  6. Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:48)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

Review: Fresh from marking his return to wax with a limited edition dose of experimental jazz on 2 Headed Deer, Antonio Marini AKA Healing Force Project delivers a mini-album that joins the dots between that freewheeling style and his usual leftfield electronica, feverish ambient and mutilated techno. Compositionally, "Sideral Escape" is rather interesting, with Marini combining chopped and looped recordings of jazz instrumentation (double bass, drums, screeching guitars), with outer-space electronics, sparse drum machine beats, broken computer sounds and an impending sense of doom. It's hard to accurately describe, let alone pigeonhole, but that's no criticism; in fact, it's what makes it such an intriguing and enjoyable listen.

Review: Hakobune returns to the label with this beautiful 3 song LP. These songs have been with me for the last few months and have been such a comforting presence during such a tumultuous time. 3 blissful pieces for guitar with gentle overlapping tones and field recordings, ending with the glorious side-long piece oichi. I've listened to this more times than I can count this spring, and I'm so happy to share it with you all.

The pieces are named after rivers and streams near the artist's home, places of solitude.

Review: To say that Lauren Halo's peculiar brand of organic-electronic fusion is "acclaimed" would be an understatement. Her 2012 debut LP, Quarantine, was named as The Wire's album of the year. Here, the Ann Arbor raised producer continues to dazzle with another off-kilter selection of curious compositions. Veering from tipsy, near ambient soundscapes (see the unruly "Serendip" and psychedelic "Melt") to clattering percussion jams ("Oneiroi"), via deep techno ("Chance of Rain") and blissful musical simplicity (the piano lament of "Out" and beatless tropical jazz of "Dr Echt"), Chance of Rain is every bit as enthralling, unusual and inspiring as its predecessor. That's high praise indeed.

  6. Nahbarkeit (10:08)
Review: Laurel Halo's latest release was apparently inspired by her recent film score work for Amsterdam-based arts collective Metahaven. Certainly, it's a largely becalmed and beguiling collection, experimental in ethos but also cinematic in tone. It contains a sextet of instrumental pieces that vary in style and tone from the loopy, otherworldly creepiness of "The Sick Mind" and droning "Supine", where ambient chords and manipulated cello notes combine to create a druggy soundscape, to the slowly unfurling, widescreen epics that open and close the mini-album. These, particularly "Raw Silk Uncut Wood" are intensely picturesque and beautiful, with Halo subtly shifting between epic ambient passages and the kind of sweeping, string-laden musical movements that mark out the finest cinematic compositions.

Review: If there's one thing that the recent spate of Motohiko Hamase reissues proves, it was that the Japanese jazz bassist turned ambient experimentalist was impressively versatile. So while 1988's "Notes of Forestry" saw him explore pastoral sounds, miminalist motifs and new age synthesizers, by 1993 he'd moved on to making hypnotic blends of leftfield house and techno. "Technodrome", then, is a highly unusual but must-check set: an album in which his free-jazz bass and guitar solos weave in and out of hypnotic lo-fi drum machine rhythms, ghostly chords, minimalist techno motifs and bubbly, mind-altering electronic motifs. The album has been described as "ambient house" before, but that really doesn't do justice to its inventiveness and complexity. Recommended.

Review: Reissues don't come more significant than this. Jon Hassell's work new and old has been enjoying plentiful appraisal in recent years, with his outlook on Fourth World music finding fresh relevance with a modern crop of artists. While much of his catalogue has been given a fresh lease of life, they've been saving one of his most seminal works. Vernal Equinox was originally released in 1978, one of Hassell's first albums alongside Earthquake Island. It's essentially the blueprint for outernational music - a heady brew of global signifiers stewing together in one unclassifiable pot marked out only by Hassell's inimitable trumpet style. From ambient heads to sonic explorers, you won't want to miss the chance to own this most precious of albums.

Review: Two years ago, Jon Hassell made more than a few jaws drop with "Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume 1)", the genre-bending trumpeter and composer's first studio album in nine years. On that album, he effortlessly updated his trademark "Fourth World" sound - a decidedly cosmic, impossible-to-pigeonhole mix of traditional, otherworldly, exotic and cutting-edge sounds - for a new era. He takes a similar approach on this "companion album", somehow fusing experimental jazz, disparate global sounds, ambient, electronica and digi-dub in a myriad of thrilling, boundary blurring ways. It's a startling piece of work and one that defiantly rewards repeat listens, but then we expect nothing less from someone of Hassell's skill and standing. Recommended.

Review: Steve Hauschildt's profile has been on a steady rise since he moved from his long time home of Kranky to Ghostly International. It was a logical move to partner up with the Ann Arbor label as it encouraged the emotional side of his regal ambient pieces to shine through in line with the sensitive tones of other Ghostly alumni (Tycho, Telefon Tel Aviv, Shigeto, for example). On his second album for the label, Hauschildt sounds more moving than ever, his winsome compositions reaching towards bigger spaces especially on rhythmically charged tracks like "Subtractive Skies". This is no drastic departure from his established identity, but rather a considered evolution towards a new space in which his muse can reside.

