5 Years Frank Music Part 02
  1. Fred P - "Energy Cloud" (7:19)
  2. Iron Curtis - "Operator 123" (live mix) (5:37)
  3. Session Victim - "Got The Juice" (7:06)
  4. Tim Toh - "Hidden Beauty" (5:19)
Review: Johannes Albert's Berlin based imprint Frank Music is on a roll right now. Their new compilation series celebrates five years in business and what a way to celebrate, drafting NYC deep house legend Fred P with the sublime "Energy Cloud" which is one of his best tracks of late in our opinion, Berliner Iron Curtis with the ultra-smooth deepness of "Operater 123" (live mix)" and the epic dancefloor drama "Got The Juice" showcasing Freer and Reilling's typical studio magic as always. The most upbeat offering is by Tim Toh who has previously released on Philpot and Ornaments with "Hidden Beauty" a late noughties style journey in the vein of classic Innervisions, Buzzin Fly or Freerange.

  2. Research Club - "Cafe Iguana" (5:36)
  3. Paula Tepe - "Panamericana" (5:02)
  4. Jad & The - "Deep Dark Grimey Dancefloor Moment" (6:05)
  5. Shy One - "House Party" (4:23)
  6. Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

  9. Robert Oh - "Blush"
Review: Session Victim's Retreat label delivers a heavyweight fifth instalment of the Treats various artist series, opened by the stutter-whistling and good vibes of Jamie Lloyd's "Spiro Hustle". Session Victim's contribution is "Much Too Strong" as it's dope, deep and jammin'. Johannes Albert's provides the calypso funk as does Mr Beatnick, only in a more of an electronic fashion, plus a bit of acid. Quarion brings his signature bleepy arpeggios to Retreat which follows on from Kim Brown's starry "I Am Batman". Iron Curtis, as we knew he would, provides a fuzzy, upbeat "Love Commitment" while Robert Oh ends on a hip hop, downtempo vibe with "Blush". One of this years best various artists releases so far!

Review: The Delusions Of Grandeur label has always been a hotbed for quality deep house, and some of the game's best and brightest have graced its catalogue. Another great thing about the label has been its continuity and ability to think forwards, and this new series entitled Delusions 50 does just that. Here we have Part 1 of the collection, and it features the great Nebraska with "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running", a placid house chiller best served cold, no quick mixing on the fly is allowed, please! Ugly Drums bounces his way through funky bass tones and chugging percussion with "Like Its OK", but the undisputed quality comes from Session Victim and the gorgeous soulful swells of "Came To Be Alive" - boy what a corker!

Review: Given the quality of Session Victim's 2012 debut album, Haunted House of House, expectations are naturally high for this follow-up. Like its' predecessor, See You When You Get There takes a widescreen approach to deep house, with the German duo drawing on a myriad of influences, from jazz ("Hey Stranger"), soundtracks ("Crystal Maze") and evocative downtempo beats (the impeccable title track), to Atmosfear-ish jazz-funk ("The Most Beautiful Divorce In The World") and, most notably, classic Balearica (see the druggy pop of "Hyuwee" and deliciously slow "EOS Place". Best of all, though, is "Never Forget", a glorious blues-house epic laden with smoky vocal samples and thrilling piano motifs.

Review: Dropping their first 12" in a hot minute, Session Victim are back on their regular haunt of Delusions Of Grandeur with a fresh EP of grooves that lays down a marker for their upcoming LP. "Never Forget" revels in hooky piano riffs, Rhodes licks and slices of soulful vocal with that effervescent party energy, while "Stick Together" ploughs a deeper furrow into bass-led realms without losing the sampleadelic approach they have made their name on. "Hyuwee" provides something of a diversion into slow and lazy realms with a more modern kind of vocal turn and some lovely rattling percussion for those lazy, sun-filled days (however far away they might be).

  2. Hyuwee (instrumental)
  3. Tearwiper
Review: Back on the label that gives rise to their strongest material, Session Victim display their ever-maturing grasp of sampleadelic house music over three tracks that will give fans plenty to get excited about. "Pass The Diesel" is all smoky Rhodes chords and shuffling percussion in a truly laconic frame of mind, with blissful fretless bass intervals for extra moments of dreamy reverie. "Hyuwee" is a more emotional offering that focuses on looping piano while the low end calls out the heart-string-tugging harmonies. "Tearwiper" has a less direct approach that lets the musicality of the track hang suspended in the air while the beat plays a more understated role, creating a more contemplative end result.

