Other Side Of The Sky (7:26)
Other Side Of The Sky (Appleblim remix) (6:17)
Review: Fresh from his excellent ebm-influenced debut album, UK producer Julian 'October' Smith October looks to a more reflective approach. Working with his long-term collaborator and fellow Bristolian Appleblim, he lays down an lurching, acid-soaked bass and jittery drums on "Other Side of the Sky". These elements complement the melodic chord sequence that flutter their way through the arrangement. On the flip side, Appleblim delivers a remix; retaining the mellow chords but replacing the backing with a stepping, dub-wise rhythm, it makes for a gloriously blissed out take on the dance floor-based original version.

Fountains Of Paradise
Review: Schmorsgabord is a new label, and it launches in style with this collaboration between Laurie 'Appleblim' Osborne and Julian 'October' Smith. The release sounds like a perfect meeting of the former's DJ-friendly bass excursions and the latter's tendency towards deep, dubby techno. Indeed, lead track "NY Fizzzzz" perfectly encapsulates this meeting of minds: the beats are tough and DJ-friendly, yet contain a swinging, Applepips-esque feeling that will let the track get noticed amid the deluge of straighter techno and tech-house releases. Up next, the duo focus on a more experimental approach. "Fountains of Paradise" eschews the dance floor, but the deep, brooding chord soundscape is lent some urgency by the shuddering waves of abstract percussion that occasionally break through the ponderous surface. That the label has decided to put its weight behind two different facets of this collaboration ensures that the end product is very tasty.

Arnaldo - "People In The Sand"
Joey Anderson - "One World"
October - "Decompression Chamber"
Leif - "Until Dawn"
Review: It is labels like UntilMyHeartStops that proudly do deep house justice. The fourth EP to come from the UK imprint, and third this year, is a various artist sampler featuring label inaugurator Joey Anderson, who is joined by the best of British; October, Lief and the impressive Arnaldo. The latter opens the EP with something sparse, dubby and lonely in "People In The Sand", while A Side companion Anderson delivers an effervescent and cosmic "One World". October toughens up the EP with his bullish and phase filtered "Decompression Chamber", while the combined classicalism, ambience and slow drums of Lief's "Until Dawn" is reminiscent to Sven Weisemann's music as Joeum.

Hermans & Mr Ho - "Late Night Scuttla (Hard Drizzle)" (5:32)
October & Borai - "So Many Days" (8:04)
Review: The always on-the-money Run Out Run label boomerangs itself back onto our shelves with their seventh release, this time a split effort from a pool of techno juggernauts form around the globe. Label boss Tom Dicicco drops a heavy-loaded master blaster in "16 Reels" - fierce sonics and filtered beats sprawling from every angle - and TX Connect aka Dallas-based producer Gavin Guthrie delivers his usual slice-n-dice approach thanks to an artillery of gritty drum machine beats and bubbly, rolling melodies on "Clouds Like Leopards". On the B-side, there's some Chicago ghetto action from Hermans and Mr Ho on "Late Night Scuttla (Hard Dizzle)", and Bristol's October and Borai team up to make the deep, mystical and dubby sway of "So Many Days".

Dub Fi Borealis
Invisible Serene Space
Review: Bristol's leading exponent of other-worldly house and techno makes the leap to Fred P's Soul People imprint, following a successful turn on Voodoo Down earlier in the year. Here October is turning out a more melancholic strain of his jagged abstractions in keeping with the label's spiritual aesthetic, with "Goddess Is Woman" particularly haunting in its thick swathes of chords. "Dub Fi Borealis" lets a touch more bite into its techy construction, but still the alluring notes abound, before the emotionally sideswiping prowl of "Invisible Serene Space" with its murmuring bassline and loaded strings.

Unstable Phenomenon (Joey Anderson remix)
Unstable Phenomenon (Voodoo Down remix)
Review: Following a pair of various artists EPs featuring the likes of STL, Anton Zap and N'conduit last year, the nascent Voodoo Down label from New York present their first full artist EP from Bristol house producer October. His straight up, yet ever so slightly off kilter take on house makes him an ideal candidate for the label, with "Unstable Phenomenon" combining dubby yet euphoric chords, robust bass and intriguingly sequenced percussion; "Entropy Ends" is even more interesting, locking its looping piano half-uttered vocals samples and Korg M1 stabs into a strange kind of feedback loop. On the flip, the title track is remixed to fine effect by Joey Anderson, who reworks it into a deep, atmospheric jam filled with distant ripples of melody, while Voodoo Down turns in a more rolling, tribal - yet still decidedly abstract - version of "Entropy Ends".

