Review: Fans will be sad to learn that Summvs is the fifth and, apparently last album from this revered collaborative duo of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Carsten Nicolai aka Alva Noto. They have been hard at it since 2022 and produced a fine body or work that mixes both of their respective backgrounds seamlessly. Sakamoto is of course the master of playing evocative piano compositions and Nicolai is the digital done who brings the fresh rhythms and subtle manipulations. Revel in this one, then, cause it is the end of a fine story.

Review: Back in the early-to-mid 1990s, Robert Fripp collaborated with numerous ambient house-era electronic artists, including the Orb (see the largely forgotten FFWD>> album) and The Grid, who invited the long-time Brian Eno collaborator to recording sessions back in 1992. While some of the latter material made it onto their '90s albums, much of Fripp's work - dreamy guitar textures, drone works and other electronic experiments -was left in their archive. Leviathan is based around these unissued recordings, with Dave Ball and Richard Norris adding their own new sounds to create a string of beautiful, meditative, and picturesque ambient compositions that sit somewhere between their own ambient works, Norris's recent modular electronic explorations, and the forementioned FFWD>> project.

Review:  The latest of Radiohead's reissues is an utter avalanche of material. 'Kid A Mnesia' itself is an 'album mashup' between their two albums Kid A and Amnesia; both projects are remastered and released side-by-side on the same LP. It doesn't stop there: for the fanatics, there's an exclusive third disc, Kid Amnesiae, which contains formerly unheard material both recording sessions, as well as Kid Amnesiette, a cassette of B-sides. This ultra-deluxe edition is, decidedly, one for the ultra-fans. Besides the radical electronic fever dreams making up both projects, this version contains the never-before-heard song 'If You Say The Word' on the bonus CD. Remastered on vinyl and cut at half the speed of the original LP, it's an audiophile's banquet. Also watch out for the exclusive booklet of drawings that come with the special edition of this special edition.

Review: Milan's Radko first appeared a few years back on Enfant Terrible with the Cherno PPP / Brutalista ?(7') and finally resurfaces with this full-length for sublabel Gooiland Elektro titled The Dirt On Caligula. Described as darker, harsher and more daring, the album takes you deeper into their industrial sound. Opener 'Hip Dork' is a contorted kind of techno derivative that lunges straight for the jugular, while the paranoid and dystopian atmosphere created on 'Manfria' sets the scene in dark ambient style before unleashing a barrage of electro beats. Over on the flip, the gloomy vocal cut 'Leper Colony' takes influences from darkwave, ending with the punishing and abrasive grind of 'Volga' which is pitch black.

Review: Returning with their heftiest and most malevolent work to date, Desolation's Flower marks the fourth full-length from the Oakland based queer blackened screamo-sludge two-piece Ragana. Their first effort upon signing with extreme purveyors of underground ugliness The Flenser (home to caustic noise-rock titans Chat Pile and ecstatic black metal newcomers Agriculture), the LP serves as a creative rebirth following their longest gap between projects yet, with their preceding third LP You Take Nothing arriving back in 2017. Continuing their grim excavation into hideous sonic malaise, yet with an expanded palette of grooving doom, frenetic screamo-violence and heaving sludge metal ripped right from the banks of the bayou, this is a thick, dense, murky gaze into a void that spits back eternal blackness.

Review: Two years on from the release of his critically acclaimed "Wallflower" album on Ninja Tune, Jordan Rakei returns with his most eagerly awaited set to date. Happily, it doesn't disappoint. Beginning with the electronic soul-pop brilliance of "Mad World", Rakei effortlessly flits between synth-laden hip-hop-soul ("Say Something"), slinky downtempo songs ("Mind's Eye"), 21st century disco-boogie anthems ("Rolling Into One"), slow-burn musical fusions (the military drums, Juju guitars and heartfelt vocals of "Oasis") and the kind of sumptuous, sun-kissed fare that defies easy categorization. With Rakei's sultry vocals taking centre stage throughout, "Origin" is a sparkling set that just gets better with every listen.

Review: Under the now familiar Razmi alias, Phoebe Guillemot has spent the last decade carving a hard-to-pigeonhole musical niche that's all her own. While her music is always humid, heady, hallucinatory and intoxicating, it regularly draws on a dizzying array of styles. That consistent eclecticism is once again a major feature on Feu Fellets, her latest album-length excursion. Over the course of eight tracks, the Montreal native flits between Pat Metheny-meets-Steve Reich style Balearic brilliance ('Electric Counterpoint' inspired opener 'Risin'), dubbed-out mid-tempo chuggers ('Tien-Bon'), tropical breaks ('Zon Bien'), out-there bass music mutations (DJ Python hook-up 'Coucou Mon Ami', the two-step-fuelled psychedelia of 'Feu Foillets'), sparkling peak-time joyfulness ('Zombini'), and much more besides. In a word: essential!

