Rocksteady Disco Allstars Vol 1
Cat: RSD 003. Rel: 14 Jul 16

Disco/Reediciones
Pontchartrain - "Rock Your Baby" (7:13)
Lafleur - "1.1" (Peter Croce High & Tight edit) (6:51)
G2S - "Rinky Dink" (5:38)
Pontchartrain - "Gone Home" (7:25)
Review: Peter Croce's Rocksteady Disco hits its stride with its first multi-artist volume. Deep-seeded Detroit curation and sense of groovemanship, each cut has real versatility... Pontchartrain takes on George McCrea's "Rock Your Baby" with cosmic results before chugging our brains out with the rich, clunky "Gone Home", Lafleur and Croces bring out the freaky MFs in us with their slinky space jazz while G2S does that chunky slo-mo Chicago loopy thing with finesse. Rocking.

Love Me Some Friends #2
Cat: MHM 006. Rel: 17 Mar 17

Deep House
Saint Paul - "Saturday In Your Mind" (8:34)
Marc Bianco - "Line 1202" (6:19)
G2S - "Check-O-Matic" (5:21)
Kaffe Creme - "Spy Big Band" (feat Bernie) (5:27)
Review: It would be fair to say that Moonrise Hill Material has fast become one of the most in-demand labels of recent times, with each 12" missive selling out in record time. You'll no doubt have to move fast to acquire a copy of this latest EP, too, primarily because it's really rather good. Saint Paul kicks things off with the pleasingly positive, D-Train sampling thrills of boogie-house pumper "Saturday In Your Mind", before Marco Bianco weighs in with the manipulated horn stabs, rubbery disco bass and stomping drum machine hits of "Line 1202". Flip for the dusty, pleasingly weird, MPC-driven sample-house fuzziness of G2S's "Check-O-Matic", and the wayward jazz-house brilliance of "Spy Big Band" by Kaffe Creme, which is arguably the EP's standout moment.

Dans Les Discos
Cat: DA88 09. Rel: 10 Mar 16

Deep House
Signal ST - "No Fire No Glory" (8:29)
Pascal Viscardi - "Marabout" (Sortilege edit) (7:04)
Nephase - "Hills" (5:55)
G2S - "Fallin' Down" (6:11)
Review: Rennes-based Dance Around 88 has mainly been a vehicle for label head honcho Baptiste Leterte's productions as Ringard but has branched out in recent times to entail the efforts of other artists such as Laroze and Merrick. This 12" compilation features even more promising new talent on the label starting with Signal ST and their track "No Fire No Glory" this is classic deep techno calling to mind the early sounds of Octave One or Psyance. Pascal Visardi gives us "Marabout (Sortiledge edit") which is the kind of tough NYC house grooves indebted to Kerri Chandler: we're really liking this one! On the flip there's "Hills" by Nephase: an excursion through filtered and funky disco house that only the French have a knack for, let's face it! Finally "Fallin' Down" by G2S continues on with the disco vibes on this loopy and functional tool for DJ use only!

In Any Case Records 002
Cat: IAC 002. Rel: 20 Feb 17

Deep House
Tell - "Life Is Rhythm (Life Is Round)" (5:12)
G2S - "Amako" (5:20)
Malouane - "667746" (4:32)
Manuel Nie - "Brasilholzschlaeger" (4:18)
Ibn Sabaa - "Stupid Loop" (1:35)
Review: Following last year's launch release Lyon lotharios In Any Case deliver another easy-vibe serenade with five more deliciously deep grooves from house to hip-hop. The currently unavoidable Tell kick starts with a warm jack that conjures feels on a Parrish level while fellow Lyon artist GS2 gets grainy and choppy with his feather ruffling heads-down session and Malouane takes us deep underwater with a blurry loop mesmeriser. Elsewhere Manuel Nie really jazzes it out with a sparse, break-based intro before splashing into sedate Iz & Diz and style soft jacks and Ibn Sabaa returns to the label to close the show with a deviant wonky cosmic beat session "Stupid Loop". There's nothing stupid about any of this.
