Love Affair (8:35)
Jigsaw (6:14)
Review: As the majestically matter-or-fact title suggests, this EP sees Cottam swap his dusty drum machines and classic synthesizers for a scalpel and reels of quarter inch tape. The results are as on-point as you'd expect, with the experienced producer delivering two tried and tested reworks. Perhaps the most arresting of the pair is flipside "Jigsaw", a wonderfully percussive rearrangement of a sparse but heavy tribal jam that sounds African in origin. It's little more than drums and a lone vocal, but it works so well. In contrast, A-side "Love Affair" sees him make merry with a deliciously glassy-eyed and celebratory mid-tempo disco jam full of glass-cut strings, punchy horns and seductive female backing vocals.

Lymph Nodes (8:24)
Wall Of Sound (8:40)
Heat Stroke (8:46)
Review: UK slo-mo house purveyor Cottam is back with the seventh edition of his eponymous imprint. Starting off with the woozy and deeply hypnotic groove of "Heat Stroke" (which is perfect for late night mood lighting), he then dives deep into the exotic for the atmospheric and Afro influenced "Lymph Nodes". With its epic tribal drum action it is perfect to cause some bugged out moments on the dancefloor, guaranteed! Finally on the flip is the slow burning and esoteric epic that is "Wall Of Sound" which really lives up to its name. Continuing on the Afro vibe and utilising some sweltering rhythms: this too is sure create some dancefloor drama and is perfect to drop closer to the morning hours.

Escravos De Jo (9:52)
Nana Love Dub (7:45)
Review: Preston's Cottam continues on his winning streak, following up great releases recently on Versatile, his eponymous imprint and the impressive Ruff Draft edits series. Following on in the style of the latter, Ele Records "is dedicated to sourcing and sharing dusty, sample based music inspired by the rich soundscape of early hip hop and house productions." Cottam's trademark sample based house is back on this release. Delving into his box of records to produce some sample heavy cuts, slowed down to a sexy shuffling groove. On the A side is an edit of Dom Um Romao's legendary "Escravos de Jo" from 1976, first popularized by Joe Claussell and Kerri Chandler at the turn of the millennium. On the flip is an edit of Nena Love, a London-based singer of Ghanaian origin most renowned for her 1978 album Disco Documentary: where "I'm In Love" originally appeared. Cottam's edit distilling the groove into is raw element and its real saucy!

A Ruff Draft (7:16)
Review: Ruff Daft returns, and after a various artist EP for number 7, number 8 on the label goes back to the founder, with three new tracks from Cottam
'Washed Out' kicks things off, at the cross roads between Mood Hut & Basic Channel where dub techno sensibilities meet dreamy chords for a delectable deep house track.
'Horns' harks back to Cottam's earliest releases, with an afro-ish horn loop teased out over four minutes until the full loop and bass kick in to devastating effect.
'A Ruff Draft' sees Cottam look back towards his techno roots, with a killer kick drum and raw acid lending an abrasive edge to a well rounded EP of varied styles.

Breaking Through The Pain Barrier (Mantra) (12:21)
Encephalomyelitis Disseminata (11:35)
Review: 2016 marks 20 years since Glibert "Gilb'r" Cohen founded Versatile Records. The Parisian imprint shows no signs of flagging despite its' vintage, and here delivers another eccentric, wildly imaginative 12". This time it's Cottam at the controls, laying down two contrasting cuts. "Breaking Through The Pain Barrier" is woozy and hypnotic, but also makes great use of off-kilter electronics, psychedelic effects and quirky, alien melodies. At times, it feels spooky, at others oddly becalmed (despite its' shuffling, densely programmed rhythms). "Encephalomyelitis Disseminata" sees Cottam explicitly reference the medical condition he was diagnosed with just as he was breaking through. Here he changes the script, basing the action around a bold, rising and falling bassline, stretched-out chords and clicking, slightly wonky percussion. It's deep house, Jim, but not as we know it.

Awakening
Review: Machine Records is the new label from the brains behind the killer Moton operation and has been set up as a platform to release new material from a small group of established artists. Man like Cottam helms the debut transmission and you always know you are in good hands when the unassuming Lancastrian is behind the buttons. A two track 12" in the mould of all good, self respecting records for club play, Harsh Side Effects finds Cottam in unrelenting form with the title track deftly unfolding into a punishing, raw, crunch laden acid techno monster which was broadcasted in Daniel Avery's recent Essential Mix. Complementing this, "Awakenings" steers a pretty narrow path rhythmically with Cottam focusing on some deft atmospheric touches before a gloriously muddy kick drum comes in and takes shit over.

