Ambush (12")
Cat: TEMPA 106. Rel: 13 Apr 16

Bass
Ambush (6:07)
Direction (6:12)
Review: Since 2010, and coming out of the whole post-dubstep scene, Manchester's Alex Coulton has been among the best of the UK bass artists. His skills being the mixing board have seen him travel from label to label, stopping off at the likes of Idle Hands, All Caps, Livity Sound, and even the mighty Tempa. Coulton returns to the latter with a follow-up to last year's "Recall" bombshell, and he's in no mood to mess around here. "Ambush" is a tribalesque tech-house number with a rattling percussion that renders it UK through and through; "Direction" sees the producer return to his more usual mood by serving up a broken bundle of drums and percussion curling around loose melodies and a dubbed-out makeover. For fans of Hessle output - what that bassline, son! Hot!

Hand To Hand Combat (6:35)
Concealed Weapon (6:17)
Review: There aren't many recent producers out there who have had a career as diverse and as wild as the present Alex Coulton. With his music ranging from house, to techno and bass, Coulton has released on an impressive spectrum of labels including the militant Frozen Border, Bristol's Idle Hands, Black Acre, and now dubstep heavyweight Tempa - yup, impressive, indeed! He's come along with a two-track bullet, the firs being the percussive "Hand To Hand Combat", a broken groove and a whole load of tribalesque goodness within, and the utterly stomping, totally dubbed-out and hazy "Concealed Weapon". Those swarms of bass on the latter literally made our spines tingle this morning. Hot and recommended!

Antagonise
Freefall (Function/Inland remix)
Review: As Bloc continue their newest label venture following on from the first release by Jake Chudnow, the ever-rising Alex Coulton steps up to the plate with his dynamic and distinctive version of UK floor tackle, and he sounds in the finest of fettle. "Freefall" taps into the dub techno influences in Coulton's musical make-up, snapping in some of the reverb tails to make for a finely honed midtempo workout, before "Antagonise" brings a greater sense of urgency and drama with its insistent synth work and more linear rhythmic pattern. Meanwhile for a diversion into some nervy techno filth, Function/Inland's remix of "Freefall" moves with deadly precision and a truckload of hard-processed audio muck, which is of course a wonderful thing.

Recall
Wiretap
Review: After releases on Idle Hands, Livity, All Caps and Mistry, Mancunian producer Alex Coulton made a worthy, if rather belated debut on Tempa last month as part of the label's ongoing Allstars compilation series. A debut proper for Coulton now arrives in the shape of the two track 12" Recall which finds the producer channelling some typically dark side spirits. It's most apparent on the title track where phased vocals careen around the channels as a pummelling gaseous bassline pushes the skittering half step rhythm outwards. "Wiretap" is more redolent of the Livity Sound school of skeletal polyrhythmic bangers and is no less impressive.

Break Pressure
Review: Across releases for the likes of All Caps, Idle Hands and 2nd Drop, Manchester-born Alex Coulton has shown himself to have a propensity for dub techno, atmospheric UKF and jungle-inspired rollers, and even hook-laden 4/4, always wrapped up into an unmistakable signature style. His sound has much in common with the hybrid bass music coming out of Bristol at the moment, so it makes sense that Coulton also has the honour of being the first artist to release on Pev, Kowton and Asusu's Livity Sound sub label Ytivil Dnous. Coulton's latest release will see him forge ties with another Bristol institution in the form of Murda for the long running Black Acre imprint. This two track single is described by the label as "the bass equivalent of an H-bomb", and provides what looks to be some of his most raucous material to date; "Murda" sees him rolling techno and grime into a typically heavy package, while "Break Pressure" combines more ethereal tones with a "drag-jungle beatdown."

Pointe Noire
Review: Founded as an outlet for Livity Sound to "release music that is in line with the Livity aesthetic but isn't produced by the trinity behind it", the fledgling Dnuos Ytivil has become a showcase for the productions of Alex Coulton. Having manned the debut Dnuos Ytivil release in excellent style, the Manchester based producer returns to the imprint here with the equally on point War Games 12". Whereas Pev contributed a remix to that debut 12", Coulton is granted the freedom of all 24" of wax with the title cut mainlining on the sort of minimalistic polyrhythms that Shackleton pioneered. "Pointe Noire" sees Coulton in brain melting mood, pairing dark DMZ inspired textures with crisp booming drums. One for the proper dancehalls.

