Review: Joe Armon-Jones has been a driving force in the resurgence of contemporary jazz and now makes something of a victory lap with this new album on the always essential Brownswood. It's a very modern mix of bass and dub, du jour club culture and his own jazz styles featuring peers like Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia. Frankly, the whole record is silky, starry-eyed and sublime and the excellent artwork also hist at the cosmic subtleties of this album, but our picks of the bunch are the neo-soul, summery stroll through the park vibes of "Yellow Dandelion", "Gnawa Sweet" which glows with mellifluous Rhodes chords and the uncompromising yet accessible sax and big brass action of album highlight "You Didn't Care".

Review: Fittingly, the latest compilation from Defected's phenomenally successful disco offshoot, Glitterbox, has been mixed by the man who has been making their Ibiza parties move for the last few years, Melvo Baptiste. Over the course of three hugely entertaining discs, Baptiste effortlessly joins the dots between original '70s and '80s disco and boogie, modern nu-disco hits, disco house and the kind of soulful and groovy 21st century cuts that fit somewhere in between. As you'd expect from an experienced and inventive DJ, Baptiste also showcases his love of overlaying familiar vocal acappellas, while the highlight-heavy tracklist contains a superb blend of classics, lesser-known hits and up-front future hits.

Review: When you think of the way we were when Blink 182's angsty punk-pop was tapping the top of the charts one word comes to mind - innocence. Compared to this era of impending existential doom it was easier to work out solutions then, even if solutions weren't put into action. So welcome to the new age, and a new Blink 182 intent on carving a fresh place for themselves in this frighteningly complex point in history. It's as though 2016's "California" was a cathartic and temporary rekindling of old flames, giving closure and helping the band move forward properly. Here they take us into territories barely on their radar before. Not that opener "The First Time" doesn't nod to past glories. "Darkside" brings arty, experimental punk, "Heaven" is a main stage overture, "On Some Emo Shit" is a desperate call for help and admission of the universality of fragility.

Review: Recorded in 1983 and '84 respectively, "Feelings" and "Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters" were the last albums recorded by Sidiku Buari, a New York based musician who turned to music after a promising career as an athlete in his native Ghana. He initially rose to prominence making highlife and afro-disco, but by the early '80s Sidiku was in full-on Afro-boogie and electrofunk mode, offering up tracks rich in colourful synthesizer lines, punchy electronic drums and righteous vocals in his native tongue. There's much to set the pulse racing across both slabs of wax, from the squelchy, club-ready brilliance of "Music" and "Anokwar (Truth)", to the slap bass propelled flex of "Minsumobo", dub disco grooves of "Karambani" and flute-laden breeziness of "Rhythm Of Africa".

Review: Saxophonist and keyboardist Jorja Chalmers has accomplished much over the course of her career - she's toured and recorded extensively with Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music - but debut album "Human Again" marks the first time she's stood centre stage as a solo artist. She has all the ingredients to succeed on her own, though: a bold look, a supportive label in Italians Do It Better and a signature style that's in turns creepy, claustrophobic, cinematic, atmospheric and seductive. More importantly, "Human Again" is superb, offering a synthesizer-powered mix of dark ambient instrumentals, David Lynch style soundtrack pieces, drowsy and clandestine sounding songs and cuts that wrap her distinctive saxophone solos around the most evocative of electronic soundscapes.

Review: Talk to anyone about Stranger Things and it will only be a matter of minutes before the sensational soundtrack is mentioned. The future retro synths of Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein have a huge impact on deepening the occult feelings you experience when watching the show and that continued through Series 3. Now you can grab the accompanying tracks on this mysterious CD, which features the vulnerable "You're A Fighter", celebratory 80s synth pop stomps of "Starcourt" and meditative charms of "The Ceiling Is Beautiful" amongst other nuggets of gold. The producers themselves have said this is less a score and more a series of cues, and it certainly got us thinking.

Review: DJ Muggs links with New Jersey rapper Crimeapple for a new album of hardcore east coast rap and hip hop that proves why he is still so big in the game more than 35 years after he first emerged. In that time he's been a key part of Cypress Hill's most successful years, launched his much loved Vs. series and keeps on turning out hot beats. Crimeapple is the latest in a long line of choice collaborators, and one who drops his Colombian heritage into bilingual verses while hard hitting beats and dark soul production prickle around him. This is hard hitting and vital work from both.

Review: Liam Gallagher is many things to many people, and one thing to everyone - authentic. It seems unthinkable we could question the indie roller's motives, or expect anything other than the "meat and veg rock" he described his own work as during a 2018 interview with The Guardian. "Why Me? Why Not" sees him take that mantra to new heights. As an album it's as accomplished and polished as anything this pied piper of the raw and unpolished has gifted us in the years after *that band*, making for an immediately engaging collection of anthems-in-the-making that will have crowds eating out of the palm of his hand as if they'd never seen his hand before, or tasted any of the food he's been feeding them for years now. And therein lies the reason it remains impossible to criticise this undeniably upfront British songwriter. Enough said.