Review: As well as coming on vinyl, this new album from Hania Rani also comes as this CD version. 'On Giacometti' is the product of an extended residency in the Swiss mountains that focuses on the life and art of Swiss national treasure and sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Moving piano suites tempered by synth backings and ruinous ambiences are the names of Rani's game, all conveying the sense of peace exuded by the same Swiss mountains that struck Giacometti with divine inspiration. It is another superb piece of modern classical from the faultless Gondwana label.

Review: Whilst The Raveonettes' ten-year career to date has largely consisted of variations on a theme (namely a glamorously simplistic boy/girl take on Phil Spector through a wall of fuzz, with nods naturally to the Jesus & Mary Chain) 'Pe'ahi' shows them stretching themselves out beyond both the pop song format and their usual garagey instrumentation, and it's a departure that suits them. The duo of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, with the help of producer Justin Meldal-Johnson (Nine Inch Nails, M83) delve into hip-hop beats, walls of sampled noise, harps and choirs, yet their ear for a hook and their pop sensibility never ceases to shine through the chaos. Not only their most adventurous, but also their most personal record to date, this is the sound of a band expanding their comfort zone with style.

Review: The Town That Cursed Your Name is a welcome return from Glenn Donaldson aka The Reds, The Pink, The Purples. The LA-based artist says of the record that "I realised as I was piecing it together that it's a song cycle about trying to live while also feeling called to make music. The album addresses that duality ably with wry observation and a mix of the micro- and macroscopic realness Donaldson is so well-loved for. This record is heavier than the last with more fuzzy guitar textures and heavier lines throughout. From lo-fi to college rock, the influences here are varied and the songs are both beautiful and dazzling.

It became a cult classic almost immediately after release and after two early versions - one purple, one blue - sold out and started fetching high prices, Digger's Factory have got this latest back version out. During the writing of the record, Redveil took inspiration from drill music and local DMV area rappers and cooked up his own take on hip hop and jazz-rap. As well as the great penmanship and wordplay, Morton also took care of the production himself on this one. A fine debut with no doubt much more to come from him in future.

Review: Originally from Jamaica, Dizzy Reece went on to become a legendary jazz trumpeter from the mid-50s onwards, and Star Bright is surely one of his finest moments. Recorded for Blue Note in 1959, the album features Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Taylor on drums and Wynton Kelly on piano, and if the hard bop sound is your thing, you really shouldn't be without this album in your life. From the loping opening of 'The Rake' to the sprightly 'Groovesville' and onwards, it's pure magic on the ears, freshly pressed up for an immaculate listening experience.

Now with UK distribution via punk indie label Venn Records and Wiretap in the US, 2022 is poised to be the year that many get to know the enigmatic, snarky yet unashamedly catchy crew for the potential emo titans they could become.

From the crunchy aggro/sweet embellishments of 'Carousel' to the Shame meets Jimmy Eat World fusion of wit and sincerity on fuzzy opening standout, 'Post Paris Blues', this debut deserves to be given careful consideration by anyone who likes their punk a little bit sugary, or their sugar just a tad gnarly.

Pitched somewhere between electro-swing and more hip-hop orientated cut and paste samplers, this is an album full of thrills and spills, with plenty of jazz and beats to keep fans of multiple genres.

From the ashes of previous project Home Alone, Italian Ramones worshippers Retarded debuted their retro brand of punk madness in 1998 before their self-titled debut would arrive the following year. Over two decades later, the album has only grown in underground popularity, with Rolling Stone magazine even branding the record as one of the best Italian punk albums of the 90s. Complete with an exclusive bonus track and a polished double-sided insert, there's never been a more ideal time to rediscover an underappreciated gem and add a questionably titled release to your punk wax shelflife.

Review: Crooning has been back in fashion for well over a decade, albeit crooning through the eyes (or voice) of millennial and now Gen Z artists. Crooning that marries the classically smooth lyricism of the Brat Pack, soul and jazz, with elements of hip-hop, R&B and electronic music. With this in mind Rex Orange County came along at the right time, even if he was late to join the likes of Frank Ocean at the party.

