New releases last four weeks: All genres

Review: These two powerhouses of pioneering dub meet up for the second time on this fantastic reissue by Burning Sounds originally released in 1978. The mostly instrumental album shows the duo helping to define the dub sound for the next generation of producers. Thanks to the inspirations and usage of Studio One, the sound is quintessential dub, like in the 'Garvey Dub' and title song 'Guerilla Dub'. They've not fully abandoned the traditional roots as you can hear in 'Malcolm X Dub' and 'Martin Luther Dub' though, turning them into more of remixes than original tracks. This album is a must for any 70s and 80s dub afficionado.

Review: RFXN kicks off life with a new single from David Agrella which has seen early support from Ricardo Villalobos. First off he offers up his own Acid Mix of 'Perro Balearico' and it's a supple, deep and dubby track with liquid synths and prog chords that sound both retro and future all at once. The original is a more dreamy and spaced-out sound for 5 am sessions. On the flip is a more punch but still silky and warmly melodic remix from Mario Liberti before last of all, Gabriel Rai gets darker. His drums hit harder and the synths are moodier as he takes dancers down a late-night path of mystery and intrigue.

Review: Air Formation are Brighton-based shoegazers who are back now with their sixth album, a self-titled record on Club AC30, that is inspired by their love of pioneering bands like Flying Saucer Attack, Spiritualized and The Jesus & Mary Chain. It is a collection of tracks drenched in droning keys, heavy feedback, delayed guitar loops and heavenly vocals that float up top above the noise. It takes in the likes of the blissful opener 'Pressure Drop', the sweeping crescendos of 'Only So Much Light', shimmering and swirling melodies on 'I Don't Want To Talk' and 'Crashing Out' and plenty more.

Review: Contemporary jazz talent Melissa Aldana is back on the legendary BlueNote label with her second album here. Echoes Of The Inner Prophet is, says the great label, "a musical voyage to explore the depth of the spiritual journey" and has been co-produced by Aldana and Lage Lund. The tenor saxophonist is joined three by the talented Lund on guitar, as well as piano from Fabian Almazan, Kush Abadey on drums and Pablo Menares on bass. The eight-track work is a mix of some all-new original compositions that "seek profound truths through introspection, intuition, and self-reflection" and chief amongst them is an opening track dedicated to the great Wayne Shorter.

Review: Alkemy's Come On EP, released on Mondo Groove from Italy, delivers a captivating blend of deep house with influences of Balearic and Italo house. Side-1 features the original version boasting a mid-tempo groove with a nostalgic 90s vibe and rich melodies. In contrast, the DJ Ralf remix injects a more upbeat and techno-infused energy, offering a futuristic twist to the original track. On Side-2, 'Cloud' presents a melodic and deeper journey into the realms of deep house, maintaining a danceable rhythm while delving into more introspective sonic territories. Meanwhile the GNMR Reworked version takes a leap into the future with its proto-techno sound and deep synth vibes, offering a refreshing and unique perspective .Alkemy's Come On EP demonstrates the artist's versatility and innovation within the deep house genre, providing listeners with four examples of quality dance music.

Review: Parallel is the fourth EP by Altinbas on his own label, Observer Station. The beats are pounding and rough for those strong advocates who like their techno tough. The gold in 'Tide' is found in the ever-changing percussion elements that propel it to addiction. For the second side, 'MT15' keeps things moving, employing key rave claps and a nice ride to the support the pulsating driver. Lastly, the title track takes some edge of tension with a great balance of melody over the mechanical loop. Hats off to Altinbas for taking the 90s warehouse techno sound and updating it while still paying homage to it.

Review: Nestor Alvarez's Midnight in Havana on Original Gravity delivers an electrifying Afro-Cuban instrumental jam that transports listeners to the vibrant streets of Havana. With a mesmerising flute lead and dynamic jam sessions, the track exudes a captivating energy that feels like a theme song for the city's bustling nightlife. The infusion of Cuban soul adds depth and authenticity to the music, immersing listeners in its rich cultural heritage. On the B-side, Alvarez offers a creative cover version of the Happy Mondays' 'Kinky Afro,' reimagined with a Cuban twist. The fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms and the iconic melody of the original song results in a fresh and exciting interpretation that showcases Alvarez's versatility as a musician. Fans of Latin and Cuban dance music are sure to eat this up.

Review: Ghosted 2, produced by Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werlin, presents a fascinating fusion of various genres - Electronic, Jazz, Folk, World, and Country. However, it's not the amalgamation of styles that captivates but the abstract, experimental nature of their endeavor. This record leans into the boundaries of free improvisation, with a heavy emphasis on texture and atmosphere. The instrumentation is minimal, with delicate drumming that weaves through the soundscape while subtle guitar strums and drones create a hazy, hypnotic ambiance. What sets this apart is its exploration of silence. Long stretches of negative space linger, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the subtle nuances and intricacies of the performance. The result is an album that is as challenging as it is rewarding, inviting multiple listens to unravel its sonic secrets.

Review: Amirtha Kidambi's New Monuments is a politically charged fusion of avant-jazz, Carnatic music, and rock that confronts colonialism and oppression. Its dark, psychedelic soundscapes express urgent determination through Kidambi's evocative vocals and the experimental instrumentation of her collective, the Elder Ones. Kidambi weaves personal experiences as an Asian American into her critique of global injustices, using her music as a platform for resistance. Through diverse vocal styles and instrumentation, she highlights the interconnectedness of struggles against oppression. Its grim determination underscores the resilience of the downtrodden, their march toward a future where their voices and rights are recognized.

Review: Was anyone ready for one of the most talked-about albums of the year to be Andre 3000 going ham on the flute? Probably not, but in a post-reality world New Blue Sun just slots right in. Of course the legions of Outkast fans are going to be split when an artist of such prominence takes a wild swerve into experimental musical pastures, but for those with an open mind or a pre-existing appreciation of ambient and leftfield music, this album is an easy sell. Teasing the tension between acoustic and electronic, ancient and hypermodern, grounded and ethereal, Andre has been bold and honest in presenting this album to the world and his gamble has paid off.

Review: Romanian electro agent Andrew Red Hand has been spotted delivering the heat to respected outposts like M>O>S, Detroit Underground and Chiwax, and now he's setting off with Rotterdam Electronix for a night drive through future cityscapes. It's electro through and through, driven by snappy 808 beats and analogue monosynths, but there's something particularly charming about the minimal wave quality to Red Hand's sound. That contrasts with The Exaltics, who delivers a gutsy re-version of 'In The Cemetery' which will keep you up at night for all the right reasons.

Review: Dimi Angelis makes a fine statement with his 13th release via the ANGLS label and it is packed with raw, authentic beats across four robust tracks that are destined to captivate dancefloors. The A-side features 'Shadowland' which immediately ensnares listeners with its lasso-like loops and spatial nuances. Meanwhile, 'Intergalactic' ignites the dancefloor with its mechanical noise assault and superbly uses the 909 to build suspense with punchy rhythms. Flipping to the B-side, 'Crionics' plunges you into a deep sonic abyss where tension abounds and finally 'Ice Warrior' concludes the journey with abstract yet fulfilling frequencies. Dimi Angelis returns with his distinctive sound, primed to electrify floors from basements to warehouses once more.
