Review: ***B-STOCK: Torn sleeve, product unopened & in excellent condition***

Charlie Bierman returns with his fifth studio album and all is well with the world - The Digital World, that is. Featuring the likes of Singing Fats (RIP), Charli Brix, Fox, Lorna King, Liam Bailey and SP:MC, it's an exercise in how to smash every shade of full vocal d&b without losing a spec of focus from the dancefloor or the underground essence of this music. It's the sound Break has been carving diligently for many years now but honed and refined even more. From the most subtle of soulful pieces (the trembling sounds of 'Lost') to darkest of damagers (the gully grizzler 'Box Clever') this is an exceptional body of work from one of drum & bass music's most prominent benchmark setters.

Keepin' It Raw (Calyx & Teebee remix) (4:03)
Conversations (feat MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss - Breakage remix) (3:45)
Review: Break's 2018 stepper 'Keep in It Raw' gets some special remix treatment here to close down the series. Calyx & Teebee step up first and layer in plenty of menace, with saw tooth synths bringing the sort of textures that are befitting of the tune's name. The crispy, stepping drum breaks are ever on the move and soulful hints come from the buried vocals. ON the flip, Breakage steps up with his take on 'Conversations' feat MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss. It's a tune laced with fizzing static electricity, dub wise vocals and fantastic fills. Turn it up loud.

Whispers In My Ear (Break remix)

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Break - "Whispers In My Ear" (feat MC GQ - Break remix) (4:16)
Break & Total Science - "Dog's Dinner" (Mefjus remix) (4:16)
Review: MC GQ has a pedigree that stretches all the way back to the early jungle nights of AWOL and his presence on this new version of Whispers In My Ear by Break shows he can imprint his personality on a piece of vinyl with a bare minimum of chatting. That's how good he is. Break knows what he's doing too, and his the gnarly electronic harmonics and descending one note bass riff, combined with fresh sounding, spacious breakbeat action, make this the kind of workout that DJs will build their set around dropping. Dog's Dinner with Total Science gets remixed by Mefjus in powerful fashion too, a little more roughneck perhaps than its A-side companion, but a choice selection of ruthlessly applied sonics all the same.

Got A Feelin'

Got A Feelin' (4:31)
Sesame Seeds (5:23)
Review: Symmetry bossman and all-round don Break barges into 2020 with his first fresh produce of the decade and it's not a moment too soon. "Got A Feelin'" weighs in on the groany sewer sounds that are still characterising the genre right now, but done in a subversive, gritty funk way that's unique to him. Flip for some serious sample schooling. Returning to the source of one of jungle's most well-favoured breaks (the clue's in the title) and making new edits using different parts of the record, it's a true breakbeat odyssey with all the subs and detuned stabs a classic jungle hat-tip could ever wish for. Break it down.

Sunset Dub (5:07)
Time To Fly (5:25)
Looking For That (5:16)
Take Me Away (5:14)
Review: Given his impressive track record and length of service, you'd expect Break's latest full-length - his first studio set for three years - to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with the Symmetry Recordings owner gleefully flitting between jazz-funk tinged soulful rollers ("Last Goodbye"), ruffneck revivalist jungle ("Keepin' It Raw", "Jungle Desire"), on-point dancefloor collaborations (Total Science hook-up "Dog's Dinner" and DLR hoe-down "City Slickers"), skanking D&B steppers ("Conversations"), deep and picturesque liquid funk ("The Edge of Time") and frenetic, bass-heavy smashers ("Sunset Dub" and the suitably snappy retro-futurism of "Time To Fly"). It is, then, a pretty impressive, on-point collection of razor-sharp D&B club cuts.

Conversations (feat MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss) (3:49)
Alpha (4:53)
Review: Break's fifth album Another Way is about drop and this is the second teaser of what's to come. First up is "Conversations", a spacious digidub wonder that taps into Break's classic reggae sound (think "Love So True") and is charmed to smithereens by Fats and Watkiss. Meanwhile "Alpha" goes right back to Break's relentless tear up sessions with one of the most brutal basslines he's done in years. And we thought his previous release "Keepin It Raw" was big...

Review: Break: the man, the myth, the monstrously prolific producer finally delivers his third album... And it's every bit as juicy, soulful, savage and unique as you'd expect it to be. Joined by the likes of longstanding vocalist Kyo, old friends DLR and Xtrah and the some of the finest dulcets any MC has ever sung (Fats, naturally), Break's collection treads the fine line between home listening heaven and back-to-back DJ-ready bangers. Highlights? How does 'every track' sound to you. Specifically, though, "Free Your Mind" (with the aforementioned Fats) is up there with "Love So True", "Confidential" stabs and zaps like an updated version of early Bad Company while "Late Exclusives" has amens so finely diced and EQ'd you could power a jet with them. But then what else would you expect from the Symmetry captain?

Free Your Mind (feat Singing Fats) (5:09)
Brand New (5:47)
Review: Break's long-awaited third album is getting closer and closer by the sampler. We don't need to the hype it; the word couplet of Break and album is self-hyping enough to all who know their D&B. We don't even need to hype these tracks; "Free Your Mind" opens with a lush "Love So True" style reggae refrain before dropping into free-flowing rolling gold topped by Fats instantly distinctive harmonies. "Brand New" opens with heavenly chords before dropping into a deliciously rough and angular groove. Classic Break, both of these kill it on all corners. Bring on the album!

