Cat: HOTC 140. Rel: 10 Oct 19
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Bappi (5:59)
  2. Bappi (Warehouse mix) (6:42)
Review: Jamie Jones has been busy in the studio after another busy summer lighting up Ibiza, because this is one of two new offerings this month. It finds the agenda-setting Welshman on his own Hot Creations and in collaboration with The Martinez Brothers. Between them this celebrated collective lay down "Bappi", all drilling bass and razor sharp hi hats that are deep but driving. Flip over for a "Warehouse Mix" which recalls old school Windy City basslines and pixelated chords lighting up the bare bones grooves.

Review: Russian tech house hero Tripmastaz is back with more adventures in swing, making a surprising appearance for PETS Recordings with his new jam "R U Happy". This rolling and hypnotic groove with its infectious vocal refrain and tunnelling melody ticks all the right boxes - expect to hear this everywhere from Hoppetosse to Club Guesthouse this year. On the flip, there's a tougher, funkier and breaks driven rework by Bass Culture main man and all round Parisian legend D'Julz which is equally worthy of playtime. The Plant 74 main man continues to impress us after some great releases this year on No. 19 Music, Tartouffe and Berg Audio.

  1. Push It (6:41)
  2. Modulation Tropique (6:58)
  3. Locoliente (7:42)
Review: Serial collaborator Romain "Traumer" Reynaud is at it again, this time joining forces with fellow Parisian producer Gregory "Point G" Dorsa for a three-track workout on INFUSE. The experienced duo predictably hits its stride from the word go, serving up some swinging rhythms, hypnotic sub-bass and Salt & Pepa samples on peak-time tech-house box jam "Push It". There's a more percussive and slightly glitchy feel to the bongo-laden "Modulation Tropique", while banging B-side "Locoliente" feels like the kind of bouncy tech-house floorfiller that Sheffield sorts Swag used to do so well in their early 2000s pomp.

Breakbeat
  1. Michael's Path (7:15)
  2. I Hate Anthea Turner (6:58)
  3. Space Port (4:36)
Review: Mint Condition's ear for essential reissues has struck gold time and time again. Next up in their spotlight is a 1996 EP from Two Full Minds that was first released by Bushwacka! & DJ Vorn. Whether the agelessness of this record is a testament to the producers' original vision or a sign that dance music doesn't evolve as much as it thinks is unclear, but what's certain is that these tracks bang. There's the impish cosmic synths and clacking breakbeats of the title track, the brilliantly named "I Hate Anthea Turner", which is a spaced out garage-tech kicker, and ecstasy rush of closer "Space Port" all ready to do damage on the floor.

Cat: DIAL 062. Rel: 05 Mar 12
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Stills
  2. The Afternoon Grid
  3. Breezy
  4. Hunter
Review: Utilising the skills he learned mixing tracks for the likes of Pole and Pantha Du Prince, Kassian Troyer delivers his new EP, Stills, on Dial. The record opens with the sumptuous title track, featuring beautifully shuffling hi-hats and a subtle yet mesmerising synth progression. "The Afternoon Grid" offers more of the same, gently building a dazzling listening experience that delivers sheer aural serenity. "Breezy" takes things a bit deeper, and slightly darker, moving the rhythm with a swelling bass line accompanied by the distinct shuffle of stripped down garage aesthetics. "Hunter" slows everything down, closing out the record as blissfully as it began; Troyer using the tempo to open up masses of space and filling it with delicate, sparkling house.

Techno
  1. Insanity Dub
  2. Rusty Flashback
  3. Garden Of Corrosion
  4. Pepper Jones
Review: Building on the momentum of the strong reissue programme undertaken at Thule Records HQ, Thor returns to the fray with some new productions that add a new chapter to the story of Icelandic techno. This limited run of Decay appropriately comes on marbled grey vinyl. Of course, the unique atmosphere the label carved out in the 90s has been left intact - the dubby processing and icy melodies abound throughout, creating utterly immersive techno and house variations in the process. "Insanity Dub" has a live feel to its drum set which injects a curious disco energy into the mix, while "Rusty Flashback" takes things in a subtle tech house direction. "Garden Of Corrosion" stands apart with its slender sound palette, placing the emphasis on groove and swing, while "Pepper Jones" ramps the dub techno exploration up to 11. If you love the sound of Thule, you're going to love this.