Too Much Talk (Tessela remix)
Too Much Talk (Beneath 350 remix)
Review: NTS affiliates 92 Points secure some Alex Coulton heat and back it with remixes from Tessela and Beneath - this is how you put together a 12" mate. With his releases for Idle Hands and Livity Sound last year, Coulton proved himself to be one of British techno's most interesting propositions, wrapping Shackleton-style atmospherics with sparing rhythmic structures. This continues with "Too Much Talk", its UKF inspired snares and deep subs sound very much like the recent work of Beneath - who himself contributes a remix which outdoes Coulton in its tense atmospherics. The most striking rework however comes from Tessela, whose break beat jungle reinterpretation has the expected amount of compression-induced grit and rhythmic swagger.

Submerged

Fade Realization
Review: After essential releases for underground labels All Caps, Livity Sound and Idle Hands, Alex Coulton makes a deserved step towards widespread acclaim with his debut for Hypercolour's Hype Ltd series. Those familiar with the darker sounds of Coulton's earlier releases will be surprised by the catchy club-ready tech-house stabs of opening tune "Dance, Max", a track nevertheless taken into deeper territory with a solitary vocal cry and sweeping synth horn. "Submerged" meanwhile is classic Coulton; a dub-techno roller filed with atmospheric water droplet sounds, drawn out Basic Channel-inspired chords and a gently swung rhythm. On the flip, "Function" is not an ode to the Sandwell District man but a darker version of the EP's first track, clouding its stabs in greyed-out abstraction while a swelling sub-bass lurks beneath its crisp hi-hats, while closer "Fade Realization" may be the EP's finest moment, a perfect combination of dub techno aesthetics, pitch bent synth elasticity and intricate broken rhythms which belie the record's title. Bounce (Pev version)
Review: The Livity Sound imprint has swiftly attained a buy on sight reputation thanks to the impeccable releases from the three Bristol lynchpins that run it - Punch Drunk boss Peverelist, the prolific Kowton and Project Squared regular Asusu. And now, four releases deep and Livity Sound expands operations with the launch of a sub label, cunningly named dnouS ytiviL, seemingly established to "release music that is in line with the Livity aesthetic but isn't produced by the trinity behind it". Manchester based Alex Coulton further cements his links with Bristol's ever bustling music scene via a quite excellent Idle Hands 12? by stepping into the breach for the debut release. "Bounce" will advance his claim to be fully accepted as one of the West Country's adopted sons. A ripe slice of broken techno with a sly nod to Skull Disco percussion, you can see why Pev and co elected to found a new label in order to secure it! The Punch Drunk boss turns in a remix on the flip which cranks up the pressure markedly.

Alex Coulton - "Radiance" (6:12)
Chevel - "Tailwind" (4:20)
Simo Cell - "Escape The Fate" (6:30)
Review: For the fourth release on their promising Wisdom Teeth imprint, founders Facta and K-Lone have turned to the combined talents of old pal Alex Coulton, Italian produer Chevel, and fast-rising studio boffin Simo Cell. Coulton kicks things off, delivering a deliciously heavy and floor-friendly concoction that sits somewhere between broken techno, contemporary bass music, and the kind of comforting deepness more associated with hazy house productions. Chevel does an excellent job of calming things down, layering up bleeping electronics and ambient textures to create something reminiscent of mid '90s IDM, before Simo Cell attempts to "Escape The Fate" on a creepy cut that combines fizzing hi-hats and wonky ambient melodies, with drum programming and musical touches borrowed from EBM and industrial

Alex Coulton - "Grande Swing"
Youandewan - "Faith (For Jacob)"
Review: Founded back in 2007, London imprint 2nd Drop has deftly steered its way through the post dubstep fracture across some twenty 12" releases. Arriving at their fifth & a half anniversary, the label offers up a thrilling snapshot of their enduring diversity on their maiden compilation Future Foundations which arrives across a series of three 12"s (as well as digitally) The excellent Alex Coulton and dedicated up-and-comer Youandewan line up either side of this first 12" with the former's "Grenade Swing" needing little more than some rugged drum machine manipulation and a slightly drunken melodic touch to warm to our affection. On the flip the Leeds based Youandewan offers a slightly more soft edged approach with the delay laden off grid charms of "Faith"

Szare - "Medeleev"
Alex Coulton - "Baraki"
Review: Szare's "Medeleev" rides a seriously good groove with water drop sounds adding to the sense of hypnotic tension, with healthy doeses of junkyard percussion making this a truly killer oddball slice of techno. Flip over for Alex Coulton's "Baraki", which comes in on a moodier tip, sounding like an extension of Jeff Mills' stripped back Something In The Sky series.
