Review: While not as celebrated as some of his Jamaican contemporaries, Winston Holness AKA Niney The Observer was a hugely successful record producer. This excellent two-disc set does an excellent job in rounding up the best of his output between 1973 and '75, a period where he enjoyed countless hits at home and over in the UK. There's naturally plenty of goodness to be found amongst the 49 tracks on show, with cuts featuring now well-known Jamaican scene stars - think Junior Delgado, Delroy Wilson, Big Youth, Max Romeo, Junior Byles, Horace Andy, U-Roy and ska survivor Tommy McCook - being joined by more dubbed-out 'versions' (credited to his studio band The Observers') and local hits by artists whose fame rarely spread beyond the Caribbean (Winston Wright, Hubert Lee, Earth & Stone). In an indispensable introduction to one of Jamaica's finest producers of the 1970s.

Review: Chicago jazz label International Anthem is serving up this superb new album from Carlos Nino & Friends on standard back wax but also as presented here on limited etheric pink vinyl. Whichever version you get though the music remains of unquestionably high standard. NiNo is a real musical shaman who calls his sound Energetic Space Music - a mix of star gazing jazz, lush broken beat, fresh funk and electronic goodness. It's the result of limitless improvisation with his friends and peers and is a record that will leave you spellbound,

My Love Is Getting Stronger (2:51)
Review: Clifford James Nobles originally hailed from Alabama, Georgia and brought with him to his music plenty of the characteristics of that southern state. It was in 1966 that he dropped his superb 'My Love Is Getting Stronger' on the first label, before Atlantic, J-V out of Philadelphia. It soon gained cult classic status in the Northern Soul world and so has become a hard-to-find and expensive little number. But now it arrives back on a fresh one-sided 7". Don't sleep on this life-enriching slice of soul.

Noise Engineering Univer Inter Chainable 8-Output MIDI To CV Converter & USB MIDI Interface Module (silver)
Cat: 955806 Rel: 10 Jul 23

Chainable 8-output MIDI to CV converter and USB MIDI interface module - 6HP.
Notes: Describing Univer Inter as merely a MIDI-to-CV module falls short of its immense potential. It serves as an all-encompassing MIDI-to-any-format converter, elegantly packed into a compact 6 HP unit. Connect to your gear via USB B or TRS MIDI, or use the included adapter to plug straight into those 5-pin DIN connecters we all know and love. Whether you're looking to map clock, note, CC, aftertouch or something else that MIDI can encode, UI can do it: we built in over 20 settings for each of the 8 outputs.

Want to control a pair of monophonic voices, complete with velocity and aftertouch? No problem. How about a polyphonic setup, with gate and pitch per voice? Easy. Need to synchronize an in-the-rack sequencer with your DAW or a MIDI clock? UI has you covered.

Eight outputs isn't enough, you say? Chain two UI together via their front-panel MIDI ports and a TRS cable for 16 - you read that right, 16 - configurable CV outputs from a single MIDI connection. The possibilities are endless.

Noise Engineering also made configuration simple via the front-panel USB connection and the easy-to-use Univer Inter section on the Noise Engineering Customer Portal. Go wild and set each channel to any output option you need, or just use one of our simple presets. Configuration files can also be saved as sysex files for easy backup and sharing.

Review: Steve Okonski is the leader of his eponymous Okonski trio and for his new album, he set time aside in the winter of 2020. His background is classical piano and for this one, he collaborated with Michael Isvara "Ish" Montgomery and Aaron Frazer with the aim of making a record driven by beats but entirely instrumental. Recording sessions were full of improv and spontaneity which comes out in the final cut with all its rich, triumphant yet pensive melodies and variation in tempo from calm late-night walks to more upbeat workouts.

Review: Almost three years after the well-received 'Orange Wine 'EP, and after three international tours, Okvsho is back with its fourth project, A Place Between Us. Georg and Christoph Kiss, the two brothers behind Okvsho, flaunt a project that is more intimate and bold than ever. Spanning the usual gamut of muted neo-soul, hip-hop, nu-jazz and all in between, the repertoire is expanded to even further limits, despite the laconic sonic demeanour; 'Soule' spans desert funk and jazz, and loosely signals the baile turn to follow with 'Pasitos Jaguari'. This second LP is the first full-length project to be released on the newly-founded Zurich-based label Current Moves, with which the Okvsho-brothers aim to shape the young European jazz scene they are inspired by.

Review: First released in 2020 as a CD compiling their best demos first submitted for Disney's short-lived hip-hop label, Hollywood BASIC, 'The Demos' (now on LP) is an ultra lo-fi look back on some of Organized Konfusion's best work. The Queens two-piece (made up of members Prince Po and Rawkus Records affiliate Pharoahe Monch) tended to focus their efforts on the harder-edged, warring and lyrical side of '90s hip-hop, thematically building their ideas on the hot topics of the day - such as industrial-prison complexes and mean streets. Masterful in its flows and delivery, tracks such as 'Mind Over Matter' bring a mood of severity mirroring Britcore, while jazzier cuts also poke through, such as 'Audience Pleasers'.

