Cat: PFLY 002. Rel: 18 Jun 14
Deep House
  1. Masterz Of Disasterz
  2. Day By Day
  3. I Want You Now
  4. Hang On
Review: UK house don Wbeeza comes through with Purple, a second release on his own PFlymusic label which continues to push his Pekno manifesto - that's techno direct from the heart of Peckham for the initiated! If you are a fan of Wbeeza's output on Third Ear you will be all over this 12" (and if you are not what's wrong with you!) which commences in fairly unrelenting fashion with the industrial strength concoction of kicks, hats and criminally minded bass lines that is "Masterz of Disasterz". Following this, Wbeeza turns in a nicely submerged 2014 edit of "Day By Day" from his 2010 LP Void, whilst robot voice aside "I Want You Know" focuses on a sound not too dissimilar to some of the bruk vibes that were emanating from West London circa 2003 and is a considered highlight!

Mo Bella EP
Cat: 3EEP 201305. Rel: 17 Apr 13
Deep House
  1. If U Believe
  2. Wacky Racers
  3. Wise Root
  4. Mo Bella
Review: The Mo Bella EP is London-based Third Ear regular Wbeeza's first outing since last year's Peckham Fly EP, which followed up the sizable 17-track Void long-player in 2011. The diverse, four-track Detroit-inspired 12" features the kind of overworked, stuttering drums the producer is known for, with three-dimensional basslines and jazzy samples a common occurrence throughout; "If U Believe" in love combines the classic 90s house horns and irresistible vocals in a fresh package, while "Wacky Races" is more of a dusty skipping jam in the Moodymann vein. "Wise Root" has all the kind of atmospheric analogue textures and rigid rhythms Legowelt is usually associated with, while a seemingly faulty filter connection makes for some creative confusion in the title track.

Can Of Worms EP
Cat: 3EEP 201502. Rel: 04 Mar 15
Deep House
  1. Can Of Worms (3:38)
  2. Circles (5:14)
  3. If I Ever (4:52)
  4. Upside Down (3:24)
Review: Surprisingly, it's been two years since Warren 'WBeeza' Brown last appeared on Third Ear, the label that has done most to promote his unique brand of future funk. Can Of Worms, then, is long overdue. For the most part, it's business as usual, with Brown darting between styles whilst retaining his usual warm feel and machine soul instincts. There's a dash of swirling, Andres style, disco-sampling deep house bump ("Circles"), an R&B and boogie 4/4 roller (the brilliant "If I Ever"), and as wonderfully dreamy, eyes-closed chunk of Detroit house ("Upside Down") that must rank among his best work of recent years. As for the title track, it gleefully melds broken beat and tech-soul sounds into a distinct slice of intoxicating goodness.

Expression Of Love

  2. Cosmic Jazz (6:13)
  3. It's A Sign (6:21)
  4. Work (7:27)
  5. Expression Of Love (14:43)
  6. Turn The Lights Off (5:03)
  7. Cakewalk (7:22)
Review: Since first poking his head above the parapet in 2007, Warren "Wbeeza" Brown has delivered a regular stream of emotive, dancefloor-friendly deep house releases. Given this track record, it's a surprise to find that Expression of Love is only his second album (his debut, Void, dropped back in 2010). Predictably, it's a fine full-length, stocked full of woozy, soulful, jazz-flecked deep house jams. As usual, he manages to strike the perfect balance between warm, bass-driven dancefloor weightiness and hazy, dust encrusted jazziness. While this usually manifests itself in rolling, groovy 4/4 cuts, there are occasional trips into MPC style beat-making territory - a decision that gives Expression of Love a more rounded feel than many similar house LPs.

Jackaboom
Jackaboom (12")
Cat: 3EEP 201005. Rel: 30 Nov 10
Deep House
  1. Jack Ur Car
  2. Boom!
Review: Third Ear whet appetites Ahead of Wbeeza's forthcoming album Void with two stripped down raw jackers from the South London house don. This strictly limited twelve has two tracks that you won't find on the aforementioned long player, but both are primed for dark warehouse spaces. "Jack Ur Car" is bottom heavy rawness at its finest, the relentless narcotic throb of the bass the backdrop to a cascading procession of loose percussive hits. On the B Side "Boom" is a more spinal counterpart, inexorably driven by a twisted thrust of keys and fluctuating rhythms and embellished with off kilter syncopation. Full marks!

Psychosomatic EP
Cat: ARMA 09. Rel: 20 Mar 15
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Creek (6:16)
  2. Psychosomatic (6:13)
  3. Just Trust Me (6:59)
Review: In a rare deviation from his usual haunt Third Ear, London producer Wbeeza gets snapped up by Moscow's Arma label to serve three distinctive tracks that prove he has a meandering artistic vision that doesn't easily fit into any particular trend. "Creek" shuffles and shimmers with a Detroit sensibility in its brittle drum machine beats and primal bleeps, while "Psychosomatic" drops the melodics and instead focuses on a roughly made set of percussion with a techy demeanour but a housey groove. "Just Trust Me" calls to mind the wayward tones of Wbeeza's Void LP, jamming out some fine slithers of funk around a tough but sprightly bounce that teases as much as it delivers.

Black Moon EP
Cat: SECRET 019. Rel: 10 Dec 15
Deep House
  1. Black Moon (7:25)
  2. Like Butta (5:55)
  3. Ferguson (9:50)
Review: Warren 'Wbeeza' Brown follows artists like DJ Qu and John Daly to deliver an EP on the label arm of the Secretsundaze organisation. The release starts with the grubby, mucky rhythm of "Black Moon", with Brown covering it in layer upon layer of dirty sound effects. "Like Butta" inhabits a totally different place, and has more in common with US garage; the drums and snares are crisp and sharp and the musical elements sound very jazz-influenced. For his final track, "Ferguson" take another turn; this time, it's towards acid trax, with Wbeeza applying his own subtle take on rolling Chicago drums to a bouncy 303 line.
