Welcome To Rave EP
Cat: TLRV 004. Rel: 08 Feb 24

Acid Mutant - "Disco Balls" (7:06)
P I N O Lopez - "Welcome To Rave" (7:07)
Vlado 303 - "Drug System" (6:53)
Acid Ray - "Winder" (7:16)
Review: From the title to the artwork, everything about this EP screams high energy and peak time dancefloor explosions. And so it proves when you drop the needle into the first groove. It is Acid Mutant who kicks off with 'Disco Balls' which has lacerating synths spraying about the mix over turbo charged beats. P.I.N.O. Lopez then keeps up the pressure with 'Welcome To Rave' with its squiggly acid lines and hurried, hard hitting drums. Flip it over for the high octane thrills of Vlado's 'Drug System' strap in for one last helter-skelter in the form of 'Winder' by Acid Ray.

Voiron - "Bon Kick Voiron" (3:40)
Voiron - "Digital Voiron Workstation" (4:30)
Voiron - "Sugar Voiron" (4:31)
Review: Some six years after debuting via a deliciously angular and energetic EP from Jaquarius and Mono-Enzyme 307, the Acid Avengers imprint notches up release number 20. Like most of the label's EPs, it's a multi-artist affair. Sometime Balkan Vinyl and Bass Assault artist Acidulant handles side A, bouncing between rushing, piano-sporting 1992 hardcore revivalism ('Super Rave'), sub-heavy deep electro haziness ('Save The Last Rave') and throbbing, arpeggio driven trance/breakbeat techno fusion ('Hauz Trax'). Voiron, who last graced the label back in 2016, takes over on the flip. The Paris-based producer first fuses glistening, spacey melodies, twisted acid lines, post-electro beats and dirty bass on 'Bon Kick Voiron', before opting for deep acid house on 'Digital Voiron Workstation' and atmospheric, Orbital-meets-'90s tech-house on 'Sugar Voiron'.

The Advent & Zein Ferreira - "Defend Your Planet" (4:41)
Assembler Code - "Line Of Sight" (5:19)
Carl Finlow - "Syncopated Automated" (6:57)
Versalife - "SH09" (6:02)
Review: This is a special sampler 12" taken from the Various Artists compilation Defend Your Planet that Avoidant Records put out. It features a heavyweight crew of electro mainstays, first of which are The Advent & Zein Ferreira. Their 'Defend Your Plane' is a turbo powered cosmic assault with skewed synths and high speed drums. Assembler Code's 'Line Of Sight' doesn't let up, powering on through sheet metal snares and juddering drum programming and then man like Carl Finlow layers in prickly melodies, dark sci-fi energy and booming bass. Analogue master Versalife shits things down with the shadowy 'SH09.'

Jamie Anderson & Owain K - "Aqua Dub" (7:36)
Francisco Aguado - "Balance" (7:19)
Star Dub - "Forst" (7:03)
Volpe - "Ever Growing" (6:13)
Review: OHM is quickly becoming a quality imprint you can count on for techno and dub techno. The ninth addition in the series, it calls for an excellent blend of composers to balance this EP out. Veteran Jamie Anderson collabs with the brilliant Owain K on opener. The 'Aqua Dub' builds a euphoria for late night smiles. Smooth is an understatement on this linear gem. One artist on here that's been making strong appearances on many dub techno labels is the ever-talented Francisco Aguado. 'Balance' is a great tribal transition track for any DJ who can it creatively to build the means to an end. On the second side, Star Dub offers the very addictive and techy 'Forst'. Ending on a high note, the brisk and flighty 'Ever Growing' by Volpe completes the ninth edition in a rapturous mood. If you like deep techno, the OHM series is a must to collect.

Review: Rotterdam's [R]3volution label returns this week with the third installment in their H3roes various artist series and this one is loaded with some heavy industrial goods directly off the factory floor. Highlights come from Dutch veteran Dimi Angeles who contributes the seething broken beat hypnotiser 'Myth Maker', Casual Treatment unleashes the intoxicating heads-down warehouse stomper 'Cold Hearted', Melbourne's Craig McWhinney aka Vohkinne goes full steam ahead on peak time cut 'Ritual Decay' and Muzmin goes into mental overdrive on the strobed-out 'Knee Dance'.