Review: While Tim Hecker has a well-earned reputation for extreme electronic experimentation, he's always been capable of delivering releases shot through with intense beauty. It's this side of Hecker's output that's explored on Love Streams, his first album for three years. Effortlessly melodious, fluid, and constantly evolving, it pairs fuzzy, drone-inspired textures, melancholic atmospherics and ear-pleasing ambient melodies, with flashes of steel drums, manipulated string arrangements, and the distinctive sound of an Icelandic choir. It's a sound palette that ensures a stream of memorable, eyes-closed moments, from the Tangerine Dream inspired "Voice Crack", to the loved-up bliss of the two-part "Violet Monumental".

Review: Tim Hecker's music has a way of consistently confounding expectations thanks to his ever shifting nature, and Virgins is no exception. While 2011's Ravedeath 1972 felt weighed down by its sandblasted sound that brought to mind a ravaged landscape, and last year's Instrumental Tourist was filled with subtle Eastern influences, Virgins comes with a sound that feels somehow elegiac; opener "Prism" places cacophonous organs stretched to infinity, while "Radiance" is as close as Hecker will get to the sound of an angelic chorus. Other moments prove more introspective, such as "Live Room Out", and the sullen piano keys of "Black Refraction". It's an album with the same instantly timeless quality of Fennesz's Venice, and comes highly recommended.

  6. You Never Were (8:28)
Review: "Anoyo", Tim Hecker's latest must-check album, was apparently designed as a companion piece to its predecessor, 2018's "Konoyo". Like that album, it was inspired by his desire to fuse his brand of experimental electronica and wayward ambient music with the sounds of "gagaku" - a form of Japanese classical music famed for being played at the Far East nation's Imperial Court. In practice, that means recordings of traditional Japanese instruments and drums chopped, sliced, looped, mangled and reversed, fused with Hecker's own spacey ambient electronics and hazy electronic textures. It's a unique recipe, but one that results in a string of sublime, otherworldly compositions that just get better with each successive listen.

  10. Trade Winds, White Heat (4:35)
Review: 2003's Radio Amor has been one of our personal Tim Hecker favourites. For an artist who has released and collaborated on so much timeless ambient music, it is a bold statement. But, it is also a calculated one. The fact that it hasn't been reissued on vinyl since its original drop does have an effect, of course, but it's also one of Hecker's most pensive works, with its tunes lingering mid-air with a confidence that is rarely heard in ambient and drone these days. For instance, the sinister tension of "Spectral" reigns supreme over most other tracks of its ilk, but the majority of its quality rests in propensity to blend different emotions thanks to disparate sounds and an inhuman build up of energy. Highly recommended.

Review: On his last album, 2016's "Love Streams", long-serving ambient experimentalist Tim Hecker joined forces with an Icelandic choir and orchestra. This time round, he has headed East, utilizing the services of Japanese musicians and percussionists. The resultant set, "Konoyo", tips a wink to Japan's deep history in both ambient and jazz, but is far darker and dystopian in tone. It's an intriguing approach, all told, and one that allows for tracks to organically evolve, slowly shifting between fluid, otherworldly dreaminess and unsettling, paranoid creepiness. It's this interplay - not just between darkness and light, but also the experimental and the traditional - that makes "Konoyo" such a riveting and enjoyable listen.

Review: The Reinvention of Romance, percussionist and composer Sarah Hennies' latest must-check album, started life as a commission from Knoxville duo Two-Way Street (cellist Ashlee Booth and percussionist Adam Lion) to write them, "a very long piece". The finished album ticks that box, stretching 90-mnutes of music - over four sides of wax. Two-Way Street's performance of Hennies' score - which, minimalism style, revolves around repeating patterns that shape-shift every few minutes - is never less than mesmerising, while the composer's own production and mixing adds an extra layer of out-there intrigue. The piece's genius lies in the occasional moments when the percussion and cello patterns meet; at those points, the album becomes a surprisingly harmonious treat.

Review: While Greek producer Hior Chronik tends to be at his best when pushing boundaries, he never forgets the fundamental role played by melody. It can be heard in his slowly shifting ambient pieces and becomes even more prevalent when he veers towards neo-classical territory. "Blind Heaven" sits in the latter category. While atmospheric and otherworldly - thanks in part to his judicious use of drone style textures and spaced-out experimental sounds - the album's main calling card is the quality of the orchestration and the slow creep of his increasingly intense arrangements. It's genuinely emotive stuff, with the overriding themes being melancholy, anger and regret.

Review: It's been seven years since Holden's debut album The Idiots Are Winning was released on his own Border Community imprint, and in that time new material has been scarce to say the least. Thankfully, The Inheritors was well worth the wait; produced with a combination of Holden's extensive analogue modular system and his own self-coded software, the album takes in influences as wide as The KLF, Elgar, ceilidh music, pentatonic folk scales and ancient pagan rituals, with each track recorded in one take with no overdubs. Border Community cohort Luke Abbott's Holkham Drones album would be the closest comparison, but even that superb record doesn't come close to the sprawling marvel that is The Inheritors, with highlights like the jazz sax of "The Caterpillar's Intervention" and twisting analogue techno of "Gone Feral" coming thick and fast.