Lost In My Brain Fog (extended outro mix)
A Variation On A Theme
Lost In My Brain Fog (Medicated mix)
Review: Cottam is proud to present the first release on his new label, Ruff Draft. Paul Cottam came to wider attention with a series of limited edition blank-label 12s released from 2009 onwards, showcasing his production talents by re-working afro-beat, neo-soul, funk & hip-hop into deep house burners, but Ruff Draft is all about original tracks, and the first release sees three tracks from the man himself. 'Lost In My Brain Fog' comes in two versions, the super deep original is an ethereal trip of shimmering strings and delayed percussion, but with a kicking distorted thump at the bottom end to still work the floor - a real trip. The Medicated Mix has a mystery vocalist mixing with dub techno chords and jacking percussion for a late night trip to the back room of a dark warehouse. The EP is completed with 'A Variation on a Theme', a gem of a deep house groover with beautiful chords and acid that creeps up and sidles its way behind and around you before pinching your wallet and necking your drink. The first release on Ruff Draft sets a high standard, pressed on 180 gram vinyl and cut loud. Keep a look out for further transmissions in the near future, from Cottam and other artists as they keep it deep and keep it Ruff.

The Long Walk
The Other World
Review: Last seen going on a Dawn Walk for the Audio Parallax label, Preston's finest exponent of pitched down house hypnosis Cottam continues a busy 2013 with The Long Walk 12" for the lesser spotted South Coast based Ample Art Recordings. There's no real deviation from the Cottam template on the title track, as ever it's the way the becapped producer teases out the oozing underbelly of acid textures and orchestral swoops over an extended period so that you don't feel the full weight until they are in full flight and smack you square in the face. Flip over and Cottam changes it up with the Afrobeat blessed jam "The Other World" which the mode adventurous DJs out there will find a joy to spin at +8.

Trouble In The Street
Scientific
Review: Continuing to fuse his love of warm, soulful samples with techno frameworks, Cottam slides over to Sound Of Speed to serve up a no-nonsense three-tracker of high-grade disco heat positioned perfectly left of centre. "Ire-Work" stews a relentless guitar lick into a tumbling drum roll and keeps the techno siren leading the way throughout for a truly tense builder, while "Trouble In The Street" goes in stripped and heavy with a simple drum track and an ice-cold vocal speech for an equally dramatic finish. "Scientific" gets busy with the delay unit for a low-slung dub house cut that echoes into a glorious, strung-out groove.

Neurological Breakdown
Heavy Handed Disco Police
Review: Preston's finest exponent of pitched down house Cottam continues his prolific start to 2013 with the Dawn Walk EP for Audio Parallax. It's quite an appropriate title for the lead track; a casual saunter through looping chords groggy on LFO, with keys to match a cityscape sunrise. From here, Cottam remains in a laidback mood on "Neurological Breakdown", employing reversed sample loops for hints of hypnotica, whilst face down proceedings speed up somewhat; the flurry of siren synths an obvious inspiration to the title of "Heavy Handed Disco Police".

I Remember
Review: Self-proclaimed sub-aquatic acid house producer, Cottam, has found his production time being replaced with nappy changing of late, but has thankfully managed to record this new EP. It's a good thing too as "Relapse" is sumptuously deep, with haunting synthscapes and subtle percussion. The tune is also remixed by Cosmin who lets it fly as a psychedelic trance bird in the sky. Back to Cottam though, whose "I Remember", is a really cool and nasty houser with attitude. Good stuff!

The Long Dark Road
Untitled
Review: Here's something a little different from the always-impressive Cottam. Having dazzled with his murky but quietly uplifting deep house productions, he steps back in time to his early days as a producer of woozy, darkroom techno. According to Cottam's blurb, these two tracks were produced some years back and recently discovered in a dusty corner of his hard drive. "The Long Dark Journey" is particularly good, sounding like a paranoid take on the darker work of Sheffield duo Crooked Man. "Untitled" is slower but no less effective, coming on like a smacked-out trip into some dark, German basement.

Deep Deep Down (Vakula remix)
Twang
Review: A masterful debut on the Aus imprint for Preston's favourite son Cottam, with Deep Deep Down continuing the lineage of thick set mid tempo acid explorations last seen on his Use Of Weapons twelve inch. Sprawling luxuriously across the length of the A Side, the title track builds effortlessly from the spacious grooves and alien chug of the opening moments into a sumptuous array of floating sax, twisting acid lines and forever floating pads. "Deep Deep Down" is a finely judged nine minutes of techno paced at slo mo house speed, and Aus have chosen wisely in the remix department. Step forward Vakula, whose remix is drastically shorter but filled to the brim with the kind of production eccentricities you'd expect from the Ukrainian, completely realigning the feel of the track despite retaining some core elements. Cottam completes this excellent 12" with the quite aptly named "Twang", a seven minute boogie burner that should be viewed as an updated take on the self released twelves upon which he came to fame.

