Welcome To Rave EP

Acid Mutant - "Disco Balls" (7:06)
P I N O Lopez - "Welcome To Rave" (7:07)
Vlado 303 - "Drug System" (6:53)
Acid Ray - "Winder" (7:16)
Review: From the title to the artwork, everything about this EP screams high energy and peak time dancefloor explosions. And so it proves when you drop the needle into the first groove. It is Acid Mutant who kicks off with 'Disco Balls' which has lacerating synths spraying about the mix over turbo charged beats. P.I.N.O. Lopez then keeps up the pressure with 'Welcome To Rave' with its squiggly acid lines and hurried, hard hitting drums. Flip it over for the high octane thrills of Vlado's 'Drug System' strap in for one last helter-skelter in the form of 'Winder' by Acid Ray.

Afrikan Simba - "Wonderful World" (3:48)
Vibronics - "Beautiful Dub" (3:48)
Review: Italian label 4Weed Music is all about music you might want to smoke to, as the title suggests. It's an ever-expanding indie that deals in serious sound system, dub and bass tackle. This new one 'Wonderful was originally produced on the Japan riddim which was composed and arranged by Dread Lion Hi Fi following Japan's 2011 T?hoku Earthquake and the ensuing tidal wave that struck. He wrote it in Italy and it features the line "From Milano Italy to Tokyo Japan" in honour of that over hefty low ends, steely mid-range leads and ricochetting hits. A fat dub is found on the B-side of this release which was for years thought lost until a hard disk turned up the treasure.

Jamie Anderson & Owain K - "Aqua Dub" (7:36)
Francisco Aguado - "Balance" (7:19)
Star Dub - "Forst" (7:03)
Volpe - "Ever Growing" (6:13)
Review: OHM is quickly becoming a quality imprint you can count on for techno and dub techno. The ninth addition in the series, it calls for an excellent blend of composers to balance this EP out. Veteran Jamie Anderson collabs with the brilliant Owain K on opener. The 'Aqua Dub' builds a euphoria for late night smiles. Smooth is an understatement on this linear gem. One artist on here that's been making strong appearances on many dub techno labels is the ever-talented Francisco Aguado. 'Balance' is a great tribal transition track for any DJ who can it creatively to build the means to an end. On the second side, Star Dub offers the very addictive and techy 'Forst'. Ending on a high note, the brisk and flighty 'Ever Growing' by Volpe completes the ninth edition in a rapturous mood. If you like deep techno, the OHM series is a must to collect.

Aron - "Shift"
Distilled Noise - "Trenta"
Idana - "Sunday"
Vern - "Orizont"
Review: Italian label Micro Orbit takes its bow here in the form of a various artists' EP across a nice heavyweight 12". Aron opens up with 'Shift' which is a bubbly minimal house cut with aqueous synths and popping drums. Distilled Noise's 'Trenta' then layers up more silky synth sounds with underlapping bass waves lifting you off your feet. Idana ups the ante with more uptempo and quickened drums and bass loops that are detailed with gorgeously wispy melodies on 'Sunday' before Vern closes down with 'Orizont' which is the most sleek and tech-y cut of the lot. As far as first releases go, this is one that bodes well for the future.

Review: Silkybeats - a brand new imprint with a specific vision in tricky-shuffly dance music - debut their first ever V/A release here, providing a smashing debut and a taster for increasingly sumptuous things to come. Selected by one Velvet Velour, the producer and curator here invites three of the smoothest operators around - B.Love, Bowyer and Astral Wayne - to help cook up a selection of abstract, minimal breakstep and microhouse.

Stefan Braatz & Virgo Four - "Everyman Jack" (Rough dub) (6:13)
Rheji Burrell - "XTC" (6:08)
Rheji Burrell - "Gimme Ya Luv" (6:07)
Review: Classic deep house movements from Stefan Braatz, Virgo Four and Rheji Burrell, coming through with the maximized, wally acid heat. 'Everyman Jack' on the A-side orders punters to shake, albeit whoever recorded the vocal sample is clearly so confident of their floor-command that they barely needed to do more than whisper. Burrell helms up two new ones on the B, meanwhile, with 'XTC' remaining soulful, autotuned and piano-phasey, and 'Gimme Ya Luv' leaning towards low-end-theoretic hip-house.