Deep House
  1. Before
  2. Groove 11
Review: REPRESS ALERT: This return of Ferox records sees an enthusiastic response from all. The label has forthcoming releases from many original Ferox artists and some new recruits and collaborations along the way. This, the first release in 5 years, sees label head-honcho Russ Gabriel in action under his Too Funk guise. From the first 'Return Of Too Funk EP' to the later 'Hotel Ibis' and Derrick Carter's remix of 'Venus Fly Trap', Russ's Too Funk grooves have been jacking dance floors on both sides of the Atlantic since 1995. This latest offering, 'Phase 3', is a 45 rpm two tracker of House goodness only available on vinyl. No clear favourite has emerged from the two sides, among the selective few that have heard it. Like much of the wealthy Ferox catalogue before it, this is proper House Music with an electric twinge.

Techno
  1. Blue Rawls
  2. Meet The Butcha
Review: Last seen excelling on The Corner, NYC techno man Phil Moffa adds Hypercolour to his prospering profile with Rogue Music, a 12" hook up with the irrepressible Seth Troxler. Whilst this may not be the most immediate of collaborative endeavours you could think of, there is still plenty to enjoy here with "Blue Rawls" a perfect balance of stripped back, bone shaking rhythm and a growing sense of textural foreboding. It's the sort of track you can lay down after a frantic bout of drums to really hypnotise the dancefloor. Complementing this, "Meet The Butcha" heads off into seven odd minutes of bugged out house territory and leaves us clamouring more from the pair.

Review: The Jack's House label lays out a manifesto on the brand of refined deep and minimal house that makes its switch flick with this choice various artists release. Two Diggers are up first with "Trick Me", a subtle but immersive slice of deep house that punches where it counts. James Dexter takes a trippier approach with "Cables", letting artful delays and modulation ping around the mix for a truly standout club jam. 2VILAS have a focused drive behind "Verve", but then Miffy & Miller come bowling in at the 11th hour with "Vertiver" and pump things up to a mid-00s Plus 8 style bounce, and who can blame them when they bring such peak-time heat?

  4. Kilian Vega - "Ardour"
Review: Jack's House is back with another wedge of crucial cuts from a spread of big hitters, kicking off with Alex Arnout and the tightly wound roller "Hypersomnia." Tuccillo is in a heads down mood on "Another Day," letting the drums and the bassline do the brunt of the work. Terry Francis favours a heavy, smoky sound palette that has a bassline that will do some serious damage on a decent system - "Jua" is easily the strongest track on the record. Killan Vega closes the record with a smart deep house jam peppered with crafty sound design elements that lift the track beyond the average chord-led workout.

  4. Henry Hyde - "Hello Spcshp" (5:49)
Review: The fifth NorthSouth release plunges once again into the melting pot of producers seeking new variations on the house and techno format, leading in with London minimal champ Voigtmann. His "Separation Attitude" takes on the kind of wild, expressive machine funk you'd expect from Spacetravel, cosmic and pumping in equal measure. The "Dogleg Detour" mix of The PGA's "Deep In The Bunker" makes powerful use of a spacious mix to let the bassline strut its stuff, while Chris Geschwindner's crafty 2-step construction on "Dale's Lullaby" should appeal to all those digging garage beats matched with techno atmospherics. Henry Hyde's "Hello Spcshp" takes a distinctive approach to acid electro that should find favour with body popping freaks who like their jams playful and a little off kilter.

Review: Transmitting out of Birmingham and representing the cream of the sleek tech house crop, Adam Shelton's One Records continues to forge valuable connections with the global scene while staying true to the label's roots. Shaun Reeves and Tuccillo have been doing their thing for long enough to know how to throw down a surefooted deep groover, and that's just what you get with "Smile". Meanwhile The Mole does a sterling job of working some complex percussion into the bones of the track and creating a hypnotic, understated version that will appeal to the freakier end of the floor.

Review: Next up on the ever-excellent Oscillat is "Spellbound" by the supremely talented Matthew Dekay. This moving deep house jam uses a few key elements to make a soul-stirring confection for truly spine-tingling moments in the middle of the dance. From the slithers of vocal to the insistent key riff that bounces throughout, this is an outstanding slice of contemporary house music loaded with feeling. Mandar then take the original and inject it with a feisty peak time energy shot through with a little trancey magic and an acidic undertone. It's not a raging beast but rather an energizing workout for the brain and the body - just what you need in the midst of a marathon.

