Review: To mark their 50th release, Brooklyn scalpel fiends Razor-N-Tape has put together a triple-pack of tried-and-tested reworks from some of the scene's heaviest hitters. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

Review: It was probably inevitable that Let's Play House co-founder Jacques Renault would eventually make an appearance on another Brooklyn institution, Razor 'N' Tape. Renault is, of course, a serial re-editor with a string of fine EPs to his name. There's predictably plenty to set the pulse racing across the four tracks, from the jazz guitar-laden disco-funk hedonism of opener "Cold Blooded", to the loose and punchy, horn-heavy warmth of hazy Afro-disco closer "That Sound" (which, thrillingly, includes a tweaked, teased, dubbed and extended percussion break). In between, you'll find the high-tempo disco-pump of "Dream Machine" and the piano-laden funk workout "Get Down".

  1. Love Come Down (8:07)
  2. Movin' On Up (6:26)
  3. Give It To Me (5:31)
  4. Everybody Do It (8:39)
Review: Few artists make modern club sounds that are as stuffed with authenticity and musical charm as Jacques Renault. The studio wizard and musical polyglot comes correct once again here on a new one for Take Away that packs four fantastic punches. "Love Come Down" is the afro opener before "Movin' On Up" gets all disco with its noodling bass and slick riffs. "Give It To Me" then lays down more excellent funk bass and loose limbed percussive patterns that make you wiggle and "Everybody Do It" is the final piece of this most excellent puzzle. For a taste of what it would have been like to party at The Loft back in the day, look no further.
