Bay Of Thoughts
Bay Of Thoughts (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: ANCPT 003. Rel: 03 Mar 21

Electro
Aquatronics - "Euphotic Zone" (4:22)
Aquatronics - "Biogenesis" (3:48)
Aquatronics - "Locus" (3:14)
MSRG - "Excursions" (4:20)
MSRG - "Podvodniy Um" (3:45)
MSRG - "Cifraquatic" (4:07)
Review: Analog Concept is going along nicely already and the third entry to its catalogue is a split EP from Fundamental Records associate Aquatronics and Heretic Electro's MSRG. There is a deeply oceanic sound, smoothness to the bass and Drexcyain feel to the electro squiggles of 'Euphotic Zone' that carries on through the equally serene 'Biogenesis' and dreamy 'Locus.' MSRG ups the jack a little but still lays out slick electro visions that look off to the future amidst solar rays and twinkling melodic stars. All six of the tunes are stylish and standout.

Electro
Koova - "Is This Machine Recording" (5:04)
Koova - "Mammal" (5:08)
Koova - "DLD" (5:07)
MSRG - "Bubble07 Getaway" (3:46)
MSRG - "Operator 86" (3:43)
MSRG - "Zazerkalye 22" (4:42)
Review: Koova is head of London Modular Alliance and MSRG has previously realised on this label. Both take care of one side each of this new 12" and mangle synthesizers, modulars and drum machines to alluring effect. The worlds of IDM, electro and techno minimalism are all referenced with 'Is This Machine Recording' making for a dreamy start. 'Mammal' then ups the ante with slick and high speed electro rhythms, and 'DLD' layers up balmy pads and clacking hits. For his part, MSRG keeps it fully electro-funk on 'Bubble07 Getaway,' which for us is the standout.

Deep House
Review: After a few excellent releases on Ballyhoo and Analog Concept, MSRG latest Part Time Hover, is now out for the new Netherlands label, Foreign Tech Division. Fans of classic Detroit electro and techno, as well as deep house affionados, will immediately gravitate to these tracks, with comparions to Drexciya, Carl Craig, Space Dimension Controller and Juan Atkins all valid. Fellow techno and electro producer, Roger Versey offers his guest vocals on three of the songs here, giving them a fun, retro sound, a la Egyptian Lover.

Electro
Dancing Data (3:40)
Keep On Wshn (3:20)
Echosystems (4:17)
Istisu (3:55)
Review: Guga Gusein's MSRG alias has led to some choice EPs on labels like Heretic Electro, Between Places and Analog Concept since 2018, but most of that has come this year. The purple patch continues with a new one on Between Places that offers some super delicate and sleek electro on opener 'Dancing Data.' There is a turbocharged sense of ghetto tech funk to the hyper-driven drums of 'Keep On Wshn' while 'Echosystems' is a balmy, widescreen deep house cut with spaced out ambient pads. The lush and pensive 'Istisu' closes down with more superbly tender electro stylings.

Aquatic Experience

Electro
MSRG - "You Don't Need To Know" (4:30)
MSRG - "Jais" (5:32)
MSRG - "Rak Funk" (3:31)
Reedale Rise - "Languid Bodies" (5:17)
Reedale Rise - "Manifest" (6:26)
Review: For the first release on Electronic Leatherette sub-label Heretic Electro, the Latvian label has chosen to showcase tracks by two artists inspired by the sound world of Detroit deep sea voyagers Drexciya (hence the "Aquatic Experience" title). MRSG handles side A, swimming between the snappy, funk-fuelled "You Don't Need To Know" (all trippy electronics, chunky bass and liquid synth motifs), the deeper and more emotive "Jais" and the melodious warmth of "Rak Funk", which sits somewhere between the previous two tracks sonically speaking. On side B Reedale Rise takes over, first wrapping metallic electronics, drowsy chords and bubbly acid lines around a snappy beat on "Languid Bodies", before offering up the bolder - but still melodically rush-inducing - "Manifest".

Electro
Vessel In Distress - "Transponder"
Franck Kartell - "Sigma Octantis"
MSRG - "Elliptical Wave"
Heinrich Dressel - "Down Upsight"
Review: The Electronic Leatherette label shows its hand straight away with a pointed nod to The Normal and the foundations of Mute Records. Sure enough there's an industrial, new wave and electro fog hanging over the nocturnal transmissions that make up this first release, although it's far from one dimensional throwback music. Vessel In Distress has a chilly sci-fi leaning to its brand of gloomy electro, but that's contrasted by the sprightly robo-funk of Franck Kartell's "Sigma Octantis". MSRG brings the party with the feisty stomp and gnarly synth lines of "Elliptical Wave", and Heinrich Dressel rolls out an evocative night crawler of a track in "Down Upsight", as is his customary style.