Aron - "Shift"
Distilled Noise - "Trenta"
Idana - "Sunday"
Vern - "Orizont"
Review: Italian label Micro Orbit takes its bow here in the form of a various artists' EP across a nice heavyweight 12". Aron opens up with 'Shift' which is a bubbly minimal house cut with aqueous synths and popping drums. Distilled Noise's 'Trenta' then layers up more silky synth sounds with underlapping bass waves lifting you off your feet. Idana ups the ante with more uptempo and quickened drums and bass loops that are detailed with gorgeously wispy melodies on 'Sunday' before Vern closes down with 'Orizont' which is the most sleek and tech-y cut of the lot. As far as first releases go, this is one that bodes well for the future.

Review: Talented Italian collective Aura Safari features well known Italian house producer Nicolas amongst other fine musicians. They have released a fine album on UK label Church but now head to their homeland's Hell Yeah for a debut EP full of magic. 'Lagos Connect' fuses afro drumming with house beats, lush synth work and glowing melodies to make for something beautifully grown up and musical as well as danceable. After the reprise and dub comes 'Morning Rivers,' a super slinky and seductive jazz-funk number with glowing, golden chords and subtle cosmic rays of light.

Velmondo - "Echo Welt" (5:24)
MLiR - "I'ts Baby Time" (5:14)
Luisille - "Une Longue Route" (4:52)
Review: New label Taf Kif kicks off with this classy VA package from some cool cats who know how to lay down a slick groove or two. First up on this distinctly 80s-styled package is Axel Boman, who brings some of his signature sparkling melodies to a synth-pop indebted jam entitled 'Oasis'. Meanwhile Velmondo follows up with something a little more trippy and adventurous on 'Echo Welt', before MLiR inaugurates the B-side with the sultry tones of 'It's Baby Time'. Lusille completes the set with the hazy Afro house deviations of 'Une Longue Route', riding a swung groove that offers something different from the everyday cookie cutter house we know so well.

Rheji Burrell - "Gimme Ya Luv" (6:07)
Review: Classic deep house movements from Stefan Braatz, Virgo Four and Rheji Burrell, coming through with the maximized, wally acid heat. 'Everyman Jack' on the A-side orders punters to shake, albeit whoever recorded the vocal sample is clearly so confident of their floor-command that they barely needed to do more than whisper. Burrell helms up two new ones on the B, meanwhile, with 'XTC' remaining soulful, autotuned and piano-phasey, and 'Gimme Ya Luv' leaning towards low-end-theoretic hip-house.

Part One here - pressed on yellow vinyl no less - scopes out the contributions from Cassara, Loz Goddard, Vinyl Addicted and Mystep. This 22-track extravaganza is noted to have been Fabric's most challenging licensing ordeal to date, having to polish a variety of sonic gemstones including by The Logic Box, Box Clever and Psychedelic Research Lab. Clearly, the relative obscurity of the names on the CD make this the duo's ode to 'hidden' house. Their original track 'Higher Elavation', meanwhile, cements this mysterious mood with surreptitious basses and smoggy pads.

Review: The latest entry in this series from the Dub Suty crew managed to nod to the roots of digital dub and dancehall while also very much looking to the future. It sees the label team up with a producer who lays down the beast while different vocalists step up to add their own twist to the sonics. Von D is the man on the buttons and he crafts a seriously weighty stepper that comes with horns, keys, guitars and of course some alluring bars. Reggae singers Chukki Starr, Chezidek, and Jah Mason all come correct with this positive, uplifting messages of unity.

Review: Mirko Hecktor and Tom Sprenger founded Terra Magica in 2021 as a platform for their brand of psychedelically-charged house and techno, and they've quickly built up a strong identity and a burgeoning community of likeminded astral travellers. Look no further than this quality split release for all the proof you need, as Lucas Croon threads Balearic, prog and trance together before the label bosses (Hektisch Sprengen DJs) weave some mystical mantras of their own and Dea revels in boxy Chicago jack crossed with Island boogie. It's an eclectic mix to be sure, with another three joints taking in uptempo proto-trance and anthemic emo-acid-breaks aplenty. Draw for the big feelings and get freaky in the process - what's not to love?

