Africa: Live At The Carnegie Hall 1971
  1. Africa (part 1) (13:49)
  2. Africa (part 2) (14:21)
Review: In 1971, a benefit was held at Carnegie Hall for the Intergal Yoga Institute. Amongst the headline attractions was a performance by a hastily assembled "All-Stars" band whose members included Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison and Alice Coltrane. Together they played an epic, half-hour long interpretation of John Coltrane's partially improvised hard-bop and modal masterpiece "Africa". Here that piece gets issued again, with the recording split into two parts to fit on the record. Their version is utterly inspired - a wild, intoxicating and energizing spiritual jazz interpretation in which all players (including two drummers and bassists) are given a chance to shine. In a word: sublime.

  1. Improvisation (Harp Solo) (11:57)
Review: Moochin' About's Record Store Day 2017 offering is something of a treat for jazz fans: a tasty 10" featuring an unreleased Alice Coltrane improvisation, recorded in Poland in 1987, on one side, and a delightful etching of a lotus flower on the other. Musically, the A-side sees Coltrane in harpist mode, delivering a spontaneous workout the rapidly jumps between strummed chords, plucked notes and frequent bursts of twinkling melody. At some points, it's blissful and becalmed, at others fizzes with the same kind of excitement you'd expect from freestyle jazz. At nearly 12 minutes in length it's something of an epic, but will hold your attention throughout.

  3. Rev. King (11:04)
  4. The Sun (4:02)
Review: John and Alice Coltrane's Cosmic Music has long been considered one of spiritual jazz's greatest moments. The album was recorded in 1966 and '68, features amongst its backing players the mighty Pharoah Saunders, and was initially released as an ultra-limited "private press" record by Alice Coltrane following her husband's death. It was, of course, later brought to wider attention by an official Impulse Records release, though this reissue boasts Alice Coltrane's original private press artwork. Variously out-there, discordant, effervescent and hugely atmospheric, tracks like "Lord Help Me To Be" and "Rev. King" still sound groundbreaking and mind-altering all these years on.
