Raw Funk EP
  1. The Funk District - "An Evening With El Diablo" (6:31)
  2. Matt Hughes - "Get Down" (5:50)
  3. Cody Currie - "Aquarian Girl" (5:17)
  4. The Owl - "Funky Feelin" (4:12)
  5. ED Wizard & Disco Double Dee - "Slippin" (4:22)
Review: More good value goodness from the Editorial label, one of the few re-edit focused outfits that manage to retain a high level of consistency. The Funk District kicks things off with a fine re-arrangement of an organ and electric piano-focused chunk of sweaty dancefloor soul ("An Evening With El Diablo"), before Matt Hughes gets busy with some elastic slap bass on flash-fried disco-funk revision "Get Down". Elsewhere, Label regulars Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee dip the tempo on the slow and seductive "Slippin", the Owl stomps his way through the P-funk style heaviness of "Funky Feelin" and Cody Currie offers up a hazy sample-house cut rich in jazzy flourishes and warm electric piano chords.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Cosmic Funk (4:54)
  2. Ms Brown (3:52)
  3. We Do It (5:35)
  4. Fresh Groove (4:54)
Review: Cardiology get serious yet again on their fourth outing with The Owl taking a break from his self-titled label to follow up February's Universal Funk with some further sizzling edits. First up is a twist on Mad Dog Fire Department's classic party starter "Cosmic Funk", which gets a tasteful house thump to amp up the dancefloor impact of the track. "Ms Brown" is a big singalong belter with a beat to match, while "We Do It" smooths things out with a slinky vibe that translates well to another forthright 4/4 bump. "Fresh Groove" finishes the record off in a steamy, hazy groove that will take the dancers deeper in, without a doubt.

  1. In The Right Place (4:37)
  2. Fair (4:10)
  3. Be Funky (4:23)
  4. It Ain't What You Got (5:00)
Review: The Owl is back on his own young but impressive label after an outing on Burnski's Cardiology Records that got plenty of props. Here the artist is back to serving up chunky disco and house fusions that have had high profile support already on BBC 6Music. Chunky blues stomper 'In The Right Place' kicks off with long legged and super heavy drums, 'Fair' then takes it back with old school funk breaks and 'Be Funky' stretches its legs with little guitar riffs and muffled bass all designed to work the floor into a lather. 'It Ain't What You Got' then roads out with the most strident and pumping groove of them all.

Review: Given that John Devecchis AKA The Owl decided to call his long-promised debut album Concrete Funk, you'd probably expect something heavy, grey and angular. Yet the music contained within - a mixture of loopy, gently beefed-up revisions and straight re-edits of killer funk, soul, disco and boogie jams - is anything but grey and dull. It's every bit as colourful as his previous EPs, with the many highlights including the bumpin' 'Solar Funk', the squelchy brilliance of Steve Monite re-rub 'Only You Baby', the synth-heavy, Italo-style throb-job 'The Truth', and the soaring, string-drenched disco release of 'Knuckles'. With 12 killer cuts strewn across two slabs of wax, it's a value-for-money collection that contains more high-grade edits than you can shake a proverbial stick at.