Toki Fuko - "9128" (6:51)

Review: MBMUSIC Ltd is a fledging label that serves up its first various artist release here. It is an enthralling five-tracker that opens up with the ocean-deep atmospheric techno of Daniel[i]'s 'Contemplate.' MBM then gets more busy with the percussive clatter of 'Crystalline' and Polygonia's aqueous dub techno roller 'Pearl Of Nian' is another unusual sound that draws you in deep. Toki Fuko's '9128' is more menacing and sounds like a deserted factory floor after all the staff have left and V?RYA's 'Dome' is a twitchy and restless broken beat excursion that has you looking over your shoulder.

This third edition of its Classic Sampler series is another joyous one that opens up with the jazzy loops and soul-drenched house grooves of Demuir's 'From Paris To Strasbourg'. Vincent Caira's 'Back Again' is more solid and raw but no less heartfelt then Mo'Funk & Roland Clark cut lose with an unabashed piano sound on 'Bring Together' that will get hands in the air. Review: DJ Trace's DSCI4 dropped the eight-track Spy Technologies X Sampler compilation last year, gathering together label classics, giving them a remaster and a digital release for the first time ever. Now this 12" cherry picks the strongest cuts and gets them back out there into the physical realm, focusing on Trace's own work and collaborations with his co-conspirators. The Concord Dawn remix of 'Mutationz' is a hyphy kick-off to the A-side before the dark n' deadly 'Move' link up with Ryme Tyme. Trace and Voyager turn up the pressure with the Reese attack of 'Sniper' and then it's Nico who joins the boss for a cooler, deadlier crusher called 'Replicants'.

Review: Milan-based minimal label Micro Orbit has been busy kicking off a range of various artist series' in recent times, with the first Pioneer and Voyager EPs now followed up by Vol 1 of the Origins Series. As ever it's a chance to get a spectrum of the label's musical interests under your belt, with Dragomir setting the tone perfectly with the crisp, tool-like hypnotism of 'Revision'. RQZ has a fuller sound underpinned by warm bass and peppered with sound design, but the script is still resoundingly stripped back on 'Panavision'. Romanian stalwart Vid occupies the first track on the B-side with the slinky groover 'Oceans' before Selidos closes proceedings in style with the shuffling, tripped-out 'Malina Fields'.

Review: This is the fourth compilation installment in Peace Symphonies' series that features multiple artists they are working with. Since starting up two years ago, this Moscow label is fast becoming one of the top avenues for house music in the country. DSF offers us 'Yes, Of Course' and 'Zorbas' for the A-side. The first one is a melodic builder that is equally beautiful as it is driving, giving us some soft trance vibes. The latter is a grooving techno jam that is spacey and ideal for stargazing on the dancefloor. For the second side, 'Ashwaganda' by Ventt & Keparys has a more tribal and African flavor to it. The EP closes out with the pair doing a fast-paced tech house gem in 'Saltwater', tinged with some superlative Balearic sounds.

Review: Detroit/Houston joint venture Kolour are back with another instalment in the Tale Of Two Cities series - and this is one serious all star cast if we've ever seen it! The creme de la creme of nu-disco appears here, starting with crazy Canadian Eddie C kicking off the A side with the sunny slo-mo antics of "All Time Freak", followed by the one and only Napoleon! Simon Mills throws down some more of his usual sexy and lo-slung grooves on "Over & Done". On the flip, current scene favourite - the Whiskey Disco boss Sleazy McQueen teams up with Vinyl Addicted on a seriously hot edit of an underground classic (to those that know) on "Hot To Trot" while Lyon's Patchworks hands in another similarly 'respectful edit' on the sultry late night blues of "Batracien". Review: Vinyl Junkie catapults a brand new label into the universe and his intention is loud and clear - Badass authentic jungle craftsmanship for the ages. He's rolling neck deep with kindred soldiers; Radiokillaz and Fleck get wild on the breaks on 'Lakes On Saturn', Riffz dusts off the detuned rave stabs for that aggy hardcore flavour while VJ himself whips up some delightful breakbeat switchery that melts into a dubwise breakdown for momentary respite. Radiokillaz close down the EP with a touch of soul on 'Time Again', a poignant space jazz joint laced with mournful strings and a yearning vocal. Meltdown.