Jah Mason - "The Motive" (3:26)
Von D - "Saga Riddim" (Horns mix) (3:33)
Review: The latest entry in this series from the Dub Suty crew managed to nod to the roots of digital dub and dancehall while also very much looking to the future. It sees the label team up with a producer who lays down the beast while different vocalists step up to add their own twist to the sonics. Von D is the man on the buttons and he crafts a seriously weighty stepper that comes with horns, keys, guitars and of course some alluring bars. Reggae singers Chukki Starr, Chezidek, and Jah Mason all come correct with this positive, uplifting messages of unity.

Iro Aka - "Void Index" (6:23)
Too Smooth Christ - "Avais Mariah" (6:16)
Volta Cab - "Titanium Stresser" (4:34)
Review: Mirko Hecktor and Tom Sprenger founded Terra Magica in 2021 as a platform for their brand of psychedelically-charged house and techno, and they've quickly built up a strong identity and a burgeoning community of likeminded astral travellers. Look no further than this quality split release for all the proof you need, as Lucas Croon threads Balearic, prog and trance together before the label bosses (Hektisch Sprengen DJs) weave some mystical mantras of their own and Dea revels in boxy Chicago jack crossed with Island boogie. It's an eclectic mix to be sure, with another three joints taking in uptempo proto-trance and anthemic emo-acid-breaks aplenty. Draw for the big feelings and get freaky in the process - what's not to love?

Review: Finnish underground icon Sasu Ripatti returns under his most frequently used pseudonym, Vladislav Delay, for another bout of Dancefloor Classics. The series has already established a loyal following, and the fourth episode is enough to explain why, even if you've not encountered any of the preceding instalments. Music for imagined dancefloors is how the official release information puts it, it quickly becomes clear just how vivid that imagination is. Throwing down a string of footwork inspired cuts, the four tracks here are frantically upbeat and packed with filthy, jacking potential. But they're also deep, at times ghostly - or at least a little eerie - and ground in a desire not just to make people move, but also push sounds forward into new territories. Never an easy line to tread, the overall results hit as hard as the beats themselves.

Polygonia - "Pearl Of Nian" (6:24)
Toki Fuko - "9128" (6:51)
Virya - "Dome" (4:56)
Review: MBMUSIC Ltd is a fledging label that serves up its first various artist release here. It is an enthralling five-tracker that opens up with the ocean-deep atmospheric techno of Daniel[i]'s 'Contemplate.' MBM then gets more busy with the percussive clatter of 'Crystalline' and Polygonia's aqueous dub techno roller 'Pearl Of Nian' is another unusual sound that draws you in deep. Toki Fuko's '9128' is more menacing and sounds like a deserted factory floor after all the staff have left and V?RYA's 'Dome' is a twitchy and restless broken beat excursion that has you looking over your shoulder.

Review: Robsoul Recordings has continue on the rich tradition of superb France deep hose for many years after the first wave of artists and labels came and went. This third edition of its Classic Sampler series is another joyous one that opens up with the jazzy loops and soul-drenched house grooves of Demuir's 'From Paris To Strasbourg'. Vincent Caira's 'Back Again' is more solid and raw but no less heartfelt then Mo'Funk & Roland Clark cut lose with an unabashed piano sound on 'Bring Together' that will get hands in the air. Interstellar Fugitives 2: Post Emancipation Psychosis
DJ S2 - "Post Emancipation Psychosis" (Von Floyd Lithium mix) (3:27)
Von Floyd - "Geiger Counter" (3:08)
Review: Underground Resistance likely owe much of their mythology to the Interstellar Fugitives series; a classic series telling the tale of the UR clique fighting oppression and music-industry corruption on a cosmic scale. It's certainly an experimental delight for most newcomers to the techno genre and/or those who want to trace the history of the sound. DJ S2 (aka. Suburban Knight) and Von Floyd (aka. Gerald Mitchell) are infamous members of the UR gang; both of them have enjoyed success in the genre, and as part of the clique, since at least the late 1980s. 'Post Emancipation Psychosis' is a classic slab of UR's anarchic, ironic militancy. With its orderly drum machine march, the eponymous track by S2 describes the paranoia and loss of mental clarity one might after having been freed from the coercive clutches of a former master; meanwhile, Floyd's 'Geiger Counter' is a super-early electro classic, channelling a bursting, radioactive soundbank even few producers today could replicate.

