasi' before GNMR layer up supersized hi hats and seriously weighty beatdown drums, Populous offers the loopy melodic delight of 'Barragan' and G-Connection heads into the cosmos with the dreamy ambient of 'Free Your Spirit', a perfect mood build if ever we heard one. Two further gorgeously blissed-out post-rave comedown sounds close out this gem of an EP.

Review: London-based Japanese artist Junki Inoue founded Saisei last year with a stunning trio of releases featuring Kino-Moderno, COLOGNe and Suzukiski. Now the label sets out a more comprehensive mission statement for the sound they're exploring with this six-deep VA release featuring return appearances as well as some new faces. The overarching sound is one of 90s-flavoured techno with a melodic, melancholic quality as beautifully demonstrated by Palomatic on the stunning 'Under The Ground'. Interferon has enough punch packed into 'Blasting Soul' to stand up to some of the foundational Detroit techno gear, but crucially it's got plenty of heart to match its weighty impact. If you want to get a handle on how Saisei is progressing, or just need some fresh techno with soul and smarts, be sure to nab one of these gems.

Review: Yore Records have past form in sneaking out Detroit-rooted gear from legends masquerading under pseudonyms - rumours abounded around the one-shot Trackleton release back in 2009. Now here comes P0lyrhythm with a minimal amount of background information and some highly refined machine soul referencing the origins of techno in its title. It's either an extremely authentic-sounding tribute or a sneaky gift from a pioneer, who knows for sure, and more to the point who cares? It's magical techno with pure uplift in its bones, offering the kind of restorative approach which is so desperately needed when so much club music tilts towards annihilation. Highly recommended for all lovers of the original techno sound.

Review: Massimiliano Pagliara's debut solo EP on his own label Funnuvojere Records is a tribute to the late great Manuel Gottsching. He is a longtime fan of his work who tries to encapsulate the visionary synth sounds of his most famous and hypnotic piece 'E2E4'. He does so across three different interpretations of the same track, each of which tap into different artistic visions and skills. The first is an acid laced and percussive workout that keeps on building, the Traveler dub allows the piano chords more of a central role and The Lonely Drums mix strips things back to the rugged groove.

Review: 'Together Alone' is the latest flagship emoter from Pale Blue, a recent Crosstown Rebels signee and musical duo comprising Elizabeth Wight and Mike Simonetti. Wight's vocals on this neat slice of gut-wrenching wax glide across the mix in an honest fashion, recalling the muted serenity of trip-hop legends like Martina Topley-Bird or Tracey Thorn, but set to a minimal techno backing. Review: The Pale Blue project brings together Italians Do It Better's Mike Simonetti and Silver Hands' Elizabeth Wright, and the pair have done a fine job thus far exploring a club-ready kind of pop noir. On this single, the original version of 'No More Words' is present in its moody, subtly acidic form, Wright's coquettish vocal sitting atop the warm analogue backdrop oh-so comfortably. DJ Tennis steps up with a remix which edges a little more tech house bite into the rhythm section, and then on the B-side Perel offers up two much wilder versions which nod to Italo and industrial as much as anything contemporary.

Review: Rezpektiva looks to Berlin and the considerable skills of the enigmatic Mario Panagiotis for REZ24twentyfour. Rather than offering up new cuts, the producer has dug back into his discography to unearth four previously released gems from two separate EPs that were originally put out back in the mid-90s. There is some pretty wild variation as a result with opener 'Step 2' being a twitchy and dense early French house cut and 'Autumn' being more dusty breakbeat groover. There is plenty of funk and swing to the kinetic 'Do It Again' then 'Lost' closes out with some more bristling tech house beats this time overlaid with eerie synth phrases.

Juan Panza's 'Found Quite Place' is first up and a smooth-as-you-like dubbed-out tech roller with smeared chords radiating real heat. Franco Cinelli & Esteban Gutierrez then join up for the brilliantly carnival-esque tech cut 'Piso 11' (feat Lux Z). Review: Rebirth's fresh new 12" is a various artists affair that looks back while striding forwards. It is full of the sort of bliss out, dreamy, soft-edge deep house that is perfect for the warmer months and outdoor dances. Paolino & Gianni Bini lead the way with the effortlessly hazy and lush feeling 'Love' (Classic mix) while Sasha's 'Key To Heaven' is a perfect prog house tune that harks back to the heyday of Renaissance. Paramour & Adrian Morrison then link for the more dark and driving 'Transmutation' which has train track drums and suspensory chords always building but never bubbling over. Open Spaces run out with the widescreen and chunky dub house of 'The Far Side Of The Mood.'