Review: In addition to issuing their second album See You When You Get There in triple vinyl format, German duo Session Victim have taken the curious decision with Delusions of Grandeur to release the LP across a trilogy of 12" samplers too. Irrespective of their motives, there's no denying each of the four cuts on this second sampler will service any deep house loving dancefloor for months to come, with Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling's refined grasp of the genre resulting in music that positively ruffles with a deep sense of melodic warmth. The contrast between the jazzy "Hey Stranger" and the wholly darker "Make People Dance" also hints at a pleasant development in the Session Victim sound too.

Review: Those cursing the fact they missed out on Session Victim's See You When You Get There album in its premium triple LP format can at least be consoled with the fact the German duo are issuing it as a series of 12" samplers too. This third and final sampler completes the set and is fairly indicative of the widescreen approach to the deep house form shown on the album as a whole, with the wonderful jazz house shuffle of opener "The Most Beautiful Divorce Ever" dovetailing nicely with the piano heavy soundtrack piece "Crystal Maze". At the time See You When You Get There was originally released, the fluttering brilliance of "Under Your Spell" became one of our favourite Session Victim productions and it's lost none of its lustre here.

Review: New on the Delusions of Grandeur label (a sub label of Jimpster's excellent Freerange imprint), Berlin based duo Session Victim have made a gem of an EP that would find a good home in the racks of any nu-disco fans. "The Keyboarder" sounds like something Treasure Fingers would drop, as it's both full of groove and heavy on the silky string stabs. The clean, live sounding drums on "Tomorrow Night" alone are worth getting excited about, underpinning a corking deep rhythm that becomes infectious. Well worth checking out.

Review: Session Victim debut on the Air London imprint with another slice of "suitably hard to nail down and give it a genre" electronic music in the shape of "Right From Wrong". Effortlessly slipping in elements of disco, soul and funk amidst a stripped down rhythmic backing, the track retains a true organic feel as it lollops between different rhythmic sections. The ever present guitar riff that is twisted every which way adds an infectious element which will see the track worm its way into your memory. The flip sees Greek producer Lemos add a dusted quality to the groove, with the clipped drums and somewhat schizophrenic organ sounds making it a tougher proposition than the original.

Review: For their twelfth release the ever classy Delusions Of Grandeur imprint welcome Session Victim back into the fold. The German duo ushered in the New Year with the three classy cuts on Left The Building and they've come correct on this new release. "Million Dollar Feeling" is definitely characterised by the intricate drum programming and complemented by deep pads and a truly soulful vocal sample. The soft moogy undertones that resonate subaqueously in the mix towards the end add that extra touch of quality. 4Lux boss Gerd is called on to remix the track, dipping that vocal sample in infectious delay, straightening the groove for a disco kick and laying down some brilliant neon tinged bass echoes. This remix chugs hard! The pace gets dropped on the B Side, an 11 minute low rider called "Time To Let You Down" which shimmers and reverberates through nine minutes of teasing your ears before the glorious full string heavy sample unfurls.

Review: The Hamburg-Berlin connection returns. Retreat label boss Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling of Giegling fame have been at it as Session Victim for the better part of 10 years and they're still in fine form. The third instalment of Listen To Your Heart features four splendid journeys into the deep. Starting off with the lo-slung disco loops of "Almost Midnight" on the A side, which is followed up by the sun-kissed/slo-mo balearica of "Castle For Sale". On the flip, they pick up the pace once again with "Almost Midnight" which showcases the classic SV sound: deep house from a hip-hop production style of technique which no doubt influenced a new generation of German producers such as Glenn Astro & Max Graef. Finally, recline, relax and light one up to the dubbed out ambient journey that is "Thermal Explorer".

