  1. Boogie Land (Mr K Tribute To Larryl edit) (8:18)
  2. Lady, Lady, Lady (Mr K instrumental edit) (6:35)
Review: Supreme edits from the one and only Mr K: "Boogie Land" explores the insane p-funk gold of Ike Strong with full emphasis on the obese walking bassline, gutsy backing vocals and layered riffs, all extended with hypnotic glory. "Lady, Lady, Lady" is a dramatic rearrangement of the instrumental version of Boogie Man Orchestra where the pianos and strings are placed centre stage and squeezed for every ounce of drama and disco theatre. Insanely good.

Review: When the first Mugwisa International Xylophone Group EP dropped earlier in the year, there was naturally much interest. Whereas that contained tracks produced by European electronic producers based on rare recordings of the distinctive Ugandan group, this follow-up presents the recordings in their entirety. Based around the 32-note homemade "Embaire Xylophone" (designed and used in a handful of villages) with the additional of local percussion, stringed instruments and chanted vocals, the four original tracks showcased here are genuinely unique and should make an impression on even the most jaded of listeners. The Diabolical Liberties handle remix duties, turning in vocal and instrumental versions of "Spirit" that thrillingly fuse elements of the 12-strong group's original recordings with sharp rave stabs, and sweaty drum machine hits.

  1. Affirmation (7:21)
  2. Aglio E Olio (5:56)
  3. Aglio E Olio (Laurence Guy remix) (7:30)
  4. Big Plate Chicken (5:43)
Review: Alistair Gibbs takes time out from churning out dancefloor gold on his Friends & Relations imprint to make a welcome return to Heist Recordings. Predictably, he's in fine fettle throughout. Opener "Affirmation" is an almost overwhelmingly positive chunk of loose and baggy disco house that's similar in feel - if not sound - to Tom Trago classic "Use Me Again". "Agilo E Olio", on the other hand, is a much more driving and low-slung affair, with key wickedly rubbery bass, cowbell-heavy percussion and fuzzy Clavinet lines providing heaps of dancefloor energy. Laurence Guy gives that track a warm, woozy and dreamy deep house makeover, before Nebraska rounds things off via the jaunty dub-house-meets-Maurice Fulton brilliance of EP standout "Big Plate Chicken".

Drum And Bass
  1. Division (6:46)
  2. Tell Me The Truth (Gremlinz remix) (5:47)
Review: No one does it like Nucleus & Paradox. They dig deeper than you. They sculpt better samples than you. They're more prolific than you and they're way more b-boy than you. But that's why we love them, right? Here they're treating us to something a little different; side A is all about a jazzy new number from them "Division", which sooths with a little more funk than you'd usually expect from the but sounds all the fresher for it. Then on the flip we have Gremlinz taking us back to 2004 with an incredible re-up of the duo's 13 year old classic "Tell Me The Truth". Bonafide.

Loose Beat (1-sided etched 12" reeditado)
Cat: YSD 84. Rel: 20 Nov 17
Deep House
  1. Loose Beat (7:25)
Review: Oliver Dollar - real name Oliver Siebert - has always been open to the idea of collaboration, with previous EPs variously featuring hook-ups with Jesse Rose, Jimi Jules and Chuck Daniels, amongst others. For "Loose Boat", a single-sided missive on Osunlade's Yoruba Soul Records imprint, the Berlin-based producer has joined forces with Crazy P main men Jim Barron and Chris Todd. Seemingly built around delay-laden samples from an old Marvin Gaye cut (but don't quote us on that), the track rolls along on a rich bassline and handclap-driven beats, with dreamy pads and impeccable electric piano solos only adding to the groovy, sun-baked feel.

