Morphik Uniform (7:22)
Distance (7:34)
Makio (7:57)
Aft Xt (6:10)
Review: Black Merlin aka George Thompson is a veteran producer who makes a debut on the Transmigration sub label Crystal Ceremony and soon shows his class. First up is 'Morphik Uniform' with its wispy pads and supple minimal drums saving as a vehicle for interplanetary travel. 'Distance' is a bumpier ride as the broken kick patterns make you move while heavenly pads bring softness up top. There is a mind-melting Millsian element to 'Makio' than burrows deep into the darkest corners of the cosmos and 'Aft Xt' then ends in a hurry with unrelenting drums bubbling away beneath pulsating synths.

Surface Air (9:26)
Mohican Trance Leopard (10:22)
Surface Air (Wata Igarashi Air remix) (9:24)
Review: Few artists have quite as impressive a track record of delivering trippy, mind-altering electronic music as Black Merlin, whose previous outings on Berceuse Heroique, Pinkman and Island of the Gods, amongst others, have frequently shifted tone stylistically whilst promoting a pleasingly intoxicated sound palette. 'Surface Air', the lead cut from his latest single, is an immersive, mind-mangling gem that adds psychedelic spoken word vocals to a chugging groove, swirling ambient techno chords and pulsing, stabbing electronics. The accompanying 'Wata Igarashi Air Remix' re-imagines it as a weightless, Pete Namlook style 1990s ambient trip, while bonus cut 'Mohican Trance Leopard' is an ultra-deep chunk of ambient techno hypnotism full of echoing electronics, opaque aural textures and locked-in grooves.

Review: Since debuting on Bird Scarer in 2012, George Thompson AKA Black Merlin has delivered some of the most intoxicating, percussive and otherworldly electronic music around, much of it shot through with exotic South East Asian instrumentation, feverish percussion and plenty of atmospheric field recordings. He continues this invigorating approach on the Mod Ik EP, confidently strutting between seriously hallucinatory techno (the heavy and hypnotic title track), mind-mangling ambient acid (the beat-free electronic psychedelia of 'Miea'), dark and foreboding modular intensity ('PK9', whose lead lines and breathless bass are both unusual and inspired) and feverish early morning chuggers ('HL').

DE 2.1 (6:57)
PKL 7 (4:35)
MM5 (8:59)
Review: Over the past couple of years, George Thompson AKA Black Merlin has made some of the most intoxicating, otherworldly electronic music around. The genius of his music lies in the way Thompson fixes creepy, paranoid aural textures and faintly haunting lead lines with rhythmic and instrumental elements inspired by trips to South East Asia and Oceania. He's at it again here, too, wrapping chugging polyrhythms and uncomfortable electronics in chiming, Steve Reich style melodic cycles on brilliant opener "DE 2.1". The track that follows, "PKL", is arguably even more unsettling in its hypnotic melodic approach, twinkling sound palette and mind-bending electronic shifts. Arguably best of all, though, is epic B-side "MM5", a sparse and loopy affair that could well be capable of inducing hallucinations in even the most sober of listeners.

Void (8:49)

R24 (8:02)

Mechanic (6:51)
Mod (7:52)
Review: While George Thompson AKA Black Merlin has released rather a lot of fine material in recent times, we still think that he saves his best for Berceuse Heroique - or at least his darkest and most clandestine aural explorations. For proof, check this inspired double-pack of creepy, pitch-black workouts, which we think contains some of his most potent work to date. There's the triple-time, paranoid deep techno throb of "Void", the faintly threatening dystopian dancefloor shuffle of "Machine", and the clanking, industrial-fired hypnotism of "R24" and "Mechanic". While it tends towards the paranoid and unsettling, Thompson has included one sun-bright shard of light: the blissful, beat-free, intertwined synthesizer lines of closing cut "Mod".

Review: Following up some great tracks on Pinkman, Mannequin and Malka Tuti in recent times, British synth wizard George Thompson returns under the Black Merlin alias - delivering some bold EBM and electro-noir antics for Berlin imprint She's Lost Kontrol. The rusty grind of analogue arpeggios, with minimal rhythms awash in icy trails of reverb plus guttural howls through walls of distortion shall taunt you throughout the sonic contents of the Noi EP. While Thompson sure has a knack for nailing all the hallmarks of early industrial music, he still finds time for the same tribal meditative minimalism found on his Karamika project as heard on the riveting "Noi 2" - one of the EP's highlights.

DEF (7:39)
Ham (9:07)
Oba Enka (7:20)
Review: Given he's previously released some seriously creepy, atmospheric techno on Berceuse Heroique and Pinkman, you'd expect Black Merlin's Mannequin Records debut to be similarly unsettling. That's certainly the case with A-side "DEF", a hypnotic and feverish affair where raw and restless, industrial-inspired riffs rise above paranoid, held-note chords and a locked-in drum track. You'll find more brain-melting, razor-sharp modular motifs on the arguably even more intense and wayward "Oba Enka", while closer "Ham" wraps undulating, acid-style electronic motifs around an altogether fuzzier, looser groove. It sounds like it would be capable of inducing vivid hallucinations in early morning dancers, which in our book is no bad thing.

Review: Inaugural release from Bokhari Records offshoot SORN, for explorations into techno, ambience & crunchy cosmic dirt. SORN takes its name from the alien race in the CS Lewis Space Trilogy. Black Merlin is no stranger to creating music for other worlds and offers two industrial monsters for proper systems and then finishes it off with the beautiful and aptly titled Orbit.