What better way to mark the commencement of its third decade, then, than with some new music? 20 Years Of Phonica: Sampler 3 pulls together artists from the electronic vanguard, starting with Paramida & E-Talking's 'Read My Lips' which is an acid-laced 90s techno revival. Dauwd's 'Slam' is stripped back and pulses with acid and Daniel Avery's 'Bell' is languid, melodic and gorgeously serene techno. Review: Attention banger alert! Parissior is a Spanish DJ producer who has been producing countless tracks for many years now. His style could be described as a mix of dark disco, indie dance, Italo, and trance, but personally we think it goes much further. He has a total mastery of the art of production (something we have rarely seen); it seems more like sound design it sounds so huge. He's managed the perfect EP - one that all the Italian indie dance producers, one that even the biggest names in the genre have thus far failed to create. There's nothing cheesy about it; we've been listening to his music non-stop since we received it, with no weariness in sight. This guy is monstrous. The 12" begins with the brilliant 'Antennae', which is the perfect mix of Italo new wave & trance, followed by 'Canes Venatici', which could've been created by Daft Punk if they'd chosen to be less commercial. and put their balls on the table instead of hiding behind masks. 'Ceres' and 'Alpha Apodis' follow the same line. This maxi is gigantic - a f%c$ing masterpiece.

Review: The young Soul Touch Productions label knocks it out of the park once more with this new 12" featuring Motor City royals at the top of their game. Terrence Parker kicks off with the beautifully uplifting 'Tonight We Luv' with its streaming and soulful melodies and nice smooth drum loops. Review: Hot Creations's move away from creamy poolside house music has brought with it plenty of appealing new sounds for the wide-eyed raver. Tech soul is the order of the day on this new one from Paulo C who kicks off with the wonky tech workout that is 'Let The Bass Kik'. It has squealing leads and plenty of promise in the loopy drums that will keep floors bouncing for days. 'Can U Dance' is another punchy and full thrill house sound with razor-sharp hi-hats and raspy bass, then 'Red Green Yellow' shuts down with more grainy, gritty tech drums and loops designed to tease and please.

Review: Greg Paulus is a noted trumpet player who rose up through the ranks alongside the likes of Wolf & Lamb and Soul Clap. The American has genuine chops which he shows off once more here on an EP with Taylor Bense for the UK deep house dons at Freerange. 'Heat Makes Sense' is a leftfield sound with curious melodic motifs and off-grid bass notes next to funky whistles. 'Switch' (feat Stimulus & Malik Work) is then a more blissed-out and summary deep house groove and 'Marino' (feat Big $exy) comes alive with Paulus's trumpet licks bringing the playful and sun-kissed energy. Last of all is a nice stripped-back and dry tech cut, 'Do You Love Me?' (The Martinez Brothers edit).

Review: Edinburgh-based Peacey had a little help from label boss Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson and the latter's old pal Clyde on debut single 'Hold Me Back'. He's gone solo on 'Culture Bandit', which like its predecessor is a taster for Peacey's forthcoming debut album. In its original form (side A), the track blurs the boundaries between 21st century Afro-house, the liquid, melody-driven fluidity of Atjazz's early works, the spoken word-sporting mid-2000s nu-jazz of Ursula Rucker (an effect heightened by Vanessa Hidary's brilliant beat poetry) and the dancefloor spirituality of Osunlade. It's fitting, then, that the latter delivers a typically percussive, musically rich and tech-tinged Yoruba Soul remix, with Martin Iveson delivering a typically fluid, deep and tactile Atjazz revision.

Review: Given her runaway success in recent years, it was almost inevitable that Peggy Gou would launch her own record label sooner or later. Wisely, she's chosen to kickstart said imprint - the freshly minted Gudu Records - with her first EP of fresh material for over 12 months. A-side "Starry Night" is an unashamedly positive and life-affirming affair, with Gou placing bouncy piano riffs, sultry South Korean and English vocals and Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style synth-bass atop a snappy, late '80s style house rhythm. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to the equally loved-up "Han Pan", where Gou's attractive vocals once again catch the ear alongside heavy analogue bass, chiming synth lines and Kwaito influenced drums.

