Review: Dolphin is a new collaboration from UK jazz keyboardist Greg Foat and treasured Venetian ambient maestro Gigi Masin. The album was recorded in those strange years of 2021-2022, as both artists pooled their talents into mutual compositions which they then developed and embellished through the thoroughly modern practice of online file exchanges. There was time for some final recording sessions in person at a studio on the Isle Of Wight, where Moses Boyd, Tom Herbert and Siobhan Cosgrove lent their various instrumental talents to some of the pieces and the end result is a gorgeous, expansive trip through elevated musicianship and patient songwriting - a truly exquisite feast for the ears and mind.

Review: Respected UK jazz keyboardist Greg Foat and ambient legend Gigi Masin started piecing together the music for Dolphin during the lockdown years of 2021, developing their collaborative album online before committing to final recording sessions when they were able to convene at the Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle Of Wight. As you might well expected, there's a sumptuous, refined quality to the music the two have conjured up on this release for Strut, taking in mellow jazz and ambient with elevated musicality at the core. With additional instrumental contributions from the likes of Mosesy Boyd, Siobhan Cosgrove and Tom Herbert, it's a richly satisfying listen from beginning to end.

Review: Five years ago, Italian ambient master and "king of chords" (as collaborator Young Marco once called him) composed and recorded a wonderful, piano-led piece to accompany a book of photographs of his beloved home city of Venice. Masin has now re-edited and reworked that piece and stuck it out on vinyl. It's genuinely brilliant and utterly moving, with the former radio DJ's twinkling, slowly unfurling piano solos seemingly drifting above gaseous ambient chords and ghostly sonic textures. It comes accompanied by 'Abandoned Venice (For Harold Budd)', a heartfelt tribute to the late composer that offers an imaginary, late-night or early morning drift around the city's streets. It was recorded during the same period in 2016 and has a wonderfully eerie, melancholic feel.

Review: Once dubbed by Young Marco as "the King of Chords", Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin has yet to make a duff album, or one that's not deliciously warm and loved up for that matter. Predictably he maintains this near perfect record with "Calypso", his first set for R&S Records' downtempo offshoot Apollo. Interestingly, it's perhaps a little more eclectic than you might expect, with cuts clearly influenced by Steve Reich and Jon Hassell (see opener "Calypso" and "How To Disappear In A Kiss") and dusty trip-hop beat-scapes ("Belamore", the jazz-flecked beauty of "Anemone") nestling side by side with fireside-warm ambient luxury ("If", "Your Name Is My Infinite") and pin-sharp synthesizer journeys ("Kalifa Golf Club"). It all adds up to one of Masin's most magical albums yet - and that's saying something.

Review: **Repress** The Music From Memory label was launched by Redlight Records founders Tako Reyenga, Abel Nagenast and Jamie Tiller earlier this year, sporting a proud mantra of "giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance". The focus of attention for Music Of Memory's second release falls on the works of celebrated ambient composer Gigi Masin. Born in Venice, Masin's work has been sampled by the likes of Bjork and To Rococco Rot and his albums attract feverish acclaim, with Wind, Masin's privately pressed debut LP a desired rarity for the only the most well-heeled of second hand collectors. It's from this album and a selection of Masin's other released works that Music From Memory draw from for this stunningly meditative double LP retrospective Talk To The Sea, which also includes a healthy amount of unreleased material.

Review: Until Music From Memory released Talk To The Sea back in 2014, only a handful of crate-diggers had heard of Italian ambient/new age pioneer Gigi Masin. The two-disc retrospective, which featured a mixture of self-released material from the '80s and early '90s, and a handful of previously unreleased tracks, was a runaway success, propelling Masin towards cult status (a fact later emphasized by his Gaussian Curve collaboration with Jonny Nash and Young Marco). Here, the collection gets a worthy re-press. It still sounds as magical as ever, amply demonstrating the Venetian's ability to create enticing, life-affirming mood pieces out of little more than bittersweet chords, drifting brass or woodwind instruments, simple drum machine patterns and blissful synthesizer refrains.

