Review: Paten Locke was a true hero of underground US hip-hop, transmitting out of Jacksonville with a distinctive touch which showed off his deep musical knowledge as well as undeniable flair. He lost a battle with cancer in 2019, and since then his Full Plate label have been sifting through his masses of unreleased work to offer up authoritative dedications to a true icon of the DIY method. His beats are stitched together from the most obscure vinyl digs, layered up with blown out drums and then embellished with Locke's dexterous flows and cuts. It's bold and risky, but still hip-hop through and through, with noise-licked instrumental passages that teeter on avant-garde without losing its grip.