Sunrise Sunset (Hunee remix)
Review: After a superlative entrance into the record label market courtesy of Deep Space Orchestra's Trust Skynet EP, Use Of Weapons maintains the high standards of quality with some muggy, chuggy, druggy beatdown courtesy of man like Cottam. "Sunrise Sunset" slowly unfurls into a mammoth concoction of bouncing acid, deep orchestral flourishes and rich sonic textures over a steadily intoxicating industrial beat - this along with the new Terje is making us pine for the summer festivals! In addition there are remixes from Deep Space Orchestra and the vastly underappreciated Hunee with the former upping the tempo and focusing on expanding the acidic potential and the latter really impressing with a total reimagination that sits somewhere between Berlin and Detroit. Some massive organ and bassline vibes on this remix. A highly recommended twelve inch!

Track 2
Review: Preston's favourite hat wearing deep house producer returns with the fourth instalment of his eponymous vinyl serious. As with all previous excursions onto wax, Cottam does not disappoint, here offering two very different but equally vital club grooves. "Track 1" is characterised by a pulsating acid line which swirls around menacingly as vocal snatches drop in and out like swooping bats, while "Track 2" on the flipside is a Latin-tinged sample based roller, replete with those beefy club drums that have endeared Cottam to the dancefloor since day nought. Unmissable.

Review: A well respected festival on the annual circuit, Gottwood expanded operations in a logical fashion last year with the launch of the Gottwax label. Having issued just the one release so far, Gottwax demonstrate it's all about quality not quantity as a second 12" arrives in honour of the annual Record Store Day shenanigans. Pressed on 'hot pink' vinyl, Gottwax EP2 sees Cottam, Luv Jam, Ruf Dug and Jascha Hagen all invited to showcase their skills at hardware driven productions and the results are diverse and impressive. Hagen calls shotgun and delivers a slow burning synth magnum opus in the shape of "Once I Had Love", whilst Luv Jam bangs his box hard with the delightful house cut "Oiii". Ruf Dug is on fine form with "Chatsubo Special" whilst Cottam channels some mad tribal spirits with the wonderfully off kilter percussion belter "Facing It Head On (Come Hell Or High Water)". This last one is quite something!

Review: Lohouse returns to his own TownHouse Music label alongside Aus Music's Cottam, and the pair are in full house mode. Lohouse comes through with the Detroit piano-led gem ""KIS", followed by the more disco-leaning "Hopeulikeit", a gentle house head-nodder with warm keys and a fuzzy little bassline in its underbelly. On the B side, Cottam is all dust and grit on "All About A Groove Thang", a tune that will surely get rinsed from here to Berlin and one that must sound particularly heavy on the ol' Funktion One.

Lukatron - "Aspect Ratio"
Radiq - "Luv N Pain"
Cottam - "Work It"
Deymare - "So Real"
Review: Quintessentials return to their infrequent Deep Raw & Real series of global house with a typically stellar line up. Musical Freak Luke Solomon revisits his Lukatron pseudonym for some simple, no nonsense jacking business on "Aspect Ratio", little more than multiple layers of percussion and toasty bass patterns from which a spectral machine funk melody steadily emanates. Philpot type Radiq follows with the crisp future funk of "Lovin Pain" which finds its feet as soon as those hi-hats lock into groove with the heavy synth flourishes. On the flip Cottam gives us a taste of what to expect on his forthcoming Aus release with the liquid bump of "Work It" which finds the space to work in a cheeky R&B sample to great effect. Rising Finnish producer Deymare switches down the mood on "So Real", a saunter through slick bottom heavy beatdownisms which only serves to highlight the different shades of house music that characterise this impressive release.

Review: Last seen back in 2009 sporting Quantic & Nostalgia 77 jams across a dinky 7", the elusive Tru Thoughts Black Gold series returns with a third offering detailing what the label has up their sleeve in the coming months. Judging by the three tracks here, the South Coast imprint is getting ready to unleash some rowdiness not least the tantalising prospect of Sleeping' Giantz. Formed of three legends of UK music in Zed Bias, Fallacy and Rodney P, "Badungdeng" is tuff, sub heavy bruk anthem and bodes well for their forthcoming album. Alongside this, The Colonel teams up with veteran spitter MC DRS for the soundbwoy grime flex of "Can I Get Some". Intriguingly Preston's finest Cottam spreads his wares across the expanses of the B Side with the disjointed Martian alien futurism of "Hit The Wall (Frustration)". Those expecting slo mo deepness will be surprised at a track more akin to the music you'd find on a Mathematics release, and to our ears it's quite effing brilliant!

Hayworth is another alias of a well known producer to us Ruff Drafters, here he creates a track with an intro that teases and teases you before the beat drops and things get all sweaty.