Review: Having finished releasing 12" samplers for their superb sophomore set See You When You Get There, Session Victim return to the Retreat label they co-run with a trio of brand new tracks. There's a brilliantly dense and humid feel to the undulating bass, cowbell-heavy beats and jaunty melodies of opener "Summer Games", which is as sticky, sweaty and life-affirming as the title suggests. Turn over for "Black Cream", a typically jazzy and percussion-heavy slice of blissful deep house that makes great use of an extended, chord-heavy breakdown. Finally, the German duo explores the downtempo side of their trademark sound with "Finderlohn", whose lazy flamenco guitars, chopped-up beats and thickset chords suggests an attempt to capture a Balearic mood.

This is primarily because it gives them a chance to showcase a wider range of grooves, tempos and instrumentations amongst the ear-pleasing dancefloor workouts. Their sunny disposition, noted sample-spotting ability and varied inspirations are all in evidence on the German duo's third full-length excursion. It's a deliciously evocative, enjoyable and mood enhancing affair that smilingly meanders between dreamy jazz-house bliss, Bossa-Balearic fusion, disco-sampling cheeriness, glistening slow jams, Afro-tinged deep house warmth and humid dub riddims (the impeccable "Castle For Sale"). In other words, it's another hugely enjoyable romp packed full of winning moments.

Review: Session Victim return to the Delusions Of Grandeur imprint with their third studio album. Listen To Your Heart is the result of a year of cross-continental scripting which started in their Hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in San Francisco's Room G Studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 LP See You When You Get There. Here is the second of three LP samplers. "Shadows" gets things rolling with a classic Session Victim groove, looped up pads and hooky spoken vocal samples. Next up we have "Unchained" which drops the BPM for a widescreen, slo-mo jam clouded in a smoky haze with jazzy touches, recalling the halcyon days of Pork Recordings. Flipping over we have a brand new LP version of previous single "Up To Rise", another sublime slice of blissed-out house music with a wonderful organic and live sound palette. Echoing Rhodes licks join the lead guitar tune for a Balearic beauty which will be stuck in your head long after the sun sets. Closing this second sampler we have "Over And Over", which winds things down somewhat for an inspired, bass-led roller.

Review: Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling have been pretty quiet since releasing the Two Man House Band E.P this time last year. Whether or not this surprise 12" is a precursor to a new LP or not, the two original tracks showcased here are vintage Session Victim. While many will love the jazzy, sun-kissed deep house positivity of "Up To Rise", it's nowhere near as potent a dancefloor force as "Matching Half", which benefits greatly from looped riffs that doff a sly wink to Fleetwood Mac, killer keys, and some rush-inducing chord progressions. Byron The Aquarius delivers a killer flipside rework of that track, too, which ups the jazziness whilst beefing up the bottom end.

Review: This 12" marks the debut of Session Victim's new label Pen and Paper, an imprint that appears almost ten years to the day from the duo's first 12" release. Title track "Puzzle" is a little darker, woozier and more intense than much of their work, with ricocheting percussion hits, moody chords and jazzy, jammed-out electric piano motifs rising above a locked-in, late night groove. It's accompanied on side A by a deliciously deep, Twin Peaks-goes-deep-house remix by Giegling regular Vril. Iron Curtis takes control on the B-side, serving up two fresh reworks of Puzzle. Choose between the breakbeat-driven, Balearic-minded deep house positivity of the Broken Flowers mix (B1) and the tactile, spacey and synth-heavy bounce of the classic Detroit techno influenced Passagen Mix.

Review: Following a year spent unfurling new material on their own Pen & Paper imprint, Session Victim returns to Delusions of Grandeur with another strong collection of cuts. The German duo first joins forces with Nebraska to layer a tough deep house beat with simmering strings and jammed-out electric piano lines ("Dawn"), before effortlessly joining the dots between deep house, dub house and hazy jazz-funk on "Taste of Life". Pal Iron Curtis lends a hand on the deliciously toasty and loved-up deep house shuffle of "Hear The Sun", while Sven Weisemann arguably steals the show with an ultra-deep, dubby, hypnotic and pleasingly melodious remix of title track "Dawn". It's such a good revision, in fact, that it's worth buying the EP just to have it in your collection.