Review: Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes lead singer Teddy Pendergrass is one of soul music's most underrated artists if you ask us - and he has a remarkable story that rather took a tragic turn later in life and is well worth reading about. Here a couple of his golden gems get reworked by Mike Maurro for the Brookside label. First up is the gentle soul and lavish arrangement of the deep rolling 'Close The Door'. On the B-side you will find 'Only You', a more upbeat dancefloor heater with fat and plump drums and disco energy topped with Teddy's buttery vocals.

It remains a fertile scene, too, with several new artists and labels always coming through and the latest is Capybara which kicks off with this fresh new various artists EP. Review: Razor-N-Tape is like catnip to disco and funk lovers - the label seems to serve up endless amounts of dance floor gems and now it is a couple of sick remixes of Phenomenal Handclap Band which have got us all ready for the weekend. First up is a sublime and deep Prince Thomas Diskomiks of 'Burning Bridges' which has gloopy bass and leggy nu-disco drums all overlaid with some funky guitar work and ethereal vocals. The more slow and lumpy original is included while on the flip is 'It Was The Summer' (Each Other remix) which is laced up with restless acid tweaks and slapping hits that mark for a much darker vibe than the hazy and laidback original.

Review: New Zealander via Berlin Philippa's passion for house music, tireless commitment to her craft and ear for what makes a dancefloor tick is slowly but surely starting to pay off. With her recent release, 'Rainy Nights', on Slothboogie and 'Things I'd Like To Be' for Razor n Tape getting a lot of love, Philippa continues to deliver the goods, further lending remixes for Fat Freddy's Drop (The Drop) and Roach Motel (Faith). Here on the 'Latent Magic' EP we're treated to three new tracks highlighting Philippa's deft touch and musical approach to making interesting and leftfield house. Opener 'Hold' sets the tone with lush orchestral strings, crunchy drums and a bouncing analog synth bassline, while 'There It Is' umums hints of Mr Scruff with looping horn stabs, live drum grooves and rolling basslines. All in all, another mighty fine Philippa release recalling the early days of Freerange when artists such as Square One, Shur-i-kan and Jimpster were melding live musicians with electronics, for a refreshing, UK-centric take on house music.

'Hacido' kicks off with pulsating techno drums and layers of shiny synth that are topped off with rubbery acid loops. 'Tensao' then sinks into a deeper groove with hints of synthwave and dark disco under a deadpan vocal. It's a strobe-lit slow burner that will cause real carnage. Review: London based Sosure Records releases their next house music 12". The 'Sweet Talk' EP by Physical Education carries four prime cuts of deep house business on one sweet piece of wax. Fans of Chicago house that are on the jazzy tip are sure to like the title track and 'Work On That Soon' for their ability to move people yet still be deep enough for the discerning house music heads. Our favourite of the lot just might be the ender 'Dreamsville' for its super cool bassline and catchy piano use. This is a strong four tracker that can do some dancefloor damage. A great find.

Review: Violet Series is looking back to the tech house heyday for this second in its new series. That is where they find Z. Pisu's 1995 EP Electric Voyage for the Mater Mediterranean Records label he headed. It's an EP that has grown ever more revered over time and will cost you not far off three figures for an original copy. All four of the original tracks feature here from the low-key, piano-laced depths of 'Electric Voyage' to the more edgy and amped up, crisp and driving tech of 'Count Again.' Things get more dark, heads down and twisted on 'Sunrise' then it's heads up and arms in the air for the joyous closer 'Fuckin' All Music.'

Review: Who doesn't love a bit of poppers, a silly head rush that is very briefly all consuming then gone in an instant. Well this artiss of the same name offers more lasting thrills with this fresh house EP. The titles are all tongue in cheek slights at some of dance music biggest apparent ills starting with streaming giants Spotify. It's a low slung and sleazy cut for early doors. 'Fuck RA' then brings raw retro drums and proto-house vibes, 'Fuck CDJS' is a tropical disco cut with steamy vocals and 'Fuck Social Media' is a sample of a commentator working an Argentina game and getting very excited about Lionel Messi.