'Bcos', his youthfully abbreviated, graffiti-scratched-into-school desk debut album - here on vinyl for the first time - certainly made a bold statement of intent. From the most traditionally soulful, perhaps the guitar-vocal whistle infectiousness of pared back "Corduroy Dream", to the loosest and jazziest ("Portrait Of Ned"), and the hippest and hoppiest (the delightfully offbeat and politically astute "Green Eyes (Part 2)", it remains a pleasure from start to finish.

Based in Ghent, Belgium it is a joint venture between multi-instrumentalist and producer Reinhard Vanbergen, Charlotte Caluwaerts of Tundra fame and Mo Disko who you will know from electronic pair The Glimmers. For the title track, Stephane Misseghers (from dEUS) joins them on drums and Bruno Coussee plays bass and it makes for a standout single "about drugs and good times, but also about hangovers, loneliness, and a twist of identity crisis." It is backed up by plenty of other innovative tunes.

Review: From a cover image wonderfully displaying the proportional difference between humans and the world we call home, to the expansive pedal steel guitar chords that weep their way through the musical destinations here, Raymond Richards encapsulates the vast openness of the US in sound, offering aural interpretations of the beauty and desolation, hope and devastation this wildly rich but painfully unequal country is home to. Track titles are inspired by real pins on the map, although it's unlikely you'll recognise many - we're talking 'Paradise, California' (a swooning, sun-kissed closing overture), 'Astoria, Oregon' (a lilting, vast but quiet slice of ambient) and 'Roslyn, Washington' (which sounds like psychedelic country) rather than more obvious places like Los Angeles, where Richards stomped about with the likes of DJ Lovefingers and Slowdive affiliates Mojave 3 in the late-1990s.

Review: Before he called time on his lengthy career in 1982, legendary ska trombonist Emmanuel "Rico" Rodriguez became a regular contributor to the Two Tone label, recording two albums for the Coventry-based imprint. Both are now 40 years old - hence this reissue of the second, Jama Rico. Unlike its predecessor, That Man's Forward, Jama Rico looks further afield for inspirations, with the trombonist's usual easy-going reggae and ska instrumentals being joined by a handful of tracks that draw inspiration from West African rhythms and spaced-out jazz-funk. As a result, it's arguably one of his most vibrant and interesting solo sets, while the inclusion of the Special AKA on final track 'Easter Island' highlights his link with the Specials (famously, Rodriguez performed on 'Message to You, Rudy').

Free Your Soul (feat Dave Koz & Jose Antonio Rodriguez) (5:27)
Review: Recorded at home in Ringo Starr's Roccobella West studio, the former Beatles drummer has drafted a number of long-term partners in crime for his latest release. Those names include Steve Lukather, Linda Perry, Fave Coz, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, and Bruce Sugar, among others. But, ingredients aside, what's the end result actually like?

Well, for one thing, it feels like a record made with camaraderie. The appropriately-titled 'Everyone & Everything' has a definite Fab Four vibe to its outro, requesting that all in earshot get involved in a chorus designed to get everyone and everything singing along. 'Let's Be Friends' takes that atmosphere to the after party, "Ya, ya, ya, ya" vocal hook making the whole thing sound slightly madcap. Meanwhile, closer 'Free Your Soul' invites us into smoother and sexier surrounds via sax and tropical beats.

A cult hit in 1970, a global smash when re-released in 74, Come To My Garden hasn't enjoyed a reissue for over 10 years. Her first pure soul and jazz album, this was the album where the world truly understood Ripperton's incredible range and tenderness. Powered by the breath-taking orchestration and song writing of Charles Stepney and her husband Richard Rudolph, everything about this album stands the test of time from the dreamy pastoral haze of "Close Your Eyes" or the delicate harmonies and nightingale rush of "Expecting" via the untouchable "Les Fleur". Immaculate music history.

Review: Soundway surpass themselves again with this wonderful reissue from the Ghanaian artist Rob, who released two albums back in 1977 for the West African Essiebons label. Rob was a seasoned musician in the 70?s, having recorded and toured with many well known bands. The album is a somewhat Spartan, brooding affair where less is most definitely more as slow burning, hip swaying cosmic funk drenched compositions are offset by wonderful punchy brass arrangements. A slow burning pulse is present throughout with highlights being ''Loose up Yourself'' and the irreplaceable carnal conquest anthem '' Make it Fast, Make it Slow''. Songs of celebration sit alongside other pieces of introspection and socially conscious topics; some might criticise the odd duff notes and occasional raw vocal edge, but this just adds texture to the overall performance and vibe. Without question one of the best reissues of 2012.

