Gui Boratto - "Half Life" (Patrick Chardronnet mix)
Extrawelt - "Vorsprung Durch Hektik" (Dominik Eulberg mix)
Review: Talented artiste Gui Boratto makes his first outing on German Boxer Recordings alongside Extrawelt with Tuning 08. Gui's "Half Life" comes remixed by Frenchman Patrick Chardonnet; a punchy tech-house track on first appearance, "Half Life" beholds cracking sounds, sweeping brush strokes and big room chord reverb that unfolds into a warm and brooding vibe. On the flip, "Vorsprung Durch Hektik" from Extrawelt gets reworked by exceptional German producer Dominik Eulberg. Riding of a penetrating bass line, Eulberg's plethora of idisyncratic sonic touches are crisp and sharp, warped and arranged to perfection for an eye opening journey.

Cell Sync (6:31)
In The Space Of (6:28)
Review: It's hard to refer to Cocoon without calling it 'mighty' because the now 20+ year old label run by Sven Vath is one of European techno's most prominent. It is synonymous with colourful parties all over the world but still does a great job of serving up fresh sounds too. Two mainstays combine for this one with Defekt and Extrawelt cooking up 'Cell Sync' which is dark and menacing, with rigid drum loops and menacing synths. 'In The Space Of' has more molten synth modulations layered up to a ghoulish effect over slamming drums. It's peak time stuff, for sure.

Off Planet (6:09)
Review: Feel My Bicep has long been a home for big hearted, high impact, festival sized house and techno tunes. Next to serve up the weaponry are the collaborative pair of Defekt and Extrawelt, who kick off with "Field Day". It is a rugged, high speed electro tune with frazzled synths and gritty bass that powers into the cosmos. "Off Planet" is another journey through space, this time on more far sighted chords that have a mournful feel while the well programmed drums keep things pumping. These are likely to get big reactions but do so with a nice sense of style.

Review: Veteran Hamburg duo Extrawelt released another one of their singular 'maximal' style epics in the form of tongue twister 'Jetzt Neu: Alles Wie Fruher' on Gregor Thresher's Break New Soil imprint last year - and now we're treated to the remixes. Rising French producer KMYLE's steely and pitch black rendition is aimed squarely at the peak time dancefloor, while label chief Thresher's version in collaboration with the one-and-only DJ Hell is a more low-key affair. Taking the track in a more deeper and minimal direction is Artrik's perspective over on the flip.

Review: Extrawelt have been at the heart of the Cocoon operation for many years. The dup always manages to explore well outside the lines of the German' label's common remit though and that is the case once more on their latest full length outing, a special edition of their 'Schone Neue Extrawelt record that is presented across six sides of white vinyl. It takes in mind melting mining cuts next to ragged and frazzled techno made by machines, with dubbed out late night cuts and chugging melodic workouts like 'One Tree Hill' also included on what is a truly varied record.

Review: German techno pair Extrawelt are next up on the Dreeaming Awake label and true to the label's form so far, they offer up some hard to define new electronic sounds. 'Gazelle Flip' kicks off with warped techno sounds, bendy bass and slapping hits that are all about making you move. The 720 Degrees version is even more electro styled. Remixing then is the one and only Sebastian Mullaert (who also works under the names Minilogue and Son Kite). His take is a dubbed out and widescreen deep techno roller and then comes a Wa Wu We Prayer version that is all zoned out underwater ambience and slow rhythms.

Automatik Akrobatik (5:38)
Review: Main room techno innovators and long time festival headliners Extrawelt are new singings to the agency arm of Berlin club Watergate. They now serve up some of their maximalist analogue sounds on the label and go dark for the opener. 'Alpha & Oma' is all edgy and suspensory synths that wring out your senses. 'Email Auf Klinke' is dense drumming and industrial atmospheres and then things switch on closer 'Automatik Akrobatik.' The melodies here are lighter and brighter, the drums have more air in them too and the whole thing skips along breezily.

Review: German duo Extrawelt step away from their long time label home of Cocoon here for thew first time. In landing on Further Electronix they venture into more unrestrained musical territory and take full advantage of that across a double album of powerful, hardware based tracks. There is still some big room techno fair, but also more silky breakbeats, futuristic electro and plenty of grey areas in between. The drum programming on 'Ungerade' is an early standout while fans of harder tackle will prefer the manic energy of dystopian banger 'Schutt & Asche.'

