Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

Review: The smudged, dark and shadowy nature of the creepy artwork for this new 12" on TMN Trax is indicative of what to expect musically of this new label. It's a collab EP from Ones and Rasval with an appearance from The Metropolitan Narrative and remixes from Vril and Sleeparchive. 'Tau' is the deep and dubby roller that opens up with a grainy vibe and foggy atmosphere over muted drums, then 'Nebelgelb' gets more edgy with layers of subtle haunting pads and paranoid voices panning about the mix. Vril's contribution is a pacey, warm and lo-fi techno hypnotiser and Sleeparchive closes down with muted dub brilliance.

Review: If you've ever been luck enough to attend the Freerotation music festival than plenty about this remix package will make sense. Not least the interpretation by event co-founder and modular synth hero Steevio, here delivering a remix on vinyl for the first time. Bringing in elements of jazz, ambient, field recordings, dub, house music and - albeit barely audible - subtle shades of tech, it's a sophisticated package that fully buys into the theory of electronic sounds being a form of high art. Running the gamut from the stepping, poised but decidedly free spirited 'Lucid' and Deadbeat's tense, drone-y take on'Sam Gimignano', to the lush keys and white noise of Andrea Cicheki's redo of 'Siegfried 2.0' and Dr Nojoke's beautifully blissed out smoky house, it's as dense as it is accomplished.

Review: After four years of work fusing acoustic and electronic sound worlds, Rand finally unveiled the fruits of their labours with Peripherie. The duo of concert pianist Jan Gerdes and minimal techno producer Dr. Nojoke have cooked up urban and sensitive music for piano and electronics that was all recorded live with no overdubs back in 2019 at Berlin's Chez-Cherie Studios. It was made across three pianos with improvisation at the heart of the process. It's a great collision of worlds, from dark and intense pieces of pulsing techno to more light and hopeful and empty soundscapes that perfectly blur the edges between the different tools used. Fans of Nils Frahm, Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto will enjoy digging into this one.

Review: Regis and Female's Againstnature album from 2000 gets the full reissue treatment here by Berlin label, Tresor. Released under their given names Karl O'Connor and Peter Sutton, the record is a noted zenith of the Birmingham techno scene of the era. It has had a major influence on the music that was released in the years after and has here been remastered for a fresh double vinyl pack. As well as the original sounds, there is also 'Theme From Streetwalke,' a track that was previously released on a Tresor compilation. The tracks are heavy but relatively stripped back. They're packed with texture and atmosphere and never less than hugely compelling.

Review: Roy Of The Ravers takes a break from his mischievious outings on Acid Waxa et al to lay down some of his braindance tackle on Emotional Response. White Line Sunrise II.I (Le Roy Soleil) can rightly be considered a follow-up to White Line Sunrise II and indeed it represents a similar kind of spectrum of electronica. Roy's sound is edging further into the kind of 'artist' territory where slower, softer tracks, odd vocal diversions and some pop sensibilities merge with the acid, electro, breakbeat and other well-established tropes of his sound. It's the kind of record which could easily broach this quirky fringe operator of UK electronics to a broader fan base, and there's no doubt he's got the melodic, emotional heft on tracks like 'Versace 101624' to get everyone on board.

Review: The state51 Conspiracy label comes very much correct early on in the New Year with this two-track grey marbled vinyl 12" in a fancy spot-varnished sleeve. It takes the form of two fresh Santaka reworks of original compositions by Rytis Mazulis and avant-garde choir Melos Collective which were first released back in 2020. Santaka, which means "confluence" in Lithuanian, is the coming together of DJ and producer Manfredas and drummer and producer Marijus Aleksa and here they layer up disembodied vocals and dark jazz melodies on 'Ramybe' and then 'Autoportretas' is a textural ambient exploration packed with fascinating sound designs.

Review: It's fair to say Placelessness is the work of an Australian experimental supergroup. Oren Ambarchi has been a towering figure of hyper-minimalism since the mid-80s, most notably creating tense and elongated stretches of recordings and performance using guitar tone. Robbie Avenaim is an accomplished experimental drummer, and Chris Abrahams heads up The Necks. That's a very condensed biography for three incredibly accomplished musicians who finally make good on years of live collaborations and criss-crossed pathways to deliver a stunning album which brings their respective qualities into sharp relief, somehow fuller than their solo efforts without losing the vital subtlety and patience which has guided them to greatness.

