Placelessness
Cat: SOMA 052LP. Rel: 26 Oct 23

Modern Classical
Placelessness I (18:12)
Placelessness II (20:33)
Review: It's fair to say Placelessness is the work of an Australian experimental supergroup. Oren Ambarchi has been a towering figure of hyper-minimalism since the mid-80s, most notably creating tense and elongated stretches of recordings and performance using guitar tone. Robbie Avenaim is an accomplished experimental drummer, and Chris Abrahams heads up The Necks. That's a very condensed biography for three incredibly accomplished musicians who finally make good on years of live collaborations and criss-crossed pathways to deliver a stunning album which brings their respective qualities into sharp relief, somehow fuller than their solo efforts without losing the vital subtlety and patience which has guided them to greatness.

Review: Ghosted 2, produced by Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werlin, presents a fascinating fusion of various genres–Electronic, Jazz, Folk, World, and Country. However, it's not the amalgamation of styles that captivates but the abstract, experimental nature of their endeavor. This record leans into the boundaries of free improvisation, with a heavy emphasis on texture and atmosphere. The instrumentation is minimal, with delicate drumming that weaves through the soundscape while subtle guitar strums and drones create a hazy, hypnotic ambiance. What sets this apart is its exploration of silence. Long stretches of negative space linger, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the subtle nuances and intricacies of the performance. The result is an album that is as challenging as it is rewarding, inviting multiple listens to unravel its sonic secrets.

Hubris Variation
Cat: BLACKTRUFFLE 024. Rel: 16 Nov 16

Minimal House/Tech House
Hubris Variation (part 1) (14:16)
Hubris Variation (part 2) (13:12)
Review: Given that Ricardo Villalobos was one of a handful of guest producers who featured on Oren Ambarchi's recent Hubris album - a krautrock-influenced minimalist techno exploration that also boasted contributions from Jim O'Rourke and Mark Fell, amongst others - it seems fitting that he's been roped in to provide two new remixes. The Chilean's contribution to the album was largely rhythm-based, and his two lengthy Variations - each stretched across one side of wax - promote undulating, heads-down dancefloor hypnotism above all else. Naturally, his drum programming and use of subtle stylistic shifts is as on-point as ever, with Ambarchi's original textures being manipulated into mind-altering new shapes.

Review: The heavyweight trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi return with their 12th and most epic release to date, a triple LP no less. Documenting the entirety of their final performance at the dearly departed Roppongi home of Tokyo underground institution SuperDeluxe in November 2018, the music spread across these six sides splits the difference between the guitar-bass-drums power trio moves and experiments with novel instrumentation that have defined the trio's decade of working together. Containing some of the most delicate music the three have committed to wax since the gorgeous 12-string acoustic guitar and dulcimer tones of the
only wanting to melt beautifully away album, this wide-ranging release also offers up some of their most blistering free rock performances yet.