Midnite Classic (5:13)
Review: MC Fats and Cleveland Watkiss on one record? Now Break is just showing off! Bonafide soul badness, everything about this record is bliss as both the iconic vocalists harmonise with total messages of unity. "We Are The People" is almost gospel in its intentions while "Midnite Classic" takes us a little deeper into the night with more of Break's classic roughhouse funk foundation. Fresh from soundtracking many of Sun & Bass's parties this year, this is now yours forever. Give it to the people!

Review: This is a perfectly curated 12" that showcases the diversity of Symmetry's focus. "Steam Train" is Break at his most uncompromising; hissing and chugging with elephantine strength, it lives up to its name in every way. "Days Go By" complements this fully with eerie depths, tight, clipped two-steps and Tiiu's enchanting breathy vocals. One for peak time, one of the drive home - Symmetry have your night covered.

Break - "They're Wrong" (Calibre remix)
Break & DLR - "New Design"
Review: Bristol label Symmetry Records have decided to kick-start the New Year in requisite fashion with Symmetry Sessions vol 1, a digital collection featuring contributions from some of the top names in the scene. Label boss Break naturally features quite prominently on the six track release and Symmetry have decided to pull two highlights from the Sessions for this 12" sampler. Given that a remix of Break is a rare thing, it's no surprise that the highly prized Calibre relick of "They're Wrong" lines the A Side, rolling effortlessly towards the run out groove in a fashion that Calibre does so well. Face down and Break teams up with the gifted and blessed DLR for "New Design" which is a fine slab of dark tech step.

Break - "Condenser"
Emperor - "Network"
Review: Drum & bass don Break comes through with the 11th release on his own Symmetry imprint, splitting duties with newcomer Emperor on the crucial double "A Condensor/Network". Calling shotgun, Break drops a perfect example of why he's so revered in the current climate when the epic "Condensor" is in full flow - few other producers out there possess the craft to make a track with such bewitching levels of detail to the drum textures and deviant strains of bass that snake forth with dark intent. Complementing this, "Network" has Emperor in expansive mood, darkside glitches disturbing the calm of a bristling soundscape and forcing the track into stilted progression, this new name on the scene demonstrating his talent for micro drum edits and low set bass lines.

Break & Kyo - "Give In To Me" (5:18)
Break - "Who Got Da Funk" (4:57)
Review: 10 years of Symmetry - 10 years of Break being an absolute boss. Respected by all sides of the game, his on-point balance of a funk and true grit has united us for over a decade and he's about to drop a brand new full-lengther of his own productions and remixes to celebrate. The two cuts showcase his range and skillish charm perfectly: "Give In To Me" features long-term collaborator Kyo who gives her most powerful soulful vocal over classic Break organs and a heavily swung beat. "Who Got Da Funk" is much sharper and grizzlier with its wasp nest bassline and punctuated two-step. Both prime us for the imminent album.

Break & Kyo - "Simpler Times" (5:01)
Break - "Top Shooter" (6:02)
Review: Five years have passed since Bristol-based beat-chiseller Break last dropped the A-bomb. The whole scene has changed hugely since then, but with his new LP Break is preparing to take us back to the days when only the groove (and some perfectly processed snares) mattered: The Kyo-fronted "Simpler Times" is a barbed soul roller with just the right amount of roughage while "Top Shooter" is a straight up slapper with deep rumbling subs and Break's gritty rhythm signature. Bring on the album!

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

One look at who's involved here should raise any drum and bass head's eyebrows. All genre A-listers, it's one of those release schedule entries that's guaranteed to get everyone excited, and thankfully the pudding is just as tasty as those ingredients. Break & Kyo lead the charge with 'Past North', a summertime anthem-in-the-making opening on acoustic guitar chords that wouldn't sound weird on a Me One record. Definitely one for festivals, boxfresh percussion ensures it fully fires off once the poppier elements temporarily subside. That said, DJ Marky's 'Hard Hands' trumps it for crisp drum work, delivering some typically exotic vibes. Ill Truth and Satl's 'In Your Soul', or at least its Lenzman remix, keeps the sexy and smooth warmth alive, with '3 Way' closing out on a dub-influenced tip courtesy of Total Science and FD.

Break/Need For Mirrors/HLZ - "Atlas Shrugged" (6:54)
Review: If you're not overjoyed by the release of new material from Break, you should have a quiet word with yourself. Yes, the man is a powerhouse and manages to share a seemingly endless supply of his own brand of break-laden tunes year after year; but that don't mean he burns out, it means he fires up. As the title suggests, Break Presents Symmetry Sessions 2 follows the inaugural edition from Symmetry that surfaced earlier this year and features surprising tunes like the foray into minimal desolation from Mako, and a fine collaboration between Break, NFM and HLZ in "Atlas Shrugged". The man himself lays down a killer lead track in the shape of the vicious jazz tech business of "Give It Up".

Kyo & Mikal - "Where I Stand" (4:53)
Kyo & Onemind - "Play To Lose" (6:21)
Review: One of Break's most consistent and striking vocal collaborators, Kyo gets the Symmetry spotlight with this A-list collabo EP. "Who Decides" sparks up the dance with an electrified high voltage sneering bassline and loose percussion that only Break can cook up. "Murder Tonight" is a lot sexier than its title suggests thanks to Kyo's surging tones and Total Science's expert manipulation of the think break. "Where I Stand" sees Kyo teaming up with Mikal for the most stripped back and steppy affair while DLR and Mako's OneMind unit join her for the final, and darkest, chapter of the EP "Play To Lose" where Kyo hits her gutsiest, rawest soul notes. No decision necessary.
