  1. Dissolve (original mix)
  2. Dissolve (Dungeon dub)
  3. Photon Sphere
Review: The Biorhythm experiments continue to impress the Juno review team with their lack for catalogue number protocol and unhinged techno direction, as that killer Sun God release is followed by some more Crystal Maze explorations from Ma Spaventi and G String. The duo is undoubtedly two of Amsterdam's finest exponents of the darker spectrum of edgy, unsettling techno and the Dissolved EP demonstrate their potency together is magnified innumerably. The title track is Crystal Maze at their mood setting finest with the rumbling undercurrent of bass and creeping textures threatening but never actually fully consuming the sparse 909 percussion that drives matter forward. Darkness descends further on the appropriately titled Dungeon Dub of "Dissolved" which wouldn't look out of place on a Milton Bradley release; such is the sense of descending dystopic dread that runs throughout. "Photon Sphere" operates in a similar dread filled mindset, though is much more percussively inclined.

Review: Formed of Italian producer Ma Spaventi and Dutchman G-String aka Gijs Poortman, whose releases for the likes of M>O>S and Echovolt have provided some of Holland's most interesting deep techno output, Crystal Maze arrive on aDepth Audio with their debut album, Enter The Maze. With only two 12? releases to their name, a full album of Crsytal Maze material is an ambitious statement from the pair, but one that sees Spaventi and Poortman continue to develop the Crystal Maze sound which has been characterised a decidedly dark edged manipulation of analogue techno. Across ten tracks the duo display a wide variety of sounds and influences; "Slow Swirl" sounds like Drexciya taken down to a lumbering, mid-tempo groove, "Indian Tape" combines rubbery, ghetto house textures with swelling deep house chords, "Mirrors Chamber" comes across like the sub aquatic dub techno of Porter Ricks, while "Dr Claw" creates a low slung, warped vision of Detroit techno's first wave. An ambitious album, yes - but one that more than succeeds.

Deep House
  1. Decay
  2. XR84
  3. Orchidea Nera
Review: While it would be nice to think that this EP of melodic analogue techno and shuffling deep house was the work of hyperactive British eccentric Richard O'Brien (less so the irritating Ed Tudor-Pole), Crystal Maze is in fact Amsterdam-based duo G-string and Marco Antonio Spaventi. Having previously impressed with releases on aDepth Audio and Bio Rhythm, they now find themselves on Greek imprint Echovolt, a label famed for the depth and variety of their analogue explorations. All three tracks ripple with feverish humidity, from the Mood Hut/Future Times-ish tropical pagan shuffle of "Orchidea Nera" (think Confused House meets the Belleville Three) and sumptuous "DECAY", to the apocalyptic, droning pulse of "XR84".

  3. Echo 106 - "100M Splutter" (5:56)
  4. The Pulse Projects - "Grounds" (6:10)
Review: Since launching in 2013, London's Brokntoys imprint has released a number of fine EPs of mutant electro from the likes of Scape One, Rutherford and Marco Bernadi. Here, they drop a second split EP featuring similarly minded tracks from a variety of obscure artists. Crystal Maze kicks things off with the foreboding electronics, off-kilter techno rhythms and mind-melting acid lines of "Crossroad Blues", before Desz Williams goes in hard with the fiery electro beats, booming bottom end and eyes-closed chords of "Hand On Mouth". Flip for the alien-sounding, sci-fi techno pulse of Echo 106's brilliantly atmospheric "100m Splutter", and the distorted intelligent techno-meets-electro madness of The Pulse Projects' "Grounds".

  4. Crystal Maze - "Cow Needs A Bell"
  5. Orgue Electronique - "Halcyon"
Review: For the Dub techno curious, Dutch imprint Field Recordings makes a perfect starting point for discovering fresh and forward thinking ambient and dub techno. As per usual Field 09 is a various artist sampler, featuring cuts from Crystal Maze and Creme Organization's Orgue Electronique, as well as four piece collective ESHU and Dutch dub techno purveyor Ohrwert's second submissions to the label. After an ambient and credit less intro, Ohrwert opens the EP with a wispy and dreamlike stroll through wavey textures, whereas ESHU employs Burial sounding beats and spacious atmospherics. Crystal Maze's "Cow Needs A Bell" shrouds itself in a electro eeriness only to be lightened by Orgue Electronique's synth heavy "Halcyon".