Techno
  1. Unruly (5:13)
  2. Garys (5:42)
  3. Lost Hours
Review: Sam Smith aka Ploy is making some of the hottest techno around at the moment and, no, the dude ain't German. Bristol-schooled and full of bass dread, Ploy's tunes have taken him from Timedance to Hessle Audio, and now onto the ever-impressive Hemlock Recordings. "Unruly" dominates the A-side with its fat, inter-galactic groove filled to the brim with hollow noise and complex percussion folds, all blowing up to a stop-start rhythm; on the flipside "Garys" chucks out another dense groove of tooled-up techno wizardry, banging and dubbed-out for maximum club tear-out, whereas "Lost Hours" lingers in outer space thanks to a beatless sway made up of kinetic bleeps and aqueous sonic shapes. Killer!

Review: What can be said about this CLASSIC slab from Steve Poindexter that hasn't been stated already? Cited by many as one of the most influential Chicago trax there ever was, especially those within Techno circles unsurprisingly, "Computer Madness" set the stage for a new wave of demented club tracks along them like the Gherkin Jerks n aw that. You know the script by now. Originally released on Muzique in 89, and licensed for reissue on the resurrected Dance Mania in 2013, you don't want to miss out on this timely repress of the classic Work That Mutha 12" !

Review: Four spry blends of vibrant contemporary bass fusion from Potentz. Mixing up dubstep, grime, trap, wave and UKG, the flavours are strong throughout; "Summerjam" flutters with shimmering chimes and manipulated vocal textures, "Shadows" thugs it out over a wavey backdrop, "June 84" is a dream steam roller with swooping, Kareful-style arpeggios while "Starlight" takes the message back to the bedroom with a deep rolling groove and emotion dripping from the sultry synth lines.

Cat: RED 001. Rel: 20 Nov 17
Bass
  1. At Last (4:58)
  2. Tracer (6:29)
  3. We Can All Groove (7:46)
Review: New label Radstone Press comes not from the decaying post-industrial cities of the North, or even bass music's spiritual home of London, but rather the wild and windy Highlands of Scotland. This is particularly surprising given the ballsy, warehouse-friendly sounds of this debut 12" by up-and-coming producer Pseudopolis. A-side "At Last" is a deliciously heavy broken garage assault that flits between dreamy, synth-heavy, saucer-eyed breakdowns and rumbling, sub-heavy percussive sections. Over on side B, "Tracer" brilliant combines scattergun drum hits, bombastic sub-bass and trippy late night riffs, while "We Can All Groove" fixes the ghostly electronics and dub-influenced percussion hits of early bleep techno with the hazy, head-nodding bump of vintage dub house.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Sahau - "As It Was" (15:57)
  2. AK41 - "The Man Who Wasn't There" (12:25)
Review: Romanian imprint Zimbru could hardly be described as prolific. In fact, this 12" is the label's third outing in three years. Fittingly, it features a track each from the two artists who graced their first two EPs. Sahau handles the A-side, laying down an undeniably epic, late night excursion that sits somewhere between the distinctive minimal techno swing of Ricardo Villalobos and spacey, ultra-deep house. Like the best Villalobos productions, it subtly ebbs and flows for 16 mesmerizing minutes. Over on the flipside Dan Andrei and Seban Goanta once again join forces as AK41, celebrating "The Man Who Wasn't There" via twittering birdsong, deep and rolling bass, ricocheting electronic riffs and impressively programmed percussion.

Review: For over a decade, Eklo head honcho has released on some of the most esteemed minimal house labels such as Minibar, Freak 'N' Chic and Circus Company, in addition to his side project Hold Youth with Le Loup. The Parisian producer has been part of a growing shift in the scene of late, moving from quirky and reductionist micro-house sounds towards classic Detroit aesthetics: and it's these fanciful recreations of classic Detroit sounds on the Acid La Cour EP. Beginning with the Motor City first wave influenced "Sorbet Tamarin", he's then into some deep and dusty 303 business (more suited to the after hours) on "Acid Miami & Les Tantines La Roue". On the flip, the sliver Roland box makes a return on the sublime techno-soul experiment "La Chanson De Gran Mer Kal" reminiscent of early Kenny Larkin or Dan Curtin. Finally on the frantic "Kiltire Beat" we get served to a truly authentic recreation of late '80s hi-tech soul: and it's one hell of a flashback. Tip!
