The Evolutions: Phase Two
Cat: VISIO 035. Rel: 23 Sep 20

Deep House
Aleqs Notal - "Midnight" (7:26)
Meftah - "Up From Here" (5:10)
Taelue - "Liberate" (7:20)
Afrikan Sciences - "Bass Reeves" (4:22)
Review: Deep house might not be getting the headlines it did a few years ago, but that actually means those who jumped on the hype train have all alighted once again and now only those truly devoted to the form remain. That means we get high quality EPs like this one from Visions Inc. Aleqs Notal takes us on a spiritual trip littered with toms and jazz-chords to kick things off before Meftah gets more experimental with a broken beat, tripped out keys and rubbery bass all sinking you into a state of trance. For those who like it more straight up, Taelue obliges, and as with all Afrikan Sciences tunes, the closer is a masterfully deep concoction.

Dcee - "Suavecito" (6:00)
Chicagodeep - "Blow Out" (6:31)
DCook - "Comb Over" (6:37)
Taelue - "Razor Line Up" (7:08)
Hakim Murphy - "Finger Wave" (4:43)
Obsolete Music Technology - "High Top Fade" (6:32)
Specter - "Butters Whipped" (6:02)
Isoke - "Soul Glo" (3:10)
Damon Lamar - "Bermuda Triangle" (7:02)
Chicago Skyway - "Edged Out" (6:04)
Review: Perpetual Rhythms is already well-regarded as a bastion of quality amongst contemporary Chicago house labels, and now they've downright sealed the deal with this mammoth compilation from a stellar cast of local cats. There's too many to all list in detail here, so focusing on the highlights, Dcee leads things in with the tumbling cosmic jazz leanings of "Suavecito," Hakim Murphy teases with a spacious and daring exploration in the liminal zone between ambient and house, and Obsolete Music Technology gets invigorating with the bouncy "High Top Fade." Those tracks alone are enough to deserve your hard earned, but there's reams of other excellent forward-facing Windy City jams to sink your teeth into.

Deep House
Dcook - "New Moon Aquarius" (6:27)
Diego Perrisson - "Anomalies Of Time" (6:14)
Taelue - "Love Lost" (6:18)
Chicagodeep - "4th Chamber" (5:51)
Review: It's been 18 months since Fundamental Sounds last touched wax but they're making up for it with a four track homage to the first emperor of China's reincarnating, time-leaping warriors. Every track hits with heritage and the right level of drama. Dcook takes the lead with dream Detroitian tones and textures while Diego Perrisson gets his eerie acid wriggle on while Taelue brings a little sentimentality to the blend with a swooning cut that wouldn't have gone amiss in DJ Gregory's armoury years ago. Finally Chicagodeep returns with a timeless Chicago synth workout laced with strong traces of immersion. Let battle commence.

Halal Prepared Vol 3

Deep House
Havantepe - "Plane Waves"
Ben Boe - "Aqueous Refraction"
Chicago Deep - "Star Struck"
Taelue - "Desolate Dreams"
Review: While their sporadic appearance remains a frustration, it's hard to find fault with Boe Recordings' Halal Prepared series of EPs. This third installment of the series, which lands 12 months after it's' predecessor, contains another quarter of high quality deep house jams. The real highlights - to our ears, at least - are the two tracks that doff a cap to classic Detroit techno, whilst keeping their feet firmly rooted in deep house. Both "Star Struck" by Chicago Deep and Havantepe's "Plane Waves" capture the retro-futurist spirit and stargazing electronics associated with the Motor City perfectly. Elsewhere, keep an eye out for Taelue's "Desolate Dreams", which offers a bittersweet trip into ultra-deep house territory.

Joey Kay - "Perfect Time"
Joey Kay - "Cliff Dwellers" (2013 reprise)
Chicagodeep & Taelue - "Sunday Drive"
Chicagodeep & Taelue - "Sunday Drive" (Dubbyman remix)
Review: You can almost feel the European summer trying to burst free when listening to this 12" from Joey Kay and Chicagodeep & Taelue. Joey Kay's "Perfect Time" sets the tone, pairing gospel vocals and high pitched leads set to sustain, while "Cliff Dwellers" ventures into dubby house territory with looped synth stabs that self propel in motion to phase-tinged hit-hats and claps coated in reverb. Chicagodeep & Taelue open with a Rhodes heavy and chord drowsy "Sunday Drive", which Dubbyman the slows down ten-fold by introducing new keys and a deeply languorous bassline.

Appian - "Hekuba" (6:25)
Alex Danilov - "Acid Love" (5:48)
Taelue - "Pineal Gland" (7:08)
Review: The third installment of 'Silent Movie Sounds' series features music from four producers each delivering a different cut of deep, hypnotic music. Japanese artist Mituo Shiomi is a regular on Simoncino's HotMix Records. He kicks off the VA with a mesmerizing house track. Fresh from his EP on Fina Records, Detroit-based producer Appian contributes a thumping track to this 12". Russian producer Alex Danilov returns to RHR with a love story to acid. Last but not least, the Chicago-based co-owner of Perpetual Rhythms, Nick Marshall aka Taelue closes the EP with a deep and emotional track with a solid kick and smooth synth lines.

Deep House
Specter & Chicagodeep - "Sonar Pulse" (Linkwood edit)
Chicagodeep - "Restless Nights"
Taelue - "Social Anxiety"
Taelue - "Rogue Access Point"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The debut release from US label Perpetual Rhythms comes in the shape of an EP of collaborations and single drops entitled Secret Elements. Firecracker boss Linkwood provides some extra Chi-Town edge to the sombre melodies and science fiction synths of Specter & Chicagodeep's "Sonic Pulse" on his opening edit, whilst Chicagodeep's "Restless Nights" generates a mix of spacey, laid back vibes. The bleepy pulses of Taelue's "Social Anxiety" sounds close to what an Aphex Twin and Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler house collaboration would result in, while the single rimshots and wallowing pads of "Rough Access Point" give the track a distinctly lonesome ambience.

Twin Flame (7:01)
Rage Against Oppression (6:33)
A Bleak Moment (3:19)
The Sunken Place (7:50)
Reflections (6:56)
Review: Perpetual Rhythms continue to offer up fresh variations on the deep house formula with this classy new drop from Taelue. Crooked electro experiment "The 4th Dimension" opens the record up to any number of possibilities, before the forthright pump of "Twin Flame" locks things into a haunting workout. "Rage Against Oppression" takes things in an angrier direction, all ragged and snarling production values with an acid-techno leaning. "A Bleak Moment" provides more space for exploration away from the floor, and then "The Sunken Place" sinks into sinister soundwaves driven by a nervy arpeggio. "Reflections" finishes the EP off with a trip into slow, spaced-out, acidic ambience.

Deep House
Koizumi Yukiko - "526" (5:47)
Taelue - "Saturn Infinite 8" (5:46)
Nemanja Krstic - "Aquae Sulis" (4:31)
Gnork - "Reflection Of A Bird Flying" (6:51)
Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Gnork shuts down with a skittish, stripped back broken beat that makes this another diverse offering.