Review: Italian veteran Gigi Masin has had a real renaissance in recent years thanks to the arrival of a public love of go-slow sounds, more chilled festival stages and deep digging record collectors. Here he links with one of the younger stars of the scene in Jonny Nash for a perfectly entitled album, Postcards From Nowhere. It is six tracks of achingly beautiful ambient with Balearic guitar riffs drifting next to sustained synths, gently rippling rhythms and far-sighted melodies. Review: A meeting of minds, here, as new age ambient hero Gigi Masin amd dubbed-out audio explorer Rod Modell join forces for the very first time. It was something of a distant, hands-off collaboration, with each artist reworking an unreleased solo work by the other. Side A's 'Red Hair Girl at Lighthouse Beach' features Modell's characteristically hazy, crackling and deeply immersive interpretation of Masin's work - all bubbly electronics, dense layers of hiss, sparse and minimalistic whispers of ambient dub rhythm and yearning chords. In contrast, 'Summer Morning at Lighthouse Beach' sports Masin's distinct sonic stamp, with sun-up chords and dreamy textures being overlaid with twinkling, slow-motion electric piano solos. It's brilliantly blissful, all told.

Review: Elia Perrone is the man behind Unclear Records while fellow Italian Gigi Masin is known for his ambient work since 1986, namely that reissue on Music From Memory (Talk To The Sea) and his involvement in Gaussian Curve. Starting out with the gloomy modern /ambient vibes of "Stella" things gets a bit more optimistic on "Garden Blues" with its captivating groove situated somewhere between trip-hop and shoegaze, whatever it is: it's quite stunning. On the flip Israeli deep house power duo Juju & Jordash deliver a pumping remix of "Stella" which adds some needed dancefloor dynamic on such a version, while Noro Love Mum's remix of "Garden Blues" injects a party starting deep house vibe into it while still retaining the mesmerising and dreamy elements of the original intact quite superbly.

Review: Both "Corner Song" and "The Flying Man" were first featured on Tempelhof and Gigi Masin's second collaborative album, 2016's arguably overlooked album Tsuki. Both are naturally worthy of a single release, though, as they deserve wider recognition. Both are quietly beautiful, drowsy and hazily picturesque, with gently percussive opener "Corner Song" just edging out the beat-less brilliance of "The Flying Man" - in which Masin delivers a weary and heart-aching vocal - in the "best track" stakes. On the flip you'll find a radical re-interpretation of "Corner Song" by New York producer Jex Opolis, who wraps Tempelhof and Masin's glistening guitars around a wonderfully colourful and tactile Balearic boogie groove.

Review: Gigi Masin's second coming after the wondrous Music From Memory retrospective back in 2014 has been one of contemporary music's most heart-warming stories, with the ever-smiling Venetian embracing new musical endeavours and friends. Alongside the Gaussian Curve album recorded with 'Young' Marco Sterk and Jonny Nash, Masin brought a degree of considered pedigree to the Lifted project on PAN. Review: Some thirteen months on from the release of downtempo duo Templehof's collaboration with ambient pioneer Gigi Masin, Hell Yeah has finally decided to offer up remixes of some of the album's finest moments. Polish duo P'Taki impress with a loose, chugging, pedal steel-flecked version of "Bow Down" that make great use of Masin's Chris Rea style vocals, while Balearic Gabba Sound System reach for the delays and reverbs on a glistening, slightly psychedelic take on the beautiful "Buena Onda". Review: Hailing from Northern Italy, both Tempelhof and Gigi Masin are dutifully prolonging the cosmic era founded by the likes of Beppe Loda throughout the '80s. Disco, glimmers of drone and funk, all wrapped in a sugary indie coating would be the best way to describe this crew's musical output. "Red Venus" is particularly reminiscent of something which could have featured in the infamous Loda mixtapes, where the artists are certainly not afraid to steer away from concrete styles, and instead, weave through different feelings and inspirations. The jazzy feel of "Interstellar Bop" is also particularly seductive, and it simply shows that this in an LP to be heard through and through. On a beach, in a bedroom, or accompanied by a few beers, whatever suits you.
