Waiting Game
Review: Fans of luxurious, bittersweet, grown-up synth-pop rejoice - Junior Boys are back with their first album in six years! The Canadian twosome's music has lost none of its depth and sparkle, with Waiting Game containing the same key ingredients as its predecessors - namely dreamy, warming chords, soft-focus drum machine rhythms, melancholic melodies, occasional guitars and the distinctive, evocative vocals of front man Jeremy Greenspan. It's a formula that rarely fails if truth be told, so it's no surprise to find that Waiting Game is a genuinely strong set. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the simmering, sunset-friendly warmth of the CD-closing title track and the hushed, ultra-deep shuffle of 'Night Walk', where bubbly electronics, woozy pads and lo-fi electronic drums catch the ear.

Review: If you've ever fallen for the mythical Lewis album L'Amour, you'll probably get off on this. First thing's first, the two are very, very different records - Lewis' work is so soft and quiet at times it comes close to no longer existing, but the whole thing has this romantic, skin-on-skin by candlelight, whisper-in-ear quality to it that seems to go straight for the heart and make itself a home right there.

Junior Boys' Waiting Game isn't anything like L'Amour in terms of sounds, but that same sense of getting very close and very personal with what you're listening to, a record that's soon to be your lover, pervades everything here. Certainly more in the opening tracks, 'Night Walk''s warm, spring evening in Miami vibe, 'It Never Occurred To Me' and its strange, staccato use of vocoder'd lyrics and gliding refrains. Electro synth for the bedroom, no less.

Yes (4:25)
Baby Fat (4:34)
Some People Are Crazy (5:10)
Kiss Me All Night (3:59)
Review: Canada's Junior Boys have been running the synth-pop game since the late 90s and, in our eyes, they're as fundamental to the scene as other outfits like Hot Chip or Simian Mobile Disco. They are now made up of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, and this time they return with a follow-up EP to their recent album for Christof Ellinghaus' City Slang. "Yes" is a delightful pseudo-house number with the boys' vocals riding the crest of the wave, and "Baby Fat" feels like a natural progression thanks to its soft house beats and watery lyrics. The B-side features "Some People Are Crazy", a sublime electronica piece with a sunken, moody tone that encapsulates them perfectly as a group, while "Kiss Me All Night" flaps its stuttering beats and sonic waves to a rigged husk of vocals. Bang.

Big Black Coat (album version) (8:48)
Big Black Coat (Robert Hood remix) (7:01)
Review: Matt Didemus and Jeremy Greenspan are back with their first album in five years for City Slang entitled Big Black Coat and this is the remix of the title track issued through Dan Snaith's Jiaolong label. The "Album Version" itself is a sublime and infectious serving of modern synthpop done like only this Canadian duo can. The "Robert Hood Remix" (yes, you've read that correctly!) is definitely the most fierce and club ready rendition the duo have shown us since Marcel Dettmann's terrific remix of "Work" from 2009's Begone Dull Care LP. Mr. Hood's pounding and cyclical hypnotism is unmistakeable as always and he's in fine form here.

You'll Improve Me (Caribou remix)
You'll Improve Me (original version)
You'll Improve Me (Dem 2 remix)
Review: Whilst the return of Junior Boys will always be a welcome sight, especially when they are ploughing the sort of Canadian slant on Down With Prince era Hot Chip demonstrated on "You'll Improve Me", this twelve inch is all about the Caribou remix. This year has seen Dan Snaith deliver countless memorable dancefloor moments under both the established Caribou alias and the more recent Daphni, and this latest effort is right up there with his best. Naturally epic in execution yet organic in it's construction, Caribou's arrangement rises gradually from the glitchy beginnings into a full blown behemoth tinged with 2 step undertones - it essentially sounds like something few other producers would attempt with any degree of success.

Banana Ripple
Review: With strong links to Morgan Geist's Environ imprint and admirers including Caribou/Manitoba man Dan Snaith and Kelley Polar (all three of which lend a hand here), Junior Boys are fast becoming electronic music's premier synth-pop duo of choice. And with good reason; to date, they've yet to release a duff record, and their blissful brand of bittersweet, melancholic pop rarely fails to excite. As you might expect, this fourth full-length is another perfectly formed exercise in gorgeous electronic pop, with Jeremy Greenspan's sweet vocals lighting up dreamlike moments of intense beauty ("Playtime"), smart songs ("Second Chance") and near-anthemic chunks of upbeat dancefloor pop (the brilliant "Banana Ripple").

Banana Ripple (album version)
Banana Ripple (The Field remix)
Review: Canadian synth pop duo Junior Boys are set to release their It's All True album imminently, and as a little teaser they press up one of the singles, "Banana Ripple", onto nice shiny 12". Focused on summer vibes, catchy pop vocals and underlying groove, this will no doubt be a hit amongst dancefloor dwellers and DJs alike. On remix duty is The Field who strip back some of the immediate punch, instead offering a more relaxed re-work. Their shy approach slips marks it out as Juno's pick of the two.

Review: Junior Boys' second long player is their first to be released worldwide on Domino. Unique Canadian electronic pop digital disco. Junior Boys' new album will be available as a double gatefold LP, CD and digital download. Much as Daft Punk paid homage to 10cc and Godley and Creme, Junior Boys pay homage to Kraftwerk, Scritti Politti and "Violator"-era Depeche Mode. New limited single "In The Morning" has been receiving great reactions from clubs, tastemakers, press and radio. Fresh from playing a hugely anticipated sold out show at the Luminaire in London, Junior Boys embark on a series of dates as main support for Hot Chip during their UK tour in October. Radio 1 supporting at this early stage and with features forthcoming in NME, Uncut, DJ, Fact and many others, there appears to be a genuine buzz developing around Junior Boys.

Junior Boys - "Like A Child" (Carl Craig remix)
Blood Orange - "Champagne Coast" (Mike Simonetti remix)
Review: Remixers must jump at the chance to work with a Junior Boys vocal and this time around it's Carl Craig who has caught the bouquet. CC works the "Like A Child" vocal to perfection, pitching it alongside harmonious synths, a body moving bass line and subtle percussion. Mike Simonetti hits up some indie dance vibes in his remix to Blood Orange's "Champagne Coast" as a walking bass line embraces washed-out vocals and shimmering synths.
