  4. Oscar Mulero - "Drops" (5:51)
Review: DVS1's Mistress imprint acts as a side label to his main label Hush and is focused just as much on house as it is techno and everything in between. Upon first glance, it's pretty evident that these are some fairly austere techno tools for the second edition in his Mistress Special Release - why else rein in Madrid's master mentalist Oscar Mulero for the bleak, tunnel vision of "Drops". Border One (Form & Function/Invites Choice) appears with the chime-driven hypnotism of "Curve" which just so happened to appear on the label head honcho's recent Fabric mix, and Spaniard Maan (more commonly known as Psyk) serves up some rather Robert Hood sounding bleep minimalism on "Doubt".

Review: Release number three on Mistress Recordings arrives and it's clear DVS1's curatorial hand is helping to craft an open ended music policy for the label that touches all corners of the dancefloor and beyond. Given that Marquis Hawkes adopted the Juxta Position guise to inaugurate the label, it's tempting to suggest that Doubt is the work of an established artist working under alias especially given the standard of production here. Lead track "Remember Fono" sounds like STL mixing strange vocal snippets into his defined palette, whilst "Not Before" is probably one of the weirder dub techno tools you will hear this week, with all manner of strange found sounds and vocal harmonies lurking deep beneath. B Side opener "Captain Hours" keeps you guessing as to Doubt's identity thanks to it's UK bass tropes, whilst "Noc" is a supremely grimey techno tool.

  2. Vertigo
Review: Hush offshoot Mistress Recordings launched last October, promising "secret weapons" in a "deep and purist vein". Here, regular contributor and all round man of mystery Doubt drops his third EP for the imprint, a two-track dose of woozy techno hypnotism designed to raise the roof in darkened cellars the world over. "Beauty" surges from the speakers, peppering a tightly coiled techno groove with sparse bleeps, pulsating sub-bass, foreboding chords and off-kilter electric piano. "Vertigo" is an altogether deeper proposition, its spooky chords and clandestine melodies riding a hynpnotic, heads-down rhythm while horror-influenced electronics tumble from the speakers.