Review: Following up the terrific 'Little We Know' EP a mere few weeks ago by Hamburg heroes Extrawelt on Traum Schallplatten, they are right back with this amazing full length on the powerhouse Cocoon imprint.15 years into their careers, it was never their plan to release a 'best of' album, but here it is. Extra Welt Hits is a time capsule drenched in the essence of the act's DNA. Accentuated by newly remastered tracks that serve their ever evolving, clever and out-of-the-box sound. Highlights come in the form of the brooding minimal funk of 'Fernweh', the ethereal and introspective remix of Minilogue's 'The Leopard' and the slinky and hypnotic live version of 'Dark Side Of The Room'.

SEM (6:15)
Review: Longtime main room techno cohorts Extrawelt have sure been around a bit, and later in October will release their latest album Extra Welt Hits on Cocoon. But before that the German pair land on Traum with three more of their muscular and robust analogue workouts. 'Mr Wednesday' is a real teeth clenching ride with a taught baseline snaking beneath slapping hits. 'Little We Know' lightened the mood with airy flute sounds and a more rubbery and warm bassline that does some fine acrobatics. Last of all, 'SEM' gets back to paranoid and dark dystopian techno territory and will keep dancers rooted to the spot.

Argonaut (5:33)
Review: The 110th release from Kompakt Extra comes from Extrawelt, a long-serving electronic band from Hamburg that has previously impressed via albums and singles on Traum Schallplatten, Border Community, Darkroom Dubs and Cocoon Recordings. They naturally hit the ground running with "Pink Panzer", a bustling affair that mixes live drum breakbeats and tough machine percussion with moody, booming bass, creepy strings and evocative, ever-building tech-house electronics. Flipside "Argonaut" is an altogether sleazier and heavier affair full of thrusting, non-stop distorted bass, redlined post-electro drums and all manner of mind-mangling electronic effects. It's effectively the Yang to the A-side's Ying and, like its' predecessor, very good indeed.

Review: Last year, Extrawelt delivered their first album for five years, the wonderfully expansive and on-point Fear of an Extra Planet. Less than 12 months on, they're back with another suitably epic full-length outing, "Unknown". Across three DJ-friendly slabs of wax, the German duo eschews the willful electronic eclecticism that's marked out their recent career in favour of 12 tracks that mine the world of electro for inspiration. While there are subtle nuances and incremental shifts throughout - a little more acid here, a nod to early '90s IDM there, and regular tempo changes throughout - the majority of the album is as spacey, weighty and punchy as you'd expect. It's almost as if Extrawelt has spent the last year exclusively listening to Drexciya records. Superb stuff all told.

Review: It took Extrawelt some five years to get round to recording last year's wonderfully expansive and on-point "Fear of an Extra Planet", a willfully eclectic album that remains a high point of their production career. Happily, "Unknown", their fourth album, didn't take nearly as long to gestate. Interestingly, it's more tightly focused than previous outings, consisting almost entirely of electro workouts. While there are subtle nuances and incremental shifts throughout - a little more acid here, a nod to early '90s IDM there, and regular tempo changes throughout - the majority of the album is as spacey, weighty and punchy as you'd expect. It's almost as if the German duo has spent the last year exclusively listening to Drexciya and Central Processing Unit records. Superb stuff.

Review: Given that they've long been one of techno's busiest live acts, it's perhaps unsurprising that Fear of an Extra Planet is Extrawelt's first album for nearly five years. We'll forgive them for taking their time, though, because it's really rather good. It's largely warm, atmospheric and melodious, flitting between shuffling techno floor fillers, analogue-rich electro, low-slung breakbeat-driven creepiness (see the Brown Album-era Orbital style goodness "Oddification" and "Gentle Venom"), acid-flecked late night throb-jobs ("Silly Idol"), deep space hypnotism ("Fear of an Extra Planet"), James Holden style positivity ("The Friendly Coroner") and surprisingly loose, Giallo-influenced soundtrack fare (excellent closer "2084").

Herz Aus Blech
Zeitfuge
Review: Has melodic German techno found an unlikely new creative muse - Detroit electro? On Raum, the latest release by Extrawelt, aka Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe, this would appear to be the case. While the title track features a rolling, warbling bass and the tantalising melodies that veer from the dark into the dreamy, there is a different dynamic at play on "Herz Aus Blech". There, shuffling 808s and gurgling acid basslines provide the basis for the duo's crystalline melodies to soar and shine. There's a similar approach on "Zeitfuge", where a stripped back rhythm track supports a bouncy electro bassline. Nano Boogie's abstract take on "Zeitfuge" completes this unpredictable release.