Review: Dynamic Reflection remains a steadfast platform for 'proper' techno with something to say. Since 2008 they've been pushing artists to match dancefloor functionality with original ideas, and so the story continues on this latest VA release. Veritable legend Function steps up first with the tense, restrained arp odyssey of 'Give Thanks To The Sun', while label regular Viels jumps in next with the ironically titled tough-trucking workout 'Fragile'. Abstract Division kick off the B-side with the sizzling, rippling 'Convolution' (not to be confused with the Skudge track of the same name), and DOM completes the picture with a teasing, broken rhythm and psychoactive frequencies of the highest calibre.

Review: A label's first release is always a big one which hints at what to expect in the long term and for that reason Introspective debuts with this new five track compilation. They say that "Instinctive Senses is a compilation focusing on precise and cutting sonorities." We say it is a fresh techno offering with plenty of interesting details. Grafin drops 'Vespers' which is tightly looped and quick as hell then SDB & B2 get more dark, heavy and gritty on the twisted 'Reunite.' The flip side kick off with more rough and ready hard edged techno from Specific Objects, sleek tribal loops from Versus on 'Those Things' and Nano Rinnegato gets paranoid and revs up the sirens on 'Ghetto K.'

Review: Human Behind Pluto, johnfaustus and VSO all contuse to this new split red vinyl from Zodiak Communte. Human Behind Pluto goes first with a warp speed, electro-tinged techno track that has a knack-snapping beat and brilliantly mangled acid line. Johnfaustus's 'Red Sonjia' is dark and twisted electro from the underworld and VSO offers two sick jams: 'Sinking' is a bumping and coruscated bit of electro-crunk and 'Complacency' is a dense full flavour cosmic assault with fearless drum programming and plenty of suspenseful synths. Ionescu kicks off with 'Low Ride Her,' a balmy mix of lithe synths and cosmically minded pads that unfurl over fresh beats. Review: For a couple of years a decade or so ago Visionquest was a DJ collective and label that ruled the world. In the time since it has sunk back to the shadows, regrouped and come back as another vital force in the underground. This EP brings together a wealth of real talents not least the one and only synth wizard Mathew Jonson who opens up with the artful sounds of 'These Tears.' Cesar Merveille's 'Decennium' then gets wonky with tightly coiled minimal drums overlaid with pensive chords. On the flipside 'Wonder Wheel' gets a little more eerie and trippy with hunting keys leading you down a late-night maze and 'Dirty Pathways' from Vinyl Speed Adjust layering up the deft synths and airy rhythms.

Review: Drei Vinyl arrived with a bang earlier this year, firing off a 12" pointedly titled A New Beginning with four hi-octane slammers from the boisterous end of the techno spectrum. Now the label returns with an eagerly anticipated sophomore split-disc, The Essential Groove. Alexander Kowlaski opens the record up with the thunderous, nervy 'Breakpoint' before Thomas P. Heckmann whips out a fun and freaky throw down for peak time situations. On the B side Dejota Doblecero creates a motorik cacophony of rhythmic brilliance on 'Alta Frecuencia', Pergo creates an infectious strain of carnival techno and Vibrations Of Gravity jacks harder than anyone on the blistering 'I Think You Are Going To Like It'.

Label staple Felix Leifur serves up the slo-mo balearic bliss of 'Cohen Social Club', Moff & Tarkin get some emotive sunset breaks in effect on the mood music of 'Pure Fury' while Jonbjorn - on point as always - contributes the glassy-eyed electro cut 'We're Not Alone' and finally Viktor Birgiss delivers the deep and dubby afterhours cut 'Ad Handan'.

