Where You Gonna Run To
  1. AJ Franklin & The Inn House Crew - "Where You Gonna Run To" (feat UK Principal & Vin Gordon) (4:15)
  2. AJ Franklin & The Inn House Crew - "Where You Gonna Run To" (feat UK Principal & Vin Gordon - version) (4:17)
Review: The Inn House Crew are well known instrumental reggae producers who have made Room In The Sky their regular home. Their second release this month is a tasty hook up with AJ Franklin, UK Principal and Vin Gordon. "Where You Gonna Run To" is a popping dub fleshed out with cavernous drums and bass that sit together perfectly. Synth details and hits spit out and horns drift to sooth your soul. The effervescing vocals version on the flip injects a dose of warmth to an already steamy cut. Another standout effort from this ever reliable crew.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Earl Sixteen & The Inn House Crew - "Born To Be Free" (3:46)
  2. The Inn House Crew - "The Uproar Riddim" (3:50)
Review: Room in the Key hits cat number 150 with Earl Sixteen & The Inn House Crew coming together on this big new rhythm. Earl "Sixteen" Daley has been doing his do since way back when, and has worked with masters like Lee Scratch Perry. Here he serves up a tale of lockdown and cries to be free, with digital effects and clean, pristine synths lifting spirits next to an upbeat groove. Of course, a dub is include don the flip with extra guitar riffs and natty chords all helping to colour the airwaves.

Madness Badness
  1. Goody Gap & The Inn House Crew - "Madness Badness" (feat Vin Gordon) (4:16)
  2. Goody Gap & The Inn House Crew - "Madness Badness" (feat Vin Gordon - version) (4:19)
Review: The Inn House Crew has been serving up the platters that matter on Room In The Sky long enough to have a firm following by now. Once again they bring rather melancholic vibes to this new one. "Madness Badness" feat. Vin Gordon is a flabby dub with pillow bass and rounded drums, but the trumpets that ring out are beautifully muted and sombre. Flip over for an alternative version that's more amped up and direct for those who are after something more energetic. Whichever side you go for, this is one you will want to add to your collection.

  12. Afras (feat Abdul Tee-Jay) (2:49)
Review: Earlier in the year, the Inn House Crew - a reggae supergroup featuring a wealth of legendary Jamaican players - provided the musical backing on vocalist Winston Ready's excellent Black Pearl album. Here they get a chance to showcase their undisputed musical skills under the watchful eye of producer Lewis Murtagh, on watch should be considered their debut album. It's a hugely entertaining affair that sees them embellish their usual reggae rhythms and basslines with everything from glistening jazz guitar solos and squelchy synthesizer lines, to samba-style acoustic guitars, calypso melodies and Ebo Taylor style solos. As a result, the album is surprisingly stylistically varied, but always rooted in reggae, roots and dub.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. The Roach (feat Jaja Wray) (4:00)
  2. Rathid (feat Vin Gordon) (2:48)
Review: Room In The Sky know how to serve up top notch reggae instrumentals, and few do them better than The Inn House Crew. There's a slight sadness to the forlorn melodica playing that drifts over "The Roach" but the cheerier nature of the chords mean you aren't allowed to wallow for too long, and the jangled drums and riffs are always keen to move you along. Flipside "Rathid" is a more classic roots cut with dusty drums and woodblock hits that bring the warmth.

  9. The Inn House Crew - "Masked" (dub)
Review: Producer Lewis M and all-star reggae studio band The Inn House Crew have enjoyed a very successful 2020, delivering a swathe of must-check releases in their distinctive roots-reggae style. They're at it again here, offering up an EP of vocal and dub cuts inspired by the current global pandemic and based on the Inn House Crew's superb 'The Face Covering Riddim'. Barry Isaac sets the tone with a soulful plea for mask-wearing compliance ('Mask Up'), before regular collaborator Winston Ready re-purposes some of the lyrics from 'Hit The Road Jack' and David Janson delivers a more traditional Rastafari interpretation on 'Give Praise'. Elsewhere, pianist Fish delivers some evocative solos on 'Masked Up Piano', while Lewis M and Ben bell deliver a quartet of weighty 'Masked' dubs.

The Contagious Riddim
  1. Ras Ranger - "Bun Di Devil" (3:26)
  2. The Inn House Crew - "The Contagious Riddim" (3:02)
  3. AJ Franklin - "Solomon" (3:17)
  4. Winston Reedy - "Hip Hip Hooray" (3:14)
Review: Producer Lewis M continues to make the most of his connections with the Inn House Crew, an all-star studio band made up of various veteran Jamaican reggae musicians. Here he presents an EP of "versions" built around the Inn House Crew's 'Contagious Riddim', which is included in a slightly spruced-up form - complete with additional solos and brighter mixing - as the A2 cut. Toaster Ras Ranger is the first to do his thing over the riddim, delivering nearly non-stop flows in his native patois, before AJ Franklin displays the riddim's versatility by turning in a soulful roots number ('Solomon'). Best of all, though, is Winston Reedy's effortlessly warming and soulful version, 'Hip-Hop Hooray'.

World Crisis 2020
  1. Winston Reedy - "World Crisis 2020" (3:26)
  2. The Inn House Crew - "Digilew Riddim" (3:27)
Review: Lewis M is at the controls for all-star studio band the Inn House Crew's latest must-check collaboration with veteran Jamaican vocalist Winston Reedy. He's in fine form on 'World Crisis 2020', a classic, Black Ark-era Lee 'Scratch' Perry style number in which Reedy delivers an accurate if dread-filled commentary on current global events over a superb, retro-futurist dub reggae riddim. That Inn-House crew backing, which is peppered with neat musical details such as jazzy guitar solos and hazy Melodica lines, is showcased in full on the similarly essential, flipside 'Digilew Riddim' version.

Review: Those with a love of reggae should be familiar with the work of Winston Reedy - after all, he's been offering up singles and albums since the early 1970s. His latest album sees him join forces with the Inn House Crew, a specially created band of legendary Jamaican players, to deliver a slick, super-sweet selection of soulful reggae covers and original tracks. Reedy's voice is superb - emotive, rich and soothing - while the backing tracks are warm, sunny and groovy, sitting somewhere between classic 1970s reggae and the digital style that has dominated since the 1980s. It all adds up to a hugely enjoyable and entertaining set that's as summery and smile-inducing as they come.

Review: Winston Ready has been turning out the grooves since the eighties, but now Room in the Sky have got some red hot new material from him in cahoots with The Inn House Crew (who as the title suggest are the label's in house team.) "Created By The Father" is a feel good jaunt with some playful brass leads and a jangling rhythm section. It's earthy and authentic and the flip is a masterful dub that somehow becomes even deeper and more inviting. Once again this label has come correct. Don't sleep.