Do You Really Want To Rescue Me (instrumental) (2:31)
Review: Japanese gospel-funk-soul outfit Osaka Monaurail are on a determined mission to spread the word of the lord, usually through elaborate and funky orchestral collaborations. This time, on the single 'Do You Really Want To Rescue Me' (the counterpart to another single released at the same time, 'Whole Lot Of Lovin') they once more align themselves with James Brown, who wrote the song in the mid 1960s with Nat Jones and Elsie Mae. Once again, this is a collab with the uniquely expressive Casey Malone, whose unreal vocal talents are lent to the track more as an instrument than just a voice.

Review: Who knows what's in store when a new Osees record comes flying into earshot from John Dwyer's psych factory? The band that have made their reputation on their ability to shape shift from record to record are back with a strident blast of synth-drenched, hook laden songs with discernible beginnings, middles and ends. As a band who have been able to traverse labyrinthe psych corridors many a time, it's a forthright style which heralds this album, but not at the expense of the electric, bristling sound. With electronics and daggering riffs all locked into unison on short, sharp bullets of songwriting perfection, it's a fresh angle for the Osees, and unsurprisingly they've absolutely nailed it.

Review: When Osunlade first conceived and released Pyrography in 2011, it was meant to be the closing chapter of his house music journey. Of course, his attitude has changed since, but the album remains a fine statement from one of house music's most singular producers. This reissue from BBE puts the original set on vinyl for the first time, packaging it inside a brilliantly presented book featuring images, prayers, and information on the Yoruba culture that has long inspired the producer. Musically, the set expands on his usual spiritual house blueprint, fusing elements of jazz, broken beat and soul with influences as diverse as 80s talk box funk, hazy disco and 90s NY house. It remains one of Osunlade's finest works, so it's great to see it on wax at last.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Last year, someone set up an online petition calling for Warp to re-release The Other People Place's brilliant Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe album on wax. Happily, Warp has responded to the strength of feeling from electronica fans - most of whom bristled at the high online prices for second hand copies - and re-pressed it. Drexciya man James Stinson's 2001 solo set remains a timeless electronic classic; a perfectly pitched and immaculately produced fusion of downtempo electro rhythms, spacey electronics and twinkling synthesizer melodies. In fact, you'll struggle to find a better electro album full stop, making this reissue an essential purchase for anyone not lucky enough to own an original copy.

Review: .You don't need to hear much on The YumYum Tree to understand how apt the story behind Ozric Tentacles is. A troupe which formed from an impromptu six-hour jam session which took place around a campfire during the 1983 Stonehenge free festival, the band name itself came about when an audience member asked guitarist and keyboardist Ed Wynne what the group - which included his brother Roly, Nick 'Tig' Van Gelder (later of Jamiroquai note) and Joie Hinton - were called. Originally dropping from the cosmos in 2009, The YumYum Tree is archetypal stuff from the outfit in question. Complex guitar solos taking us into the stratosphere, uptempo, highly commanding, cacophonic arrangements, star-gazing, mood-setting, deeply textured space rock, and moments of pure new age bliss. A journey to musical unknowns, captained by progressive rock visionaries.

Review: French jazz quartet Parasite Jazz plays improvised music with a heavily effected, crazed bent, justifying their addition to the catalogue of Lyon's ultra-cool ephemera label Groovedge for their self-titled debut. Following up an initial cassette release, this oppressive, impressive masterwork now comes to obi-stripped vinyl via Disques De La Spirale. Said to have been fashioned out of many-a-trinket (drums, violin, springs, samples, reiterations, overdubs, trumpets, synths, distortions...) the likes of 'Damn Spring', 'Glissement De Terrain' and 'Alarm Twist' pay nods from every facet from dub to spiritual to impressionism, confounding and fascinating in equal measure.

Review: Here's something you don't come across that often: a "live" album that captures straight-to-tape (literally) studio recordings rather than a performance in front of the paying public. In Parcels defence, the results are impressive, in part because their chosen location, legendary Berlin institution Hansa Studios, boasts the kind of analogue recording and mixing equipment that neatly fits their warm, mixed-up trademark sound (think West Coast rock, blue-eyed soul, funk-ruck fusion). Many of the songs segue into each other as they would during a live performance, with new interludes and previously unheard songs adding a frisson of disco-fired dancefloor goodness to proceedings. It might not be a pure live album, but it's a hugely enjoyable listen.

Review: Don't be fooled by the name, Straatkunst is a French label but they're focused on street-ready electro and techno with a universal, global feel. Pechno steps up for the second release on the imprint with a pleasingly varied offering which kicks off with the pumped up 4/4 and reflective synth lines of 'Mobster'. 'No Time To Lose' is a rawer beatdown which lands somewhere in between OG Chicago house and slamming West Coast electro. 'Dove' is a deeper, tripper affair while 'Titre Eponyme' opts for a stripped back vibe which takes its cues from Nu Groove and the early wave of bleep techno.