  1. Preservation
Review: Since she burst on to the experimental music scene three years ago, percussionist, composer and sound designer Sarah Hennies has proved particularly adept at creating conceptual pieces that are more accessible and breathtakingly beautiful than similar exercises devised by her peers. "Reservoir 1: Reservation", is a fantastic example. Apparently part of a trilogy based on "the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind", the piece sees Hennies and her fellow Meridian collective members take turns to deliver unique percussive sounds and textures to the accompaniment of Phillip Bush's mesmerizing piano motifs. It's undeniably minimalist in its approach, but utterly beguiling: a beautiful work that may one day be spoken of in hushed tones.

Review: Apparently inspired by 1980s computer game soundtracks and the synth-heavy scores to fantasy films, M83's "DSVII" is slated as a sequel to the band's 2007 set "Digital Shades". If so, it's a rather belated one, especially considering the French outfit has released three studio sets and a swathe of soundtracks since then. Regardless, the material here is deliciously evocative, emotion-rich and atmospheric, mirroring the ebb and flow (and peaks and troughs) associated with soundtracks whilst relying entirely on i80s-sounding synthesizers and drum machine hits. It's basically synth-wave, with Symmetry's "Themes From An Imaginary Film" - itself based on music initially intended for the "Drive" soundtrack - being an obvious comparison.

Review: Ilan Pdahtzur is as obsessive a record digger as any of his more visible peers. His particular niche is early to mid-eighties club music, and now he gets a platform to show off his skills thanks to the Spacetalk label. "Night City Life" is about music to match that exact setting - nocturnal urban metropolises with glowing neon lights shimmering in the darkness. There's a lot to love across four sides of vinyl here, from Italo disco to steamy boogie cuts and iridescent synth jams. It will make you nostalgic for a time and place you've never experienced (at least not as perfectly as this) and no doubt get plenty of dance floors on their feet.

Review: Who remembers Joel Wastberg aka sir Was' 2017 LP, "Digging A Tunnel"? It was one of those albums that achieved cult status not just because of its star's unarguable talent, but its means of production. Recorded close enough to a train line to feel the locomotives shaking the studio itself, it had to be loud, daring and striking to drown out the passing carriages. "Holding On To A Dream" is an altogether quieter affair because the two years between then and now have afforded our man luxuries like a real place to refine his wares. And refine them he has. "No Giving Up" is smooth pop perfection. "The Sun Will Shine" takes us closer to soul, while "Deployed" emphasises electronics to create something closer to early-MGMT's intimate moments than MGMT seem capable of these days - Little "does-no-wrong" Dragon's guest appearance accentuating the notion that this is exquisitely crafted stuff, and far from by numbers.

Curated by label head and Ibiza party king Sven Vath, this year's edition is a comparatively deep and melodic affair. A big shout goes to Talaboman for their excellently entitled "Big Room Anthemic Groovy Pounding Trance Dub Bomb Superb!" which is indeed a big room anthemic groovy pounding trance dub bomb, while Edward serves up a more twisted roller (the excellent "End Days"), Raxon goes deep with "The Turbulent" and Mark Broom hammers home with tripped out sci-fi banger "Jaded", amongst many other gems.

Review: Picture the scene: it's the late 60s, reggae is swiftly evolving into rocksteady as a new wave of artists bring fresh influences to their sounds. Most of them are recorded, pressed and sold on Orange Street in Kingston, Jamaica, which was the epicentre of the reggae world at the time. Famous plugger Bunny Lee was the man who made hits of many of the tunes and this new compilation pulls together fourteen (and three bonus) highlights of the era. Crackling rhythms, skilled musicianship and stories of daily lives characterise this most colourful and transportive of collections which will leave you feeling nicely detached from the hustle and bustle of fast paced modern life.

Review: It's been two frustratingly long years since Color Tapes last took a deep dive into their obscure (but hugely impressive) early-to-mid 1980s catalogue. This fifth volume in the "Cold Waves Of Color" compilation series is therefore long overdue. As usual, what you get is a fine mix of atmospheric and ear-catching electronic music encompassing cold wave, new wave, post-punk electro and hard-to-pigeonhole synthesizer soundscapes. Highlights are plentiful from start to finish, with our picks including the deep space electro of Berserk In A Hayfield's "Berserk", the drowsy experimental weirdness of The Lord's "Production Line", the throbbing, otherworldly brilliance of Echophase's "Continental Drift" and the dark and gothic post-punk pop of Lives Of Angels' "Pavilion".

Review: We've long thought that Austrian artist Wolfram Eckert is destined for greatness - or, to be more specific, crossover success - but to date his authentically produced but often tongue-in-cheek take on Euro-pop has yet to catch on with the public. "Amadeus", his long awaited second album, has all the ingredients to be a massive hit. Rich in bold synthesizer motifs, knowing nods to classic new wave and Euro-disco hits, atmospheric electronics, on-point grooves (we can hear nods to Italo-disco, Hi-NRG, acid house and the Pet Shop Boys) and high profile collaborations (Egyptian Lover, Haddaway, Peaches and, bizarrely, Pamela Anderson all appear), it's an album that brilliantly combines a mature synthesizer sound with the catchy hooks and giddy rush of the best pop music.
