Review: While rock 'n' roll, in all its many forms from punk to doom, is usually considered the perfect outlet for rage and angry rebellion, guitars also have the power to spread more peaceful and empathetic messages. It's still an act of listening rebellion when you're in an age dominated by violence and distrust, but in a different, more positive way.

Solo album number seven for Thurston Moore is a case in point, realised thanks to input from his former Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley and My Bloody Valentine's Deb Googe. Don't think that means this is light stuff, mind. 'Hashish' might have an air of undeniable serenity about it, but the guitar lunge is all growl and threat. 'Cantaloupe' is stoner rock on steroids, and 'Breath' is one of the finest things you'll hear right now - 10 minutes that take us from vulnerable melodies to cacophony into locked, heads down rhythm.

  1. Spring Swells (4:37)
  2. Leave Me Alone (4:41)
Review: Appropriately titled, beguiling, cosmic-tipped, gritty stuff. No matter how long it has ever been since you got something new in from Thurston Moore it's always a pleasure, and a bold reminder of just how much the Sonic Youth hero still has to say. Not that he's particularly talkative on "Spring Swells", one of three simultaneous singles which together form a coherent body - the other two being "Three Graces: Alice Moki Jayne" and "Pollination". It's a single that's as much of an assault on the senses as it is a minutely detailed prog-rock symphony. Never really finding a groove, instead it bolts from the starting block before slamming the breaks on, transforming into a staccato whirlwind, spiralling, building, rolling and crashing through crescendos that never seem to release. Like the introduction to the most powerful gig you've never seen, it's the work of a bonafide master of arrangements, capable of conjuring genuine emotion from obscure noises.

  1. Three Graces: Alice Moki Jayne (4:03)
  2. Leave Me Alone (4:41)
Review: Just one in a trio of singles released simultaneously by the mighty Thurston Moore, in many ways the three should be heard together. It's not that listening to this without "Spring Swells" and "Pollination" isn't a very pleasant experience (in fact it's probably the most delicate and tender of the pack) but rather this is clearly one body of work comprising separate parts of the same theory. While the other two pack psychedelic wormholes and nervous tension respectively, this episode feels like a process of tuning whatever equipment is used to produce said noises. An overwhelming sense of calm is intruded by jarring bolts of guitar scuzz and discordance, gentile cymbals glitter before white noise takes control. In many ways this is Sonic Youth's walls of sound deconstructed, although saying that would perhaps do a disservice both to the soloist and his legendary band.