As well as his own originals he is a master of the remix and someone who can rework any cut to be even more potent not he floor. Review: 'Italo Disco Donna' compiles the efforts of the many female singers to contribute to the 80s Italo disco scene. Just six tracks across two sides of wax chart everything from romantic ballads to electropop experiments, from the honest and naive emotings of Luna & Black Connection's 'Flame' to the short-circuitted sonic circus that is Patrizia Pellegrino's 'Bandito'. Mondo Groove have once again reestablished themselves as among the best Italo pushers around, as this is a quality EP of truly original gems.

Review: James Mac and Vall have combined on this new deep house cut which leans heavily on a classic sample from some two decades ago. 'Try Again' is tense emotionally and physically with deep cut, well-defined grooves topped with the smooth vocal coos and rising synth tension. A Ben Miller 4am Afro dub then brings more skip and funk to the rhythms while Davi Penn keeps things tight and tech-y with his version. The Holseek remix is wired up with some twisted synth paranoia last of all is 'The Boy Is Mine' (feat Rosalie - Sasson remix) to close down this throwback EP.

Review: Venetian club and label Caposile are back in action with their fifth release of sleek and sophisticated minimal tech house following on from their excellent two-part The Sound Of Garden compilation series. This time around they're presenting the joint efforts of Maggio and Vitess, who pour considerable flair into their particular strain of 4/4 dancefloor delights. There's a strong melodic, synth-rich thread running through all these tracks, at times teetering towards the trance tech-house movement but retaining a little more house-spirited funk with some redolent disco influences on top. With a variety of keys to suit any emotional needs your set may have, this is another sure shot from one of the prime labels operating out of Venice.

Review: 'Stereo Love' marked the debut single of Romanian DJ Edward Maya and Moldovan-Romanian producer Vika Jigulina and it came back in 2009 on Maya's album, The Stereo Love Show. The catchy refrain is sampled from 'Bayatilar,' a 1989 track by Azerbaijani composer Eldar Mansurov and it helped the song swiftly gain global popularity and go on to rule nightclub playlists across Europe. It soared to the pinnacle of eleven national music charts and its success earned it certifications such as 8× Platinum in Norway, 7× Platinum in Sweden, and Gold or higher in ten other countries. Grab it now on vinyl and pump the party once more with this Euro-dance gem.

Musta's 'Loving Me' is up first in the form of a Hot Toddy remix that twists and turns on groovy synths and sensuous vocals. Olivian Nour sets the mood in compelling style with the subtle jazz guitar licks hovering over brooding twilight cut 'Collateral Damage', while Dorothy's Dream explores skittering, modulated forms on psychedelic workout 'Ten Colours'. Review: It's brave to call your label, and your new series, 'Tools,' but in the case of French label Chat Noir there is more than enough style to the tunes to elevate them above mere fodder. This various artist collection kicks off with Occibel's 'Opale' which is bathed in balmy pads with tight, clipped tech-funk drum work. Vitess then offers the heavy and heady synth panning of 'AB Road' which is a twitchy cosmic cut that operates at high speed and Sunaas slows things down to a funky downbeat workout on 'Off World.' There is 90s tech from Noiro and space breaks on Jo'Z's 'Analyzing' on the flip.

Okain - "Corner Boys"
Alex Dee - "Sundae"
Yakine - "U Dance"
Varoslav - "Dancing Like Ghost"
Review: Jetaime, staying true to our name, drop yet another large helping of sensual beats, with Volume 2 of our 'Love Session' series.

Today's lesson's in love, are provided by some of our closest friends and label regulars. Each delivering a scorchingly hot original, set to send you into sensory overload.

First up is Okain who, having brought us the incredible 'Acrobat' back in January, steps up again to reveal, what for us, is one of his finest works to date. 'Corner Boys' couldn't be more fitting for 'Love Session'. Its classic beats, sexy vocal sample and hip-grinding, oldschool bassline make it, ok not 'love', but most definitely, SEX!!

Alex steps up himself on track two, and brings us the deliciously sweet and creamy, 'Sundae'. Inventive and ever so tongue in cheek, Alex matches iconic hip-hop, with his modern Parisian beats, to create a perfect party anthem.