Review: Way back in 1995, the late Susuma Yokota joined forces with Ray Castle, an Australian producer then based in Japan, for an album of 'tribal-ritual ambient' tracks as Mantaray. For whatever reason, the trippy, partially mixed patchwork of effects-laden percussion, mind-altering electronics, dreamy chords and mind-altering vocal samples was not released on vinyl first time round - hence this edition from archival release specialists Transmigration. It's a genuinely unique album that's alternately becalmed and unsettling, offering a psychedelic drift through hallucinatory, dawn-ready soundscapes that features plenty of subtle nods towards Japanese and Indigenous Australian musical culture. It's basically a slept-on 90s ambient classic, so this vinyl reissue is well worth picking up.

Review: The mighty Hospital Records is reissuing Green Graves, a classic album from Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement from back in 2016. It's an album that, as the title suggests, soundtracks a trip through the jungle with steamy pads and humid atmospheres, distant animal sounds and deep tribal rhythms. It's full of ambient and experimental mystery and intrigue, with suspenseful pads over barely-there skeletal drums that snake through the undergrowth on cuts like 'Red Protection Against Black Magic'. 'Nocturnal Anatomy' is darker and more dubby, hitting at the arrival of humans and their machines who come to destroy the forest.

Review: Phoebe Guillemot's world-building as RAMZi has yielded us a plethora of exquisite albums since she first emerged in the tape-oriented scene around 2013. She's gone on to helm different projects, tour the world and generally blossom as a singular and gifted artist. After a string of self-released LPs, she's popped up on Music From Memory with one of her most refined works to date. Review: RBI's biggest claim to underground stardom yet is her new experimental jungle-techno-ish album Disseminate. It's said that earlier cuts like 'Proximity' did some justice to her sound, but it's artists like her who really require a lot more time per vinyl side to really demonstrate their own talents. On this LP, strangely garbled classical instruments are heard interspersed with filtered junglism and no less odd breakwork, with airy and roomy cuts like 'Vault Ultra' and '100o10o1hz' proving RBI as one of experimental dance music's foremost greats - unafraid neither of rhythm-driven bangers nor curiously weird skits.

This one dates back to 2006 and came after a 6-year break from recording. It is dark and broody electronic music "which sets the listener a challenge to analyse what makes us human and subHuman." It's a collaboration with bluesman Joe Richardson who served up guitars as well as harmonica and eerie vocals. Themes in the record include murder, death, and religion while guest singer Carla Trevaskis did a fine job of serving up ethereal sound on 'Allelujah'.

Review: Light In The Attic's continued series of Lou Reed reissues follows up the outstanding Words and Music, May 1965 with this wholly different side to the legendary singer-songwriter. As a devoted student of Tai Chi, Reed composed some ambient pieces for his own personal use while practicing. It was only as friends started to ask for copies that he decided to round the project out and present it as his last solo album - in his own words, "I then wrote two more pieces with the same intent: to relax the body, mind, and spirit and facilitate meditation." As well as the music, remastered and pressed onto double vinyl, there's bonus reading material in the form of interviews with people close to Reed in the context of his Tai Chi, yoga and meditation practice.

Review: On their Eskimo album - which is in part famous because of its creepy artwork - The Residents explore with music, found sounds and sonic collages, the legends and myths of north America's native coastal tribes. The group travelled to the area to make field recordings, learn from and record with those peoples and then left for home with what they found. It took years for the album to come out and now it arrives with a booklet on double 12". It's pretty freaky to be honest - weird vocals, eerie synth whispers, distant animal grunts and breaking waves all make for unsettling and hugely evocative soundscapes.

Review: As this expansive reissue proves, Max Richter's 2004 album The Blue Notebooks remains one of the greatest neo-classical works of recent decades. The album was famously inspired by the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and featured narration from actress Tilda Swinton. Such was the record's impact, in fact, that numerous pieces subsequently appeared on a variety of high profile movie soundtracks. Review: .Keyboardist John Tilbury has been a friend of Terry Riley for decades, and on numerous occasions has performed the Minimalist composer's infamous 'Keyboard Studies' - early cyclical compositions for piano or synthesiser that encourage the performer to improvise and create variations on a theme - in public. He also recorded them for BBC Radio in 1971. The recordings showcased here, first released in 2022 and now finally available again on CD, were recorded in Hamburg, Germany, "at some point between the 1970s and 1995". Rich in natural reverb, slowly shifting melodic motifs and subtle variations, his renditions of the 20-minute-plus 'Keyboard Study #1' and 'Keyboard Study #2' are simply sublime; awe-inspiring translations of two of Riley's most mesmerising early works. Also included is a superbly spacey, synthesiser-powered version of Riley's 1965 composition 'Dorian Reeds'.

