Review: Clocktower Records reissue Cornel Campbell's enduring rocksteady classic 'Gun Court Law'. Campbell's notorious falsetto is not put on immediate display on this classic, and instead, he lowers his intonation to sing and speak more earnestly of the politics of violence in his native Jamaica. To quote the song, "the only gunman that can stand up strong is the soldier and the policeman"; and while this may at first notice sound like an endorsement of a police state, the more considered listener knows it to be a refusal of the model that the policeman sets up; a refusal to obviate your discontentedness by playing into the hands of the police officer by merely aping him. Riding the infamous 'None Shall Escape The Judgment' riddim by Earl Zero, Campbell's message is clear; none shall escape the judgment of law, whether in relation to arms possession or some other charge, but that doesn't immediately strip a subject of his or her right to work with or around that law; some laws born with an unjust flame, but fighting fire with fire usually only strengthens the first. True to some of Campbell's earliest releases, Campbell's first name is even spelled with one L here - the mark of an authentic reissue if not an honest mistake!

My Baby Just Care For Me (2:46)
Review: During the 1970s, Cornell Campbell made some fantastic records with producer Bunny Lee. 'My Baby Just Care For Me', a favourite amongst the lovers rock-powered 1970s blues party scene in London, is undoubtedly one of their best joint efforts. The riddim is loose and languid, the added piano solos pleasingly expressive and jangling, and Campbell soulful lead vocal tterly beguiling. Chunkier, more dancefloor-friendly roots reggae vibes are the order of the day on flipside cut 'Jah Jah He Morn Ya', where Campbell's vocal improvisation between verses add even more energy to an already heavyweight jam. In a word: essential.
