Review: Len Lewis first came up in the late 90s recording on-point tech house for the legendary Swag label, and his career enjoyed a solid resurgence when he returned to the production game in 2020. Since then a solid block of releases have come out on all kinds of labels - a trend which keeps up with this class EP for Lolife. 'Your Light' is a suitably sultry late night cut with a few repeating phrases leading a merry dance around the sleek set of drums, almost conjuring a Latin flavour to the groove in the process. Traumer offers something very different with a remix which has fun playing around with 90s tech-trance motifs. 'What's Going On' finds Lewis locking back into his moodier, underground sound with snappy chords pulsing out in a twitchy, uptempo framework which is primed to crossover into the impending Ibiza season with its un-ending oceans of tech-house sessions morning, noon and night.

Funderground Vol 1
Cat: PLNK 001. Rel: 26 Feb 24

Minimal/Tech House
Moray - "Lujuria Universal" (5:23)
Natural Goofy - "You Are Alone" (5:52)
Len Lewis - "The Emperor Strikes Back" (6:18)
Will Vickers - "Arf Tone" (7:09)
Review: Shout out to brand new label Planka that opens its account with the perfect entitled Funderground EP. It's a various artist affair that welcomes some new names (to us) to the scene and first to go and first to impress is Moray. 'Lujuria Universal' is full flavour tech with punchy kicks and driving, fizzing bass to get clubs going. Natural Goofy brings twitchy cosmic unease to his hurried 'You Are Alone' then Len Lewis takes things into more physical realms with the loopy tech and astral basslines of 'The Emperor Strikes Back'. It is left to Will Vickers to close down and he does so with the freewheeling and turbocharged house of 'Arf Tone.'

Dis Chronicles Vol 2 (hand-stamped 12")

Minimal/Tech House
Grant Dell & Richie Littler - "Disco Hit"
Len Lewis - "Illicit" (Grant Dell Up Yer Strasse dub)
Grant Dell - "Fari A Come"
Review: The Repeat label is doing a great service to the culture of real tech house, nodding to that late 90s sound and carrying work from the likes of Jay Tripwire, Eddie Richards and now Grant Dell. The Dis Chronicles series hits part two with some further obscurities from back in the day which sound as relevant now as they were futuristic back then. 'Disco Hit' was a collaborative effort from Dell and Richie Littler, and it's utterly addictive thanks to those cheeky DX7 organ licks, while Dell's 'Up Yer Strasse Dub' of Len Lewis' 'Illicit' is chunky and dubby in equal measure. Dell's own 'Fari A Come' completes the set with a more overt drop into dub territory, sampling a true Jamaican legend and showing how the tech house sound could transplant onto backroom, head-nodding gear in style.
