Review: The legendary Yusef Lateef is a jazz great, a true innovator and artist with several seminal albums to his name. His famous 'Eastern Sounds' was one of the last recordings made by the band shared with pianist Barry Harris. With the demise of their playing relationship coming to an end, the album is a spiritual journey through tonal and polytonal improv, building on the musical expertise of the far East and appropriating it for jazz. It's a historic album that captures a special moment in his career and still stands out as a vital listen.

Review: Yusef Lateef's brand of jazz is surely some of the easiest to love. That's not to say it's simplistic in any way, but rather than his affinity for groove and melody is just an instant pleasure - a smouldering mood which takes you somewhere far and fantastic without the need to raise the pulse. 1965 LP Psychicemotus is another masterpiece from a man whose career is nothing but masterpieces, leading in with the winding wonder of the title track led by Late's signature flute and backed up by Georges Arvanitas on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and James Black on drums. Whether you're a completist filling a gap or a jazz-curious bystander, this album will never let you down.

Ma-He's Makin' Eyes At Me (4:55)
Review: Revered multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef recorded the Three Faces of Yussef Late in 1960. The famously daring and expansive jazz man rather reined it in a little for this one on Riverside, but that doesn't make it any less essential. It's the sound of a musician at the peak of his powers and laying down gentle groovers like 'Goin' Home' and the Duke Ellington-composed 'I'm Just a Lucky So-and-So'. Late takes care of sax and oboe on monist tunes with able assistance from Hugh Lawson on piano, Ron Carter on cello, bass from Herman Wright and drums by Lex Humphries.

Love Theme From Spartacus
Cat: NW 6. Rel: 26 Nov 20

Jazz
Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus" (2:57)
Cannonball Adderley Sextet - "Brother John" (2:24)
Review: This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.
