Life's Better With Disco
Cat: ZEDD 12324. Rel: 09 Nov 21

Disco/Reediciones
Firefly - "Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side" (Dave Lee Love Emergency mix) (9:42)
Ruffneck - "The Power - The Rhythm" (Backroom Productions Feel The music mix) (5:17)
Johnny Dynell - "Rhythm Of Love" (Larry Levan Garage dub) (5:33)
Doug Willis - "Doug's Disco Theme" (Doug Disco mix) (7:18)
Review: In its full digital form, Z Records' excellent Life's Better With Disco Comp is an epic 37 tracks deep. Naturally there aren't that many cuts on this sampler 12", but the four on show are undoubtedly amongst the set's many highlights. Boss man Dave Lee kicks things off via a superb classic disco-meets-nu-disco revision of Firefly's 'Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side', before there's a chance to cop an obscure Backroom Productions rework of their early proto-house/garage-house gem (as Ruffneck), 'The Power - The Rhythm'. The mid-'80s fun continues on Larry Levan's vintage remix of Jonny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love' - a killer fusion of dubbed-out synths and drums and Konk style Latin percussion - while Doug Willis' 'Doug's Disco Theme' is a classic disco-house number from Lee under one of his many alternative aliases.

Mike Lindup - "Atlantia" (Dave Lee extended remix) (8:05)
Raw Essence - "Do It Again" (feat Lifford - Lazywax remix) (5:51)
Jungle - "Keep Moving" (Dave Lee Jungle Boogie mix) (6:03)
Doug Willis - "Dougswana" (Emmaculate Afrodisia mix) (8:23)
Review: Dave Lee's Z Records hits the milestone 20th edition of this Attack The Dance floor series. It has always been a reliable outlet for glossy, disco tinged and floor friendly house tunes from some of the genre's most accomplished names. This time out, Dave Lee appears ac couple of times, firstly with the feel good and soul-licked remix of Mike Lindup's 'Atlantia' and then with a boogie mix of Jungle's 'Keep Moving' which comes with a nice dotted funk bassline and big shiny strings. Lazywax and and Emmaculate Afrodisia remix further boost this useful 12".

Harvey Mason - "Groovin' You" (JN Mason Revenge mix) (7:23)
Al McKay Allstars - "Heed The Message" (Joey Negro extended mix) (7:27)
Lakeshore Commission - "Together (Right Now)" (JN Tribute To Randy Muller) (8:40)
Doug Willis - "Risky Biznizz" (Doug Bionic House mix) (6:44)
Review: For the 11th instalment of Z Records' ongoing Attack The Dancefloor series, label boss Dave Lee (AKA Joey Negro, Doug Willis, Lakeshore Commission and many more) has gathered together more certified floor-fillers from his own personal stash of productions and remixes. His tasteful rework of Harvey Mason classic "Groovin' You" - slightly more housey than the original, but making great use of the original's killer instrumentation and vocals - is particularly potent, while the rolling, horn-heavy Extended Version of Al McKay Allstars' "Heed The Message" is a good-time disco-funk treat. Elsewhere, Lakeshore Commission cut "Together (Right Now)" is a heartfelt tribute to Skyy mastermind and bass player supreme Randy Muller, while his Bionic House Mix of Doug Willis cut "Risky Biznizz" is a soaring, grandiose disco-house treat.

In Our Groove Sampler

Funky/Club House
Ricci Benson - "Still In Love" (Micky More & Andy Tee Horns mix) (7:18)
Doug Willis - "Music Speaks Louder Than Words" (Micky More & Andy Tee Piano mix) (6:32)
The Sunburst Band - "Journey To The Sun" (Micky More & Andy Tee Sun mix) (6:47)
Doug Willis - "People Power" (Micky More & Andy Tee Flute mix) (6:18)
Review: Given that they're amongst Europe's most talented house and disco fusionists, prioritising high quality musicianship and arrangements, it's little surprise to discover that Dave Lee has asked them to remix tracks from the Z Records back catalogue. This vinyl sampler features four of the best revisions from the digital collection, which is called 'In Our Groove'. The Italian duo kicks things off with a horn-toting, Chic-inspired revision of Ricci Benson's 'Still In Love', before reaching for addictive sax hooks and bold piano riffs on a hands-aloft house take on Doug Willis classic 'Music Speak Louder Than Words'. Over on the flip, they reach for jazzy guitar solos, jazz-funk bass and life-affirming chords on a stellar Sunburst Band re-rub, before offering up a soulful house-goes-disco tweak of another Doug Willis jam, 'People Power'.

Disco/Reediciones
The O'Jays - "Put Our Heads Together" (Joey Negro Re-Organised Master mix) (8:39)
Doug Willis - "Dancin' 2020" (Joey Negro extended Rebuild) (7:47)
Sunkids - "Rescue Me" (feat Chance - Joey Negro's In Full Swing mix) (7:36)
Double Exposure - "Everyman" (Joey Negro's Salsoul Strut) (7:18)
Review: The latest volume in Z Records' essential "Attack The Dancefloor" 12" series draws together some killer recent rubs by Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro. He first delivers a "Re-Organised Master Mix" of the O'Jays' 80s electrofunk sing-along "Put Our Heads Together", wisely emphasizing the vocals and killer synthesizer motifs, before offering up an "extended rebuild" of his classic Doug Willis cut "Dancin' 2020" that smothers a soaring disco track with spacey synth solos and jaunty pianos. Side B sports an organ-heavy "In Full Swing" remix of Sunkids and Chance's U.S garage classic "Rescue Me", as well a scene-stealing rework of Double Exposure's Salsoul classic "Everyman". While the whole EP is impressive, the latter is particularly inspired.

