Review: Olivia Block is back with an album that it is fair to say is her best as well as most ambitious and rewarding to date. The Mountain Pass is a compelling new work from the artist who is a key part of Chicago's vibrant experimental music scene and has been since the late 90s. She has proven prolific over the years and always fuses practices from the musique concrete tradition with her own sense of studio improv, sound installations and orchestral pieces. This album was recorded by Greg Norman at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio and is the result of distilling works made over the course of three years. They find Block head into all new terrain, at times zoning out with neo-classical bliss, at others working you into a freeform jazz and noise frenzy.

The Sinking Of The Titanic (24:24)
Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (24:04)
Review: A monolithic entry into the canon of longform ambient, experimental classical music, Gavin Bryars' The Sinking Of The Titanic receives the reissue treatment via Superior Viaduct. The record was initially produced by Brian Eno in 1975 as the first release on Obscure, and the title piece found Bryars fixating on the ill-fated luxury cruise liner through the perspective of its passengers. It's a haunting and engrossing piece with imperceptible layers of detail woven into its fabric. The accompanying piece, 'Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet', is equally important, revolving around a tape loop of a street singer and bringing the work of players such as Michael Nyman and Derek Bailey into the composition which builds into a powerful crescendo. Quite simply, a seminal work.

Ultra-terrestrial Yearning (3:43)
Absolute Receptivity Of All The Nerves (13:54)
Review: It seems like Celer is always 'back'; every new addition to the towering ambient artist's catalogue feels like a comeback. It was only a couple of months ago that the longest-standing Will Long moniker reemerged with the wonderwork that was Engaged Touches; admittedly, by contrast, this latest return to the fore is a reissue of a record first released in 2012. 'Perfectly Beneath Us' skews on the purely tonic side of Celer's catalogue, totally eschewing background noise or overtones for the sake of pure undulatory harmonic bliss. Each synthetic swell on this gem hits like an emotional gustation, entering through the ears but thoroughly felt in the torso.

Review: While hearing the words double geography might send you into an immediate cold heat as you're transported back to school and the thought of a long afternoon in a sweaty classroom, this Double Geography stands for quite the opposite. Open Water is the solo vehicle for audio engineer and Weird Weather member Duncan Thornley who hooks up with jazz greats like Greg Foat and Kaidi Akinnibi. It is an utterly blissed-out sound for happy daydreams and summery reveries with drifting sax notes, languid grooves and gentle Beatrice breezes washing over you to soothing effect.

Review: For the past decade, Paul Jones and Stephen Black, known collectively as Group Listening, have been musical collaborators. With Jones on woodwind and Black on keys, they have crafted a unique sound "while donning sculptural papier-mache hats". Their upcoming album, Walks, marks their first venture into entirely original compositions and it comes on PRAH Recordings amidst a slew of tour dates. The album really showcases their innovative blend of talents and musical creativity across hypnotic grooves embellished with curious melodies and innocent solos, plaintive pianos and dubby undercurrents.

Review: The glorious new album Amen represents something of a big evolution in Joy Guidry's capacity to fully capture and express a sound and concept. The spine-tingling, spiritual and beautiful record transitions from stirring, powerful jazz and gospel compositions to ambient tracks that keep you afloat amongst the stars. Each one serves as a truly profound statement of communal healing and peace. There are also some fantastic contributions from Niecy Blues, Kalia Vandever, Tyrone Allen, and Jessie Cox, all of whom help Amen to showcase Guidry's artistic growth and ability to blend genres to create a cohesive and impactful musical experience.

Review: Francis Harris has been doing a mighty fine job of straddling the worlds of deep house and ambient in the past few years, and his Scissor and Thread label is the chosen vessel for his continued explorations. Four years after Trivial Occupations, he comes back with Thresholds, which ploughs wholeheartedly into abstract, beatless territory in a world filled with twinkling piano, languorous guitar sustain, spectral field recordings and vast swathes of drone. It's a record with plenty of movement, even if it happily avoids anything like the pronounced beats of his past productions, but overall there's a dusty, hauntological feel to the record which will be best appreciated when you take a moment to pause, and we all need an excuse to do that from time to time.

