Doubles EP (12")
Cat: HOTLINE 016. Rel: 25 Jun 19
  1. Doubles (4:40)
  2. One More Time (3:54)
  3. Nexx (3:38)
Review: "One More Time" eh? 10, 20 or maybe even 50 more times would be more appropriate as Sam Binga and Marcus Visionary lock horns over three table-style / UK funky riddims. The title track has a classic DJ Gregory vibe to it, all bashy, tropical and laced with intoxicating percussion elements, "Doubles" is pure carnival incarnate with its big sunny hook and hip-shaking bashment. Finally "Nexx" closes with a little rave element. Hoxton meets Detroit by way of Berlin; it's one of the tracks you could imagine being played and kicking off in any style set from techno to garage. Holy grail business - ring the Hotline today.

Mark Ernestus Remixes (12") (1 per customer)
DDS
Cat: DDS 026. Rel: 17 Oct 17
  1. Congo Get Slap (Mark Ernestus remix) (7:11)
  2. Flagged Up (Mark Ernestus remix) (9:33)
Review: The DDS label, short for Distort Decay Sustain, has given artists like Demdike Stare a platform on which to express themselves through over the years, but it was really Equiknoxx's LP from 2016, Bird Sound Power, which opened their doors to a whole new category of listener. In fact, it was that LP, with all its stunning, dub-wise experimentation, which has led to Mark Ernestus being called up for a pair of remixes. As you probably know, this is a rare case, so this 12" is sort of a special piece - "Congo Get Slap" is given the pure Ernestus rundown, with a charging, minimalistic percussion being swallowed whole by the raucous dub stabs caving in from all angles; the remix of "Flagged Up" is a much slower, more brooding affair in the same vein as the mythical cuts residing on imprints like Basic Channel and Chain Reaction - nothing but deep, meditative dub flexing for the mind. BIG!

  1. Ishan Sound & Hodge - "C5" (4:37)
  2. Ishan Sound & Muttley - "Still Smoking" (4:24)
Review: Having recently notched up 100 releases, Tectonic begins a new era by offering up a suitably weighty collaborative release from Peng Sound regular Ishan Sound. On side A, the Young Echo member joins forces with Hodge - owner of the nicest hair in techno - for the deep and dreamy dubstep shuffle of "C5", where fluid riffs dance above a blazed but powerful beat. Muttley lends a hand on flipside cut "Still Smoking", an altogether livelier and more aggressive - if still suitably deep and hazy - 140 BPM workout that comes complete with stabbing, grime style riffs and some serious subsonic bass.

  1. Mala - "Expected, Level 10"
  2. DVA - "Technical Difficulties"
  3. Kuedo - "Mtzpn"
  4. Kode9 - "Xingfu Lu" (Helix remix)
Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Ambience (12")
Cat: LOB 012. Rel: 27 Aug 15
  1. Ambience (5:33)
  2. UFO (4:58)
Review: Quadrants boss Mele is relentless in his production output, but rarely gets to see his work committed to vinyl. Shout outs to Redlight's equally busy Lobster Boy label for granting man like Mele's Ambience single the physical treatment then. Mele's reluctance to be pigeonholed is on full display with these two club ready cuts; the title track is a carnival-esque fusion of deep tribal beats, diva vocals and absurd breakdown. Complementing this "UFOZ" heads off into quirkier territory, with Mele conjuring a helium-filled laser attack of a production.

Queens Day (12")

  1. Queens Day (5:57)
  2. Body Thing (6:24)
Review: Quadrants main man and Merseyside's finest Mele is back with Queens Day: no doubt a tribute to Amsterdam's best party of the year and what a fitting soundtrack it is. A Latin-esque Carnival flavoured track that crosses over with bass music splendidly. Those whistles and steel drums are pretty sick, but just wait for that drop! Second track "Body Thing" continues on with the Latin festive vibes; those steel drums go even more ballistic with even more funk, this track could easily mix well with some summery big room tech house for monstrous effect.

  3. Sulphites (7:03)
  4. P.S.14 (5:35)
Review: Adding weight to the idea that a rising contingent of Italian producers are generating exciting fresh takes on the bass music paradigm, Meze returns to Home Made Zucchero with another four tracks of beastly sonic fusions. There's a fine balance struck between eerie sound design and brutal low end frequencies, and in the shape shifting, dynamic constructions Meze conjures up there is something genuinely original and exciting happening. At its core "Sans Corps" is a wholly danceable dubstep workout, but the dizzying layers of sonics flying around the outside make it so much more than that. With every track imparting its own distinct message, this is a record to make heads turn wherever it's played.

