Dark Acid (12")
Cat: CDR12 001. Rel: 08 Aug 13

Techno
Dungeon Acid - "Nude Descending A Staircase"
Ron Hardly - "Subway Antlers"
Tom Hawk - "Black Rain" (Fast Throne mix)
Tuff Sherm - "Idle Engines"
Worker/Parasite - "Angkar Loeu"
Review: After a catalogue of experimental, industrial and band-related releases, the Clan Destine label moves into techno with Dark Acid. The first release is a five track mini-album opened by the cagey Chicagoan bass and Marcel Duchamp-referencing Detroitisms of Dungeon Acid's "Nude Descending A Staircase". Sharing the two-track A-side is the "Subway Antlers" by the unknown cheek of Ron Hardly, featuring some '90s house percussion and a melody that sounds distinctly like the Doctor Who theme. Torn Hawk introduces some charged gothic techno with his Fast Throne mix of "Black Rain", while Tuff Sherm opts for a minimal and slow ghetto house approach in "Idle Engines". Recent One Eyed Jacks remixer Worker/Parasite brings the mini-album its most lieral representation of 'dark acid' by drenching the 303 workout that is "Angkar Loeu" in heavy reverb.

Deep House
Duplex - "Population Density"
Tuff Sherm - "Drain Spectre (After Virgo)"
Review: For the third release on their Midlight label, the superbly named Rotterdam trio Gustav Goodstuff, Arie Ghetto and Dickie Rosewater have turned to two contrasting talents; hometown heroes Duplex and the fast-rising Tuff Sherm. The latter's "Drain Spectre (After Virgo)" is particularly enjoyable, delivering as it does a 10-minute foray into Latin-influenced analogue deep house (think vintage synths, loose drum machine percussion and hazy electronics). That said, deep house veterans Duplex also impress with "Population Density", whose warm chords, rubbery synthesizers and shuffling beats border are typically melodic whilst retaining a solid dancefloor sensibility.

Rete Avek Ou
Review: Since launching in 2013, James McInnes and Vic Edirisinghe's Plastic World label has dared to go where other Australian labels fear to tread, delivering the sort of left-of-centre analogue house explorations usually associated with European and American label. This third 12", featuring two tracks apiece from local lads Tuff Sherm and Cassius Select, delivers four more surprises. Tuff Sherm's two tracks are particularly revelatory, with the woozy melodies and machine drum swing of "Topaz Looper" contrasting nicely with the clattering drums, hip-hop samples and melodic fluidity of "Beneath Numeral". Cassius Select heads to move bass-heavy territory on the flip, delivering two gargantuan chunks of bruk-influenced house-not-house to tempt and tease late night dancefloors.

Dern Werk EP
Cat: HOTSHIT 022. Rel: 02 Sep 15

Deep House
Dern Werk (5:11)
Zone 3 (4:12)
Bikini Spill (4:30)
Fire Ant (5:17)
Review: Australian noisemakers Tuff Sherm and Patch Free first joined forces for the fine Party Scraps EP on Butter Sessions in January. Here, they dust off their best classic house and techno influences for an EP on DJ Haus's rave-inclined Hot Haus label. They begin with the rave-era heaviness of "Dem Work" - all nasty hoover bass, pulsating riffs and scattergun drum fills - before delivering some deep, dreamy and shimmering goodness in the shape of "Zone 3". While the rough, acid-inspired throb of the strangely metallic "Fine Ant" is impressive, the EP's most poignant moment is undoubtedly "Bikini Spill", which cleverly mixes chiming, vintage synthesizer melodies and saucer-eyed chords with a jaunty, funk-fuelled groove.

Pusillanimous (Frak remix)
Pusillanimous
Sound1
Review: When we first copped the title of this EP, we half expected it to be filled with the aural equivalent soggy sausage rolls, stale crisps and half-drunk cans of cheap lager. Happily, Aussie techno and house producer Tuff Sherm - here in partnership with the previously unknown Patch Free - is too good a producer to fall into that trap. The title track is a sparse, stripped-back bumper, with both producers making hay with merely a handful of elements (bare rhythms, glacial melodies and hissing cymbals). "Sound 1" is an altogether stranger concoction, while "Pusillanimous" makes great use of dense, organic production and trippy vocal samples. Excitingly, techno titans Frak also provide a remix of the latter in their trademark fuzzy, heads-down style.