Review: DJ Trace's DSCI4 dropped the eight-track Spy Technologies X Sampler compilation last year, gathering together label classics, giving them a remaster and a digital release for the first time ever. Now this 12" cherry picks the strongest cuts and gets them back out there into the physical realm, focusing on Trace's own work and collaborations with his co-conspirators. The Concord Dawn remix of 'Mutationz' is a hyphy kick-off to the A-side before the dark n' deadly 'Move' link up with Ryme Tyme. Trace and Voyager turn up the pressure with the Reese attack of 'Sniper' and then it's Nico who joins the boss for a cooler, deadlier crusher called 'Replicants'.

Dragomir - "Revision" (8:25)
RQZ - "Panavision" (7:35)
Vid - "Oceans" (10:15)
Selidos - "Malina Fields" (6:35)
Review: Milan-based minimal label Micro Orbit has been busy kicking off a range of various artist series' in recent times, with the first Pioneer and Voyager EPs now followed up by Vol 1 of the Origins Series. As ever it's a chance to get a spectrum of the label's musical interests under your belt, with Dragomir setting the tone perfectly with the crisp, tool-like hypnotism of 'Revision'. RQZ has a fuller sound underpinned by warm bass and peppered with sound design, but the script is still resoundingly stripped back on 'Panavision'. Romanian stalwart Vid occupies the first track on the B-side with the slinky groover 'Oceans' before Selidos closes proceedings in style with the shuffling, tripped-out 'Malina Fields'.

Ventt & Keparys - "Saltwater" (8:40)
Review: This is the fourth compilation installment in Peace Symphonies' series that features multiple artists they are working with. Since starting up two years ago, this Moscow label is fast becoming one of the top avenues for house music in the country. DSF offers us 'Yes, Of Course' and 'Zorbas' for the A-side. The first one is a melodic builder that is equally beautiful as it is driving, giving us some soft trance vibes. The latter is a grooving techno jam that is spacey and ideal for stargazing on the dancefloor. For the second side, 'Ashwaganda' by Ventt & Keparys has a more tribal and African flavor to it. The EP closes out with the pair doing a fast-paced tech house gem in 'Saltwater', tinged with some superlative Balearic sounds.

Review: Vinyl Junkie catapults a brand new label into the universe and his intention is loud and clear - Badass authentic jungle craftsmanship for the ages. He's rolling neck deep with kindred soldiers; Radiokillaz and Fleck get wild on the breaks on 'Lakes On Saturn', Riffz dusts off the detuned rave stabs for that aggy hardcore flavour while VJ himself whips up some delightful breakbeat switchery that melts into a dubwise breakdown for momentary respite. Radiokillaz close down the EP with a touch of soul on 'Time Again', a poignant space jazz joint laced with mournful strings and a yearning vocal. Meltdown.

Abstract Division - "Convolution" (6:49)
DOM - "Oye" (5:22)
Review: Dynamic Reflection remains a steadfast platform for 'proper' techno with something to say. Since 2008 they've been pushing artists to match dancefloor functionality with original ideas, and so the story continues on this latest VA release. Veritable legend Function steps up first with the tense, restrained arp odyssey of 'Give Thanks To The Sun', while label regular Viels jumps in next with the ironically titled tough-trucking workout 'Fragile'. Abstract Division kick off the B-side with the sizzling, rippling 'Convolution' (not to be confused with the Skudge track of the same name), and DOM completes the picture with a teasing, broken rhythm and psychoactive frequencies of the highest calibre.