  1. Mizz Beats & Von D - "Dot Compulsion" (6:35)
  2. Mr Lager & Von D - "Some Other Place" (4:08)
Review: For their debut 12", freshly minted label Reflektion Tapes has pulled off something of a coup by signing up Von D, a storied producer who has released killer material on such imprints as Apron, Trojan Audio, Sub Freq and Black Acre. On this outing, the Frenchman showcases a pair of collaborative tracks. On the A you'll find "Dub Compulsion", a deliciously soulful, organic sounding hook-up with Deep Medi and Eglo sort Mizz Beats. While the crispy beats and bassline and suitably heavy, it's the wavering vocal samples and sparkling keys that really catch the ear. Former Diagrams man Mr Lager lends a hand on side two's "Some Other Place", a deep space fusion of delay-laden percussion hits, ultra-deep bass and swirling, intergalactic atmospherics.

  2. U Don't Know Me (Justin Cudmore vocal dub) (6:27)
  3. My Knife (6:08)
  4. God Chord (6:34)
Review: Mr. Sunshine is a new production duo hailing from London, and they're not pulling any punches as they land on HOMAGE with nothing to lose and everything to prove. "U Don't Know Me" is a truly deadly tech house bomb laced with massive bass flex and choppy vocals flown in from the UK garage tradition. Justin Cudmore turns the original into an acid-laced thumper precision engineered for the peak time. On the B-side, "My Knife" brings more wobbly b-line badness to get the kids freaking, and then "God Chord" brings a more urgent techy jack revolving around a mean bass and refined synth lead.

Review: "Shared Meanings" has been one of Mumdance's most ambitious and explorative projects to date; pulling together the four corners of the hardcore continuum and tying them in a tight bow, his mix has drawn elements and parallels between all genres and laced them in a narrative that mirrors and reflects throughout. Now, for limited time only, we have five of the 32 tracks he included in the mix ranging from his and Logos' totem track "Teachers" which pays homage to the UK's forefathers, to the pulverising thumpy bumpy techno of Nkisi's "Kinenga" via stasis sensation ambience from Space Afrika in the form of "After They Entered It Was Only Evident". Coordinates don't come much broader or deeper, "Shared Meanings" is Mumdance in full on explorer mode. Long may his meaningful trips continue.

Review: Enigmatic Myst returns to Fent Plates after over a year and a half of release silence. Picking up the pieces of us he left shattered all over the floor with "Naturesque", once again is a sprawling, beguiling saga that takes in the broadest of scenes from far away strings and poignant cries of "Calina" to the upbeat warm classic house subversions of "Betamax" by way of the tightly coiled graveyard twostep of "Ender". And that's just half the story. Myst's mystery continues...

Review: Neither Scratcha DVA, nor any of these legendary tracks and artists on this release need any introduction. It's taken about eleven years but the two highlights of "DREAMEATER 007" - A side "Kill All A' Dem" and "Taliban"- finally see the light of day. On the B side, we have the man remixing Mega's "Dangerous Liasons" in wonky street level fashion before he turns his deft hand to take on scene hero Wiley's "Apocalypto", churning out an intense tribal thriller to round things off on this long overdue release.

Review: After his Room(s) long player for Planet Mu confirmed him as an unsung hero amongst US beatsmiths, Travis Stewart follows up that gargantuan effort with this turn for Ninja Tune. It's a deeply atmospheric album that works Stewart's palpable love of jungle breaks into richly atmospheric pieces that move through sometimes mournful, sometimes dreamlike spaces that hang together like all the pieces of a creative puzzle should. At times the tone is blissful, as on "Center Your Love", while the immaculate breaks give way to strung out coldwave balladry on "U Still Lie". His sense of adventure as intact as ever, Stewart happily follows up such contemplation with the feisty tech-step precision of "Eyesdontlie", ensuring there's never a dull moment across the ten tracks.

Review: In the three years since the release of his last full-length as Machinedrum, Vapor City, Travis Stewart seems to have done some soul-searching. Whereas that set was a punchy and occasionally punishing mixture of juke, D&B, and UK garage sounds, Human Energy looks towards new age sounds and ideas for inspiration. Of course, Stewart hasn't completely abandoned skittish rhythms and bass music influences, it's just that these come wrapped in cheery, off-kilter synthesizer melodies, sparkling electronic flourishes, and repeated nods towards ambient, R&B and experimental synth-pop. As a result, it's a hugely entertaining and imaginative set, with just enough club-ready fodder to keep DJs happy.