Hello, Chain
Faith Made Of Silk
Review: Back in 2016, Jah Wobble offered up a two-disc trawl through the more dub-fired corners of his vast back catalogue, In Dub. While that set included dub tracks and self-made reworks that spanned the whole of his then 40-year career, this belated sequel concentrates on material made since 1990. As you'd expect given Wobble's track record, there's little straight-up dub reggae present, but rather a ton of hazy, delay-laden musical fusions that mix and match elements of ambient, electronica, post-punk, no-wave, traditional Indian music, trip-hop, psychedelia, jazz and even dense, tribal style drum tracks - all laden with the sometime Public Image Ltd member's trademark weighty bass. Throw in some never-before-heard mixes and previously vinyl-only versions, and you have another fine collection of heady, dub-wise fusions.

Review: Few artists in electronic music have the serious musical chops of Mathew Jonson. The man has formally studied jazz and always brought famous invention to his synth-heavy sounds under whatever guise he has been working with. Here he is back under his own name on Deset and opens up with some delightful and mellifluous synth ripples on 'Dawn' and then soundtracks a cosmic voyage on scattered percussive sounds and alien effects on 'Artificial Intelligence'. 'SOS' is a broken beat jazz work out and with The Mole he crafts a deep, seductive groove marbled with more great melody on 'Feels So Good.' 'Got Bass' is playful cosmic electro to close.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

A Strangely Isolated Place continues to be a vital source of intrigue in the broader sense of what ambient music can be in the modern era. Here they present the debut album from Liz Qun Wong, a classically-trained cellist and composer who has been releasing and recording as Lihla for nigh-on ten years. As you might well imagine, there's a strong electro-acoustic bed to the sound on this mesmerising full-length, but one of the real distinctions with this album is Wong's storytelling, which gently rests atop the nuanced, textural compositions and guides us into some intriguing, cinematic places.

Review: Dub techno and ambient maestro Rod Modell resurfaces on Astral Industries with another of his gorgeously escapist double albums, pressed up to nice heavy 180g vinyl for extra listening pleasure. 'Track 1' has a widescreen and soothing quality with balmy synths swirling about next to spring-like bird calls. 'Track 2' is more dense, with lo-fi drones taking centre stage while 'Track 3' is darker and more menacing thanks to a more industrial aesthetic. It's back to light, hope and optimise with closer 'Track 4' which has glowing pads layered up to perfection.

Review: "Snapshots of the myriad moods that populate trajectories of one's most intimate bonds with friends, lovers, the body, the self, and immediate surroundings. Glimpses of providing care for oneself, sparking romance, splintering, daily drama, and embarking through an inner desert. Intersections at a certain place in time, in softness and compassion. There is much pain in suspension, much anger in grief. Seek nourishment- Wide open space, endless horizon road." Packed with symbolism, Naemi's words are the perfect precursor to diving into Dust Devil. A lush, immediately alluring collection that deftly swoons and sweeps between ambient pop, lushtronica, experimental chill, and sound art, stepping inside these sounds is like wandering through strange dreamscapes, places of loose motifs, more defined by overriding atmosphere than specific details.

Review: Way back in 1995, Sun Electric (AKA Berlin-based twosome Tom Thiel and Max Loderbauer) released one of the greatest live ambient albums of all time, the stunning 30.7.94 Live, on R&S offshoot Apollo. Live at Votivkirche Wien is a follow-up of sorts - a previously unreleased recording from 1996 of the pair's show at Vienna's neo-gothic Votivkirche Wien concert hall, at which the duo made great use of the venue's natural reverb. Mixing their usual unfurling melodies and deep space chords with a mixture of gentle beats, sumptuous sound design and dubby basslines, the set ebbs and flows attractively before concluding with an inspired, stretched-out ambient techno re-interpretation of 1994 single 'Aaah!' In a word: brilliant!

Review: Wanderwelle is the Amsterdam-based ambient duo of Phil van Dulm & Alexander Bartels, who mint their Maalstrom label with Wat Gebeurde Er Met Sergeant Massuro?, a concept album based around Harry Mulisch's 1957 story of the same name (What Happened To Seagent Massuro?). The story weaves anti-colonial concepts with mythical realist elements, and is sonically brought to life here through atmospheric electronics and prepared instruments. A moody, resonant and ultimately deep groundswell of an album, one that compels the listener to venture ever further into the a spine-tingling heart of darkness.