Nano Rinnegato - "Ghetto K" (5:51)
Review: A label's first release is always a big one which hints at what to expect in the long term and for that reason Introspective debuts with this new five track compilation. They say that "Instinctive Senses is a compilation focusing on precise and cutting sonorities." We say it is a fresh techno offering with plenty of interesting details. Grafin drops 'Vespers' which is tightly looped and quick as hell then SDB & B2 get more dark, heavy and gritty on the twisted 'Reunite.' The flip side kick off with more rough and ready hard edged techno from Specific Objects, sleek tribal loops from Versus on 'Those Things' and Nano Rinnegato gets paranoid and revs up the sirens on 'Ghetto K.'

Review: The Two & Half label is back after a head turning debut with a new various artists EP that lays out more of its singular sonic visions. Ionescu kicks off with 'Low Ride Her,' a balmy mix of lithe synths and cosmically minded pads that unfurl over fresh beats. Review: Drei Vinyl arrived with a bang earlier this year, firing off a 12" pointedly titled A New Beginning with four hi-octane slammers from the boisterous end of the techno spectrum. Now the label returns with an eagerly anticipated sophomore split-disc, The Essential Groove. Alexander Kowlaski opens the record up with the thunderous, nervy 'Breakpoint' before Thomas P. Heckmann whips out a fun and freaky throw down for peak time situations. On the B side Dejota Doblecero creates a motorik cacophony of rhythmic brilliance on 'Alta Frecuencia', Pergo creates an infectious strain of carnival techno and Vibrations Of Gravity jacks harder than anyone on the blistering 'I Think You Are Going To Like It'.

Review: James Mac and Vall have combined on this new deep house cut which leans heavily on a classic sample from some two decades ago. 'Try Again' is tense emotionally and physically with deep cut, well-defined grooves topped with the smooth vocal coos and rising synth tension. A Ben Miller 4am Afro dub then brings more skip and funk to the rhythms while Davi Penn keeps things tight and tech-y with his version. The Holseek remix is wired up with some twisted synth paranoia last of all is 'The Boy Is Mine' (feat Rosalie - Sasson remix) to close down this throwback EP.

This time around they're presenting the joint efforts of Maggio and Vitess, who pour considerable flair into their particular strain of 4/4 dancefloor delights. There's a strong melodic, synth-rich thread running through all these tracks, at times teetering towards the trance tech-house movement but retaining a little more house-spirited funk with some redolent disco influences on top. With a variety of keys to suit any emotional needs your set may have, this is another sure shot from one of the prime labels operating out of Venice.

It remains a fertile scene, too, with several new artists and labels always coming through and the latest is Capybara which kicks off with this fresh new various artists EP. Review: Two And Half Records make the decision here to try and rid the A and B-side distinction on records that we are all very familiar with and instead they refer to each face of their latest 12" as 'dance' and 'listen.'' It makes sense frankly and is often how things go anyway. Swiss duo Quismi kick off this one with twitchy and narcotic tech house with an old school bent. French artist Groenogen then gets wild with bright melodies and grinding synths, r&b vocals and high speed tech funk on 'Twinkle Dance' while ILyes offers the tech silkiness of 'Starting Now.' On the flip is a trio of less direct, more experimental sounds that sure do offer plenty to get lost in on headphones.

Rayo - "Purkhavka" (8:29)
Vinaya - "Mau Studio" (6:30)
Peshka - "Spozaranku" (7:08)
Dibe - "Exchange Pleasantries" (7:04)
Review: A new label fresh from Ukraine - Frequencies - gathers its forces for its first joint. For their debut V/A, four seasoned artists from around the country come together in the unity of sonic-national interest, pitting their skills behind the DAW side-by-side (nonetheless, these aren't mere bits to scratch your chin at). The deepchord-dubby 'Purkhavka' from Odesa native Rayo contrasts well with the snappier go-getter 'Mau Studio' from Vinaya, yielding an eclectic A-side from the jump. On the flip, the youngest of the bunch, Peshka, lays down 'Spozaranku', the acid-jammiest and most haunting track here, while ole' friend-of-the-label Dibe foments grittier and 2-steppier excitations with 'Exchange Pleasantries', which, despite its title, does just as well to transcend mere polite sonic formalisms.