Singularity Jump
Review: After the success of the first release, Tanstaafl returns for their second wax adventure, this time with the musical renegade DJ October at the helm. October has entered a new phase of production for the TANSTAAFL series and has focused himself firmly on a reduced, stripped and effective formula for the floor. His productions are heavy, smoked out narcoleptic dub infused journey's, and his latest 12 offers more or less of the same opaque vibe but with his sights firmly set on the floor, with one foot in the past and the other in the future - drawing from his usual Detroit, NYC and Chicago influences. So we kick off 2012 with a future classic, 'Singularity Jump', which douses you in synthesized Saxophone hooks, chopped vocal samples and a meaty Juno Hip-House inspired bass-line. 'Planet Of Minds' is more of a inner space affair very much inspired by acid and dub. Successfully combining the two, October injects more of an airy feel into the mix and delivers a moody cosmic acid jam that will not fail your dancing feet or tripped-out mind. Definitely one for the later hours... This is going to be an anthem, hands down, so get it before it's gone for good.

Tension Point
String Theory (Legowelt remix)
String Theory (Polarius remix)
Review: Bristol based producer October debuts on Will Saul's Simple Records with an EP backed by two remixes from renowned analogue gear hoarder Danny Wolfers, aka Legowelt. The two original tracks on the EP - "String Theory" and "Tension Point" - impressed Saul to the degree that he decided to revive the Simple imprint, which has been dormant since last February, in order to release them. October (real name Julian Smith) has been producing since 2003 and in that time has released a slew of 12?s on labels such as Immerse, Perspectiv and his own Caravan imprint. In 2011 he paired up with fellow Bristolian Appleblim to provide the first release on Oli Warwick's Schmorgasbord, a conceptual label that encourages collaborations between two producers from different rhythmic disciplines. Wolfers has contributed two remixes of "String Theory", one as Polarius and another under his most well known moniker, Legowelt. Unsurprisingly, the remixes differ considerably in texture and mood; the Legowelt version is considerably more upbeat, with the synths splashed playfully like watercolour strokes upon a canvas. The Polarius version is darker, with menacing acid undertones bubbling away underneath. Highly recommended!

That Placid Track (original mix)
That Placid Track (Ewan Pearson's Mr Meek Goes to Offenbach remix)
Review: The prize for strangest, most musically captivating release of the week goes to October. Otherwise known as Caravan boss Julian Smith, October's "That Placid Track" defies categorisation, as it shifts relentlessly between disco, techno and dubstep and is just one of those tracks that gets better with every listen. Whilst the constant cowbell and flourishes of strings are grounded in disco, the scattergun editing and half step stutter sound like Ramadanman at his most sonically 'intriguing. Caravan score a coup by enlisting Ewan Pearson to remix the track. Straightening out the kinks, Pearson makes the track a more viable entity for the dancefloor, though he's smart enough to retain that satisfying half step crunch.

Review: Caravan boss October returns with another dancefloor hit, "Muscle Memory." Heavily influenced by Detroit techno, the two tracks are also built around broken beat rhythms and dubby basslines. Spatially unique in the arrangement of sounds, both tracks are equally as intriguing when heard from an armchair or the dancefloor.

Las Modelos (Octobers 12 month dub) (9:14)
Review: Brooklyn's Voodoo Down Records, part run by the always excellent L'estasi Dell'oro, has kept close to a few key artists since they're first releases back in 2012, namely Germany's STL and Bristol's October. The latter returns to the label and this time he's joined by the mysterious Voodoo Down himself - an alias we are yet to unmask - with two certified floor-shakers; the first, "Las Modelos", is a chord-heavy, dubwise house thriller with a crunchy yet clean analogue sound, and the flipside sees October himself turn in a masterful dub version of the original, minimizing the chords down to their bare bones and bolstering the low-ends considerably. An effective pair of tunes for the dancefloor.