Review: Extrawelt rose to prominence during the Kompakt trance boom, but to expect their latest album to merely contain storming, melodic club tunes would do the German duo a disservice. Naturally, there are moments on In Aufruhr where melodic techno reigns, like the epic hooks and fragile rhythms of "Schlusslicht" or the meaner, woozy synths of "Division Dunkel". But of greater interest are the contributions where Extrawelt push the sonic envelope further. "Herz Aus Blech", with its mixture of buzz-saw bass and subtle ivory tinkling, is one such example, while "Die Welt Ist Nicht Genug" and "Dumb Age" see them diversify into stepping, dubby rhythms with resonating sub-bass and shanty effects to the fore. All of this arrives in a bumper 3x12" pack!

Review: While Extrawelt's post-prog house Border Community days are long gone, you can still detect a hint of that early progressive ethos in this second album for Sven Vath's Cocoon imprint. Musically, their various takes on house and techno benefit from a similarly atmospheric approach, even if their aesthetic is more fiercely contemporary and deeply rooted in German club culture. There's certainly something vaguely proggy about the blissful dubbed out sounds of "Schlusslicht" and the melodic dub house of "Die Welt Ist Nacht Schelung". The same can be said for the touchy-feely "Blendwerk", which sounds like classic Orbital reworked by Sasha or John Digweed.

Last Past
Review: Extrawelt produce music that can be described with the word minimal, but they themselves are much more than minimal techno artists. They have been around as "Midimiliz" for years and similar to the Traums artist Minilogue has lead another life producing progressive music on several labels over the years. Playing live is their passion and their recordings are a result of the influences they take in. Extrawelt's debut on the English label Border Community attracted a lot of attention for their music in 2005. It is music composed and produced in a big studio with lots of hardware and a focus on sound that can be a comforting as well as a driving force. This Extrawelt release on Traum features the powerful title track "Doch Doch". It consist of heavy driving baselines, sound stabs and an eruptive, "ailing" melody resulting consequently from the build up.

Review: James Holden needs no introduction, without doubt he is now classed as one of the worlds top producers. His top selling singles "One For You", "Nothing" and the debut release on his own imprint Border Community "A Break In The Clouds", are without doubt some of the standout tracks of the past 4 years. Extrawelt may not be a name already familiar from your teutonic techno collection, but hopefully they'll be taking their place there very soon. For the debut release of new side project Extrawelt, the duo have turned in a pair of melancholy gems which fit in perfectly with the Border Community ethos. The understated epic 'Soopertrack' furthers our minimal trance manifesto set forth in Holden's 'The Sky Was Pink' remix, slowly building to a peak of a subtlety which few producers possess the restraint to achieve. Standing in a complementary symbiotic union is the made-for-soundtrack ambient two step of 'Zu Fuss', throwing down the gauntlet to courageous DJs everywhere to fit this must-be-heard unclassifiable beauty into sets from downtempo through electro to breaks. All this, plus another pair of those tools you all love, and release number eight is in the bag.

Review: Kompakt's Speicher series has always been somewhere to go for more frazzled and textural techno from the Cologne based label. It now arrives at an impressive 121st volume in the form of this split from Extrawelt and 1979. Extrawelt go first with the fizzing synths and dark wave bass of 'Stabilo' designed for maximum impact in the main room. 1979's 'Vulcano' on the flip side is a computer game meltdown with pixelated melodies flashing over a tight and loopy groove. It is controlled chaos and we love it.

Djedjotronic - "NDE" (4:45)
Ste Roberts - "The Rebirth 2.0" (6:44)
Ivna Ji - "Rescape" (6:19)
Review: 20/20 Vision are exiting planet Earth once again with the latest in their perfectly formed series of electro explorations, as Extrawelt leads the charge with an illustrious slice of braindance-tinted funk titled 'Hail The Whale (Coexisting Mix)'. Ste Roberts takes a break from his self-titled label run to offer up a freaky foray into acid-speckled territory, and Ivna Ji gets expressive with a rich palette of synths moving in harmony around a sharp and snappy beat.
