The Uprise (12")

Deep House
  1. The Uprise (3:59)
  2. Ghetto Love (7:58)
  3. That Vibe (6:57)
Review: Longtime Detroit badman Patrice Scott ensures Christmas comes early for all lovers of deep house. This EP on his own Sistrum is a real doozy that opens with the slow and purposeful kicks of 'The Uprise,' a real beatdown gem. 'Ghetto Love' is explores more of his usual realm - cavernous musical depths that encourage your mind to wander and get lost in amongst the wispy pads and curious motifs. Last of all, 'That Vibe' brings a very subtle sense of Motor City party, with soulful chords and upbeat kicks embellished with playful Rhodes work. Timeless stuff for sure.

Deep House
  1. Movin In (6:48)
  2. Come Inside (6:07)
  3. Are You Conscious? (4:07)
Review: Patrice Scott's third and final solo EP of 2018 is packed to the rafters with high-grade material. Perhaps most notable is A-side "Movin In", a fluid, funk-fuelled affair bristling with jazzy electric piano motifs, swinging, New Jersey garage influenced drums, liquid synth bass and some decidedly Larry Heard style musical flourishes. Over on side B, the long-serving Detroiter layers sumptuous jazz-funk synths and jazzy analogue bass over a sweaty deep house beat on "Come Inside", before showcasing his hip-hop style beat-making skills on the beautiful, deep-as-an-ocean head-nodder "Are You Conscious?". In a word: superb.

Odyss Dance
Cat: POEM 005. Rel: 16 Sep 16
Deep House
  1. Odyss Dance (6:43)
  2. People Music (6:52)
  3. People Music (bonus beats) (3:40)
Review: US deep house master Patrice Scott steps out of his own Sistrum Recordings label and lands on the Detroit-laden People Of Earth for a sublime three-track excursion. "Odyss Dance" is a classic Scott joint, a deep and ethereal house experiment that instantly gives off the producer's signature feel of mystique, best described as a 'dubby haze'. "People Music" is a little brighter, a little warmer around the edges, thanks to an uplifting synth riding solo in the upper edges of the mix, and a funky bassline driving the engine beneath. There's also a 'bonus beats' version as a final slice of magic, where Scott adds a layer of tribalistic percussion to an already ritualistic drum pattern. Another Patrice Scott blinder.