Review: On his first solo release for some three years, Robag Wruhme is in a retrospective kind of mood. "Wuzzelbud FF" has been trailed as a "stylistic follow-up" to 2004 debut album, "Wuzzelbud KK", with the long-serving German producer stating his desire to make some "straightforward music for the dancefloor". It's certainly true that the set contains some genuinely serviceable club cuts - see the mildly foreboding techno growl of "Provol Eto", delightfully metallic and wonky tech-house bump of the title track and creepy stomp of "Veddel Braav" - but there's so much more to it than that. Elsewhere on the set, Wruhme memorably turns his hand to glacial ambient, turn-of-the-90s ambient techno, B12 style IDM and, on the memorable "Maiowu", the kind of Squarepusher and Autechre style madness that would once have been called "drill and bass".

Review: Sebastien Robert is an interdisciplinary artist who is in emotive and explorative mood on Emerging Threshold, his debut long player. The record is a richly layered affair where field recordings and synthesised sounds all naturally coexist. There are new age elements and hints of kosmische musik to this ambient, but it is often intense and thoroughly involving rather than simply aural wall paper. The trutruka, a traditional wind instrument of the Mapuche people of south-central Chile, is a central tenet of the record which is the result of Robert's sonic exploration of the western flank of the Sierra Nevada volcano.

Review: Percussionist Robin Jones was one of the earliest - and eventually longest-serving - exponents of Latin jazz in the UK. While he guested on hundreds of records and was still playing a couple of years before his death at 84 last year, Jones only ever released a handful of albums under his own name. Arguably the best - and certainly most popular amongst Britain's legion of jazz-dancers - was 1972's "El Maja", credited to the Robin Jones Sextet. A scintillating fusion of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazillian rhythms laden with sprightly woodwind and brass sounds, jaunty piano, jazz-funk Rhodes sounds and notable nods towards rhythm and blues, the hard-to-find album has now been reissued by legendary London jazz DJ Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records imprint. It should be an essential purchase for anyone who loves Latin jazz.

Review: New Robohands LP Palms is the fifth album from the London based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter. Moving towards different genres and arrangements from his previous albums, 'Palms' features duelling harp parts, tape echo, double bass and draws inspiration from artists such as Dorothy Ashby, Azimuth, Alice Coltrane and Toquinho. In parts tropical and synth-drenched, and in others stripped-back and acoustic, Palms is a journey back in time to the saturated analog recordings of the late 60s and 70s, with a subtle modern layer of glitch FX and pitch-controlled experimentation in places. The album makes also reference to classic releases from jazz fusion that feature the legendary Arp Odyssey synthesiser, used by artists such as Herbie Hancock and George Duke.

Review: When The Rolling Stones head out on their American Tour of 1972, which has also come known as the "Stones Touring Party", or S.T.P., little did they know it would become part of rock and roll legend and very much set a benchmark for all rock bands after. It saw them play some of their first-ever gigs stateside all across the United States and Canada after previously only playing the Altamont Free Concert in December 1969. Now you can hear some of the magical moments on this live album including tunes like 'Brown Sugar' and 'Gimme Shelter.'

Review: Over the course of their epic career, the Rolling Stones has played countless now legendary concerts, though few quite as mythical as the two they held (in secret - fans thought they were going to see a then popular Canadian band) at the tiny El Mocambo Tavern in Toronto in March 1977. This double-disc set presents one of those shows in its entirety for the first time, with the band being joined on stage for the duration by the late, great Billy Preston. It's a genuinely terrific set all told, with the intimacy of the venue and the band's between-song chat adding only adding to the immersive feel. Highlights include - but are no way limited to - incendiary versions of 'Hot Stuff', 'Rip This Joint', 'Brown Sugar' and 'Tumbling Dice'.

Review: Cold Blow has a strong track record when it comes to reissues and retrospectives, though previously they've tended to focus on obscure electro, techno and IDM. Here the London-based label flips the script, offering up a new edition of Andy Romano's 2010 single 'Everytime I Feel Alright', which was inspired by the producer's love of vintage Italo-disco. The title track is pleasingly authentic-sounding, with Romano's effects-laden vocals and bleeping synthesiser lead lines and Harold Faltermeyer-esque stabs dancing atop a Bobby Orlando style bassline and unfussy machine drums. An instrumental mix is included, alongside two original B-sides: the Fairlight stab-sporting deep electro/Italo-disco fusion of 'L'Amour Robotique' and the vocoder-sporting KOTO tribute, 'Sayonara Robot'.