Doug Willis - "Forever Douglas" (Doug Be Good 2 U mix) (6:00)
Review: British disco veteran Dave Lee's Z Recordings presents Attack of the Dancefloor Vol.19, featuring some quality disco heat. First up on the A side is Prospect Park with a remake of the Cheryl Lynn classic "Shake It Up Tonight" on which the label chief himself serves up a Disco Reshake, followed by Wipe The Needle who get super lo-slung on the deep disco cut "On Time" (feat Sacha Willamson - WTN 4x4 mix). Over on the flipside, Amsterdam's dynamite duo Dam Swindle get deep down and dirty on a rework of Lee's own classic from way back "Garden Of Love".

Review: Z Records boss man Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee revisits his Doug Willis pseudonym - the 537th of an enviously fruitful career - for the first time in some three years for some suitably refined disco house movements! "Music Speaks Louder Than Words" is dipped in Dave Lee magic, expertly melding a crisp, live sounding house beat with searing disco flourishes and a superlative female vocal lead - Armand and A Trak could learn a thing or two in how to do disco house proper from this! An Accapella version is also on hand for those thinking they could do better. On the flip "Doug Be Good To Me" slips into a sultry 80s groove reminiscent of D Train, whilst Willis gets his arpeggiated pump on for the final euro disco excursion that is "Activated".

Joey Negro Presents 30 Years Of Z Records EP 2
Cat: ZEDD 12291. Rel: 18 Aug 20

Disco/Reediciones
Doug Willis - "Crystal Lover" (6:34)
Joey Negro presents The Sunburst Band - "Only Time Will Tell" (feat Angela Johnson) (5:52)
Mid Air - "Ease Out" (The Revenge edit) (7:31)
Joey Negro - "Do What You Feel" (JN Revival mix) (4:49)
Review: If you're looking for some high-grade, tried-and-tested disco and house fare, we'd strongly advise grabbing this second vinyl sampler celebrating 30 years of Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro's popular Z Records imprint. It begins with the insatiably sweaty disco-house hedonism of Doug Willis's down-low 2014 classic "Crystal Lover" - which, surprisingly, has never appeared on vinyl before in this original mix form - and ends with the Revenge's loopy, sort-after, synth-fired re-edit of Mid Air's early '80s disco-boogie classic "Ease Out". In between you'll find Lee's 2015 "JN Revival Mix" of his classic early '90s U.S garage/soulful house jam "Do What You Feel", and the similarly inclined and deliciously sunny "City Connection Mix" of Lee and the Sunburst Band's Angela Johnson-voiced "Only Time Will Tell". As the old cliche goes, this is "all killer, no filler".

Doug Willis - "The Mighty Douglas" (Doug Godbizniss mix) (6:39)
Roland Wrightangle - "In Your Blood" (feat Darcus - Ron Basejam mix) (7:19)
Jakatta - "American Dream" (Atjazz remix) (7:20)
The Pockets - "Work It Out" (Dave Lee rework) (6:45)
Review: Dave Lee's Z Records continues to fly the flag for disco-tinged house, or house-tinged disco, from new school artists and old-school mainstays. One thing you can be sure of with music n this label is that it will be big, crowd-pleasing tackle that never forgets its roots. There is real religious rapture in the thrilling Doug Godbizniss mix of 'The Mighty Douglas' which gets the EP underway in fine style. After that is a sumptuous, string-laced house classic from Ron Basejam, a lush mix of the wonderfully ethereal 'American Dram' from lounge-y house don Atjazz and classy, hip-swinging vocal house bomb from Dave Lee himself.

Z Factor - "Sounds In The Air" (Soul Purpose remix)
Mistura - "Smile" (feat Kendra Cash - Joey Negro club mix)
Jakatta - "American Dream" (Supernova remix)
Doug Willis - "Don't Want You Back" (J Paul Getto's Doesn't Want Anything To Do With You Anymore mix)
Review: Z Records brought us a little comp here, but little is a bit of an underestimation considering all the tracks are full-on romper stompers! Soul Purpose remixes "Sounds In The Air" by Z Factor, and the dude gives it a real-tight beating, creating a nice, chunky Chicago groove for those hip-shaking moments. Bad boy Joey Negro rerubs "Smile" by Mistura and it's another Illinois affair but this time adding in some pleasing electro stabs. Flip it over and you got the infamous "American Dream" remixed by Supernova: inspirational, moving, lyrical and full o drums! J Paul finishes off in disco-garage mode with his remix of "Don't Want You Back" by Doug Willis - avoid if you don't wanna vibe!
