Time Square (reissue)
  1. Time Square (part 1) (22:09)
  2. Time Square (part 2) (15:22)
Review: Can Oral and Ingmar Koch's Global Electronic Network is described as a "German lo-fi electronic act using second-hand drum machines and broken keyboards". The duo were among the very best house and techno producers who came from a more acoustic background, and their 1994 debut EP, Time Square, has been in our sights for just about the same amount of time. In fact, it's perfect timing for these two voyages two be released again, with "Time Square (part 1)" sounding as deep, rich and explorative as any of the deep-minded techno being made by contemporary producers - more than anything, this thing sounds like it's at the cutting edge of music. The second part, "Time Square (part 2)", is even deeper and more cavernous, totally exploring the inner depths of rhythm, and forming another intricate groove made of glitchy synths. What a stunning reissue - cop it before it's too late!

Rushing EP (12" limited to 200 copies)

  2. Rushing (3:20)
  3. Stalagmites & Helictites (2:52)
  4. Sun (5:29)
  5. There Is A Space In Between (4:55)
Review: Based in Bristol, UK, experimental musician and vocalist Lucy Gooch is certainly a name to keep an eye on right now. While boasting little by way of discography, this being her debut EP which follows the self released 2018 record, 'Sun', she has all the hallmarks of an established synth-y siren. You heard it here first (possibly). Compris-ing five sumptuous tracks that are pared back but, upon closer inspection, incredibly deep and immersive, elements of Bjork and Imogen Heap are audible in the songs here. Warm notes, sensitive, ethereal vocals and a sense of real passion behind the work itself. The likes of 'Rushing' comes close to a sombre choral mood at times, 'There Is A Space In Between' could stand with the best ambient work, while 'Stalag-mites & Helictites' is a hypnotic journey into the inner mind. Or somewhere near.

  2. Tall (8:52)

  4. Elljus (5:25)
  5. Inland (5:51)
Review: There's much to enjoy about the output of the Kimochi label, not least the bespoke, spray-painted sleeves and their habit of releasing only the deepest, most hypnotic electronic music. Their latest must-have release is another super-limited affair that drifts lazily between ultra-deep cuts shot through with dub-wise rhythms, atmospheric shoegaze motifs, echoing ambient chords and beats straight out of the early '90s ambient techno playbook. It's utterly gorgeous and deliciously hazy, with slow-burn melodies and undulating electronics slowly rising above reverb-laden chords, warm basslines and occasionally skittish rhythms. There's something particularly special about the locked-in drums and hypnotic bassline of "Elljus", but the ambient soundscapes "Heden" and "Inland" are also superb.

Sine Phase
Sine Phase (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GRA 011. Rel: 21 Jan 19
  1. Sine Phase
  2. Islands
Review: In the new year things are only getting freakier for the Gravity Graffiti camp as label core member Riccardo Schiro takes the reins once again. "Sine Phase," as the title might well imply, is a focused trip into rhythmic synth modulation with a techno pulse and drippy effects processing guaranteed to soak into your cerebellum. "Islands" charges further into experimental terrain, ditching any semblance of a beat in favour of free-wheeling texture and tone that sounds as though it was wrenched from a particularly fruitful experimental session. As the plot thickens for this ever-intriguing label, our advice is to strap in for the long haul experience.

  1. Corner Song (4:50)
  2. The Flying Man (4:23)
  3. Corner Song (Jex Opolis remix) (7:58)
Review: Both "Corner Song" and "The Flying Man" were first featured on Tempelhof and Gigi Masin's second collaborative album, 2016's arguably overlooked album Tsuki. Both are naturally worthy of a single release, though, as they deserve wider recognition. Both are quietly beautiful, drowsy and hazily picturesque, with gently percussive opener "Corner Song" just edging out the beat-less brilliance of "The Flying Man" - in which Masin delivers a weary and heart-aching vocal - in the "best track" stakes. On the flip you'll find a radical re-interpretation of "Corner Song" by New York producer Jex Opolis, who wraps Tempelhof and Masin's glistening guitars around a wonderfully colourful and tactile Balearic boogie groove.

Review: The latest missive from ROHS! offshoot Lontano Series is a first label appearance, and second album in total, from Roberto Galati and Federico Mosconi's collaborative Galatimosconi project. According to the label, Dissolve's six-track suite was recorded as a "stream of consciousness" during a few productive days in the studio. Musically, it's impressively hazy, spaced-out and blissful, with the Italian duo adding a range of attractive, echoing sounds - think gentle guitar passages, slow-burning electronic melodies, picturesque harp sounds and becalmed ambient chords - to densely layered audio collage of droning tones, heavily processed electronics, field recordings and effects-laden noises. It's undoubtedly beautiful, but also surprisingly loud and intense thanks to the copious amounts of delay and reverb involved.