October - "Galactic Dawn"

Adam Lundberg - "Remember"
Dakini9 - "Daemon"
Review: Previous instalments of Soul People's Earth Tones series have featured the likes of Move D, Fred P and Joey Anderson, and the lineup on this fourth outing more than maintains these standards. October, Aybee, Adam Lundberg and Dakini 9 all feature and contribute house and techno of the deep and sensuous variety. Bristol don October's "Galactic Dawn" is a typically deep piece of cosmically-tinged house with synths wrung out like blankets soaked in space dust, while Aybee's "ATCG" is a classic piece of chord-driven house whose melodic elements are submerged beneath a deep layer of murky atmospherics. Adam Lundberg's "Remember" places breathy vocals over a dubby, brushed groove filled with sub-aquatic sounds, and Dakini9's "Daemon" hits the perfect mid-point between driving techno and a dreamy melodic sensibility.

Nine Tomorrows (6:42)
Review: Boris 'Borai' English has been collaborating with Julian Smith over the past five years, and this record follows on from their Head 4 Phuture record on Brstl last year. The title track is similar to the sound that prevailed on October's debut album; a wiry, insistent rhythm, shot through with an undercurrent of moody bass, provides a cushion for a vocal loop that exudes the paranoia of vintage industrial/ebm acts like Nitzer Ebb. Thundering tribal drums add weight to the track's swagger. "Nine Tomorrows" is a different proposition; more restrained and less oppressive-sounding, at the heart of its understated, metallic rhythm is a melody so frosty and icy, it'll cool even the warmest heart.

Palmarosa
Review: As their slew of recent singles continues, October and Borai emerge on Applepips with yet more essential tackle for broadminded dancefloors. "I Didn't Mean To" finds itself in a compromising position between broken rhythmic trysts and technoid propulsion, all the while off set by achingly beautiful, twinkling pads. It's still a strong floor track, but in a truly hypnotic and uplifting way. "Palmarosa" meanwhile is honed for maximum body response, with a firm undercarriage and sassy saxophone flairs perfect for those feverish moments deep in the heat of the night. Either way you'll find it hard to prise this one out of your bag.

Vital Ital Rub
Review: While October may be the more highly regarded producer, it's clear that the Bristolian has opened the door to new levels of production possibilities since he started working with Borai. A sound that was first hinted at on the debut BRSTL release late last year is further contextualised with an equally good (and vinyl only) release on the fledgling Never Learnt label. Evocative of what's happening in Bristol right now, "Level Abstain" approaches the house template from that uniquely West Country angle, smudging out the lower recesses of a track that is dipped in infinity. Flipside, the duo reaches further into the audio murk on "Vital Ital Rub" which is markedly more restrained in approach and shows October and Borai fully capable of setting a particular mood.

Left Out (vinyl version)
Review: Arriving in limited quantities and with little chance of a digital release, the newly minted BRSTL label launches in fine style. Central to the label is a mission statement to deliver the best house and techno moments Bristol's constantly bubbling music scene has to offer, something that is expertly executed here in dual fashion by October and Borai. There's undeniable warmth to the rich melodics that swell as lead track "Sticky Fingers" progresses which clearly references the Windy City, though the snapping, upright percussive idiosyncrasies are undoubtedly the work of the West Country. "Left Out" is far more claustrophobic, with steam constantly building amidst the off kilter syncopated flex - a drunken swagger of a groove finally emerging as the swampy bass takes effect.

Review: Next year sees Aus boss Will Saul unveil the Closer project, a conduit for his long promised second album that's set for release on K7! and features contributions from the likes of Paul 'Tikiman' St. Hillaire, Scuba, Appleblim, Ewan Pearson and October. The final Aus release of 2012 has Saul collaborating with October, aka TANSTAAFL boss Julian Smith for the first time on "Light Sleeper" which sees Saul on synths and Smith on drums and makes for a pitch perfect distillation of their partnership with the track bristling in a manner similar to an insomnia riddled STL. Kompakt boss Michael Mayer is on remix duty, deftly balancing Saul and Smith's original sonic aspirations with his own creative urges - the results incorporating several broken rhythmic movements without sacrificing the warmth of the original production.