Review: NYC based Onysia Records recently launched its sister label Convent for dub that it deems to be more heavy and edgy. This seance release is just that. Scientist vs anyone is going to be worth hearing. Scientist vs J Gabriel is about as good as it gets as, since making his debut, Gabriel has blurred the boundaries between electronic dub, deep house, dub techno and minimal. Here he's in full-on dub mode, with Scientist handling mixing duties for extra authenticity and a typically spaced-out sound. Mike Shannon and Deadbeat both step up on the flip-side to add their own delicious and hypnotic dub techno take.

Review: If you like your techno high speed and laced with a sense of urgent futurism then you'll love the opening cut of this new EP from top shelf pairing of Secure and Vil. It rides on a wave of optimism with buffed metal drums and amped up chord stabs that keep pushing you onwards as wet finger clicks and muffled vocal sounds finish it in style. 'Recoil' is another brilliantly lightweight rhythm that floats above the dancefloor while 'Chime Dub' very much nails you to it with its hefty low ends and percolating sense of darkness. Last of all comes 'Rumble The Funk' (Blasha Allatt remix) for another funky techno jaunt.

Review: Paling Trax 5 is a new record by TAFKAMP and Vromo, two techno artists from Rotterdam and Amsterdam respectively1. Paling Trax, meanwhile, comes as a new sublabel of renowned club pushers Self Reflektion, focusing on the comparatively rawer and groovier. Four tracks appear: 'Trakpad #1' and 'Ghett-hoes', courtesy of TAFKAMP, establish dub-tecchy and retro, MPC-style NRG respectively. Vromo's 'Clarity' and 'Pump The Rhythm' , meanwhile, both puslate in different ways, one locking in a serious respiratory mood, and the other sounding like a Bop-It jailbroken for the club.

Now, the Soundbath label has got together a first ever vinyl pressing and reissue of them which is sure to help them become classics all over again. That will certify be true of the one, Tsidi's 'Contagious' (Transcendal dub remix), which has everything required to become an anthem - the smooth female vocal, soft focus synths and subtle old school bass. Add in four other equally lush and romantic house sound and you have a real doozy.

With six tracks on a single 12", there's plenty of heat to get hold of here, whether it's the squashed slap bass funk of Aline Umber's 'Qu'un Jour Ca Dure' or the tweaked sonic trip-out of Eli Atala's 'City 17' you're in the market for. Review: The Valley and the Mountain aka TVTM aka Josh Dahlberg makes a bold return with 'A Number of Northwests', an EP which tells the tale of an artist in transition. Quite literally, that is, as he moved from Detroit's westside to the very far edges of the Pacific Northwest. Musical this is a stylistically diverse offering with four cuts starting with the mid-tempo smooth grooves of 'Bretton Drive' and glistening synths and pads of the cosmically minded 'Grand River Slide'. The chugging 'Ramps to Nowhere' is a dubbed out afters classic and then the one and only dusty deep house don DJ Aakmael remixes it into another cuddly classic.

Review: We cannot get enough of Washington, DC-based label Peoples Potential Unlimited. It deals in a particular brand of lo-fi funk and disco with a hit of the leftfield about it. This time out they unearth some lost recordings from Landyhill (Timex Social Club) Bay Area funk. It has the rude girl vocals of Jamie Vallo over crunchy beats, squeaking synth motifs and raw drum work. Word on the street is more demos have been found from the same era and are to be unveiled soon, but this previously unreleased jam is a great starter.