From the house-party, to the rave on track number three from, Varoslav. As its name suggests, 'Dancin' Like Ghosts' has a spooky and hypnotic feel. The constant pulse of delicate synths, pierced by hollow beats and piercing hats, together with its demonic vocal, make it a perfect number for those dark cellar gigs.

Finally, and rounding out the EP is Yakine, who delivers a fresh slab of Chicago-inspired house with 'U Dance'. Its killer B-Line, filtered Rhodes and spoken vocal, warms the heart as well as the feet, and make it the perfect track to round out the EP.

Overall a quite stunning collection of tracks, that we are extremely proud of. So come and join us, and get down to some serious lovin'!!

It remains a fertile scene, too, with several new artists and labels always coming through and the latest is Capybara which kicks off with this fresh new various artists EP. Sasha Pervukhin opens up with 'Oh No!' which brings jacked up drums and frazzled pads. Amadeo Savio then brings some nice acid mutations on 'Faces' and Varhat kicks off the flip with 'Alright' which is a loose, rickety house cut with balmy pads. The super strong Various Artists collection kicks off with the funky bass riffs of 'In Motion' from Phazed Groove, who ride the riffs and fluttering flute lines to the cosmos and back again. Ziggy Phunk gets more raw and punchy with a freewheeling disco house cut that will shake your booty loose and on the backside are two more timeless tracks: 'Funky Tranky' has lush trumpets reaching for the skies and 'Calabao' brings a real Latin vibe and flailing percussive energy.

Review: Unbelievably, Drumcode Records celebrates its 25th year in business in 2021. Adam Beyer's popular imprint has already delivered a swathe of must-check releases this year, and this collaborative outing from Pig & Dan and Victor Ruiz is another that label fans would do well to take note of. A-side 'Consciousness' is particularly potent, with the trio adding gnarly, mind-melting, dark room-ready riffs to a throbbing, trance-inducing techno groove. If tech-trance/neo-trance isn't your thing, turn to the flip. They're you'll find the moody and stomping big room techno of 'Music Takes You' - all doom-laden stabs and kick-drum driven heaviness - and the more melodious, colourful and rushing peak-time bliss of 'Silk', whose lengthy breakdowns are likely to send shivers down the spines of suitably refreshed dancers.

Review: Two And Half Records make the decision here to try and rid the A and B-side distinction on records that we are all very familiar with and instead they refer to each face of their latest 12" as 'dance' and 'listen.'' It makes sense frankly and is often how things go anyway. Swiss duo Quismi kick off this one with twitchy and narcotic tech house with an old school bent. French artist Groenogen then gets wild with bright melodies and grinding synths, r&b vocals and high speed tech funk on 'Twinkle Dance' while ILyes offers the tech silkiness of 'Starting Now.' On the flip is a trio of less direct, more experimental sounds that sure do offer plenty to get lost in on headphones.

Review: A new label fresh from Ukraine - Frequencies - gathers its forces for its first joint. For their debut V/A, four seasoned artists from around the country come together in the unity of sonic-national interest, pitting their skills behind the DAW side-by-side (nonetheless, these aren't mere bits to scratch your chin at). The deepchord-dubby 'Purkhavka' from Odesa native Rayo contrasts well with the snappier go-getter 'Mau Studio' from Vinaya, yielding an eclectic A-side from the jump. On the flip, the youngest of the bunch, Peshka, lays down 'Spozaranku', the acid-jammiest and most haunting track here, while ole' friend-of-the-label Dibe foments grittier and 2-steppier excitations with 'Exchange Pleasantries', which, despite its title, does just as well to transcend mere polite sonic formalisms.

Now he heads up a new VA 12" with 'Protoportal', a sinewy, seductive workout for those darker corners of the dance which originally came out in 2015 alongside tracks by Petter B. Review: NYC based Onysia Records recently launched its sister label Convent for dub that it deems to be more heavy and edgy. This seance release is just that. Scientist vs anyone is going to be worth hearing. Scientist vs J Gabriel is about as good as it gets as, since making his debut, Gabriel has blurred the boundaries between electronic dub, deep house, dub techno and minimal. Here he's in full-on dub mode, with Scientist handling mixing duties for extra authenticity and a typically spaced-out sound.