Review: Up to now, Berlin's M.E.S.H. has only released a handful of EP's, one for the fledgling Dyssembler label and another for Bill Kouligas' ever-impressive PAN. The Berliner returns to the former with his debut album and he picks up the pieces from where he left off, providing a refreshing blend of wacked-out electronics and IDM-centred beats. The experimentations begin with "Piteous Gate" itself, a raucous blend of noise bullets and cinematic melodies, and become more structured thanks to the pseudo groove of tracks like "Optimate" and "Thorium". The B-side opens with the abstract, dubby sonics of "Kritikal & X", before heading into another gun-toting bundle of quasi beats on "Methy Imbis" and "Azov Seepage". Class.

Review: Given the hype that surrounded the release of the first Moderat set back in 2009, we can surely expect more of the same for this second outing from Apparat and Modeselektor. Those familiar with the first album's woozy blend of IDM, Thom Yorke indebted vocal dreaminess, porchlight techno and post-dubstep rhythms will immediately feel right at home. Online reviews have focused largely on II's atmospheric warmth, and the way in which the Berlin-based trio seems to have refined their sound. Both are valid critiques; certainly, there's a maturity and musical complexity to the album that betters much of their previous works. It's not much of a dancefloor set, but that's entirely the point; this is locked-in headphone listening for the wide-eyed generation.

This time label head honchos Bronsert and Szary team up with good mate Sascha Ring aka Apparat for another session as well.. Moderat, of course! Highlights include the bittersweet and bass heavy pop inflections of "Bad Kingdom" featuring Ring's powerful vocals, the epically future beats of "Let In The Light" or "Ilona" and the upbeat dusty deep house of "Milk". Review: It would be fair to say that few "big name" electronic acts are quite as committed to pushing the envelope as Berlin duo Modeselektor. If you're still dubious, then check this fourth volume in their ongoing Modeselektion compilation series, which is packed with bonkers and mind-mangling cuts. Boasting the first fresh Modeselektor cut since 2015 - the left-of-centre acid techno insanity of "Kalif Storch" - the two-disc set is packed full of genre-mangling, boundary-pushing exclusives from the likes of Actress, Italian techno pioneer Lory D, Skee Mask, Brainwaltzera, rRoxymore and Vatican Shadow. There's little in the way of relaxed home listening fare, either: this is balls-out experimental club music right out of the top drawer.

Review: Ross Birchard has been such an omnipresent figure on modern electronic music as Hudson Mohawke it seems strange to think Lanterns is only his second album. A lot has happened in the world of Hud Mo in the six 6 years since his Warp issued debut set Butter (hello Kanye) and the 14 track Lanterns comes across as a more compelling and adventurous album from the Scottish producer. Featuring some interesting guest appearances (Anthony Hegarty, Irfane, Miguel, Ruckazoid, Jhene Aiko) it's clear Lanterns is being presented as a chance for Birchard to reach the next level, and packs in a whole load of musical ideas along the way.

Review: Russian-Austrian by roots, Scottish by upbringing, RBMA alumni and multi-instrumentalist Motsa levels up with this extraordinary debut album. An 11 track opus delivered over two heavyweight 12"s, "Perspectives" spans his full breadth from dark broken bass ("Ritual Angel") to uncut euphoria ("Hyperreality") via urgent, panic-mode breaks laced with mournful harmonies ("World War III") and all types of emotional and complex shades between. From total uplift to grave melancholy, if you've so much as sniffed at an Apparat, Trentemoller, James Zabiela or Nathan Fake record then you'll be all over this. Exceptional.

Review: PIAS call on the respected close talker Gilles Peterson to curate No Deal Remixed, a self-explanatory addendum to last year's well received album from Belgian jazz artist Melanie De Biasio. Given the Brownswood boss's profile, it's little surprise to find an illustrious cast of musicians and producers involved here. Peterson's cachet is clear from the off with Mark Everett of Eels coaxed into contributing his first ever remix, which stays quite reverential to De Biasio's original, but reinterpretations from Seven Davis Jnr, Clap! Clap! And Johnwayne take the Belgian in pleasingly different directions. Gilles gets in on the act too with a lovely broken Latin refix alongside man like Simbad!