Review: On the back of Kompakt's expansive retrospective of his work under the Gas alias, the essential Box, Wolfgang Voigt has decided to deliver a new album - his first for 17 years. Predictably, Narkopop is as cinematic, widescreen and densely layered as anything the German ambient producer has done to date. Over 11 spellbinding tracks, Voigt blends field recordings and droning electronics with sweeping, almost orchestral movements, swirling melodic cycles, and occasional forays into rhythmic hypnotism. The result is a collection of "wall of sound" ambient compositions that does a terrific job tiptoeing the fine lines between both grandiosity and intimacy, and joy and pain. In a word: essential.

Review: Having distinguished themselves with a series of superb retrospective releases highlighting the work of Leon Lowman, Gigi Masin and Joan Biblioni, Amsterdam label Music From Memory deviate from the path somewhat with his long overdue Gaussian Curve album. Ask yourself what would happen when a elderly Venetian who specialises in sublime ambient music spends a weekend holed up in a Redlight district studio with two of his biggest, most musically gifted fans. The superb Clouds is the answer, with 'Young' Marco Sterk and Jonny Nash following Masin's lead on an eight track exercise in sumptuous, calming composition. The wait has truly been worth it.

Review: Vladimir Ivkovic's Offen remains one of Europe's finest, broadest and least predictable electronic imprints, with the only real guarantee being that output will be interesting, weird and unarguably innovative. The latest from Gains't Nait, made with electronic near-deity Robin Rimbaud under his Scanner moniker (see also Githead), is another case in point.

Depth is the crucial factor - tracks feel dense enough to get lost in, catching listeners in a time-space warp, where there's as much to make us consider the future, and the great unknown, as the past. The familiarity of distant, building, looped brass stabs on 'OB'. The melancholic, cinematic cut scene pianos of '63'. All share their space with distortions, processing sounds, white noise and discordant ambience, to dazzling effect. Like the loose, intermittent breaks of 'Slo', and its spirals of barely-audible space age speech.

Review: The seventh instalment in the Schleissen series welcomes another two intriguing and smartly selected propositions in the Emotional Response sublabel's continued exploration of the depth and breadth of ambient music. New York wild cards Georgia present five different musings on richly melodic electronica ranging from the delicate to the delightfully bonkers (one of the duo's strong points). The curveball addition of A Man Called Adam is a smart one - Sally Rodgers and Steve Jones surprise everyone with five engrossing and diverse "Sketches" that leap from scatty sample manipulation to spacious drone and back again.

Review: Five years ago, Portishead front woman Beth Gibbons joined forces with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform Henryk Gorecki's "Symphony Number 3 (Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs)" at the National Opera Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Here, the recording of the concert is finally given a release. It's a stunning suite of classical pieces, with the orchestra making short work of Gorecki's swelling movements and deeply melancholic musical motifs. Gibbons is in particularly fine form, transforming herself into an operatic artist and accurately delivers the stunning, Polish-language pieces. It's an astonishing performance and nothing like we've ever heard from her before. The 24-minute opening track is, in particular, breathtaking.

Review: Contemporary classical is a phrase banded about far too loosely in our opinion. It would be easy to try and apply it to Carlo Giustini, for example, but the term only bears relevance in some parts. There are moments on this immersive collection of six tracks that almost feel like chamber music, choral moods without any voices or hint of a choir, for example. And the timbre is such we can almost feel the walls of a symphony hall around us, but the performance would be one of such profound intimacy that setting seems wrong. Forget overtures, then, this is more about ambient refrains that emerge, transcend and reform. Distant noises echo subtly, never fully realising themselves, but creating tangible textures that guide us through each piece - aural breadcrumbs ensuring that when we must, it's still possible to find a way out from under the depths.

Review: Those who lived through the 1990s will happily tell you that few ambient and electronica outfits of the period could match the emotive, life-affirming majesty of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's Global Communication project. Transmissions, the pair's first retrospective of their work under the alias, offers plenty of supporting evidence for this view. It features painstakingly re-mastered - and, we will add, brilliant-sounding - versions of two full-length releases: 1993's Blood Music: Pentamerous Metamorphosis, a radical set of lengthy ambient "translations" of tracks by forgotten shoegaze outfit Chapterhouse, and their peerless debut album 76:14, which remains one of the greatest ambient sets of all time. Throw in a third CD featuring collected singles and remixes, and you have a thoroughly essential three-disc set.

Review: While some would argue that it was the Orb or Pete Namlook who defined the sound of the 1990s ambient movement, you'll struggle to find a finer set of immersive electronic tracks than Global Communication's 1994 debut album 76:14. Here reissued on vinyl by its creators, Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, with stunning, re-mastered sound (seriously, it has never sounded better), packaging and liner notes, the album still has the ability to take your breath away with its beauty, emotiveness and the almost neo-classical style of the duo's track construction. Highlights are plentiful, from the hip-hop influenced IDM shuffle of '9:25' and Namlook-ish bliss of '9:39', to the delicately layered choral vocals and deep chords of '12:18', and rushing release of the '8.01'/'5:23' double-header (better-known as 'Maiden Voyage').