Review: German pair Session Victim have long been two of house music's more tender and musically minded creators. Their sound is suited to close knit house parties as much as clubs, and works perfectly well at home on a Sunday, too. It makes sense they appear on Night Time Stories with a new record that is superbly smooth and seductive, then. There are gently lilting Balearic grooves, cosy deep house gems, lush instrumentals to listen to on the beach at sundown and jazz beats as good as any coming from the much-hyped South London revival scene. All in all, it makes for their most accomplished record to date.

  11. Glimmer
Review: It's been three years since Session Victim's last album, the rather fine "Listen To Your Heart" on Delusions of Grandeur, so this fourth full-length excursion is definitely well overdue. As you'd expect, the music contained in it is as warm, musically rich and intricately detailed as ever, though there are fewer nods to disco, boogie and Balearica than we've come to expect. Instead, they've delivered a smoky, atmospheric and intoxicating collection of cuts that attractively shimmies between drowsy late night house, dreamy electronica, jazz-fired downtempo jams, dusty breakbeat shufflers and the kind of stoned, ultra-deep fare that used to get showcased on F Communications' ace "Mega Soft Office" compilations back in the 2000s.

  2. Iron Curtis & Leaves - "A & F" (Session Victim 612 remix) (5:40)
  3. Session Victim - "Black Cream" (Quarions White Smoke remix) (6:21)
Review: After a few years of quiet, Ali 'Nebraska' Gibb seems to have refound his creative mojo and is popping up everywhere at the moment. Here he leads the way with a superb, playful refix of Session Victim on the latest Retreat 12", with his self-styled Soho Samba refix of the German duo's "Good Intentions" living up to its title and showing off Gibb's proficiency on the MPC. Session Victim then open the B-side with a remix of Iron Curtis & Leaves before the 12" closes on a Quarion rework of their cut "Black Cream." Both these are fine deep house numbers straight out of the Retreat text book but this 12" is all about that Nebraska remix!!

Wolf EP 18
Wolf EP 18 (12")
Cat: WOLFEP 018. Rel: 01 May 13
Deep House
  1. Session Victim - "Random Blues"
  2. Medlar - "Carry It"
  3. Squarehead - "Be Withou"
  4. Ishmael - "Au Juju"
Review: Big manoeuvres as usual from the Wolf Music crew on their 18th release! Session Victim must rank amongst the most high profile inductees into the Wolf Music series so it makes perfect sense for the German duo to open proceedings with the classic slab of European deepness that is "Random Blues". Worthy of a Raw Cuts release, Session Victim weave dusty drums, sweet vocal intonations and the warmest of basslines together with the resultant laid back track likely to be much played in Croatia over the summer evenings. Complementing this, "Carry It" from Wolf Music regular Medlar adopts a similar hazy house tone whilst the flip holds a pair of newcomers in Squarehead and Ishmael - the latter's cut is particularly special!

If This Is House I Want My Money Back II EP 1
  1. John Talabot - "Leave Me"
  2. Session Victim - "Large Processor"
  3. Jacob Korn & Cuthead aka Kornhead - "Ooohja"
  4. Pional - "Just Passing Through"
Review: If we are to judge the forthcoming If This Is House I Want My Money Back Zwei compilation from Permanent Vacation on the basis of the four tracks on this sampler, then it's likely to be one of our favourite releases this year. That's no surprise, when such luminaries as the Hivern Disc duo of John Talabot and Pional are joined by Jacob Korn and Session Victim. Talabot opens proceedings with the stunning "Leave Me", which is essentially a calling card for his slickness and weaving samples into his own magical spell. If you like house music that never sits still and is constantly threatening to mutate in different directions then "Leave Me" will delight right up to its final dramatic descent into silence. On first listen Session Victim's "Large Professor" seems quite narrow in its ambitions in comparison, but slowly new qualities reveal themselves when the soft vocal sample comes gliding through. This is a sensation that hits you on "Oohja", the collaboration betwixt Jacob Korn and Cuthead, which swiftly strays from the boisterous percussive opening to a sprawling epic tinged with Afro flavours and melodic warmth. Pional drags the tempo down for the final passage as "Just Passing Through" deviates towards a dusted, slightly alien beatdown path that still proves as hypnotic as its predecessors.