Review: Rings Around Saturn (Rory McPike) returns for his latest full-length album after 2018's self-titled brokntoys debut, moving on from self-definition to explore a new concept, that of 'All Things Shining'. The LP touches on ambient, electroacoustic studies and filmic/VGM composition, but outside of these references, it stands as a beautiful suite of songs, effortlessly evoking a palette that seems to burst and ooze with a mood of jubilance and hope. Fans of hedonic calculators like Barker will similarly pleased at its use of trance dispositifs, but which are yet lent a glossier, rainmaking vibe ('Sphereology'), while later cuts go on to evoke idyllic Hellenic hallways and walled paradisiacal gardens, with a vocal-angelic edge.

Review: Sebastien Robert is an interdisciplinary artist who is in emotive and explorative mood on Emerging Threshold, his debut long player. The record is a richly layered affair where field recordings and synthesised sounds all naturally coexist. There are new age elements and hints of kosmische musik to this ambient, but it is often intense and thoroughly involving rather than simply aural wall paper. The trutruka, a traditional wind instrument of the Mapuche people of south-central Chile, is a central tenet of the record which is the result of Robert's sonic exploration of the western flank of the Sierra Nevada volcano.

Review: New Robohands LP Palms is the fifth album from the London based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter. Moving towards different genres and arrangements from his previous albums, 'Palms' features duelling harp parts, tape echo, double bass and draws inspiration from artists such as Dorothy Ashby, Azimuth, Alice Coltrane and Toquinho. In parts tropical and synth-drenched, and in others stripped-back and acoustic, Palms is a journey back in time to the saturated analog recordings of the late 60s and 70s, with a subtle modern layer of glitch FX and pitch-controlled experimentation in places. The album makes also reference to classic releases from jazz fusion that feature the legendary Arp Odyssey synthesiser, used by artists such as Herbie Hancock and George Duke.

Rhythms that do appear are subtle, supple, and sit in the background while centre sated is given to the emotive piano keys and slowly shifting deep space ambient pads. It's an excellent work of grown up downtempo bliss.

Review: Los Angeles-based Canadian-American experimentalist Claire Rousay has made a name for herself due to her unique approach to post-rock-inflected ambience built off of primitive DIY field recordings captured on a Zoom H5 Handy Recorder, resulting in a curious form of emo musique concrete or "emo-ambient". Following on from a myriad of collaborations, projects, and singles, Sentiment marks her first full-length to put her usually hidden voice front and centre; utilising auto-tune to craft emotive hyper-folk musings delivered with androgynous hues. Described as a "meditation of the poignant emotional terrains of loneliness, nostalgia, sentimentality, guilt, and sex"; Rousay uses fractured narratives and one-way conversations to deliver painfully relatable, often uncomfortable musings, smothered beneath layers of droning reverb, monotonous acoustic plucking, and everyday sounds almost too familiar to pinpoint. Review: Mysterious techno artist Rrose presents their first ever CD release, and their second full-length project to date. Following 2019's Hymn to Moisture, Please Touch features 11 slippery slinkers, flaunting Rrose's penchant for hypnotics and minimalisms; the likes of 'Spores' and 'Spines' refuse to indulge too many novel sounds, preferring to allow their more immersive textures to rattle and ricochet over each mix, producing a delugey wash. Review: Dutch 'West Coast' sound pioneer Ruud Lekx has been serving up suitably dark, throbbing and wayward dancefloor jams since the mid 1990s, most frequently under the name familiar Rude 66 alias. On his latest full-length excursion - the long-serving producer's first for six years - the clandestine melodies, weirdo analogue synth sounds and horror movie soundtrack textures have been dialled up to eleven. That's no bad thing, because Lekx does it far better than most. Review: Raison d'etre is Peter Andersson and Troum is Stefan Knappe and Martin Gitschel and between them they take a deep dive into subterranean worlds on this collection of amenity works that was recorded between 2011 and 2014. This is the first time they have been pressed to wax and we're delighted about it - the grainy pads and crystalline synths that cut through the foggy mire sound so much better on wax. Each of these pieces is an ever shifting tapestry of icy noise, luminous drones and guitar-driven melodies with a ghostly quality. It's a devastatingly impactful work from these dark ambient maestros.