Review: Before recording their stunning debut album, 76:16, Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton were asked to prepare a set of remixes of tracks by shoegaze band Chapterhouse. This became Blood Music: Pentamorous Metamorphosis, a stunning set of lengthy ambient visions and gently unfurling electronic epics that combined repurposed and reframed samples from Chapterhouse's songs with Pritchard and Middleton's own mesmerising musical ideas. In turns hazy, haunting, otherworldly and intoxicating, the album's five "phases" are not so much remixes as revolutionary reworks that take of Chapterhouse's music to deeply psychedelic new places. As this freshly re-mastered, re-packaged reissue proves, it was, and remains, an astonishing piece of work.

Review: Three years on from their first inspired full-length collaboration, electro-acoustic experimentalists and composers Yair Elazar Glotman and Mats Erlandsson join forces once more. The result is a 50-minute suite of tracks that mixes swelling, surging orchestral movements with processed electronic sounds and a rich, bass-heavy approach to sound design. It's not quite ambient - it's too detailed, carefully crafted and intricate for that - but it isn't exactly neo-classical, either, instead existing in some kind of opaque netherworld between the two. Whatever you call it, "Emanate" is exceedingly immersive, rewarding those listeners who take time to take it all in using a great pair of headphones.

Review: "So so beautiful" is apparently the phrase contemporary classical hero Ryuichi Sakamoto used to describe the work of Keith Kenniff, AKA Goldmund. The latter's latest, The Time It Takes, certainly fits that bill. A stunning, serene and quietly powerful collection of sonic stories that seem to tell tales of hope, heartbreak, love and loss without resorting to words.

Largely centred on Kenniff's deft piano skills, the keys act as focal points on which bigger and more ethereal arrangements hang. Tracks like 'Of No Other' and 'Day In Day Out' take the producer's minimalist spirit to heart, limiting the scale of background sounds to distant echoed refrains, while 'Memory Itself' and several others embrace the principles of drone ambient with arrangements that seem to develop without us ever noticing. A hushed epic, to say the least.

Review: It has been said before that Keith Kenniff is a busy man, but you wouldn't think it to hear this album. Or at least he seems unaffected by that busyness, managing to retain an un-rushed, thoughtful grace throughout this minimalistic piano stunner. Originally recorded in 2005, at a time when many people were still in awe of his work as Helios, and output on the Merck label, 'Corduroy Road' defied many expectations we might have had based on those other points of references, and confirmed the man in question as a real musical tour de force to be reckoned with. Quiet, calm listening perfection that defines the phrase 'ivory tinkling', it's guaranteed to stop you dead in your tracks and leave a lasting impression once the final notes fade from earshot.

Review: Green-House is the handiwork of Olive Ardizoni, who finds a sympathetic ear in Leaving Records for her delicate, pastoral strains of ambient reflection. Rather than being static, these are charmingly alive pieces that quiver with sensitivity and plaintive melodies that suggest some inspiration from the iconic Mort Garson record composed for houseplants. If you enjoyed that wobbly ride through sweet-natured synth refrains, you'll love this album too as it interweaves warm tones around bucolic field recordings. This comes highly recommended - a record that leaves you feeling nourished after listening.

Cat: DAIS 097. Rel: 19 Apr 17
  1. Track 1 (24:42)
  2. Track 2 (25:43)
Review: Did we not know better, we'd have assumed that Ragnar Grippe's "Sand" - a breathlessly brilliant, two-part ambient exploration built around delay-laden tape loops and undulating synthesizer motifs - was a brand new production. Of course, as any electronic music historian will tell you, the album was originally released in 1977 and marked the debut of the now heralded Swedish composer and experimentalist. This Dais-released reissue allows those without big record buying budgets to wallow in Grippe's eccentric masterpiece, which was recorded in two takes using live dubbing. Musically, it's trippy and fluid, though repeated listens reveals the various sources of his unearthly noises (organ, recorder, harmonica, bells, voice and Lord knows what else, all drenched in copious amounts of tape echo).

  4. Symphonic Songs (part II) (19:05)
Review: Although Swedish composer and electronic experimentalist Ragnar Grippe has been making music since 1977, his discography remains surprisingly sparse. In fact, "Symphonic Songs" is just his seventh solo album to date, though it's not a new recording. In fact, its four epic soundscapes were recorded sometime between 1977's "Sand" and 1981's "Lost Secrets". It's great that Dais has been given a chance to release the set, though, because much of the music is spellbinding - alien-sounding, otherworldly synthesizer soundscapes that ebb and flow in movements and include nods towards the Radiophonic Workshop and Morton Subotnick's 1960s modular experiments. There are occasional mangled spoken word vocals, too, just to make the listening experience even more psychedelic. Recommended.