Review: The Unblock label hits its seventh release with a split EP featuring rising talents Tato and Tijn. The sound on the 12" fits right in with the previous transmissions from Tuccillo, Tomoki Tamura and more besides, taking a quirky approach to stripped down house and techno dynamics to create intriguing party fodder for inquisitive dancers. Tato's "Estic" does a wondrous job of twisting up tribal percussion with a snaking minimal groove, while "Lusyourmaind" brings a cheeky housey shuffle to the proceedings while keeping things a little mysterious in the same breath. Tijn's "Stranger Things" is a light and airy minimal house jam that contrasts neatly with the hook running through the centre of "Piano Tool".

Review: Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo are back together once again as Doublet, with both seasoned tech house champs having fun in the studio jamming out the kind of stripped back, heads down grooves you'd expect to hear them play out. "Tee's 8" is a cheeky A side jam with the kind of acid line that goes down easy and then works you from the inside out. "Three Thousand Men" has a slight dubby thread to it which sits comfortably amongst the sturdy groove of the drums, and then "Tentation" switches gears for a bright and melodic creation that skips around in funky syncopation without even needing to worry about a kick drum.

Review: EYA Records presents a double 12" of plush techno and house spanning styles, giving four producers the chance to showcase the breadth of their sound with two tracks each. Innershades brings emotive 90s swoon and peppy acid to the A side, before Two Phase U slips in a little uptempo robo-disco sauce and a feisty jack track. Otis takes things in the direction of wiggy proto-trance and bleep techno, and then Zots finishes up with freaky synth work dripping with mischievous personality. This is a set of tracks that demands to be noticed - don't sleep.

Review: Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo first fired up their Doublet collaboration back in 2015, and after a brief hiatus they've reignited the project with another three delicate and dynamic excursions. "Chotto Complications" is a crafty construction that works around an electro framework, with intricate beat programming and nimble synth lines anchored by fulsome chord drops. "Big Moon" takes things into a more hypnotic headspace, using hushed tones to mark out the atmosphere around an undulating deep house groove. "Tiger Nuts (dub)" is the feistiest track on the record, using a punchy rhythm section and nagging sample daggers to create an insistent groove that will do the damage for the tech house cognoscenti.

Review: Japanese techno legend Fumiya Tanaka returns to his own Sundance imprint with a brand new 12" with a customary strange and cryptic title. While information is scarce on the theme behind "We Would Like To Do Song For The Step", we can happily report that the Berlin-based artist's penchant for deep, hypnotic minimal house is on full force across the EP. We can easily imagine the dusty and understated title track being played on a Sunday afternoon at Hoppetosse, along with "In A Memorable 2018" where ethereal samples sit atop a groovy percussion layer. If you're longing for some old Tanaka material, the bass-driven and rolling minimal funk of "Don't Stuporous" calls to mind some of the quality grooves found on his acclaimed "Beautiful Days" series a couple of years back.

Review: It would be fair to say that Claque Musique, a freshly minted outlet for tactile tech-house, skewed deep house and otherworldly techno, has hit the ground running. Their debut release is something of an epic, featuring eight tried-and-tested cuts stretched across two slabs of wax. There's plenty of subtle variety on show throughout - compare, for example, the hissing percussion, jaunty synth bass and trippy spoken word vocals of Carola Pisaturo's "Ganzirri" and the jazzy, dub-flecked deep house shuffle of "Cenere" by Calma - plus a swathe of notable highlights. This include the spacey machine funk of Analog Inside's wonderful "Deep Time '88" and the psychedelic acid madness of Iuly B's "Alien Acid", whose delay-laden percussion hits are particularly wonky.

Review: The Nubreed series has built amazing momentum over the past year and Global Underground are very proud to announce Denney as the newest DJ to turn in a future classic for the iconic series. The British producer has stated that this three month labour of love resulted in the most personal and emotive selection of music he has made in his career thus far. He thought his Essential Mix was tough going - but mixing Nubreed 12 he felt he reached another level. Features 29 tracks, including four exclusives from Denney and friends, with highlights such as the artist's own "Genena", the Andy Cato classic "7AM Drop", legend Danny Howell's massive "Isolar" and the progressive house classic "I Wish You Were Here" by John Creamer & Stephane K (feat Nkemdi - Omid 16B Revisit remix).
