Genes (7")
Cat: RSDSE 04. Rel: 22 Apr 20
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Genes (Loose Fit) (5:06)
  2. Space Conductor (5:22)
Review: After 3 months holed up in the studio Blair French has emerged to bring you Genes / Space Conductor 7" in support of his forthcoming album The Art Of Us on Rocksteady Disco. The A-side holds the "Loose Fit" mix of "Genes", where Blair channels his inner Tony Allen for an expertly executed modern psychedelic Afrobeat cut featuring a heavyweight cast of Detroit characters including Todd Modes, John Arnold, and Paul Randolph. On the flip is "Space Conductor", a cosmic afro broken beat joint with heavy drums, a huge bassline, kora, and Blair's vocals, exclusively available on this 7" only. Housed in a full color jacket, cut loud to lacquer, and pressed heavy with pride at Archer on Detroit's east side.

Faded By The Sun (limited 12")
Cat: RSD 018. Rel: 01 Jun 20
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Faded By The Sun (12" version) (7:36)
  2. Celebration Ritual (12" version) (6:39)
Review: Some good news: Blair French has finally put the finishing touches to his follow-up to 2014 debut album "Through The Blinds". It's called "The Art Is Us" and will apparently be released in September. To get us in the mood, Rocksteady Disco has decided to offer-up extended versions of two of the LP's most club-ready cuts. A-side "Faded By The Sun" is particularly potent and sees French successfully joining the dots between Afro-house, electrofunk and glassy-eyed new wave synth-pop. It's a curious stylistic fusion, but one that genuinely works. He moves further towards Balearic Afro-disco territory on B-side "Celebration Ritual", where kalimba and marimba motifs skip away atop fast-fingered disco bass and heavily layered tribal percussion.

Deep House
  1. Public Park (6:32)
  2. Spirit Guides (5:20)
  3. Public Beach (5:04)
  4. Public Beach (Stripped version) (5:03)
Review: Detroit based Blair French aka Dial81 is a producer and DJ known for his work in the local groups Cosmic Handshakes, Nois Land and BLKSHRK and has released on labels diverse as Going Good and Claremont 56 - in addition to Amsterdam techno powerhouse Delsin. Since relocating to the Michigan capital Lansing (where he's apparently been collaborating with the city's favourite son: John Beltran) he's also involved in Detroit Electronic Quarterly Magazine. As far as the Public Park EP is concerned, it's all about Afro influenced soul and disco vibes as heard on the sunkissed and spiritual title track, or the deep and dreamy mood lighting of "Spirit Guides". On the flip, strap yourself in for the bass heavy gqom vive of "Public Beach" followed by a tougher Stripped Version.

Afterlife (7")
Cat: RSDSE 03. Rel: 17 Apr 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Pontchartrain - "Afterlife" (4:39)
  2. Blair French - "Pool" (6:00)
Review: It was Memorial Day Weekend 2016, and the sun shined bright over the Detroit River. Pontchartrain stepped up to the decks at the Red Bull stage at Movement Electronic Music Festival donning his infamous "Detroit vs. Itself" t-shirt. His first song through the Rane rotary mixer was a dubplate made specifically for his set: "Afterlife". It's a brilliantly executed balearic daytime disco rework that warrants the praise of summer anthem that it's earning. On the flip is "Pool", an equally sunny slomo beatdown rework from Blair French. It's a delightful blend of cerebral and soulful, and is finally getting a release after being originally championed by Peter Croce on his Le Mellotron Paris set back in early 2018.
