Baayi (12")
Cat: PN 17. Rel: 19 Mar 13
Deep House
  1. Adesse - "Baayi"
  2. Truss - "Redbrook"
  3. Massimo Di Lena - "You Better Hear"
Review: The ever-correct Prime Numbers series is still going strong, this time bringing together a thoroughly eclectic range of producers to lay down some solid club fodder. Adesse adopts the tenderest approach, bringing a soft African lilt to a subtle arrangement of light drums and poignant chords with the whole A side to drape a deep house opus over. Truss is certainly in no mood to chill on "Redbrook", going for a big room techno flavour that favours rigid beats, acid parps and epic swathes of organ. Massimo Di Lena is on a far more twitchy tip, with a snagging assortment of percussion and some woozy synths that leave one feeling wonderfully dizzy.

Prisma EP (12")
Cat: MAMSW 6. Rel: 13 Feb 14
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Huge N Net
  2. Lost Ones
  3. Note Ignote
  4. Prisma
Review: The label arm of multi-faceted collective Moreaboutmusic returns with its first release of 2014, the Prisma EP from Italian duo Rio Padice and Massimo De Lena. Ever the winning combination, you know what to expect from these founding members of the Early Sounds label; raw house and techno music that touches the soul as well as the feet. There's a subtle sweetness deep in opening track "Huge N Net" apparent in the intermittent dolphin-esque warbling and glistening chords that acts as a neat foil to the toughness of the groove. "Lost Ones" will probably be the cut that DJs return to, and is a highlight of this release along with the crunchy delight that is "Note Ignote".

Modulo RZ EP (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: ROYAL 017. Rel: 30 May 13
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Modulo RZ
  2. The Octave Lord Of Ring Mode
  3. Super Accompaniment
Review: The Modular RZ EP is an excellent rough edged material from Naples pair Rio Padice and Massimo De Lena, founders of the Early Sound Recordings label and well acclimatised to working together as part of The Early Sounds Collective with fellow Neapolitan Leskin. The three tracks here are a perfect fit for Clone's irregular Royal Oak series, nudging themselves nicely in the fuzzy grey zone between house and techno and focusing on a tooly approach that keeps the beats straight whilst they work through a raft of bleep laden, analogue movements. The title track has immediate qualities that will appeal to many, but the rugged charms of "The Octave Lord Of Ring Mode" really stand out for us, with dirt encrusted bassline and semi malfunctioning fx lending the production just the right dash of wrongness.

  1. Truss - "Redbrook" (Fred P reshape)
  2. Massimo Di Lena - "You Better Hear" (XDB remix)
Review: Had it not been for Prime Numbers there's every chance the world would have never seen the unlikely combination of Fred P remixing UK techno maximum Truss. In his remix, Fred P changes the drums to something more rolling and a drapes thick layer of filter over Truss' "Redbrook" - creating something typically deep and ethereal in comparison to the original. XDB supplies a murky, yet silky smooth remix to Massimo Di Lena's "You Better Hear", again taken from the PN17 EP. XDB does away with the original's vocal and makes the gurgle acid line the focus of his remix, mellowing things even further by introducing lighter chords and ambient pads.