Review: Take Me For A Ride is the latest from Luuk Van Dijk on his own label Dark Side Of The Sun. The title track is a peak time tech house workout that is lively and energetic. Reminiscent of house at raves during the mid 90s, the combination of the vocals and rhythm makes this a fun track to listen to. The remix adds a New York house sound to it for a nice alternate version depending on how your set is trending. For the B-side, 'Doin' It' is a more mellow, dreamy and laid back affair while 'Sexy Motherf*cker' is a mid-set groover, all making for a versatile 12" that house music heads should get plenty of plays out of.

Review: Something in the Eastern European house and dance music proclivity has always struck us as enduringly authentic, perhaps due to its interest in folk music fusions; the label Sad Fun have surely played a key part in doling out this impression. Now they offer their latest addition to the fantasy with a label-described "true Estonian lowkey gem" in the form of duo Ajukaja & Edith Karlson, aka. Vana, whose combined efforts frankly, dustily and ironically toy with the pop music cliches native to their homeland. A-and-B-siders 'Vimme Ratsu' and 'Kuu Maa' are said to rework an '80s Estonian coastal folk-pop favourite and perform a "pseudo-reggae" pastiche respectively. Both have that effortless murmured charm on the vocals, recalling a nostalgic time of European make-do, A10-mic-from-the-junk-store, bottle episodic, rickety recorded goodness.

Review: Cold Busted ventures into downtempo and Balearic territory here with Vanilla offering up a limited but 7" full of hazy and lo-fi beat sketches that make you ache for a sun lounger and a warm day. The gentle beats of 'Pointbreak' are offset by wonky and detuned chords that bring a sense of irreverence and 'Surfin' Summer' then casts you adrift on nice lazy sax motifs. 'Remember' keeps the grooves slow and low and 'Breeze' shuts down with another cathartic and open-skied sonic excursion. A perfect accompaniment to some mental escapism, then.

Review: Daniela La Luz is no stranger to Rawax's stable of labels - she's previously released on most of them at different points over the last decade- though Global Transformation marks the first time she's appeared on any of them as Vanilla. The Berlin-based artist sets her stall out with the raw, punchy and occasionally sparkling title track - all woozy keyboard riffs, weighty electro-meets-house beats, tipsy chords and heavy bass - before opting for a deep, druggy, acid-fired and percussively propulsive vibe on 'The Last Window of Time'. Elsewhere, 'Animal Queendom' sees her wrap echoing, dubbed-out and reverb-laden synth riffs around a tough and locked-in beat, while 'All Together' is built around the twin attractions of sturdy, slightly off-kilter machine drums and jazzy electric piano motifs.

He has emerged from the Dutch underground to take the global circuit by storm as a DJ but also a studio slickster who fuses tech, minimal, house and breaks. His own label deals in just that and here it offers up a trio of trippy and future facing dance floor delights from Varhat. 'Daddy Beat' is a percussive beast leaning in on dexterous breaks from less-mined sources and keeping the pressure up around the 130 zone. 'Hold On' nods to Detroit techno in its swirling pads and machine soul bleeps, all the while trucking on a focused rhythmic trajectory. 'Surprise I'm Logan' returns to the drum funk sampling and 'Engage' locks into a distinctive strain of machine funk with plenty of hypnotic motifs and playful fills to turn heads in the midst of a marathon session.

Review: Fans of UK street soul from the mid-80s you need this one in your life as Heels & Souls Recordings returns with its eighth reissue and unveils some treasures by Elaine Vassell and 3rd Zone. In 1993, amidst the rise of house music, UK soul thrived, accompanied by its DIY street soul sibling as perfectly exemplified here by 'Never Give Up' which boasts a raw, breakbeat-driven groove, blending soulful house, hip-hop, and r&b, while 3rd Zone's 'You Stole My Heart' from 1991, later featured on their 1993 EP No Real Reason, offers a tender yet tough underground vibe. Both tracks showcase the era's spirit, proving that creativity trumps big budgets. Each side includes an alternate version for added depth and diversity.
