Review: MC GQ has a pedigree that stretches all the way back to the early jungle nights of AWOL and his presence on this new version of Whispers In My Ear by Break shows he can imprint his personality on a piece of vinyl with a bare minimum of chatting. That's how good he is. Break knows what he's doing too, and his the gnarly electronic harmonics and descending one note bass riff, combined with fresh sounding, spacious breakbeat action, make this the kind of workout that DJs will build their set around dropping. Dog's Dinner with Total Science gets remixed by Mefjus in powerful fashion too, a little more roughneck perhaps than its A-side companion, but a choice selection of ruthlessly applied sonics all the same.

Review: Symmetry bossman and all-round don Break barges into 2020 with his first fresh produce of the decade and it's not a moment too soon. "Got A Feelin'" weighs in on the groany sewer sounds that are still characterising the genre right now, but done in a subversive, gritty funk way that's unique to him. Review: Given his impressive track record and length of service, you'd expect Break's latest full-length - his first studio set for three years - to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with the Symmetry Recordings owner gleefully flitting between jazz-funk tinged soulful rollers ("Last Goodbye"), ruffneck revivalist jungle ("Keepin' It Raw", "Jungle Desire"), on-point dancefloor collaborations (Total Science hook-up "Dog's Dinner" and DLR hoe-down "City Slickers"), skanking D&B steppers ("Conversations"), deep and picturesque liquid funk ("The Edge of Time") and frenetic, bass-heavy smashers ("Sunset Dub" and the suitably snappy retro-futurism of "Time To Fly"). We don't need to the hype it; the word couplet of Break and album is self-hyping enough to all who know their D&B. We don't even need to hype these tracks; "Free Your Mind" opens with a lush "Love So True" style reggae refrain before dropping into free-flowing rolling gold topped by Fats instantly distinctive harmonies. "Brand New" opens with heavenly chords before dropping into a deliciously rough and angular groove. Classic Break, both of these kill it on all corners. Bring on the album!

Review: What can we say about Break that hasn't already been said? This man is D&B mythology - every producer name checks, every DJ represents, every soldier on the dancefloor knows that Break equals neck-snapping quality of the highest order. Both tunes on this release are, it goes without saying, superb, but both come from different dark places. "Groove With it" is the stepper you want, "Soldier" is the heavy, bottomed-out, snare-flailing danger zone you need. Drum and bass for the connoisseur who still likes to get messed up when it suits. "Moving On" instantly slaps with its distinctive snare rolls and fuzzy purring bassline. The second those trumpets, flutes and soft key dustings ooze gracefully into the mix, you're putty in Break's hands. Review: Bristol label Symmetry Records have decided to kick-start the New Year in requisite fashion with Symmetry Sessions vol 1, a digital collection featuring contributions from some of the top names in the scene. Label boss Break naturally features quite prominently on the six track release and Symmetry have decided to pull two highlights from the Sessions for this 12" sampler. Given that a remix of Break is a rare thing, it's no surprise that the highly prized Calibre relick of "They're Wrong" lines the A Side, rolling effortlessly towards the run out groove in a fashion that Calibre does so well. Face down and Break teams up with the gifted and blessed DLR for "New Design" which is a fine slab of dark tech step.

Review: Clash of the modern day titans right here as Break and Survival collide for a sizzling workout of glitchy, steppy riddims. As you'd expect from the pair, "Stano" is sharper than a drag queen's put downs and full of interesting sonic twists and turns. Fans of both Symmetry and Dispatch output should go mental for it. Flipwise we find Survival going solo for "Going Over". A deeper, more quintessential rolling affair, check those meaty one-note subs and you'll be all over this. Heavyweight stuff.

Review: The story of Triii continues as Break and Total Science continue to ramp up their new co-lab imprint with two more powerful link-ups. 'Blame You' is all about those warm dubby vibes. Soul stirring vocals and a big old sausage of a bassline; like all of their collaborations, you can hear both acts' sounds so clearly in this. 'Aardvark' follows with even more oomph and ooh-la-la. Review: Break and Total Science first worked together back in 2019, delivering the well-received 'Dog's Dinner'. Here they re-ignite their cross-generational production partnership with a fine two-tracker, which also marks the debut of their new jointly owned label, Triii Audio. Lead cut 'Gunfinger' is particularly potent, with the trio doffing a cap to drum & bass's soundsystem culture roots. The track not only contains pitched-down sections of sampled reggae grooves, but also ragga-jungle era vocal samples, crunchy and retro-futurist breakbeats, and bass so warped and gnarly it may be capable of blowing speaker stacks. Flipside 'Acquiesce' is a moody and punchy affair, with soundman bleeps, echoing vocal snippets, rasping rave noises and creepy chords rising above foreboding bass and blistering beats.

Review: Klute's imperious Commercial Suicide proffer the third double vinyl sampler pack from the excellent label compilation CD that slipped out in the final moments of 2011. Across the 48 inches of wax present there are some exclusive and naturally heavyweight contributions from some of Commercial Suicide's finest artists with Cern, Dose & Teknik teaming up on the opening track "Huntville" with suitably explosive results - not least the nuclear strength bass line that ripples throughout menacingly. Alongside it Break goes all 25th Century tech step on the quite brilliant "Freaks" whilst "Orion" occupies similar space whilst focusing on a more grinding bassline. The ever excellent Calibre ensures that age old adage about best till last is pertinent here with the paranoid steppahs delight of "Student Music" a considered highlight.

An ode to the late 90s Bristol sound, all stripped-back, full of shakers and ludicrously funky, its understated funk worms its way deeper and deeper into your soul on every 16. Review: Sofa Sound make themselves all nice and comfy with this fat slab of wax. Both sides pull serious weight; DLR, Break and Randall's modern day anthem 'Song & Dance' gets the VIP treatment, kicking even more like a funky mule than it did before. Then on the B we have DLR and SCAR member Script get all gouched out and wavy with 'Electronic Heroin'. Previously only available on digital, it nods heavily in the direction of Detroit and Soul;r. We've said it before, we will no doubt say it again; Sofa, so good.

Review: Sit down sounds with stand-up grooves: DLR's Sofa Sounds hits its sophomore stride with two more absolute gems. "Song & Dance" should be known to all by now; heavily rotated on dub for at least six months, this powerhouse collab between DLR, Break and the don Randall is real a quintessential funk jam underpinned with a heavy toxic, sludgy bassline. "Modules" on the flip is suitably darker and techier as Ulterior Motive join the fray resulting in an unrelenting techno-style jam that suddenly opens out into much funkier territories when you least expect it. Sofa, so good.

A chance for the label's artists and friends to stretch their skills and signatures, there's been some really exciting, subversion work throughout the series. Review: One of Break's most consistent and striking vocal collaborators, Kyo gets the Symmetry spotlight with this A-list collabo EP. "Who Decides" sparks up the dance with an electrified high voltage sneering bassline and loose percussion that only Break can cook up. "Murder Tonight" is a lot sexier than its title suggests thanks to Kyo's surging tones and Total Science's expert manipulation of the think break. "Where I Stand" sees Kyo teaming up with Mikal for the most stripped back and steppy affair while DLR and Mako's OneMind unit join her for the final, and darkest, chapter of the EP "Play To Lose" where Kyo hits her gutsiest, rawest soul notes. No decision necessary.