Review: It doesn't take much imagination to picture Hopkins' delight at positioning 'Light Through The Veins' smack bang in the middle of this album, which he first released in 2008. As rousing, life-affirming and inspiring as anything the producer has made, it arrived at a point when he'd been sharing studios and stages with a diverse range of artists - for example, Brian Eno, King Creosole, David Holmes and Coldplay. By this point he had cemented his status as one of those rare talents whose genre of choice is simply 'music'.

Of course Insides is Hopkins solo, so very much rooted in the post-club dance world he grew out of. Nevertheless, the evidence of his broad mastery is clear as day. Staccato stressed hi hats and sombre keys on 'Colour Eye', the most perfectly heartbreaking piano solo, 'Autumn Hill', and head-nodding dystopian downtempo on 'Wire'. Very good indeed, and very much worth returning to.

Review: The Late Night Tales mix series - going strong since way back in 2003 - never ceases to both amaze and please our eardrums when they're in need of a sonic massage. With legendary artists such as Fatboy Slim, Jamiroquai, Groove Armada, MGMT and many others on their roster, you just know it's going to be quality throughout. This time it's up to Domino man Jon Hopkins to give us an outlook onto his own tastes and musical influences. The selection is vast and varied, with everyone from Four Tet to Darkstar and even Peter Broderick featuring within. An incandescent blend of sci-fi electronica, tropical bass nuggets and lighter shades of drone-fuelled house. Quality.

Review: Swedish composer Maria W Horn has previously been noted for her academic approach to ambient and neo-classical music, composing pieces that tend towards the conceptual. She's at it again on sophomore set "Epistasis", whose title track - performed by an eight-piece double string quartet -is based on progressions in F minor inspired by early '90s black metal. Of course, the resultant cyclical minimalism - a thread throughout the album - sounds nothing like that infamous Scandinavian style, though the track is a little darker and more intense than the ethereal and sometimes poignant pieces that make up the rest of the set. These tracks are conceptual and experimental too, making use of everything from cutting edge compositional techniques to a computer-controlled Disklavier piano and a "supercollider framework using phase modulation synthesis".

Review: There's not a lot of info about Scott Gailey Spring's first album as Hotspring, though Mood Hut's description of it being, 'digital technology half buried in the soil', is rather good. Throughout, Gailey employs a brilliantly inventive, off-kilter mixture of tipsy, off-kilter drumbeats, distant auto-tuned vocalizations, manipulated new age music sounds, pulsing ambient chords, fluttering electronic motifs and knowing nods to future R&B. It's extremely hard to accurately describe, but both brilliantly beautiful and undeniably eccentric: the kind of album that will have you scratching your head and smiling enthusiastically at the same time. If you don't believe us, we'd suggest checking out the clips ASAP.

Review: Since making his debut in the early 2010s, Berlin-based American Steve Huerta has delivered a string of rock solid, dancefloor-focused EPs. On debut album "Junipero", he's decided to mix things up, delivering a warm, woozy, atmospheric and picturesque set of tracks designed to ease tired minds in the comfort of the home. There's a few nods towards the dancefloor present - not least the toasty and dreamy breakbeat house cut "All Wild Things Are Shy" and bustling "Waxwing Air" - but for the most part the set settles in to a comfortably melodious and gently enveloping blend of blissful ambient, dub-flecked electronic soundscapes, spaced-out IDM and intergalactic electronica. It's a hugely enjoyable journey.

Review: Multi-instrumentalist and composer Naliah Hunter's debut, 'Spells', is a much-needed slice of ambient fantasy. The project began as an "exercise in reclamation" over her own musical motivations, and resulted in a 6-track ritual in which each piece represents a different kind of magic spell.

Like protective water, air and fire charms, Hunter takes on many incantatory roles. She is a vocalist, harpist, and synth player. Her harp, in particular, takes centre stage; the calming wind spell 'Quiet Light', for example, is an embellishment of scale flourishes and dangling chimes.

Hunter likens her studio to an altar, taking ritualistic care to light candles and incense while creating. Like the track 'Talisman' - with sprinklings of midrange tones, relieved breaths and interpretive semi-lyrics - her music is intended for healing. A chunk of the album's proceeds are being given to the Loveland Foundation, which provides therapy for young black women.

Like beautiful but dissolving memories, every track fades out only after around two minutes, like the effusive wispiness of an apprentice wizard's practice. Speaking to KEXP, Hunter noted that her 'spells' had the express purpose of "creating locations away from here"; they are specifically "transportation spells". Fantasy has always been a genre of escape; like a timid fairy or Harry Potter snitch, the EP flits past in a wonderful plume of magic smoke.
