Review: If there's one collaboration that we have bowed down to over the last few years, it's most certainly this new found friendship between London's Kevin Martin aka The Bug, and American doom metal guitarists, Earth. One wouldn't immediately make the connection between inner-city future-grime music and suburban stoner rock, but the two styles were in perfect unison, and this is because they're both fascinated with dark, looming clouds of bass. Whether that's through virtual synths or badass bass guitars, it doesn't matter, because the mood is mightily present. Concrete Desert is the alliance's debut LP, and it's all guns blazing from start to finish; tunes like "Snakes vs Rats" or "Metal Drone" represent exactly the sort of freshen-up that each respective act needed - on the one hand, The Bug could have done with some more external influences to the melodic constructions, while Earth needed a new framework to enter the minds of a new, European audience. We've dubbed this style 'metal drone', and we're pretty sure that it's gonna stick after you've played it out for a few minutes. A blinding collab, right here.

Review: Jim Kirby AKA The Caretaker has been serving up volumes of the decidedly experimental "Everywhere At The End Of Time" series since 2016. This four-disc set gathers together albums four, five and six, each of which was inspired by a different aspect of dementia. So while "Stage 4" offers up a quartet of music concrete style sample collages and crackle-laden 1920s period pieces, "Stage 5" is dark, noisy, intense and droning - a kind of confused, cloudy aural soundscape that defies easy categorization. "Stage 6", the final album is the series, is largely quiet and contemplative, featuring lengthy, crackle-laden ambient movements that arguably count among the artist's most impactful pieces to date.

  11. Lovesong (3:54)
  12. Memories (3:58)
Review: During the recording of One Hundred Billion Sparks, his first album for two years, Max Cooper did a lot of thinking. Developed concurrently with a new live show, he says every track on the 12-track set was written "as a score to a virtual story stemming from this system of one-hundred billion sparking neurons which create us". The resultant music is naturally widescreen and epic in tone, with early electronic "movements" - think neo-classical minded ambient soundscapes - slowly making way for more immersive, beat-driven dancefloor fare as the album progresses. It's an approach that pays dividends time and again, whether on the delicately spacey and cinematic beauty of standout ambient cut "Reciprocity", or the more rhythmic pulse of "Emptyset" and the shuffling IDM bliss of "Platonic".

Bamboo Music
Bamboo Music (heavyweight vinyl LP + insert)
Cat: AI 15. Rel: 06 Aug 19
  1. Dream/Dron Sax/Desert/Africa/Rioja/A View/Eleven (19:25)
  2. Continue/Moments/Swamp/Lion/Seagull (19:37)
Review: Astral Industries have shaped a sizable portion of their catalogue around the work of The Chi Factory, and so it continues with this release from core member of the Dutch group, Jacobus Derwort. "Bamboo Music" gathers together some of the music Derwort released on tape back in 1987 along with other unearthed curios, all stitched together into the mystical trip that defines all Chi Factory releases. This is Fourth World voyaging for the deep divers, an evocative delight from imagined lands steeped in organic warmth and cosmic mysticism, and we should be very thankful Astral are on hand to do the fine job of pressing it to wax, not least in those fantastic Theo Ellsworth sleeves.

Review: Coming from a classical piano background, Nils Frahm has certainly turned into one dark dude! Having already released plenty of works on a myriad of labels, he lands on London-based Erase Tapes with what is probably one of his wildest pieces of music to date. Spanning 12 tracks in total, Frahm goes from joyful odes to the piano over to psychedelic synth improvisations to what sound like intricate tape manipulations, nutty drum-machine programming and a bag full o'field recordings. If you're into the idea of Tchaikovsky on some serious amounts of stimulants then look no further, this guy is shaping the way pianos are played...

Review: Long players from L'estasi Dell'oro, D.A.R.F.D.H.S and Kartei signalled a move into artist albums from Dutch label Field that felt wholly right, and they've scored a real treat again in securing this Cold Radiance LP from Japanese artist IORI. Known for a potent brand of deep techno that has seen releases on Semantica, Prologue and DJ Nobu's Bitta label, Iori Asano is offered the chance to explore something different on this, his second album. Encourage to dabble in more explicitly ambient and experimental composition, Asano positively revels in this creative freedom for an eight-track album he himself likens to an "aerial sci-fi movie soundtrack." The gravelly sonic tones of opener "Transmission" sets the scene for what turns out to be one of the most enjoyable ambient techno albums of 2016 so far.

Review: In honour of the launch of the "Love Record Stores" project, Mute has decided to make Pole's brilliant third album, "3", available in a special yellow-vinyl edition. That's as good an excuse as any to add it to your record collection, though the set's undisputed quality and stone-cold classic status is arguably more of a selling point. By the time he originally released it, Stefan Betke had successfully fine-tuned his spaced-out, minimalist electronic dub style. Combining hypnotic rhythms, some influenced by hip-hop and others by Basic Channel style dub techno, with deep dub basslines, opaque electronics and dusty, often glitchy samples, Betke used "3" to cement his reputation as a genuine sonic innovator. While all of his albums are essential, "3" is arguably the best of the lot.

Review: The launch of the Love Record Stores project has inspired Mute to reissue each of Stefan Betke's first three albums as Pole on coloured vinyl. First-up is his 1998 debut album, "1", which this time round appears on navy blue wax. While Betke successfully refined his sound over the years that followed, "1" was where he unveiled his trademark glitch-dub style for the very first time. It remains a must-check classic: a hazy, insatiably crackly and spaced-out affair that re-imagines electronic dub as an otherworldly amalgam of ambient, electronica, sound collage, sample-heavy sonic textures and the deep basslines/echoing electronics more often associated with dub techno.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist and theater performer from Japan. She performs solo on marimba and other percussive instruments and has released two solo albums, in particular Through The Looking Glass - which originally released in 1983 and gets a much needed remaster here by WeRelease/MusiquePourLaDanse/MentalGroove. Takada's renewed success is a true product of our times: her music was 'discovered' via YouTube's algorithm a few years back which amassed millions of views and created a new generation of fans enamoured by her amazing work. In the wake of the YouTube video's popularity, she has toured Europe multiple times and other albums by her have also since been reissued in the last year.