Review: Here comes a special transparent yellow vinyl version of Romare's new album on You See. His latest album Fantasy finds the widely admired artist take something of a new approach to his work. The man born Archie Fairhurst gets nice and abstract with his samples as he also layers in his own vocals and instrumentation. He has said the album was inspired by log walks and watching films doing lockdowns, and it shows. Hints of 70s fantasy cinema also features and his trademark off-kilter electronic rhythms and kinetic grooves also play a big part in making this one another winner.

Review: While Jimetta Rose composed the songs on How Good It Is, a collaboration with Los Angeles community gospel choir The Voices of Creation, during a period of personal hardship, even the album's most bittersweet moments feel hopeful and positive. As a result, the set's six tracks feel surprisingly joyous, with inspiring choral, solo and spoken word vocals rising above backing tracks that variously offer nods towards the Staple Singers, Funkadelic and Sly Stone. It's a genuinely timeless, life-affirming collection, with highlights including blindingly good opener 'Let The Sunshine In', the atmospheric, slow-motion shuffle of 'Operation Feed Yourself', the squelchy and suspenseful brilliance of 'Answer The Call' and the sweet release of original gospel compilation 'Ain't Life Grand'.

Atmospheric and with a live feel, it's not one to be missed.

He started producing in 1995 inspired by the house sounds of Chicago and broke through in 1997 with 'Baby Come On' which is credited as being the first proper footwork tune. Legacy Vol.2 is a collection of cuts created between 2002 and 2007 that tell the story of Boo's musical evolution as well as that of footwork itself. There is everything from the darkness of 'Eraser' inspired by visiting club War Zone on the west side of Chicago to 2005's 'Pop Machine', which was made when Boo worked at Speedway Oil Change and made use of a temperamental soda/pop machine. This is vital music history, frankly.

Offering the best in deep disco-breaks, laidback Blaxploitation funk and killer groove-based instrumentals, the album now comes accompanied by extensive new liner notes from Rubio and many of the crate-digging DJs who have been inspired by the album. The album - their sixth at the time - marked a superb comeback for the band having already hit massive sights with the previous platinum album Tougher Than Leather. Gangsta rap had rather pushed the group to the sidelines but this one brought them back to the fore with its catchy melodies and crunchy beats as well as superb bars. Review: While many solely know Rush as the iconic Canadian prog-trio to end all prog-rock acts, they didn't arrive right out of the womb with complex time signatures, Moogs synths and drumming god Neil Peart. All of these retrospectively essential identifiers of the band came organically over time, and by the stage they performed their legendary set at 1979's Pinkpop festival, all wheels were finally in motion. While 1976's 2112 is often heralded as the true arrival of Rush, it was the next two year's full-lengths, A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres, respectively, that charted their course full on into the realms of conceptual songwriting and challenging artistry. This collection captures an earshot of their set at the renowned Dutch festival, unveiling several of their virtuosic, astral compositions for unfamiliar enthusiasts who just wanted to rock, not think, and now you can get in on the immortalised bewilderment.

Coming once again to Suction Records, 'New Discoveries' sidesteps into the realm of dreamy Detroit-style techno, framing acid braindance through the lens of this important midwestern US dance genre. Recalling the recent sounds of Bochum Welt or Roy Of The Ravers - and more classic ideas from UK-Detroit producers like B12 and Kirk DiGiorgio - this is a fantastically astral acid release.

That one reworked both classic and modern songs with some new moments in between and this one again reworks some classics by the likes of Billie Eilish, Paul Simon, Sam Smith, Peter Gabriel and others. It makes for something again lyrically powerful with beautifully emotive tunes and real honesty at their core. These personal reworks are things of real joy.

Since then, however, the Homegrown label has matured and developed into the fine beast that it is now, and the duo's style is most certainly a darker shade of grey. They haven't lost their seductive, funky style, though, and the opening "What Would" is a delicious mix of anything remotely related to soul, while "Back Door" delivers a fine, electronic r&b slow-jam, and "Fly Is Now" is what soul sounds like on Saturn. This has to be one of the nuttiest, most diverse soul releases that will grace 2017, and the title track "Slave Music" will undoubtedly be imprinted in your mind upon first listen.
